Compare upgrade paths by looking beyond version numbers and feature announcements. For each product, record its release cadence, support window, required upgrade sequence, compatibility guarantees, migration and testing requirements, rollback limits, dependency rules, and who controls deployment timing. Use official policy documents and dated commitments, then weigh them against your team’s capacity for change and risk of running unsupported software.
What does an upgrade path comparison need to measure?
An upgrade path is the practical route from the version you run today to a supported future version. It includes more than the vendor’s release schedule: the route may involve intermediate versions, database or feature-state changes, plugin and driver updates, testing, a maintenance window, and a fallback plan. Two products that both publish frequent releases can impose very different workloads if one allows flexible sequencing and the other requires multiple migration steps.
Compare documented commitments, not marketing descriptions. For each product, distinguish what the vendor promises from what it merely recommends, and capture the policy’s scope: cloud service or self-managed software, major or minor releases, security fixes or all fixes, and the date or version to which the statement applies.

- Release model: What kinds of releases exist, and how often are they published?
- Support lifecycle: How long is a release supported, what updates are included, and what happens at end of support?
- Upgrade route: Can you skip releases, or must you complete intermediate upgrades and migrations?
- Compatibility: What changes can break APIs, integrations, plugins, drivers, or stored data?
- Operational burden: What testing, maintenance windows, automation controls, and rollback options are available?
- Effort: How many people, systems, and planned changes will each upgrade require?
These questions help prevent a common mistake: treating a higher version number or a longer list of features as evidence that a product will be easier to maintain.

How should you define the products and deployments you are comparing?
Start with a like-for-like comparison. A hosted service may manage upgrades on the customer’s behalf, while a self-managed installation may leave timing and execution to the customer. A vendor can also publish different policies for separate editions, release tracks, or components.
Write down the deployment in scope
For each candidate, specify the edition, hosting model, current version, release track, and the integrations that matter to your environment. Include database or feature-state versions when the product documentation treats them separately from the software binary. If the policy differs between hosted and self-managed use, score those as separate cases rather than combining them into one row.
Set the comparison horizon
Choose a period that reflects how your team plans and budgets maintenance. A single upgrade can conceal the long-term workload: a product with a short support window might require frequent projects, while one with a longer lifecycle could still require substantial work at each major transition. Use the same horizon for every candidate and state your assumption explicitly.
Collect primary evidence
Look for the vendor’s lifecycle or maintenance policy, release notes, upgrade guide, compatibility matrix, deprecation policy, and instructions for your deployment type. Record the exact page and the date you checked it. If a policy gives no commitment for an important issue, mark it “not stated” rather than filling the gap with a salesperson’s general assurance or an assumption based on another product.
How often will you need to upgrade?
Record major, minor, patch, rolling, and long-term-support releases separately. The cadence tells you how often you may need to review changes; it does not by itself say how many upgrades you must deploy or how long a deployed version remains supported.
| Product policy example | Documented cadence | What that means for comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Grafana | Minor releases every other month, major releases once a year, and patch releases at least monthly, according to its upgrade-strategy documentation. | Count review opportunities separately from required deployments; the policy also defines support windows, which belong in a different scorecard row. Grafana upgrade strategy |
| GitLab | Yearly major, monthly minor, and twice-monthly patch releases under its maintenance policy. | A frequent patch schedule is not the same as a requirement to install every release; record any deployment expectation separately. GitLab maintenance policy |
| Bazel | Rolling releases around every two weeks; an LTS major about every 12 months; LTS minors about every two months. | Compare the rolling and LTS tracks separately. The LTS model includes its own maintenance and deprecation terms. Bazel release model |
These are different products with different release models, not a controlled test of which vendor requires the least work. Use the figures as examples of the kinds of policy detail to capture, then verify the candidate’s current documentation and the track relevant to your deployment.
Separate release frequency from deployment frequency
A vendor may publish a patch twice a month while your team installs only selected patches, or a hosted service may roll changes out on a schedule the customer does not choose. Record both the vendor’s publication cadence and the customer’s actual decision window. Ask whether security fixes are released separately, whether fixes are backported to older supported versions, and whether feature releases can be deferred.
Faster cadence may deliver fixes and improvements sooner, but it also creates more opportunities to review changes and schedule deployments. A slower cadence is not automatically safer if it means a larger change set or a more difficult jump. Evaluate the work required per release alongside the number of releases.

