Measure the distance from your normal seat to the TV screen, then use that measurement to compare sizes. For 4K TVs, Sony’s reference minimum viewing distance is 1.5 times the screen’s vertical height—not 1.5 times its diagonal. Treat that as a pixel-visibility guide, not a universal ideal: comfort, room layout, what you watch, and how immersive you want the picture to feel all matter.
How far should you sit from your TV?
Measure from where your eyes normally are when seated to the plane of the screen. Room depth alone can mislead: the location of the sofa or chair, the TV’s position, and how far you sit back determine your actual viewing distance.
Sony’s support guidance recommends a minimum viewing distance of 1.5 times the TV’s vertical screen height for 4K. Sony describes its distances as minimum references and advises adjusting for personal preference, the program, and the viewing environment. Sony gives different minimum references for lower resolutions: three times screen height for HD and approximately six times screen height for SD. These are manufacturer guidelines about viewing distance and resolution, not rules that everyone must follow or independent findings about what viewers prefer.

What size TV should I get?
There is no single screen size that is right for every room. Start with your measured eye-to-screen distance, then consider how much of your view you want the television to occupy. At the same distance, a larger screen feels more immersive, but whether it is comfortable depends on the viewer, content, and viewing conditions.
Sony’s TV selection guide offers a separate broad rule: the TV’s height should be two-thirds of the distance between the TV and your viewing position. That is a general size-selection rule, while Sony’s 1.5-times-height guidance is framed as a minimum viewing-distance reference for 4K. Samsung’s room-size guide also emphasizes viewing distance and room layout. How to choose a size for your room
- Measure from your normal seat. Sit where you expect to watch and measure from your eye position to the screen plane.
- Use the right resolution reference. For a 4K TV, compare your distance with Sony’s minimum reference of 1.5 times screen height. Check the current guidance for the model you are considering.
- Choose the experience you want. Decide whether you prefer a more relaxed view or a more immersive picture. Movies, sports, gaming, and everyday viewing may lead you to different preferences.
- Compare sizes against the actual layout. Consider the normal seat, room arrangement, and whether the larger option feels comfortable from that position.
- Check the TV’s actual dimensions before buying. Confirm that the screen will fit the intended location and can be installed there.
What else affects the choice?
- Resolution: Sony’s reference distances vary for 4K, HD, and SD. Its shorter 4K reference does not mean every viewer should sit at that minimum.
- Immersion: A larger screen occupies more of your field of view from the same seat. Personal comfort matters more than any one size rule.
- Room layout and use: Account for the real seating position and the kinds of programs or games you watch.
- Installation location: Compare the TV’s physical dimensions with the available space before choosing a size.
