These are starting points, not guaranteed winners—fit and sound depend on the individual model and your ears.
First, understand what the labels mean
“Clip-on” and “ear-hook” describe how an earbud is supported. “Bone conduction” describes how sound is transmitted. That distinction matters because an open-ear product can combine a support structure with a different sound-delivery approach.
- Clip-on: A clip holds the earbud around the outer ear. Most clip-on open-ear earbuds use air conduction, directing sound through air toward the ear canal.
- Ear-hook: A hook extends behind the ear to support the earbud. Most are air-conduction designs, though a hook can also support a bone-conduction product.
- Bone conduction: Transducers rest against the face and send vibrations through the cheekbones and skull toward the inner ear. The ear canal is not the route used to deliver the sound.
As Bose explains, air conduction carries sound through the ear canal, while bone conduction carries vibration through the cheekbones toward the inner ear. Bose describes bone-conduction products as typically weaker in bass and air-conduction products as offering fuller overall sound. That is manufacturer guidance, not a controlled comparison of every current model.
Which style should you try first?

Soundcore’s fit guide, dated September 24, 2026, says clip-ons usually leave more space behind the ear for glasses and hats, while ear-hooks usually provide a steadier anchor during repeated movement. The guide also cautions that ear shape, frame thickness, hat design, and the specific product can change the result. Treat these as fit hypotheses to test, not categorical advantages.

How to test fit with glasses, hats, and movement
- Put on your usual glasses or sunglasses first. This reproduces the frame position you need the earbuds to coexist with.
- Add the earbuds and check contact points. Notice pressure around the outer ear, behind the ear, and where any bone-conduction transducer touches your face.
- Move your frames and head normally. Check whether the earbuds push the frames, shift when you turn your head, or create a pressure point.
- Wear the combination for 20–30 minutes. Soundcore recommends this as a practical comfort check; it is not a clinical standard.
- Repeat with the headwear and activity you actually use. Walk, jog, or perform the relevant movement in a safe setting, and see whether retention and comfort remain acceptable.
One short try-on may not reveal discomfort that builds over time. If possible, use the return policy to evaluate a model during ordinary wear before committing to it.
Sound, leakage, and awareness trade-offs
Open ears do not guarantee awareness
An open fit can make surrounding sounds easier to hear than a sealed earbud, but what you notice depends on listening volume, ambient noise, attention, fit, and product design. Open-ear headphones do not make running, cycling, or road use safe; keep paying attention to your surroundings.

Leakage and bass are model-dependent
Omdia’s 2026 report identifies persistent open-ear constraints: sound leakage, limited low-frequency performance, and sensitivity to wind noise. Leakage varies with the fit, speaker position, acoustic design, and volume. If you need private listening in a quiet room, strong isolation, or dependable protection from loud noise, open-ear headphones may not suit that need.
These trade-offs have not stopped the category from growing: Omdia reported that open-ear products accounted for more than 10% of the global personal-audio market and that annual shipments exceeded 30 million units by 2025. Those figures describe the market, not the performance of any one design.

Compare models, not just form factors
Architecture narrows the options, but it does not tell you whether a particular product will sound good, stay comfortable, or suit your routine. Compare the details that affect your use:
- Comfort: Identify pressure points and whether the fit remains comfortable during a longer session.
- Retention: Try the movements you expect to make rather than relying on the product’s shape alone.
- Sound: Listen at a normal, safe volume and assess speech, music, and bass for your own preferences.
- Leakage and calls: Check how much sound reaches people nearby and how your voice comes through in your usual environment.
- Battery and resistance: Confirm battery life and the water- or dust-resistance rating against your activities. A rating is not a promise that every exposure is safe.
- Price, availability, and returns: Check current local listings and return terms; lineups, stock, and specifications can change.
Examples illustrate why model-level checking matters. Soundcore describes the AeroFit 2 as having four hook positions and an adjustable ear-hook fit; its leakage and IP55 statements are manufacturer claims, so check the current product listing for details. Philips’ product sheet for the TAA8606WT/00, issued May 10, 2023, identifies it as bone-conduction true wireless with a flexible rubber hook, an IPX5 rating, and stated playback of four hours for the earbuds plus 12 hours for the case. That dated sheet is a specification example, not a current recommendation; verify present availability and specifications. Shokz OpenFit and OpenDots lines and Bose Ultra Open also appear in current product coverage, but a preferred model depends on fit, activity, budget, and the latest product generation. TechRadar’s guide includes hands-on testing, while its rankings remain editorial judgments rather than universal results.

Protect your hearing with any headphone type
Open-ear does not mean hearing-safe at every volume. The CDC says the effect of noise on hearing depends on how loud the sound is and how long it lasts. Turn the volume down, take breaks, move away from loud noise, and use hearing protection when loud noise cannot be avoided. Listening through open-ear headphones is not a substitute for hearing protection.