How long is each version supported, and what happens at end of support?
Look for the length of support, the kinds of fixes included, the notice period before support ends, and the consequences of missing the deadline. A version number is not a lifecycle commitment; support details are what tell you how much time you have to plan.
| Policy example | Published support or notice detail | Scope to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| Grafana | Each minor release is supported for 9 months; the last minor release in a major version receives extended support for 15 months. | These are the support periods stated in Grafana’s upgrade-strategy documentation; confirm which minor is the last in its major line. Grafana upgrade strategy |
| MongoDB | Its versioning documentation describes a five-year lifecycle for major releases. | This is a major-release lifecycle statement, not a claim that every version or component receives identical treatment. MongoDB versioning |
| Microsoft Modern Lifecycle Policy | Microsoft states it will provide a minimum of 12 months’ prior notification before ending support for covered products and services when no successor product or service is provided. | The notice commitment applies to products and services governed by that policy and the stated condition. After end of support or retirement, Microsoft says no new security updates, non-security updates, or assisted support are provided. Microsoft Modern Lifecycle FAQ and Microsoft end-of-support overview |
| GitLab and Bazel | Support duration or notice period: not stated in the cited cadence summary. | Consult the applicable maintenance or release policy for the exact version and track; do not infer a support window from release frequency. GitLab maintenance policy and Bazel release model |
When an end-of-support consequence is explicit, include it in the risk assessment. Microsoft’s overview says that after end of support or retirement there are no new security updates, non-security updates, or assisted support. A product’s own policy may define a different outcome, so do not transfer one vendor’s terms to another.
Distinguish support for a release from support for a product
A product may remain actively sold while a particular version is unsupported. Capture the end date for the version you would actually run, not only the overall product’s lifecycle. Also note whether the vendor’s policy covers security fixes, defect fixes, technical support, or some subset; “supported” can otherwise conceal important differences.

Check the documented upgrade path from your current version to the target version. Some products permit a direct jump; others require intermediate software versions, data migrations, or changes to feature compatibility state. The latter can turn one planned upgrade into a sequence of separate changes.
MongoDB’s upgrade documentation says minor upgrades must be sequential in the documented path and that each step requires both a binary upgrade and an FCV (Feature Compatibility Version) upgrade. Its versioning guidance should therefore be read together with its version-specific upgrade paths, rather than treating a version number as the full procedure: MongoDB version upgrade paths and MongoDB versioning.
For every candidate, write down the exact starting and target versions, mandatory intermediate steps, and any separate data or feature-state transition. If a vendor does not state whether skipping is supported, record “not stated” and ask for a supported path in writing. Do not assume that a direct upgrade works simply because the installer accepts the target version.
Estimate the effort of a multi-step path
Count each required transition and the work attached to it: staging, backups, application checks, downtime, and sign-off. A route with three well-documented, low-risk steps may be manageable; a route with one unsupported jump is not necessarily simpler. Your comparison should reflect the team’s actual operational work, not only the number of version numbers crossed.

