The best VPN for traveling depends on your itinerary and what you need it to do: protect traffic on shared Wi-Fi, reach a particular destination or home-country server, handle restrictive networks, or attempt access to home streaming services. For most travelers, the practical shortlist is NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access (PIA), but no provider’s worldwide country count proves it will work on a particular hotel, airport or mobile network. Check current destination coverage and device support before you subscribe, and test the app before departure.
What is the best VPN for traveling abroad?
There is no universally best travel VPN. Security.org’s October 12, 2026 review names NordVPN its smartphone travel pick, Proton VPN its travel-streaming pick, ExpressVPN its quick-task option and PIA its domestic-travel option. Those are that publication’s conclusions from its testing, not guarantees or a universal ranking. Choose by the networks, destinations, devices and activities on your own trip.
TechRadar’s September 25, 2026 travel review recommends NordVPN overall and also evaluates Proton VPN, ExpressVPN and PIA. The two publications report different country totals, and their test methods and labels are not interchangeable. Use the comparisons below to identify candidates, then confirm current features and routes directly with the provider.

| VPN | Travel use cited by reviewers | Features described by TechRadar | What to verify for your trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Security.org’s smartphone travel pick; TechRadar’s overall recommendation | NordLynx, OpenVPN, a kill switch and obfuscated servers | Coverage near your destination, platform support for the features you need, and whether its connection works on your expected networks. |
| Proton VPN | Security.org’s travel-streaming pick | A free plan with limitations; OpenVPN and WireGuard; Stealth on supported platforms; Secure Core | Whether the free-plan limitations meet your needs, whether Stealth is supported on your device, and whether the streaming service currently accepts the connection. |
| ExpressVPN | Security.org’s quick-task option; described by TechRadar as beginner-friendly | Lightway, OpenVPN, IKEv2 and a kill switch | Current plan terms, the app’s behavior on your operating system and the server locations you actually need. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | Security.org’s domestic-travel option | Linux support and a large US footprint | Exact locations or cities, plus current platform and device limits. |
The labels in this table reflect the named publications’ reviews dated September and October 2026. They do not establish that a service will connect in every country, on every carrier or hotel network, or with every streaming service.

How should I compare VPNs for my itinerary?
Start with destinations and expected networks, not a headline server total. Then check app behavior, device coverage, privacy evidence and the specific activity you want to do. A VPN that suits ordinary browsing may not be the right choice for work access, streaming or a network with restrictions.
1. Check destination and home-country routes
List the countries where you will connect and, separately, the home-country locations you may need. Look for a usable server in or near each destination and a suitable route back home if that matters. A nearby country may be a reasonable alternative for general browsing, but it is not necessarily equivalent for a service that depends on your apparent location.
Two 2026 reviews give different country totals for the same providers:

