Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see what is taking space. A 256GB model can suit someone who streams most media and uses relatively little storage; 512GB or 1TB is worth considering when local photos, videos, downloads, or apps take up more room. There is no universal capacity threshold that fits every iPhone owner.
Start with your current iPhone’s storage
On your current iPhone, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the space used, the largest categories and apps, and whether your phone is close to full. Apple says this screen shows app storage use and may offer recommendations for freeing space. Photos, music, apps, and other content all use device storage. Look beyond the total. A phone near capacity because of a few old downloads presents a different situation from one whose photo library, video files, and apps keep growing. Think about what you intend to retain locally on your next phone, how often you download media for offline use, and how long you expect to keep the device. These are practical decision factors, not official Apple thresholds.
How to choose between 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB

The table is a decision guide, not a claim that Apple assigns these capacities to particular types of users. No universal numeric cutoff establishes when someone should move from 256GB to 512GB or 1TB. Use your own storage breakdown and habits instead of an assumed average-user profile.

Check that your chosen iPhone model offers that capacity
Storage options vary by model. For example, Apple lists 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB for iPhone 17 Pro, while the standard iPhone 17 specifications list 256GB and 512GB. Confirm the capacity options for the exact iPhone you plan to buy; do not assume every model offers all three.
Compare prices for the same model, capacity, country, and seller before deciding whether a larger tier is worthwhile. The price difference can change by region and over time, so there is no single premium that applies to every purchase.

Device storage is not iCloud storage
Device storage is the built-in space in the iPhone. iCloud storage is a separate service for cloud data and syncing; buying more iCloud storage does not increase the iPhone’s built-in capacity. Apple describes the distinction in its device storage guidance.
With iCloud Photos and Optimise iPhone Storage enabled, full-resolution photos and videos can be kept in iCloud while space-saving copies stay on the iPhone. This can reduce the space a photo library uses locally, but it requires enough iCloud storage. It does not remove local storage needs for apps, downloads, and other content. Ways to make a smaller capacity work
If your current phone is filling up, check what can be managed before assuming you need the next capacity tier. Apple’s storage screen may suggest actions, and you can decide whether local media or cloud access better suits your preferences.
- Review iPhone Storage to identify large apps and content you no longer need.
- Use Optimise iPhone Storage for photos and videos if you use iCloud Photos and have enough iCloud space.
- Transfer media you do not need on the phone, or remove downloads you can fetch again later.
- Keep in mind that these options trade convenience, local availability, or cloud storage for built-in capacity; none turns a lower-capacity iPhone into a higher-capacity one.
Why usable space is below the number on the box
The advertised capacity is not all available for personal content. Apple states, “1GB = 1 billion bytes, and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.” Formatting and the operating system use some of that space. The usable amount can therefore be less than the capacity printed in the specifications; do not treat the advertised number as a precise allowance for photos, videos, apps, or other files. Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro specifications include this capacity note.