- GitLab: Its maintenance policy states that backward-incompatible changes are introduced in major releases. GitLab maintenance policy
- Bazel: Its release model defines a major release as potentially not backward compatible. Bazel release model
- Grafana: Breaking changes are generally reserved for the yearly major release, but may occasionally appear in minor releases. Grafana says these are announced in upgrade guides, “What’s New,” and changelogs. Grafana upgrade strategy
These policies do not mean that every major release is breaking or every minor release is risk-free. Check the release-specific notes for the version you intend to adopt, and list the interfaces your applications rely on. A compatibility promise is useful only if it covers the components you use.
Include plugins, drivers, and connected applications
Inventory separately versioned plugins, database drivers, API clients, and other extensions. Grafana warns that independently versioned plugins can create incompatibilities and recommends updating plugins before Grafana. MongoDB instructs users to confirm driver support for the target version. Those checks belong in the upgrade plan, not as an afterthought once the core software has been updated. Grafana upgrade strategy and MongoDB version upgrade paths
Can you test an upgrade before production?
Look for explicit staging guidance, compatibility matrices, migration tooling, and rollback instructions. Then verify that your test environment can represent the production dependencies and data changes that matter. A generic test recommendation is not a substitute for a supported route or a clear list of prerequisites.
MongoDB’s upgrade guidance says: “Test your application against the new version before it reaches production.” It also tells users to review compatibility changes and confirm driver support. This gives you a concrete minimum checklist: exercise the application on the target version, review the change list, and validate the driver combination you plan to deploy. MongoDB version upgrade paths
Build a test plan around the change
- Identify what changes: Record the target software version, required intermediate versions, configuration changes, and data or feature-state migrations.
- Check dependencies: Match plugin, driver, and API-client versions to the target release using vendor compatibility guidance where available.
- Run a representative staging upgrade: Use a production-like configuration and exercise important workflows, integrations, and data access.
- Set acceptance checks: Define what must work and who signs off before the production change.
- Document recovery: Confirm what can be restored or downgraded, what data may have changed, and which conditions make rollback unsupported.
For your scorecard, distinguish “vendor documents a staging process” from “our team can stage this deployment.” The first is a product capability; the second depends on your environment, data, and staffing.
Can you roll back after an upgrade?
Do not equate having a backup with having a supported downgrade. Record the exact downgrade targets and prerequisites, any restrictions on data or feature-state changes, and the point after which the previous version cannot safely be restored.
MongoDB documents downgrades constrained to adjacent versions and subject to stated Feature Compatibility Version conditions. That limitation is more useful than a generic “rollback available” label: your plan needs to match the allowed target and conditions for the specific upgrade. MongoDB version upgrade paths
For other vendors, if the cited upgrade guidance does not establish downgrade scope, mark it “not stated” rather than assuming that an installation can be reversed. Ask whether the vendor supports restoring a backup into the prior version and whether any changes made after the upgrade would be lost or require separate recovery procedures.

Who controls upgrade timing?
Compare who selects the deployment date, whether upgrades happen in waves, whether automatic upgrades can be paused, and whether you can choose a release channel. These controls vary with deployment model, so do not score an entire vendor as “automatic” or “manual” without checking the specific service or edition.
MongoDB distinguishes Atlas auto-upgrade, Atlas manual upgrade, and self-managed control. Grafana distinguishes rolling Cloud channels from self-managed cadence choices. These are examples of why deployment control must be a separate scorecard category: a hosted service and a self-managed installation can expose different timing choices even when the product name is the same. MongoDB version upgrade paths and Grafana upgrade strategy
Ask what happens if an upgrade is deferred, whether the service can force an update after a deadline, and how much notice customers receive. The answers belong to the relevant cloud or self-managed policy; do not assume that the product’s general release schedule answers them.