| Provider | TechRadar, September 25, 2026 | Security.org, October 12, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 150 countries | 137 countries |
| Proton VPN | 149 countries | 127 countries |
| ExpressVPN | 113 countries | 105 countries |
| PIA | 101 countries | 91 countries |
These are separate reviewers’ published figures, not one reconciled count. Differences may reflect how the publications counted or when they checked; neither figure guarantees a server in the precise city or a reliable route from your hotel. Verify the current provider list for your destination before buying.
2. Match connection features to likely networks
Check whether the app offers an automatic connection option for untrusted Wi-Fi and what it does if the VPN connection drops. A kill switch is intended to block traffic if the VPN disconnects, but settings and behavior can differ by platform. Confirm the exact option in the app on each device you plan to bring.
Rank #2
If you expect a network that interferes with VPN connections, look for an appropriate fallback or obfuscation mode and confirm that it is available for your device. TechRadar describes obfuscated servers for NordVPN and Stealth on supported Proton VPN platforms. These features may help a connection blend in with ordinary traffic; the reviews do not establish universal access, and their availability does not establish that VPN use is permitted where you are going.
3. Count devices and people
Add up phones, laptops and tablets, including devices belonging to travel companions if they will share a subscription. Compare that total with the provider’s current simultaneous-connection allowance and confirm which platforms have full app support. Current device limits are not stated in the cited review findings, so check the provider’s terms rather than relying on an old comparison.
For a family or work group, a travel router with VPN-client mode is another option. TP-Link’s support documentation, updated June 24, 2026, says that devices connected to a compatible travel router can use a remote VPN service without each device having its own VPN app. The router and service must support a compatible protocol, and configuration is done through the router interface. Confirm the specific model’s current manual and firmware before travel; a router is an optional convenience, not a requirement for a solo traveler.
4. Examine privacy evidence and plan terms
Read the provider’s published privacy policy and check the scope and date of any independent audit. An audit can support a specific claim at a particular point in time; it is not proof that every privacy concern has been eliminated or that the service behaves identically forever.
Compare the current monthly and longer-term terms, renewal price and refund conditions at checkout. The 2026 reviews’ displayed prices are market- and date-specific, and no current price or offer is established here. Do not choose a long commitment based on a promotional figure without checking what renewals cost and whether the plan covers your devices.
Do I need a VPN for international travel?
No: international travel does not automatically require a VPN. TechRadar’s September 25, 2026 review puts it this way: “If you’re asking whether you absolutely and unequivocally need a VPN for international travel, the answer is probably not.” Whether one is useful depends on your threat model, the network, the accounts you access and whether you need a particular location.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA VPN is one layer for using shared networks, such as airport or hotel Wi-Fi. It encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN service, which can reduce what someone on the local network can see about that connection. It does not make phishing links safe, protect an already compromised device, make a weak connection fast, or guarantee that a website or app will be reachable.
When a VPN may be useful
- You want an encrypted connection while using a network you do not control.
- You need to connect to a home-country or other location-specific server for a legitimate activity.
- Your work or organization requires a VPN for access to its systems; follow its specific instructions.
- You have tested an appropriate connection mode for a network that may interfere with VPN traffic.
What to do even when using one
- Use HTTPS websites and official apps, keep your device and apps updated, and use multi-factor authentication where available.
- Use a trusted mobile-data connection if public Wi-Fi is unreliable or you do not want to use it.
- Do not treat a VPN as a substitute for checking the address of a site, protecting account credentials or following your employer’s security policy.
Which VPN works best on hotel and airport Wi-Fi?
No review in the cited findings establishes a VPN that works best on every hotel or airport network. Security.org says it tested six travel VPNs on a trip abroad, evaluating connection quality across diverse networks, public-Wi-Fi security and encryption, censorship circumvention and cross-device flexibility. Its page, updated October 12, 2026, also lists more than 50 VPNs reviewed, 300 speed tests and six experts consulted as methodology figures; those are the publication’s stated figures, not independently verified results.
Those evaluations can help narrow a shortlist, but a specific Wi-Fi network may impose its own sign-in steps, block or interrupt VPN connections, or simply have poor connectivity. A high server count does not tell you how a particular access point will behave.
Prepare before you leave
- Install the official app. Set it up on each phone, computer or tablet before departure, while you have a reliable connection.
- Sign in and test. Connect to a nearby server and, if needed, a home-country server. Confirm that ordinary sites and essential apps work with the VPN on.
- Review automatic protection. Find the app’s auto-connect and kill-switch settings on each operating system. Test the setup on a network you control rather than assuming a setting is enabled.
- Keep a fallback. Know how to disconnect or switch the VPN mode if a legitimate captive-portal sign-in or essential service will not load. Reconnect after completing the sign-in if you want the VPN for subsequent traffic.
- Use mobile data if needed. If the hotel or airport network is unstable, changing VPN servers may not solve the underlying connection problem.
Can I use my VPN to access home streaming while traveling?
Sometimes, but it is not guaranteed. Security.org names Proton VPN its travel-streaming pick, and TechRadar reports streaming observations in its review; those are review findings, not promises that a particular service, title or server will work for you. Streaming providers can detect and block VPN traffic, and availability can change.
Rank #4
Before relying on a VPN for a trip, check that the provider offers a home-country location and test the streaming service with the VPN enabled. Confirm that your account is in good standing and that the service is available under the terms that apply to your location. A VPN does not guarantee access to a catalog, bypass of a restriction, or uninterrupted playback.
Which travel VPN works in countries with internet restrictions?
The cited reviews do not establish a VPN that works reliably or lawfully in every country with internet restrictions. Obfuscation or a protocol designed for difficult networks may help in some circumstances, but a feature description or reviewer label is not proof of access in a specific destination. Security.org’s restrictive-country label applies to a provider omitted from this article; it should not be read as a general guarantee about any service.
Before travel, check current local rules and the provider’s up-to-date connection guidance for the exact destination. Laws and enforcement can differ by country and change over time. Do not assume that a VPN’s availability in an app store, or its ability to connect elsewhere, means its use is lawful or uninterrupted where you are going.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a travel router worth bringing?
A travel router is most useful when several devices need to share one VPN connection or when repeatedly setting up an app on each device would be inconvenient. With VPN-client mode, a compatible router connects to the VPN service and passes that connection to devices joined to the router’s Wi-Fi.
TP-Link’s documentation explains the VPN-client setup through the router interface and describes support for several protocols, but capabilities vary by model and firmware. Check that the exact router supports the protocol your VPN service offers and that the setup suits the network you will use. NETGEAR’s 2026 travel guide describes the Nighthawk 5G M7 portable hotspot, including physical SIM and eSIM connectivity, as a travel-connectivity product; that guide does not establish that this particular hotspot is a VPN client. Do not assume a hotspot and a VPN-client router are interchangeable.
What do the 2026 travel VPN reviews actually establish?
The reviews are useful for comparing candidates, but their rankings, server totals and performance observations belong to each publication and date. Security.org’s review says it tested six travel VPNs abroad across diverse networks and evaluated Wi-Fi security, encryption, censorship circumvention and device flexibility. TechRadar’s September 2026 review also covers coverage, device limits, protocols, privacy features, streaming and speed observations. Neither set of findings settles how a VPN will perform on your route, device, destination network or chosen streaming service.
Use reviewer findings as a shortlist, then verify the details that can change: available locations, app features, device limits, plan terms, network guidance and destination rules. If one of those details is essential to your trip, confirm it directly before departure rather than extrapolating from an overall rating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I install my VPN before I leave home?
Yes. Installing and signing in while you have a reliable connection gives you time to resolve account or app problems before you depend on it abroad. Download apps only from the provider’s official distribution channel.
Will a VPN stop my hotel from seeing what I do online?
A VPN changes what the local network can observe about traffic carried through the VPN, but it does not make you anonymous to every service you use. Sites you sign in to can still associate activity with your account, and the VPN provider itself becomes part of the connection path.
Can my employer require a different VPN from the one I buy for travel?
Yes. A personal VPN and a work VPN serve different purposes, and employers may require a specific app or configuration to reach company systems. Ask your IT team which connection to use and whether personal VPN software should be disabled for work access.
Does a VPN use more mobile data when I travel?
VPN encryption adds some connection overhead, and your usage still counts against the data allowance from your mobile carrier or travel SIM. The amount depends on your activity and connection, so check your plan’s data terms before relying on it for video or large downloads.
