Clean stainless steel brewing bottles promptly after use, remove any residue, rinse away cleaner, and then sanitize the clean interior according to the sanitizer’s current label. Avoid chlorine bleach: brewing-equipment makers warn it can corrode or pit stainless steel. Check your bottle maker’s instructions for the bottle, lid, seals, finish, and temperature limits; there is no universal cleaning recipe for every stainless brewing bottle.
Clean first, then sanitize
Cleaning removes brewing soil such as dried residue. Sanitizing is the next step, applied to a surface that is already clean. Sanitizer should not be used as a substitute for removing visible soil.

Empty and rinse it promptly
After use, empty the bottle and rinse it before residue dries. Brewing-equipment guidance recommends cleaning stainless equipment soon after use; prompt rinsing can make later cleaning easier.

Brush away interior residue
If residue remains, use a bottle brush that fits the bottle’s interior and is appropriate for its finish. Brushes sold for beer bottles can be a useful tool category, but a size listing for 12–22 oz bottles is not a guarantee that a particular brush fits every stainless bottle. Brushing removes soil; it does not sanitize.

Use a brewing-equipment cleaner only as labeled
If rinsing and brushing are not enough, choose a cleaner intended for brewing equipment and follow its current label for dilution, temperature, contact time, compatibility, and rinsing. PBW is one cleaner named in brewing-equipment guidance. The American Homebrewers Association reproduces Five Star Chemicals’ tank directions of 2 oz per gallon at 160°F, followed by draining and rinsing; those are tank directions, not a recipe to apply to every bottle.

Rinse and dry as the instructions allow
Rinse the cleaner away as its label directs. Avoid leaving any chemical solution in contact with the bottle longer than its label specifies. Dry the bottle thoroughly after cleaning if the bottle maker’s instructions allow it.

Sanitize the clean bottle
Use a brewing sanitizer that is suitable for the bottle and any nonmetallic parts, such as its lid or seal. Follow the current product label for dilution, complete surface coverage, contact time, and whether rinsing is required. One Ss Brewtech FAQ says Star San sanitizes a clean surface after 60 seconds and describes it as no-rinse guidance. A Northern Brewer product page lists 1 oz per 5 gallons and 1 to 2 minutes; verify the current manufacturer label rather than relying on retailer directions if they differ.
Brewing sources also name Saniclean and Star Xene as sanitizer options for tanks, but they do not establish a head-to-head comparison or confirm that every product is compatible with every bottle and closure. Choose by the product’s current directions and compatibility information, not by assuming tank guidance applies to bottles.

What to avoid and what to check
- Do not use chlorine bleach on stainless brewing gear. Blichmann Engineering’s manual states: “Bleach should not be used to clean or sanitize stainless steel as it will corrode and pit them.” Ss Brewtech likewise warns that chlorinated bleach or other chlorine products can cause irreparable damage.
- Do not assume the cap and seal have the same limits as the steel bottle. Check the bottle maker’s instructions for materials, cleaners, sanitizer compatibility, and permitted temperatures.
- Do not transfer a tank procedure to a bottle without confirmation. Tank dilution, heat, soak times, and passivation procedures are not universal bottle-care instructions. The available guidance does not establish a routine passivation procedure for all stainless bottles.