Use one row per decision factor and one column per product or deployment. Keep the evidence next to the score so that a high rating can be traced to a policy rather than opinion. “Not stated” is a meaningful result: it identifies a question to resolve and avoids awarding an unsupported benefit.
| Scorecard row | What to record |
|---|---|
| Release cadence | Major, minor, patch, rolling, and LTS tracks; expected intervals; whether security fixes are separate. |
| Supported-version count | How many versions or tracks are concurrently supported; use “not stated” if the policy does not say. |
| Security-backport window | Which supported versions receive security fixes and for how long. |
| Notice period | Required notice before support ends, including policy scope and exceptions. |
| Skip-version rules | Direct upgrade eligibility, mandatory intermediates, and binary versus data or feature-state steps. |
| Breaking-change policy | Which release types can break compatibility and where deprecations are announced. |
| Migration tooling | Documented migration tools, automated steps, prerequisites, or manual work. |
| Test and staging support | Compatibility matrices, staging instructions, and application or integration checks. |
| Rollback scope | Supported downgrade targets, conditions, and limits after data or state changes. |
| Dependency compatibility | Plugin, driver, API, and integration requirements and who maintains each. |
| Automation controls | Who schedules upgrades, whether rollout waves or pauses exist, and applicable channels. |
| Total expected effort | Staff time, number of transitions, test cycles, maintenance windows, and coordination needed over the chosen horizon. |
Weight the rows for your operating constraints
Choose weights before scoring products. A team with a strict change window might give deployment timing and staging more weight; a team handling sensitive data may emphasize support duration, security fixes, and recovery constraints. Keep weights consistent across candidates, and score evidence quality as well as product policy: a clearly documented commitment should not be treated like an unanswered sales question.
For each row, use a short rating scale your stakeholders can interpret, such as low, medium, and high operational risk. Define the scale once. For example, a required multi-step migration can be rated as more effort than a documented direct path only when the same team, test expectations, and planning horizon apply. Do not convert a missing policy into a favorable score.
Calculate effort as a workload, not a release count
For the chosen horizon, estimate the number of changes your organization expects to deploy, then attach the work for each: preparation, compatibility review, staging, approvals, production change, and recovery planning. Add fixed work for major migrations and dependency coordination. Keep assumptions visible so that a reviewer can change them if the product’s release policy or your own deployment practice changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis estimate is not a vendor benchmark. It is a planning model for your environment, and it should not imply equal costs for unlike products. Its purpose is to show where a product’s documented policy creates work, where your architecture adds work, and where evidence is still missing.

What should you ask vendors before choosing?
Turn unresolved scorecard cells into specific questions. Ask for answers tied to the edition, version, and deployment model you would buy, ideally with an official policy or technical document you can retain.
- Which versions of this edition are currently supported, and what is the end-of-support date for our target version?
- Can we move directly from our current version to the target, or are intermediate versions and separate state migrations required?
- Which APIs, plugins, drivers, and data formats are covered by backward-compatibility commitments?
- What security fixes reach older supported releases, and what happens if our upgrade is delayed?
- Which staging, migration, and rollback procedures does the vendor support for our deployment?
- For a managed service, who chooses rollout timing, what deferral controls exist, and how much notice precedes a forced change?
A useful answer is specific enough to put in the scorecard. If a response describes the general product but leaves the relevant version, track, or deployment unspecified, follow up before treating it as a commitment.
What is the practical decision rule?
Prefer the product whose documented lifecycle, required upgrade route, compatibility policy, and control model fit your team’s capacity and risk tolerance. A fast cadence can be attractive when fixes and improvements arrive quickly, but it raises the value of efficient review and deployment. A long support window can reduce upgrade pressure, but it does not eliminate migration work or dependency checks.
Make the final decision from the complete route you will operate, not a release headline: how long the current version is supported, how many steps reach a supported target, what must be tested, what can be rolled back, and who controls the change. If a material answer is “not stated,” treat it as an unresolved risk to clarify rather than as a tie-breaker in the vendor’s favor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an LTS label guarantee a version will be easy to upgrade?
No. LTS describes a vendor’s release or maintenance track, not the work required to reach or leave it. Check the track’s lifecycle terms alongside the documented upgrade sequence, compatibility rules, and any separate migrations.
Should I compare only the latest releases from each vendor?
No. Compare the versions and deployment models your organization would actually use, including the route from your current state. A latest-version comparison can miss whether your current release is still supported or whether several intermediate steps are required.
What if a vendor does not publish an answer about rollback or support duration?
Treat the missing commitment as an open risk, not evidence that rollback is unrestricted or support is generous. Request a version- and deployment-specific answer in writing and leave the scorecard cell marked “not stated” until the vendor documents it.
