On Apple TV 4K, choose a HomePod or stereo pair under Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output when you want that speaker to remain the default. For a one-time change, hold the TV button on the Apple TV Remote, open Audio Controls in Control Center, and select another speaker. You can also set the default from the Home app on an iPhone or iPad. The Apple TV 4K and HomePod must be assigned to the same Home app room and connected to the same network. A stereo pair provides left-right separation or home-theater surround; a HomePod mini works for Apple TV audio but renders Dolby Atmos, 5.1, and 7.1 content in mono or stereo.
How do I choose a HomePod as the Apple TV’s permanent speaker?
Set the HomePod as the default audio output in Apple TV settings. This choice remains in effect for Apple TV 4K playback, including system sounds and game audio.
- Open Settings on Apple TV 4K.
- Select Video and Audio.
- Choose Audio Output.
- Select the HomePod, HomePod stereo pair, or another AirPlay-enabled speaker you want to use.
When a HomePod is the default, Apple TV 4K routes all of its sound to that HomePod, including interface sounds and audio from games. Selecting a HomePod stereo pair makes the pair the single output destination rather than requiring you to choose the left and right speakers individually.

How do I switch HomePods for one viewing session?
Use Control Center when you want a temporary destination without changing the saved default.
- While watching or using Apple TV, hold the TV button on the Apple TV Remote.
- In Control Center, select Audio Controls.
- Choose the HomePod, stereo pair, or AirPlay speaker you want to hear.
This is the quickest way to move sound between speakers for a particular movie, show, or game. A temporary selection for a non-HomePod AirPlay speaker returns to the default output after Apple TV 4K goes to sleep. If you want a HomePod to be used every time, set it under Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output instead.
What must be true before a HomePod appears as an Apple TV speaker?
Apple’s home-theater setup depends on room and network assignments, not just physical proximity. Complete these prerequisites before troubleshooting the Audio Output list.

- The Apple TV must be an Apple TV 4K.
- The Apple TV 4K and HomePod or HomePod mini must be assigned to the same room in the Home app.
- The devices should be connected to the same network.
- If you are using two speakers, they must first be created as a stereo pair and that pair must be assigned to the same room as the Apple TV.
If Apple TV displays the setup prompt, select Use HomePod speakers as Apple TV speakers, then choose Use as TV Speakers. If the prompt never appears, you can complete the setup manually through the Audio Output menu.
How do I check the room assignment?
In the Home app, verify that the Apple TV and the intended HomePod are shown in the same room. For a pair, check the stereo pair as a unit rather than checking only one of its component speakers. A room mismatch can prevent the speaker from being offered as the Apple TV’s home-theater output even when both devices are on the same network.
Should I use one HomePod, two HomePods, or HomePod mini?
The right arrangement depends on whether you want simple room audio, stereo imaging, or broader home-theater support. Apple supports all three arrangements with Apple TV 4K, but their channel and format capabilities differ.
| Setup | Speakers | Stereo or surround result | Dolby-format behavior | Placement guidance | TV-connected devices |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| One HomePod | 1 | Single-speaker listening for one room | Supports Apple TV 4K theater audio features available to HomePod | Within 10 inches (25 cm) of a wall and as close to the center of the TV as practical | Can participate in the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) ARC/eARC path when the TV supports it |
| HomePod stereo pair | 2 HomePod speakers configured as one pair | True left-right stereo separation or home-cinema surround sound | Best choice when you want two-speaker imaging and supported surround playback | On either side of the TV, about 4 feet (1.2 m) apart for optimal surround sound | Can participate in the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) ARC/eARC path when the TV supports it |
| HomePod mini | 1 or more supported HomePod mini speakers | Apple TV audio in the supported speaker arrangement | Dolby Atmos, 5.1, and 7.1 are rendered in mono or stereo rather than those surround formats | Use the same-room and same-network requirements; placement still affects what you hear | Requires the same Apple TV 4K ARC/eARC requirements for television-device audio |
When is one full-size HomePod the sensible choice?
Choose one HomePod when you want the simplest setup in a single room and do not need a separate left and right speaker position. Centering it near the TV helps keep dialogue and effects anchored to the screen. Apple’s placement guidance is to keep it within 10 inches (25 cm) of a wall and as close to the TV center as possible.

