Choose PHP hosting by matching the host to your application’s runtime and security needs—not by headline price. Confirm a supported PHP branch, database engine and version, required extensions, per-site memory and process limits, HTTPS automation, account isolation, recoverable backups, safe caching, and the operational tools your team needs. For a current WordPress installation, that means at least PHP 8.3, MariaDB 10.11 or MySQL 8.0, and HTTPS; production sites should use PHP 8.4 or newer when the application is compatible.
The safest selection process is to inventory your application first, obtain written answers from each provider, and test the complete stack before migration. The sections below show exactly what to check, which figures matter, and how to compare shared, managed, and self-managed PHP plans.
How do I define the PHP hosting requirements for my application?
Start with a written inventory of the software you will run. A host is compatible only when every layer—PHP, database, web server, extensions, limits, and deployment tools—meets the application’s requirements at the same time.
Record the application’s runtime stack
- Application and version: note the CMS, framework, plugins, themes, and custom code, because a plugin can impose stricter requirements than the core application.
- PHP branch: record the minimum and recommended versions, plus whether the code has been tested on PHP 8.4 or later.
- Database: identify the engine, minimum version, character set, storage engine, and remote-connection requirements.
- Web server: check whether the software expects Apache modules, nginx behavior, LiteSpeed features, URL rewriting, or specific FastCGI settings.
- Extensions: list every required PHP extension and whether it must be enabled at the account level or globally.
- Limits: capture memory_limit, maximum execution time, upload and post size, input variables, worker or process limits, and cron frequency.
- Operations: decide whether you need SSH, Git, staging, WP-CLI or another command-line tool, scheduled jobs, access logs, error logs, and deployment hooks.
Use a compatibility table before comparing prices
| Layer | Requirement to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| PHP | Supported branch, security-support date, selectable per site | Determines language features, security fixes, and upgrade risk |
| Database | MariaDB 10.11+ or MySQL 8.0+ for current WordPress; permitted engine and version | Controls query compatibility, performance, and upgrade paths |
| Extensions | curl, dom, fileinfo, hash, intl, mbstring, openssl, xml, zip as applicable | Missing modules can break updates, media handling, APIs, or internationalization |
| Web server | Apache, nginx, LiteSpeed, or another supported option; rewrite and FastCGI behavior | Affects URL routing, caching, headers, and application configuration |
| Resources | Memory, workers/processes, CPU policy, storage, and I/O limits | A site can fail even when the PHP version is correct if limits are too low |
| Transport security | Automatic certificates, renewal, HTTPS redirect, and maintained TLS settings | Protects logins, administration, and visitor traffic |
Ask the provider to answer each row for the exact plan and region you would buy. Marketing pages often describe a server-wide maximum; your account may receive a much lower per-site value.

Which PHP version should my host support?
For production in 2026, prefer PHP 8.4 or newer when your application and extensions are compatible. WordPress guidance lists PHP 8.3 or greater as a current requirement, while its Hosting Handbook recommends PHP 8.4 or later for production and records the support status and end-of-life dates below.
Understand the current PHP lifecycle
| PHP branch | Status or end date cited by the WordPress Hosting Handbook (2026) | Selection guidance |
|---|---|---|
| PHP 8.5 | End of life: 31 December 2029 | Choose if all application code and extensions are tested on it; do not make it the default solely because it is newest |
| PHP 8.4 | End of life: 31 December 2028 | Preferred production baseline where compatible |
| PHP 8.3 | Security-only support from 31 December 2025; end of life: 31 December 2027 | Acceptable for software that is not yet ready for 8.4, with an upgrade plan |
| PHP 8.2 | End of life: 31 December 2026 | Short-term compatibility exception only; schedule migration before the date |
A host should let you select the PHP version per site, switch versions without rebuilding the account, and test a new branch in staging. The Hosting Handbook’s server-environment guidance states: "Hosts should test their full stack before making a new PHP version the default for production environments." Ask how the provider tests its images, extensions, control panel, and backup tools—not just the PHP binary.
Check the upgrade and rollback policy
- Can you run two PHP branches on separate sites or staging copies?
- Is a version change reversible without restoring the entire account?
- Does the provider announce branch removals before security support ends?
- Are custom php.ini settings and extensions preserved after a switch?
