Windows 11 lets you send each app to a different playback device. Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer, find the app under Apps, and choose its Output device. You can also adjust that app’s volume and mute state there. The device selected under Settings > System > Sound > Output remains the general default for software that follows the Windows default.

This per-app routing solves setups such as Discord in a headset while Spotify plays through speakers, game audio over HDMI while voice chat stays on headphones, or a USB audio adapter dedicated to one program. The right endpoint depends on its physical connection, the hardware attached to it, latency requirements, and whether Windows detects it reliably.

How does Windows choose an audio output for an app?

Windows exposes every detected playback endpoint—such as HDMI audio from a monitor, a USB headset, Bluetooth headphones, a 3.5 mm sound-card output, or built-in speakers. An app can either follow the system default or use an explicit per-app assignment. Microsoft describes this behavior as: “Apps can use a different output device than the system default.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The system default is the device shown under Settings > System > Sound > Output. It is the sensible choice for general listening. A per-app assignment in Volume mixer overrides that default for the selected program while leaving other software unchanged.

Routing is process-based. If a program opens several audio sessions, Windows normally shows them under the same app entry, so changing that entry affects all of its playback sessions. A browser’s tabs are generally part of one browser process rather than separate Windows apps; use the browser or web service’s own device control when it provides one.

How do I assign an output device in Windows 11?

Use Volume mixer rather than changing the global default when only one app needs a different destination.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Select Volume mixer.
  3. Scroll to Apps and locate the program that is playing, or should play, sound.
  4. Open that app’s Output device menu and select the headphones, speakers, monitor, USB device, or other endpoint you want.
  5. Check the app’s volume slider and mute button. A muted app or a slider set to zero can look like a routing failure.
  6. Leave the preferred everyday device selected under Sound > Output so software without a custom assignment continues to follow the system default.

Start playback after making the change. Some programs create their audio session only when they begin playing; if the app is absent from the list, launch it, play a sound, and reopen Volume mixer.

Example: Discord to a headset and Spotify to speakers

  1. Connect and verify both the headset and speakers before opening the apps.
  2. Start a song in Spotify and have Discord play a notification or join a call.
  3. In Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer, choose the headset for Discord’s Output device.
  4. Choose the speakers for Spotify’s Output device.
  5. Set the app volumes independently so a loud music session does not mask call audio.

If Discord or Spotify has its own output selector, keep it aligned with the Windows assignment. An in-app setting can take precedence or recreate the audio session after a restart.

Example: game audio over HDMI and chat through headphones

Select the monitor or television’s HDMI endpoint for the game in Volume mixer and the headphone endpoint for the chat application. HDMI audio is available only while Windows detects the display and its audio driver; changing display connections can remove or rename that endpoint, requiring you to select it again.

How do I set a default playback device in Windows 11?

When several programs should share one destination, change the global default instead of assigning every app individually.

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select the desired device.
  3. Play a test sound and confirm that the device’s speakers or headphones are physically connected and powered.
  4. For older controls, select More sound settings, open the Playback tab, right-click the device, and choose Set as Default Device when that option is available.

The default affects apps that follow Windows’ default. It does not erase a deliberate per-app selection; an app assigned to another endpoint in Volume mixer can continue using that endpoint.

How do I route app audio in Windows 10?

Windows 10 uses the classic Sound control panel and Volume mixer. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so labels and behavior may differ on an unsupported installation; upgrading to a supported Windows release is the safer long-term option.

  1. Right-click the volume icon on the taskbar and open Sounds.
  2. Select the Playback tab.
  3. Right-click the intended device and choose Set as Default.
  4. Open the taskbar volume menu’s Volume mixer and find the affected app.
  5. Confirm its playback device, volume, and mute state. If the per-app device control is not visible, close and relaunch the program after setting the default.

Windows 10’s control-panel layout is different from Windows 11’s Settings page, but the distinction is the same: Playback controls establish the default, while the mixer controls an app session.

What should I compare when choosing between output devices?

Do not choose solely by the device name. Compare the connection, attached hardware, timing behavior, and driver reliability for the job you are doing.

Decision area What to check Why it matters
Physical connection USB, HDMI, Bluetooth, 3.5 mm, or an internal sound output The connection determines which endpoint Windows exposes and whether it depends on a display, radio link, adapter, or cable.
Actual listening hardware Whether speakers, headphones, a monitor, or a headset are connected to that endpoint A selected endpoint can be working while its connected hardware is unplugged, powered off, muted, or set to another input.
Latency and monitoring Delay during games, calls, recording, or live monitoring Small delays are usually tolerable for background music but distracting when a microphone feed or game response must stay synchronized.
Detection and drivers Whether the device appears consistently and has a current driver An endpoint that disappears after sleep, docking, or a display change cannot be a dependable per-app destination until detection is fixed.

USB audio devices and adapters

A USB audio adapter can add another playback endpoint that Windows can select for a particular app. Before relying on one, check its Windows driver support, connector type, channel support, and whether the current product listing matches your operating system. A USB adapter does not automatically solve a silent app if the app is muted, assigned elsewhere, or the adapter is not detected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDMI and monitor audio

HDMI endpoints usually represent the audio capability of a connected display. They are useful for games, films, or presentations, but the display must be powered and detected. Reconnecting a monitor, changing a dock, or switching graphics hardware can create a new endpoint name or remove the old one.