When is a stereo pair worth setting up?
Use two HomePods as a stereo pair when the listening position benefits from clear left-right separation or a wider home-theater presentation. Place the speakers on opposite sides of the TV, roughly 4 feet (1.2 m) apart, then assign the completed pair to the same Home app room as Apple TV. Apple TV treats the pair as one selectable output.
What are HomePod mini’s format limits?
HomePod mini can serve as an Apple TV 4K speaker, but it does not support Dolby Atmos, 5.1, or 7.1 surround sound. Those formats are rendered in mono or stereo, so choose a full-size HomePod or stereo pair if preserving those supported surround formats is important.
How do I switch between two HomePods?
First decide whether the two speakers should behave as a permanent stereo pair or as separate destinations.
For a permanent stereo pair
- Create the stereo pair in the Home app.
- Assign the pair to the same room as Apple TV 4K.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output.
- Select the stereo pair.
The pair then appears as one output choice and supplies coordinated left-right audio. You can still use Control Center’s Audio Controls for a temporary move to another available speaker.

Do not combine the speakers into a stereo pair if you need to choose between them individually. Keep each HomePod assigned correctly in the Home app, then use Audio Controls to select the destination for the current session or choose one speaker as the saved default in Audio Output.
Can Apple TV send sound from a game console or DVD player to HomePod?
Yes, but this requires Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), an eARC-compatible television, HDMI-CEC enabled, and the correct Audio Return Channel setting. This path lets HomePod play audio from a console, DVD player, or another device connected to the TV.
- Connect the Apple TV 4K to an eARC-capable HDMI port on the television with an eARC-compatible HDMI cable.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on the television.
- Set the HomePod or stereo pair as Apple TV’s default output.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output.
- Choose Audio Return Channel and turn on Play Television Audio.
- Select the TV input that contains the console, DVD player, or other source.
The television must support ARC or eARC. Without that TV capability, the Apple TV-to-HomePod setup does not carry audio from devices plugged into the television’s other inputs.

Why doesn’t my HomePod show up in Audio Output?
Most missing-speaker cases come from an eligibility or assignment mismatch. Work through the checks in this order.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Confirm the Apple TV model: Apple’s home-theater instructions apply to Apple TV 4K.
- Check the Home app room: Apple TV and the intended HomePod must be in the same room. A stereo pair must also be assigned to that room as a pair.
- Check the network: The Apple TV and HomePod should be on the same network.
- Look for the setup prompt: If it appears, choose Use HomePod speakers as Apple TV speakers and then Use as TV Speakers.
- Use the manual route: Even without a prompt, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output and inspect the available speakers.
- Review the format expectation: A HomePod mini may play the audio while rendering Dolby Atmos, 5.1, or 7.1 as mono or stereo; that behavior is a format limitation, not a missing connection.
If the speaker appears but disappears after sleep, check whether you selected it only through temporary Audio Controls. Non-HomePod AirPlay selections are designed to return to the saved default after Apple TV sleeps.
What audio does a HomePod default actually carry?
With a HomePod selected as Apple TV 4K’s default output, the route covers the entire Apple TV audio experience rather than only video-app playback. That includes system sounds and game audio. This is different from selecting a non-HomePod AirPlay speaker temporarily, which does not replace the saved default and can reset after sleep.
Which setup should you choose?
Use this decision guide to match the speaker arrangement to your room and source devices.
- Choose one HomePod for the least complicated single-room setup and a centered sound source.
- Choose a stereo pair when left-right separation, a wider soundstage, or supported surround presentation matters more than simplicity.
- Choose HomePod mini when compact speakers meet your needs and mono/stereo rendering of Dolby Atmos, 5.1, and 7.1 content is acceptable.
- Plan for ARC/eARC only when you want HomePod to reproduce audio from a console, DVD player, or another device connected to the TV; Apple TV app audio does not require that television-input return path.
Quick setup checklist
- Put Apple TV 4K and the intended HomePod in the same Home app room.
- Make sure the devices use the same network.
- Create and room-assign a stereo pair if using two speakers.
- For a permanent choice, select the speaker under Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Output.
- For a one-time choice, hold the TV button, open Audio Controls, and select the destination.
- If using television-connected sources, verify Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), eARC, HDMI-CEC, and Play Television Audio.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Audio Controls choice change my saved Apple TV default?
No. Audio Controls changes the destination for the current session; it does not rewrite the speaker selected under Default Audio Output. To make the change stick for later sessions, set the HomePod or pair in Apple TV Settings or in the Home app.
Can I select the left and right speakers of a stereo pair separately?
A configured stereo pair is presented as one output destination. If you need independent speaker choices, keep the HomePods unpaired and select an individual speaker from Audio Controls or Audio Output.
Do I need eARC for movies and games running on Apple TV itself?
No. eARC is needed for audio that enters the television from another connected device, such as a console or DVD player, and then returns through the Apple TV 4K. Apple TV’s own apps, system audio, and games use the normal HomePod output selection.
Will HomePod mini preserve a movie’s Dolby Atmos surround mix?
No. HomePod mini can play the soundtrack, but Dolby Atmos, 5.1, and 7.1 content is rendered in mono or stereo. Use a full-size HomePod or a compatible stereo-pair arrangement when those surround formats are a priority.
