Bright Data, Decodo, Oxylabs, SOAX, IPRoyal, Webshare and Zyte are seven credible starting points for a data-team proxy shortlist, but there is no universal winner. The right choice depends on your target domains, countries or cities, session persistence, expected traffic, need for browser rendering or extraction, and whether you want to operate proxy infrastructure yourself. Bright Data, Decodo and Zyte also offer managed scraping products, while the others are best treated as proxy-network candidates whose current plans and capabilities should be verified directly.
This guide separates provider-published claims from independently established facts, shows how to compare traffic-priced proxies with request-priced APIs, and gives a repeatable evaluation process for selecting infrastructure that produces usable data at an acceptable cost and risk.
What are the best web scraping proxies for a data team?
The best proxy is the one that delivers your required records from your actual target sites, locations and session patterns at a predictable total cost. A large advertised IP pool does not prove success on a particular domain, and a low headline price may exclude browser rendering, difficult targets, minimum commitments or failed requests.

The available material does not establish a neutral, current performance benchmark across all seven. Treat success rates, response times, pool counts, prices and trial offers as dated provider claims, then test the domains that matter to your project.
How do the seven options compare at a glance?
| Provider | Primary model | Useful fit to investigate | Published information and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bright Data | Proxy networks plus managed scraping products | Teams wanting a broad catalog, from proxy endpoints to scraper APIs, browser access, SERP tools and datasets | Bright Data advertises 400M+ monthly residential IPs in 2026. That is a provider claim, not an independently audited count. |
| Decodo | Proxy network plus Web Data API | Teams comparing self-managed proxies with scrape, search, map and crawl endpoints from one supplier | Its 2026 homepage claims 125M+ IPs and 195+ locations. Figures, pricing and trials can change; verify the live offer. |
| Oxylabs | Proxy and data-access provider | Organizations that need an enterprise procurement candidate and will request current support, security and contract details | The reviewed material does not establish current pool size, plans or comparative performance. |
| SOAX | Proxy provider | Projects where granular geographic targeting is a primary evaluation criterion | A Bright Data comparison characterizes SOAX as offering granular geo-targeting. That characterization is vendor-authored and should be confirmed with SOAX. |
| IPRoyal | Proxy provider | Teams modeling variable workloads and flexible spend | A Bright Data comparison describes pay-as-you-go projects and reports provider-supplied figures. Check current rates, minimums, expiration rules and target support. |
| Webshare | Self-serve proxy provider | Lightweight scraping, prototypes and teams that want to evaluate service without a lengthy procurement cycle | Zyte’s comparison guide calls it easy to use for lightweight scraping and testing. This is a vendor-authored comparison, not a current independent test. |
| Zyte | Managed scraping API | Teams that prefer an API to handle rotation, sessions, rendering, extraction and ban handling | Zyte displays a $5 trial credit and pricing starting at $0.06 per 1,000 successful responses in 2026. Cost varies by target difficulty and rendering, so treat these as dated offer claims. |
What should you compare before choosing a scraping proxy?
Define the workload before comparing vendors. The same provider can be economical for a simple HTTP collection job and expensive for a JavaScript-heavy site that needs a browser, residential addresses and long-lived sessions.
Product model: proxy endpoints or a managed scraper?
A proxy network supplies an exit IP and leaves your team responsible for request construction, parsing, retries, cookies, browser execution and data quality. That model offers control and can fit an existing crawler, but your engineers operate more of the failure surface.
A managed scraping API can absorb some of that work. Zyte describes automatic ban handling, rendering, sessions, extraction and rotation across residential, datacenter and mobile IP types. Bright Data and Decodo also present managed scraping or data-access products alongside proxy networks. The convenience can reduce engineering time, but request-based billing and target-dependent features make direct price comparisons with per-gigabyte proxies misleading.
Proxy type and target requirements
Residential, datacenter, ISP and mobile addresses have different availability, cost and target fit. A datacenter address may be sufficient for a public endpoint with low friction, while a consumer-facing site may require a residential or mobile route. Do not assume that a provider offers every type in every country or plan; confirm the exact combination you need.
Geography and session control
List the countries, regions, cities or other location granularity your records require. Then specify whether each request may rotate, whether a login or shopping journey needs a sticky session, how long that session must persist and how many concurrent sessions you will run. A pool with many addresses is not useful if it cannot supply your required locations or session behavior.
Workflow and integration
Check for the interfaces your stack can operate: authenticated HTTP or SOCKS endpoints, an API, SDKs, browser integration, extraction templates, webhooks and usage logs. Managed products may be faster to integrate for a team without a browser-automation platform; raw proxies may fit better when you already own scheduling, parsing and observability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPricing unit and total cost
Write down the billing unit before looking at the headline number. Common units include gigabytes, IPs, requests, successful responses, target difficulty, browser time or a committed monthly allowance. Include retries, failed attempts, rendered pages, storage, engineering time and data-cleaning costs when calculating cost per usable record.
Operations and governance
Evaluate support channels, onboarding, account controls, usage alerts, concurrency limits, incident communication, acceptable-use language and data-governance requirements. Your legal and compliance review should cover the target site’s terms, applicable privacy rules and any restrictions on collecting personal or sensitive information.

