Choose gaming software by the problem it solves, not by a promise of more frames. Start with Windows’ built-in tools to identify CPU, memory, disk, storage, startup, update, and malware issues. Add a launcher, chat client, overlay, recording tool, driver utility, or performance advisor only when you use its specific function and have checked its compatibility with your Windows version, graphics hardware, game API, and display mode.
No utility can compensate for every cause of a slow PC. Limited free storage, excessive startup activity, outdated software, malware, and hardware that no longer meets a game’s needs can all be responsible. A lean setup usually has fewer always-running programs, current drivers and Windows updates, and only the features you actually use while playing.
What makes gaming software essential?
Software is essential when a game or a clearly defined task depends on it. A launcher may be required to install and update a title; a chat client may be necessary for your group; a graphics-driver package may provide the supported driver and control panel for your GPU; and a monitoring or recording tool may be justified if you are diagnosing a problem or creating video. Everything else is optional until it demonstrates a need on your particular PC.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not treat a long list of launchers, “boosters,” cleaners, overlays, RGB controllers, and telemetry tools as a standard gaming build. Each program can add startup entries, background processes, notifications, overlays, disk activity, or update services. The useful question is whether that cost buys a function you will use during the current gaming session.

A practical test for every candidate
- Problem: What specific problem does it solve—installation, communication, recording, wrong GPU selection, frame-time diagnosis, or something else?
- Compatibility: Does it support your Windows edition, GPU generation, graphics API, and game display mode?
- Runtime cost: Does it need to start with Windows, or can it run only when you launch it?
- Overlap: Does Windows or your existing driver software already provide the same function?
- Provenance: Is it obtained from the game publisher, Microsoft, or the GPU vendor, and does it receive security updates?
If you cannot answer those questions, leave the utility uninstalled until a real need appears. Official documentation describes features and compatibility, not a universal frame-rate gain; avoid claims that a utility will improve every PC or game.
How do I find out what is actually slowing down my PC?
Measure first, then change one thing at a time. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance identifies limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, malware, and hardware limitations as possible causes, so a gaming utility is only one branch of the diagnosis.
- Check storage. Open Windows Settings and review the storage page for the system drive. Remove temporary files and uninstall applications you no longer use, while keeping game saves and installers you still need.
- Inspect current load. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. On the Processes tab, sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk to see whether an application is consuming resources while you play. - Review startup impact. In Task Manager, open Startup apps. Disable only entries you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in. Leave unknown items, driver components, accessibility tools, and security software alone until you identify them.
- Install updates. Apply pending Windows updates, game updates, and graphics-driver updates from their official channels. An outdated component can cause compatibility problems that a cleanup utility cannot fix.
- Scan for malware. Use your installed Windows security protection or another trusted, current security product. Microsoft recommends checking for malware as part of performance troubleshooting; disabling protective features is not a supported gaming optimization.
- Reproduce the issue. Start the same game and scene after each change. Note whether the symptom is slow Windows startup, stuttering, a high-latency network feeling, a game using the wrong GPU, or a full drive. Different symptoms require different tools.
If the processor, graphics card, memory capacity, or storage device is below a game’s current requirements, software housekeeping may produce little improvement. Older hardware can remain the limiting factor after unnecessary background programs are removed.
Which Windows tools should I use before installing another utility?
Use Windows controls for routine housekeeping because they expose the relevant information without adding another resident process. The following table maps common needs to the built-in action and the decision that follows.
| Need | Built-in control | What to look for | Next decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find a process using resources | Task Manager > Processes | CPU, Memory, Disk, or Network columns staying high while you play | Close an app you recognize, or investigate its publisher before changing it |
| Reduce sign-in delay | Task Manager > Startup apps | High-impact entries that you do not need at sign-in | Disable only those entries; launch them manually when needed |
| Recover disk space | Settings > System > Storage | Temporary files, unused applications, and a nearly full system drive | Clean or uninstall selectively, then confirm games still have their libraries |
| Stay compatible | Windows Update and the game’s own updater | Pending operating-system, driver, or game updates | Install from the official source and restart if requested |
| Check for malicious activity | Windows security controls | Detection history, active protection, and scan results | Remediate detections; do not remove security software to chase an unverified FPS claim |
Close applications you are not using before launching a demanding game. This is different from indiscriminately ending Windows processes: Task Manager shows what is running, but a process name alone is not enough evidence that it is safe to terminate.
How should I choose launchers, chat apps, overlays, and recording tools?
Keep the application that is required for the game or your group, then decide whether its overlay, startup entry, and notifications are required. A launcher can be essential for authentication and patching while its overlay is optional; a chat client can be useful during a team session while its auto-start behavior is unnecessary.

