Choose phone storage by looking at what you keep on the device now, what you expect to add, and how long you plan to use it—not by relying on a universal “right” number. Photos and videos, large games, and offline downloads can fill storage quickly; streaming, regular cleanup, and cloud photo storage can reduce how much you need locally.

What uses phone storage?

Built-in storage holds the operating system, apps and games, photos and videos, downloaded media, and files saved on the device. Your current usage is the best starting point: open your phone’s storage settings and note the total used and the largest categories.

Separate files you expect to keep from items you can delete or download again. Offline films, music, games, and work or school files all take local space. Streaming may avoid storing media permanently, but downloaded content still occupies the phone.

How to estimate the capacity you need

  1. Check current usage. Open the storage settings on your phone and record how much is used and which categories take the most space.
  2. Estimate what you will add. Consider how often you take photos and videos, install apps or games, download entertainment for trips, and save files for work or school.
  3. Factor in how long you will keep the phone. A capacity that suits your current library may feel restrictive if you plan to keep adding media for several years.
  4. Decide what you will store locally. If you often need content without an internet connection, allow room for offline media and files. If you usually stream and regularly remove items, you may need less local space.
  5. Compare the exact model’s capacity options and prices. Weigh the added cost against your expected use and how much storage management you are willing to do.

How cloud storage changes the calculation

Cloud storage and built-in phone storage are separate. A larger cloud allowance does not increase the phone’s physical capacity, and cloud services have their own storage limits.

iCloud Photos

Apple’s Optimize Storage setting can keep smaller, space-saving versions of photos and videos on the phone while full-resolution originals remain in iCloud. It depends on having iCloud Photos set up and enough available iCloud space. Apple Support lists 5 GB of included iCloud storage; that is an account allowance, not a recommendation for phone capacity. See Apple’s guide to managing photo and video storage.

Google Photos

Google says each Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage, with options to buy more or clear space. Backup quality affects how photos and videos are stored, and some files may remain at original size. This account allowance is separate from the phone’s built-in storage. See Google Photos Help on backup quality.

Cloud photo storage can help when a photo library is taking up local room, but it does not create space for offline films, music, games, or other files kept on the phone. Consider your internet access and willingness to rely on a cloud service when deciding how much to store locally.

Compare storage options for the exact phone

Capacity choices and prices differ by model and generation. Compare the configurations of the specific phone you want rather than assuming every brand offers the same tiers. As a dated example, Macworld’s 2026 iPhone buying guide reports that Apple’s current-generation iPhones start at 256 GB. That describes Apple’s lineup at that time; it is not a universal recommendation or a claim about Android phones. Check Macworld’s 2026 iPhone buying guide for that report.

  • More built-in storage may suit you if you keep a large photo or video library locally, install many large apps or games, download media for offline use, or want fewer storage-management chores.
  • Less built-in storage may suit you if your local use is modest, you routinely stream or clean up, and you are comfortable using cloud storage for photos where available.

Make the decision using your habits, not a universal number

There is no established capacity that is right for every phone owner. Start with your own storage breakdown, expected additions, and planned ownership period. Then compare the available capacities and price difference for the specific model. The best fit is the one that covers the files and apps you expect to keep on the device without paying for space you are unlikely to use.