- Can support identify which plugin or extension caused a fatal error after an upgrade?
Do not leave an application on an obsolete branch simply because it currently works. Unsupported PHP no longer receives normal security fixes, and an eventual forced migration is harder when several years of compatibility debt accumulate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow much PHP memory and which extensions do I need?
For WordPress, the Hosting Handbook gives a 128 MB minimum memory_limit, a 256 MB recommended default, and 512 MB or more for resource-intensive sites. Treat those as per-site PHP limits, not as the server’s total RAM.
Match memory to workload
| PHP memory_limit | Appropriate use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 128 MB | Minimum baseline for a small, lightly customized installation | Whether updates, image processing, imports, and security scans fit without exhausting memory |
| 256 MB | Recommended default for a typical production WordPress site | Whether the value is actually available to web requests and administrative tasks |
| 512 MB or more | Resource-intensive sites, large catalogs, builders, bulk imports, or heavy media processing | Worker counts, CPU limits, and process memory, because a high PHP limit alone does not create capacity |
Also ask for the number of PHP workers or processes, maximum execution time, upload_max_filesize, post_max_size, and input-variable limits. A site that has enough memory but only one or two workers can still queue requests during traffic spikes. Conversely, raising memory without controlling runaway scripts can let one account consume shared resources.
Confirm the extension set
Common WordPress requirements include curl, dom, fileinfo, hash, intl, mbstring, openssl, xml, and zip, as applicable to the application and its plugins. Have the host provide a module list for the exact PHP branch; an extension that exists on PHP 8.4 may be missing or compiled differently on another branch.
- curl: outbound HTTPS requests, updates, and API integrations.
- dom and xml: feed parsing, document processing, and libraries that use XML.
- fileinfo: MIME-type detection for uploads and security checks.
- hash: password, signature, and content-integrity operations.
- intl and mbstring: locale-aware formatting and multibyte text handling.
- openssl: encrypted connections and cryptographic functions.
- zip: package installation, backups, and archive handling.
Do not assume an extension can be installed later on shared hosting. If you need a module that is not listed, obtain written confirmation that the provider will enable it for your account and maintain it through PHP upgrades.

Is shared hosting secure enough for PHP?
Shared hosting can be secure for PHP when the provider isolates accounts, patches the platform, monitors abuse, and supplies recoverable backups. The word “shared” describes hardware or operating costs; it does not by itself reveal whether one compromised account can read another account’s files.
Ask how accounts are isolated
WordPress security guidance recommends running PHP applications with the account’s own username rather than a shared server username. Ask whether each site has separate file permissions, process identities, temporary directories, and resource controls. Request a plain-language explanation of what stops one customer’s PHP process from reading another customer’s files or database credentials.
- Per-account Unix users and restrictive file permissions
- Process and worker isolation with enforced CPU and memory limits
- Separate home directories and temporary paths
- Protection against symlink and cross-account traversal attacks
- Malware detection, incident containment, and customer notification procedures
- Centralized patching for the operating system, web server, PHP runtime, and control panel
- Access and error logs that you can review or export
A provider that cannot explain its isolation model is not giving you enough information to assess shared-hosting risk. Dedicated hardware can reduce noisy-neighbor effects, but it does not replace patching, least privilege, or application security.
What HTTPS and TLS features should PHP hosting include?
HTTPS should be a baseline feature, not a paid add-on that requires manual renewal. WordPress security guidance notes that HTTPS helps protect administrator logins and visitor traffic.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Verify the complete certificate workflow
- Confirm that the host issues certificates for the primary domain and required subdomains.
- Check that certificates renew automatically before expiration and that failed renewals generate an alert.
- Verify that HTTP requests are redirected to HTTPS without redirect loops.
- Ask whether modern TLS versions and cipher settings are maintained centrally.
- Test that administrative, login, API, and upload endpoints remain on HTTPS after migration.
- Confirm how certificates are replaced when an IP address, server, or domain changes.
Certificate issuance is only one part of transport security. The host should also patch the TLS stack, protect private keys, and document how mixed-content warnings or incorrect proxy headers are handled.
How should PHP-hosting backups and restores work?
Choose a host that can explain backup frequency, retention, storage separation, restore steps, and coverage for both files and databases. Official guidance calls for reliable backup and recovery methods but does not prescribe one universal retention period, so evaluate the provider’s policy against your recovery needs.