Separate installation from background behavior
Many clients offer separate controls for starting with Windows, remaining in the notification area, showing an in-game overlay, checking updates, and recording clips. Turn off only the behaviors you do not use. If a game needs a launcher open for authentication, keep that launcher running but disable its overlay or hardware acceleration only if the application documents those controls and you have a reproducible problem.
Use one tool for one job
Running two overlays, two frame counters, or two recording services creates overlapping hooks and notifications. Select one recorder and one monitoring method for a troubleshooting session. After the issue is understood, remove or stop the diagnostic tool instead of leaving every instrument active for every game.
Test with overlays disabled when a game misbehaves
Crashes, input problems, flickering, or unexplained stutter can result from an overlay conflict even when the underlying game is healthy. Disable overlays one at a time, restart the game, and record which change affects the symptom. Do not assume the overlay is the cause merely because turning it off coincides with a smoother session; repeat the test in the same scene.
When is GPU-vendor software worth adding?
Install graphics-vendor software when you need its supported driver, per-game settings, capture feature, or a documented diagnostic function. It should complement Windows rather than duplicate a cleanup or “boost” utility.
What Radeon Game Advisor is intended to do
AMD describes Radeon Game Advisor as real-time game-performance analysis that can recommend in-game graphics settings to balance image quality and performance. That makes it a targeted diagnostic aid, not a universal optimizer or a guarantee of a particular FPS increase.

It states that APU graphics are not supported. Those details describe the scope of that documentation, not a promise that every later Radeon configuration has identical support; check the current Radeon release notes and the game’s display mode before relying on the feature.

If your game runs in borderless or windowed mode, uses an unsupported API, or relies on integrated APU graphics, choose another diagnostic method. Do not install an old utility solely because an archived compatibility list mentions your hardware.
How do I enable Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization?
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-window modes. Microsoft says it moves eligible games from the legacy blt presentation model to the flip model, which can reduce frame latency and enable supported Auto HDR and variable refresh rate features. Microsoft does not publish one FPS improvement that applies to all games.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the setting for Optimizations for windowed games and turn it on.
- If Windows offers a per-game choice, select the game’s executable and apply the setting there.
- Restart the game before judging the result. Confirm that the title is using a supported DirectX 10 or 11 renderer and windowed or borderless mode.
A game running exclusive full screen, using another graphics API, or lacking support for the relevant display features may not benefit. Variable refresh rate and Auto HDR also depend on a compatible display and Windows configuration, so enabling the switch does not create those capabilities by itself.
What is Xbox mode on Windows 11, and should it start automatically?
Microsoft’s full-screen Xbox mode documentation applies to Windows 11 version 24H2 or later in supported markets. It provides a controller-oriented full-screen experience. When Enter Xbox mode on startup is enabled, Windows limits background processes while gaming to improve performance.
Use it if you want a controller-first shell and your edition, market, and Windows version support it. Leave it off if you regularly work with desktop applications, multiple monitors, accessibility software, or background services that must remain available. This mode is an optional workflow choice, not a replacement for diagnosing a high CPU, memory, disk, or malware problem.
How can I keep background load under control?
Make a deliberate startup profile rather than trying to reach zero processes. A security product, audio driver, accessibility service, or device driver may be necessary even when it does not look like gaming software.

