Check what your tumbler is made of before you wash it: “tortoiseshell” describes a pattern, not a material. Juliska’s Puro Large Tumbler – Tortoiseshell is glass, and Juliska says it is dishwasher safe on a warm, gentle cycle. For a scratch-conscious hand wash, use warm soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge, then dry it with a soft microfiber cloth.
First, identify the tumbler’s material and care instructions
Look at the base, packaging, product page, or care card. Glass, resin, and handmade tumblers with epoxy or other decorative finishes can have different care requirements, so a pattern alone cannot tell you whether a tumbler is dishwasher safe.
For the specific Juliska Puro Large Tumbler – Tortoiseshell (SKU TO143/210), Juliska lists the material as glass and gives this care instruction: “Dishwasher safe, warm gentle cycle. Not suitable for hot contents, freezer or microwave use.” Follow those limits for this model; do not assume they apply to every tortoiseshell tumbler.
How to hand wash glass without scratching it
- Use warm soapy water. Wash the tumbler with a soft cloth or sponge. Dinosaur Designs’ glass-care guidance recommends this approach and warns against abrasive cloths or scourers because they may scuff or scratch glass.
- Rinse gently. Avoid scrubbing with rough pads or abrasive cleaning tools.
- Dry with a soft microfiber cloth. Handle the glass carefully while drying; Dinosaur Designs notes that its glass can be damaged if dropped or knocked.
Hand washing is a scratch-conscious option for glass. It is not a requirement for the Juliska model: Juliska permits a warm, gentle dishwasher cycle.

How care changes for resin or decorated tumblers
Use the instructions for the exact maker and product. These examples illustrate why glassware directions should not automatically be applied to resin or decorated tumblers.

What to avoid
- Abrasive cloths, scourers, and rough scrubbers: they can scratch or scuff glass and are discouraged in the cited resin and decorated-tumbler care guidance.
- Assuming the pattern determines dishwasher safety: check the exact product’s instructions instead.
- Transferring one maker’s rules to another product: the dishwasher allowance for Juliska’s glass tumbler does not establish that a resin or decorated tumbler is dishwasher safe.
- Knocks and drops: handle glass carefully because impact can damage it.