Bluetooth output

Bluetooth headphones may expose more than one operating mode. A high-quality music mode and a microphone-enabled call mode can appear as separate endpoints with different names. Select the mode appropriate to the app, and remember that enabling the headset microphone can change the available playback profile.

Why is one app using the wrong output device?

The usual cause is a per-app assignment that no longer matches your hardware. Windows retains an app’s selected endpoint while the system default changes, and an app can also choose its own destination.

  • Open Volume mixer and inspect the app’s Output device, volume, and mute state.
  • Check whether the selected endpoint is still connected. Docking, unplugging a headset, changing a monitor, or disabling Bluetooth can invalidate it.
  • Set the intended general device under Sound > Output if the app should follow the default.
  • Look inside the app for an audio-output setting and make sure it is not overriding Windows.
  • Close and relaunch the app so it creates a fresh audio session after the device change.

What should I do when Windows says sound is playing but the app is silent?

Follow the checks in this order; each one eliminates a common failure without changing unrelated applications.

  1. Check the app session. In Volume mixer, verify that the app is listed, not muted, and has a volume above zero.
  2. Check its endpoint. Select the intended Output device instead of relying on a disconnected or stale device name.
  3. Check the system default. Under Sound > Output, select a known-working device. If necessary, open More sound settings > Playback and set a default playback device.
  4. Test another application. If every app is silent, the problem is system-wide rather than limited to one assignment.
  5. Disable enhancements. For distortion, crackling, or unexpectedly low quality, turn off audio enhancements and test another default format in the device’s properties.
  6. Restart audio services. Restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then test the app again.

Do not raise the master volume repeatedly before checking the app slider. Windows can show an active meter for a muted app or for a session routed to a device with no connected speaker.

How do I fix an output device that is missing?

A missing endpoint is a detection or driver problem, not a Volume mixer preference.

  1. Open Device Manager and look under the audio-related device categories.
  2. If the device is present but disabled, enable it.
  3. Select View > Show hidden devices to reveal disconnected or previously installed endpoints.
  4. Use Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  5. Install the latest compatible driver from the computer or audio-device manufacturer, then restart Windows.
  6. Reconnect the USB cable, display, or Bluetooth device and return to Settings > System > Sound to confirm that the endpoint has reappeared.

If a device repeatedly vanishes after sleep or docking, test a different port or connection and check for a manufacturer driver or firmware update. Do not assign apps to an endpoint that is only visible as a hidden or disconnected device.

How do enhancements and formats affect app routing?

Routing determines where audio goes; it does not guarantee that the signal will sound clean. Enhancements, exclusive-mode behavior, and an unsuitable default format can produce crackling, distortion, or reduced quality after the correct device is selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the selected playback device’s properties from the Sound controls, turn off audio enhancements, and test another available default format. Change one setting at a time and replay the same clip so you can identify which change helped. If the problem occurs only in one app, compare that app’s internal format or exclusive-mode setting with the Windows device properties.

How can I keep a multi-device setup manageable?

  • Give each physical device a clear Windows name when the operating system allows it, such as “Desk speakers,” “Headset,” or “Monitor HDMI.”
  • Connect devices before launching apps that need fixed assignments.
  • Keep one reliable general-purpose device as the system default and use per-app routing only where it solves a real need.
  • After changing a dock, monitor, USB port, or Bluetooth profile, revisit Volume mixer; Windows may expose a new endpoint rather than preserving the old association.
  • For calls and games, test notification sounds, voice chat, and microphone monitoring before an important session.
  • Document the intended mapping—for example, game to HDMI, chat to headset, music to speakers—so you can restore it quickly after a driver or hardware change.

What is the quickest diagnostic checklist?

  1. Is the target device physically connected, powered, and unmuted?
  2. Does it appear under Sound > Output?
  3. Is the app present in Volume mixer?
  4. Does the app have the intended Output device and a nonzero volume?
  5. Does the app’s own audio menu agree with Windows?
  6. Does another app play sound through the same device?
  7. Would selecting a different default format or disabling enhancements address crackling or distortion?
  8. If the endpoint is missing, have you checked Device Manager, shown hidden devices, scanned for hardware changes, installed a current driver, and restarted?
  9. If all applications fail, have you restarted Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder?

These checks separate a simple per-app assignment from a disconnected endpoint, a driver problem, or a system audio-service fault. Once the device is detected and the app session is unmuted, Volume mixer is the control that determines the final destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Windows remember an app’s output choice after a reboot?

Usually the per-app association remains until the endpoint is removed, renamed, or the application changes its own audio setting. Major hardware changes, docking setups, and Bluetooth profile switches can make the saved choice point to an unavailable device, so verify the mapping after those changes.

Why do my Bluetooth headphones show two playback entries?

Bluetooth headsets commonly expose separate music-focused and microphone-enabled profiles. The profile with microphone support may trade some playback quality or bandwidth for two-way communication, so select the profile that matches whether the app is for listening or calls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I send two different browser tabs to two devices?

Windows normally treats one browser application as a single audio session, so Volume mixer cannot reliably separate tabs. Use a service’s own output control, separate browser applications, or another program that creates independent Windows audio sessions.

What if the output device appears in Device Manager but not in Sound settings?

Enable the device, reveal hidden devices with View > Show hidden devices, and run Action > Scan for hardware changes. Then install the current driver from the computer or device manufacturer and restart before checking Sound settings again.