Which provider is the best fit for each workload?
Bright Data: broad infrastructure and scraping tools
Bright Data is the breadth option. Its official catalog includes proxy networks, Web Scraper API, Scraper Studio, Scraping Browser, SERP API, Web Unlocker and datasets. That range lets a team compare operating a proxy layer with delegating more of collection to managed products under one account.
The provider’s 2026 pricing page advertises 400M+ monthly residential IPs. Attribute that figure to Bright Data and date it; it is not an independently audited measurement and does not predict success on your targets. Bright Data’s own 2026 comparison article also lists competing vendors, but its rankings and pool or price claims are vendor-authored.
Choose this candidate when product breadth, multiple acquisition modes or a path from raw proxies to managed tooling matters. Ask for target-specific examples, concurrency terms, rendering costs and current acceptable-use conditions instead of treating the advertised pool as a guarantee.
Decodo: proxy network plus managed data access
Decodo is the current name for Smartproxy; the company says the rebrand became official in April 2025. Its site presents proxy offerings alongside an all-in-one Web Data API with scrape, search, map and crawl endpoints. That combination is useful for teams deciding how much of the collection stack to operate themselves.
Decodo’s 2026 homepage claims 125M+ IPs and 195+ locations. Those are current site claims, not neutral measurements, and the same page can change its feature, pricing and trial displays. Confirm whether the locations, session controls and endpoint behavior match your target list before committing.
Include Decodo in a bake-off when you want one supplier to cover both proxy infrastructure and managed data access. Make the Smartproxy-to-Decodo name change explicit in procurement notes so older documentation and account references are not mistaken for a different service.

Oxylabs: an enterprise candidate requiring current verification
Oxylabs appears in provider lists from both Bright Data and Zyte. The available evidence is not sufficient to state its current network size, plan structure, support commitments or performance relative to the other six options.
That makes Oxylabs a candidate to evaluate, not a ranked winner. Enterprise buyers should request current contract terms, service-level language, security documentation, support coverage, data-retention practices, concurrency limits and a target-specific proof of concept. Record which capabilities are included in the quoted plan rather than relying on comparison pages.