Questions that expose backup quality
- How often are automated backups created, and are database backups more frequent than full-account backups?
- How many restore points are retained, and does retention differ by plan?
- Are copies stored separately from the production server so a server failure or compromise cannot delete both?
- Can you restore one site, one database, or one file without overwriting unrelated accounts?
- What is the normal restore time, and who performs the work?
- Are backups encrypted in transit and at rest, and who can access them?
- When was the last restore test, and can the provider demonstrate the procedure in staging?
Keep an independent copy of critical data when the site is commercially important. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.

Can caching create PHP security problems?
Caching can reduce PHP execution and improve response times, but an incorrect cache scope can expose one visitor’s data to another or serve the wrong file. Treat cache behavior as a security setting as well as a performance setting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Inspect cache scope and exclusions
- Ask whether the cache is per site, per domain, or shared across accounts.
- Confirm that authenticated pages, carts, checkout, account areas, previews, and API responses bypass public caching.
- Verify that cache keys include the host, scheme, query parameters, cookies, and other values that change the response.
- Request a purge control that can clear one URL, one site, or the entire cache.
- Ask how quickly a purge propagates and whether stale objects can be served during an outage.
- Find out how cache configuration is rolled back after a bad deployment.
Test caching with two separate sessions: an anonymous browser and an authenticated account. Confirm that private content never appears in the anonymous response and that a purge removes old PHP output before a release is considered complete.
Do I need SSH, staging, and deployment tools?
SSH and staging are not mandatory for every brochure site, but they significantly reduce risk when you update code, plugins, databases, or configuration. The right level of administration depends on whether the provider manages the stack or your team does.
Managed versus self-managed administration
| Capability | Managed PHP hosting | Self-managed or developer-oriented hosting |
|---|---|---|
| PHP and OS patching | Provider schedules and tests patches; you control application compatibility | Your team plans, tests, and applies most updates |
| SSH access | May be restricted, disabled, or limited to approved commands | Usually expected for deployments, diagnostics, and automation |
| Staging | Often offered as a one-click clone with database and file synchronization | You create and maintain the staging environment |
| Logs and observability | Dashboard summaries and support-assisted access may be available | Broader log, process, and monitoring access is typically your responsibility |
| Scaling | Provider may resize workers, memory, or the plan for you | You select resources and tune the web server, PHP-FPM, and database |
| Best fit | Teams prioritizing lower administration overhead | Teams with system skills and custom deployment requirements |
When SSH and staging pay off
- Use SSH for repeatable deployments, database exports, permission repairs, cron inspection, and command-line application tools.
- Use staging to test PHP upgrades, extension changes, plugin updates, and cache rules against a copy of production.
- Require separate credentials and a way to restrict SSH keys, rather than sharing one administrator password.
- Check whether staging is isolated from public indexing and whether its database contains anonymized or protected customer data.
- Confirm that scheduled jobs, environment variables, and file permissions behave the same in staging and production.
If you rarely change code and the provider supplies safe updates and support, a managed plan may be sufficient. If you deploy frequently or run custom frameworks, lack of shell access and staging can become an operational bottleneck.
How do I compare PHP hosts beyond price?
Compare the operational promises that determine downtime, security exposure, and migration effort. Build a side-by-side scorecard for the exact plan, region, and contract term rather than comparing the cheapest introductory price.
Recommended Free Tools
| Comparison axis | Evidence to request | Red flags |
|---|---|---|
| PHP versions and policy | Available branches, security-support dates, per-site selection, upgrade and rollback process | Only one old branch, forced upgrades, or no stated lifecycle |
| Database | Engine and versions, storage limits, backups, remote access, charset support | Unspecified version or shared credentials with no isolation explanation |
| Extensions and limits | Module list, memory_limit, workers, CPU, execution and upload limits | Server-wide figures with no account-level values |
| HTTPS/TLS | Automatic issuance and renewal, redirects, key handling, modern TLS maintenance | Manual renewals or certificate fees required for basic domains |
| Isolation and patching | Account identity, permissions, process controls, patch schedule, malware response | “Shared but secure” with no technical explanation |
| Backups | Frequency, retention, off-site copies, selective restore, tested procedure | Backups described only as “regular” or stored on the same server |
| Caching | Scope, private-page exclusions, purge controls, rollback, cache headers | No purge mechanism or unclear cross-site boundaries |
| Development workflow | SSH, staging, Git, cron, logs, deployment hooks, database tools | Production-only editing with no audit trail |
| Support and scaling | Support channels, escalation path, geography, resource upgrade path, SLA terms | Sales-only contact or no documented escalation |
Calculate total cost using renewal rates, required backups, staging, additional workers, storage, migration help, and support—not just the first-term promotion. A lower monthly fee is not economical if a missing extension or failed restore forces an emergency migration.