- Start with a clean session: Before a demanding game, close browsers, file synchronization jobs, installers, and video editors that you are not using.
- Keep communication intentional: Start the chat client for a team session, but disable auto-start and notifications when you play alone.
- Limit capture tools: Record only when you need a clip or stream. Stop the recorder afterward and check that it has not left a background service running.
- Control hardware utilities: RGB, fan, and peripheral programs can be useful for a specific device. Keep the one that controls hardware you are using and remove duplicate controllers.
- Recheck after updates: Major game or Windows updates can add startup entries or reset overlay settings. Review Task Manager rather than assuming your previous profile remains unchanged.
Do not end a process solely because it has a familiar-sounding name, and do not disable security protections to make a benchmark look better. If you need to identify an unfamiliar entry, inspect its publisher and installation location, then research it through the software maker’s official support channel.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchHow do Windows version and support dates affect software choices?
Version support is part of compatibility. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes stopped. A game or utility may still launch on Windows 10, but the operating system no longer receives the same supported security and maintenance path as Windows 11.
Before installing a new utility, record your Windows edition and version, GPU model, driver version, game renderer, and display mode. Windows 11 gaming features have their own version and market requirements, and a feature documented for Windows 11 version 24H2 should not be assumed to exist on an earlier release or on Windows 10.
How do I compare two candidate utilities?
Use the same criteria for a vendor utility, a third-party monitor, and a launcher. If two programs score similarly, prefer the one that can run on demand, comes from a clearly identified publisher, and duplicates fewer functions already present in Windows or your driver package.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Prefer |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Does it solve the symptom you measured? | A narrowly targeted feature over a general “booster” promise |
| Compatibility | Which Windows versions, GPU generations, APIs, and display modes are documented? | A current support statement matching your configuration |
| Background behavior | Does it add startup tasks, services, overlays, or scheduled scans? | Manual launch or clearly controllable background activity |
| Overlap | Can Task Manager, Storage settings, Windows Graphics settings, or your driver already do it? | The existing built-in control unless the added feature is genuinely useful |
| Security and updates | Who publishes it, how is it updated, and what permissions does it request? | Official distribution, transparent permissions, and a maintained release channel |
What should I do when a new utility makes gaming worse?
Undo changes in a controlled order so you can identify the cause.
- Exit the game and the new utility.
- Use Task Manager to see whether the utility’s process or updater remains active.
- Disable its overlay, recording, startup entry, or scheduled scan individually rather than changing every setting at once.
- Restart Windows if the utility installed a service or driver, then reproduce the same game scenario.
- If the symptom remains, uninstall the utility through Windows Settings and reinstall only the official graphics driver or game component you actually need.
- Recheck Windows updates, storage, malware scans, and hardware requirements before adding another program.
For a game that suddenly uses the wrong GPU, start with Windows’ per-app graphics selection and the driver control panel rather than installing a booster. For frame-time spikes, compare the game with overlays and recorders disabled, then inspect CPU, memory, disk, and GPU utilization. For slow sign-in, review startup impact and storage first.

What does a lean gaming setup look like?
A sensible setup is different for each player, but these profiles show how to make the decision concrete.
Competitive player focused on latency
- Required game launcher and anti-cheat components
- One communication app, started only for team sessions
- One frame-time or hardware monitor used during diagnosis, not permanently
- Unneeded overlays, recorders, browsers, and update clients closed before play
Single-player player focused on image quality
- Required launcher and current graphics driver
- Windows 11 windowed-game optimization when the game and display mode qualify
- HDR or variable-refresh settings enabled only when the monitor supports them
- Recording and chat tools launched only when needed
Creator who records or streams
- One maintained recording or streaming application
- One communication tool if the production requires it
- Task Manager checks for CPU, memory, disk, and network contention before a session
- A saved profile that turns capture services off when gaming or editing is finished
In all three cases, Windows updates, storage maintenance, startup review, and malware protection remain baseline tasks. The profile changes which optional tools are active, not the need to diagnose the underlying machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can disabling startup apps damage Windows?
Disabling an entry in Task Manager’s Startup apps list normally prevents it from launching at sign-in; it does not uninstall the program. The risk comes from disabling a component you do not recognize, such as a driver, security service, or accessibility tool, so identify the publisher and restore the entry if a device or feature stops working.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Should I install a separate PC gaming booster?
Only if it has a documented function that Windows and your graphics software do not provide and you can turn its background activity off. A general promise of faster games is not evidence of a reliable gain across different hardware and titles.
How can I tell whether a game is using the wrong graphics card?
Watch GPU activity for the game in Task Manager while it is running, then compare the active adapter with the GPU you intend to use. If it is wrong, use Windows’ per-application Graphics settings or the graphics driver’s application profile before adding another optimizer.
Do I need an overlay to monitor frame rate?
No. An overlay is convenient but optional, and it can conflict with some games. For a diagnosis, use one monitoring method, compare the same scene with the overlay disabled, and keep the tool only if its information is useful to you.
Is a nearly full drive a gaming-software problem?
It is primarily a storage-maintenance problem. Windows’ Storage settings can identify temporary files and unused applications; free space may improve general responsiveness, but it will not replace hardware that fails a game’s CPU, GPU, memory, or storage requirements.