SOAX: investigate when location targeting dominates
SOAX is listed by Bright Data, whose comparison describes it as offering granular geo-targeting. Because that description comes from a market participant, use it as a lead for evaluation rather than an independently verified product verdict.
Ask SOAX to demonstrate the exact countries, regions or cities you need, the available proxy types in each location, session duration, rotation controls and any concurrency or traffic minimums. A successful test should validate both the apparent location and the target site’s response, since an IP geolocation label alone does not prove that a page will be served as a local user would see it.
IPRoyal: model flexible spending carefully
IPRoyal appears in Bright Data’s comparison list, where the page describes pay-as-you-go projects and includes provider-reported price and network claims. Those figures are volatile and are not independent measurements.
This candidate is most relevant when demand varies and you want to model usage rather than sign a large fixed commitment. Before approval, compare current per-unit rates, minimum purchases, expiration rules, concurrency, supported targets and refund or replacement policies. Calculate the cost of retries and unusable responses, not just the advertised traffic rate.
Webshare: a self-serve path for lightweight work
Webshare appears in both Bright Data’s and Zyte’s comparison lists. Zyte’s guide characterizes it as easy to use for lightweight scraping, testing and early-stage projects; that is vendor-authored positioning, not a current independent test.
Use Webshare as a self-serve evaluation candidate when you need to get a prototype running quickly or want a low-friction comparison baseline. Verify the current free tier, paid limits, proxy types, geographic choices, authentication options and support terms on Webshare’s own service documentation before designing around them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Zyte: a managed scraping API alternative
Zyte’s API is aimed at teams that want the service to handle more of scraping operations. Its official product description lists automatic ban handling, rendering, sessions, extraction and rotation across residential, datacenter and mobile IP types. That can remove substantial browser, retry and proxy-orchestration code from your stack.
The 2026 product page displays a $5 trial credit and pricing starting at $0.06 per 1,000 successful responses. Those figures are target- and feature-dependent offers, not a guaranteed price for your workload. Browser rendering and difficult websites can change the effective rate, so model a representative target before comparing it with a traffic-priced network.

The page also reproduces success and response-time figures attributed to Proxyway. They should not be used to claim that Zyte wins across providers without checking the benchmark’s methodology and date. Treat the managed API as a way to buy operational simplicity, then verify the resulting cost and data quality on your own domains.
How should you run a fair proxy evaluation?
A small, documented test is more informative than a pool-size comparison. Keep the target list and success definition fixed while changing providers.
- Describe the workload. List target domains, URL patterns, countries or cities, expected requests, peak concurrency, schedule, login or cookie needs, JavaScript requirements and output fields.
- Set a success criterion. Define a usable response as more than an HTTP status: require the expected page, required fields, acceptable freshness and a completed parse. Track blocked, challenged, malformed and partial responses separately.
- Choose a representative sample. Include easy and difficult pages, each important geography and both anonymous and session-bound flows. Run enough requests to expose rotation and concurrency behavior without creating unnecessary load.
- Configure one variable at a time. Hold headers, timeouts, browser version, parser and retry policy constant. Change only the provider or the proxy mode so the result remains interpretable.
- Measure the full economics. Record traffic, requests, successful usable records, retries, browser time, queue time and engineering effort. Report cost per successful usable record or response, not only cost per gigabyte.
- Inspect location and sessions. Confirm the observed IP country or city with an independent geolocation check, then test whether a sticky session preserves cookies and identity for the required duration.
- Review operational evidence. Check dashboards, usage alerts, error details, support response and account controls during the test. A provider that works technically but cannot explain failures may create more production work than its price suggests.
- Document limits and stop conditions. Respect the target site’s terms, applicable law and your provider’s acceptable-use rules. Stop or redesign the test if responses indicate that your request pattern is harmful or prohibited.
How do you compare proxy pricing with scraping-API pricing?
Normalize each quote to the same output. For a proxy network, estimate total traffic for successful pages, retries, assets and protocol overhead. For an API, include request charges, successful-response definitions, rendering or browser surcharges, extraction features and any minimum commitment.
Suppose two designs both return 100,000 usable records. A traffic-priced proxy may look cheaper until browser execution and engineering time are added. A request-priced API may cost more per call but eliminate a browser cluster, ban-handling code and maintenance. Use a spreadsheet with columns for attempted requests, successful responses, bytes, rendered pages, retries, provider fees, compute, storage and labor. Keep one row for each target class so difficult sites do not disappear inside an average.
Do not transfer a promotional number from one provider to another. Bright Data’s 400M+ residential-IP figure, Decodo’s 125M+ IP and 195+ location claims, and Zyte’s $5 credit or $0.06-per-1,000-successful-response starting display each belong to that provider, date and offer context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What commonly goes wrong, and how can you recover?
The pool is large but the target still blocks requests
Pool size does not establish reputation, geography or target compatibility. Reproduce the failure with a small controlled sample, compare proxy types, reduce concurrency, preserve required cookies and inspect whether the target is returning a challenge page rather than the requested content.
Location results are inconsistent
Check the actual exit address and geolocation for every session, not only the provider’s dashboard label. Pin the required country or city, avoid accidental rotation during a transaction and ask the provider how location targeting is implemented when the observed result differs.
Sticky sessions expire too soon
Measure session lifetime under your real request cadence. If a login or cart flow exceeds the available lifetime, redesign the workflow to checkpoint state, request a longer-lived session where offered or use a managed browser product that explicitly supports the journey.