What should I ask a PHP-hosting provider before buying?
Send the same written questionnaire to every provider and save the replies with your account records. Written answers make differences visible and give support a reference if the advertised configuration changes.

Choosing an old PHP branch because a plugin has not been tested
Run the plugin and theme test in staging, identify the incompatible component, and replace or update it before production. Remaining on PHP 8.2 beyond 31 December 2026 leaves the site outside the lifecycle stated by the Hosting Handbook.

PHP execution, workers, CPU time, and database performance usually limit dynamic sites before raw disk space does. Ask for enforceable per-site resource values and what happens when they are exceeded.
Assuming a control panel proves security
A polished dashboard does not tell you whether accounts are isolated, logs are retained, or patches are timely. Evaluate the underlying process identity, permissions, patching, and incident response.
Confusing a backup feature with a tested recovery plan
Confirm that both files and databases are covered, copies are separated from production, and a selective restore is possible. Request evidence of a restore test rather than accepting a generic “daily backup” label.
Enabling full-page caching on private content
Start with conservative exclusions, test authenticated and anonymous sessions, and document purge and rollback procedures before enabling aggressive caching.

How can I choose and migrate with the least risk?
Use a staged decision process so compatibility and recovery are proven before DNS changes.
- Inventory: document the application, PHP and database requirements, extensions, limits, traffic pattern, cron jobs, and deployment method.
- Shortlist: remove any plan that cannot state PHP lifecycle dates, database versions, extension availability, isolation, backups, TLS automation, and cache controls.
- Obtain written configuration: record per-site memory, workers, CPU policy, storage, logs, SSH, staging, and support escalation for the exact plan.
- Build staging: copy files and a database, protect private data, disable indexing, and reproduce cron, environment variables, and web-server rules.
- Test the target PHP branch: run application tests, login and checkout flows, media processing, API calls, scheduled jobs, and update routines while monitoring error logs.
- Test security controls: verify HTTPS redirects, certificate renewal status, account permissions, cache exclusions, purge behavior, and access-log visibility.
- Prove recovery: restore a file and database into a separate location and document the exact commands or support request needed.
- Cut over: lower DNS time-to-live in advance, freeze content briefly, perform a final backup, switch DNS, verify both HTTP and HTTPS, and watch logs and resource usage.
- Keep the rollback path: retain the old host and a verified backup until the new environment has passed your normal monitoring window.
The best PHP host is the one that can run your complete, tested stack with a maintained PHP branch and gives you a credible way to prevent, detect, and recover from failure. Price matters only after those requirements are satisfied.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep using PHP 8.2 after 31 December 2026?
A site may continue running technically, but that branch reaches end of life on 31 December 2026 under the lifecycle cited by the WordPress Hosting Handbook. Treat continued use as a temporary compatibility exception, isolate the site where possible, and schedule testing and migration before the date.
Do I need a dedicated server for a PHP application?
Not necessarily. A well-isolated shared or managed environment can meet the application’s needs when its per-site workers, memory, CPU policy, patching, and backup controls are documented; dedicated resources become more attractive when you require predictable capacity or system-level customization.
How often should I test a hosting restore?
There is no single retention or testing interval prescribed by the cited guidance. Set a schedule based on how much data you can afford to lose, and test after provider changes, backup-policy changes, or major application migrations rather than relying on the existence of backup files.
Is nginx better than Apache for PHP hosting?
Neither is universally better; compatibility with your application, rewrite rules, PHP handler, caching layer, and team’s troubleshooting skills matters more. Confirm the web server used by the plan and test redirects, uploads, authentication, and scheduled jobs on that exact stack.