Costs exceed the estimate
Separate retries, rendered requests, failed responses and successful records in billing logs. Recalculate with the target’s actual difficulty and disable expensive browser or extraction features on pages that do not need them.
A managed API hides the reason for failure
Require response metadata, status categories and request identifiers in your integration. Keep a small direct-proxy or browser diagnostic path for troubleshooting, while ensuring that fallback traffic still complies with the target and provider rules.

Which option should you shortlist first?
- Need the widest mix of proxy and managed tools: start with Bright Data, then compare its managed products with a raw proxy design.
- Want proxy infrastructure and data APIs from one current supplier: evaluate Decodo and record the April 2025 Smartproxy rebrand in your documentation.
- Have enterprise procurement and support requirements: include Oxylabs in a formal request for information, but require current product and contract evidence.
- Depend on precise location targeting: test SOAX alongside at least one alternative and verify observed geolocation on your own targets.
- Expect irregular demand: model IPRoyal’s current pay-as-you-go terms against the real cost of retries and unusable data.
- Are building a lightweight prototype: use Webshare as a self-serve comparison candidate and verify its live plan limits.
- Prefer not to operate browser and ban-handling infrastructure: test Zyte’s managed API, including rendering and extraction charges, against the labor you would otherwise supply.
What governance should a production data team put around proxies?
Assign an owner for each target and record the lawful purpose, permitted fields, retention period and deletion process. Keep a registry of domains, geography requirements, provider accounts, session policies and approved concurrency. Review personally identifiable or sensitive data separately; a proxy does not make collection automatically lawful or anonymous.
Instrument the crawler with request IDs, target, proxy mode, geography, status category, parse result, latency, bytes and retry count. Redact credentials and sensitive response content from logs. Set rate limits that protect target systems, create alerts for sudden challenge rates or traffic spikes, and preserve enough evidence to explain how a record was collected.
Revalidate providers before renewal. Product names, pool claims, locations, trial credits, prices and acceptable-use terms change. A quarterly check of the live offer and a small target-specific regression test is safer than assuming that last year’s configuration still behaves the same.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a proxy service or a scraping API?
Choose a proxy service when your team already operates request scheduling, parsing, browser automation and retry logic and needs control over each layer. Choose a scraping API when reducing that operational burden is worth paying for managed rotation, rendering or extraction; compare both on cost per usable record, not on the headline unit price.
Are residential proxies always better than datacenter proxies?
No. Residential routes can be useful for targets that treat hosting-network addresses differently, but they may cost more and can have different availability or session behavior. A controlled test on your target and geography should determine whether the extra cost improves usable results.
How many proxies does a scraper need?
There is no reliable number without the target’s rate limits, response size, session rules and schedule. Start from required concurrency and requests per session, then size the pool to maintain that workload while keeping per-target rates respectful; measure challenge and error rates before adding addresses.
Can I use one proxy account for several unrelated projects?
Separate projects when they have different legal owners, target permissions, credentials, geography or risk profiles. Separate keys and budgets also make anomalies easier to detect and prevent one crawler’s traffic spike from affecting another project’s service.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How often should proxy performance be retested?
Retest after changing target domains, geography, browser behavior, concurrency or parsing requirements, and on a scheduled basis for long-running systems. A small recurring regression suite can reveal changes in challenge rates or data quality before they affect an entire batch.
