For most people experimenting with local AI, 16GB of system RAM is the practical starting point. Current LM Studio guidance recommends at least 16GB on Windows and 16GB or more on Apple Silicon. An 8GB Mac can still handle smaller models with modest context windows, while larger models, long conversations, multiple simultaneous requests, or memory-heavy apps justify more than 16GB.

There is no universal RAM number because the model’s parameter count, quantization, context length, runtime, GPU offload, and other open applications all change the footprint. If your computer has a discrete graphics card, dedicated VRAM is a separate fit-and-speed limit; system RAM cannot be added to the GPU’s VRAM.

How much RAM is enough to run AI locally?

Use 16GB as a sensible general baseline, not a guaranteed minimum. It aligns with LM Studio’s current recommendations for Windows and Apple Silicon, but the model and workload you choose matter more than the headline number.

System memory What it can reasonably handle Important limits
8GB Small, quantized models on supported Apple Silicon Macs; short prompts and modest context Little headroom for other applications, long chat history, tools, or concurrent requests
16GB General local-model experimentation on Windows or Apple Silicon; one moderate workload at a time Large models, very long contexts, and several requests can still exhaust memory
More than 16GB Larger models, longer context windows, CPU inference, GPU offload, or heavy applications running alongside the model The right amount depends on the selected model, quantization, runtime, and concurrency
Discrete GPU system Models that fit the card’s dedicated VRAM can run faster through GPU acceleration System RAM and VRAM are separate pools; extra RAM does not enlarge VRAM

Think of these as planning bands rather than hard compatibility guarantees. A model may load with less memory but become unusably slow, fail when the context grows, or crash when another application consumes the remaining headroom.

What determines the RAM requirement for a local model?

Five variables dominate the calculation: model weights, quantization, context length, runtime behavior, and everything else competing for memory. Change any one of them and the same computer can move from comfortable to constrained.

Model weights and parameter count

A model’s parameters are stored as weights. Larger parameter counts generally mean more memory just to hold the model, before the runtime allocates working buffers for inference. A 7-billion-parameter model and a 70-billion-parameter model are therefore not interchangeable workloads, even if both are downloaded through the same application.

Quantization

Quantization stores weights with fewer bits, reducing memory use and often making local inference possible on consumer hardware. The trade-off is that aggressive quantization can reduce response quality or change the model’s behavior. NVIDIA identifies NVFP4 and Q4_K_M as examples of formats intended to balance throughput, accuracy, and memory requirements; the exact footprint still depends on the runtime and model implementation.

Context length

Context is more than the latest prompt. It includes the conversation history, system instructions, tool outputs, and any retrieved documents supplied to the model. As the context window grows, the runtime must keep more intermediate state, so a model that fits with a short chat may fail when you select a very long context.

Runtime, offload, and workload

The inference application decides how much memory to reserve and whether layers run on the CPU, GPU, or both. CPU-only execution uses system RAM; GPU offload uses VRAM for the portions placed on the graphics card and may still use system RAM for the remainder. Other applications, browser tabs, virtual machines, and background services reduce the memory actually available to the model.

Concurrent requests

Serving several requests at once is not free. Ollama’s documentation explains that parallel requests can increase allocation because context is multiplied across requests. A configuration that is stable for one chat may therefore run out of memory when a second user, agent, or batch job starts.

How can I estimate RAM before installing a model?

Choose the model and workload first, then check whether your available memory leaves headroom. There is no reliable one-number formula that covers every runtime, but the following process exposes the variables that matter.

  1. Identify the exact model variant. Record the parameter count, file format, and quantization level. “The same model” can have materially different files and memory needs when you switch from full precision to a quantized release.
  2. Set a realistic context target. Include the prompt, expected chat history, system instructions, retrieved text, and tool output. Do not size the machine for a tiny test prompt if your real use case requires long documents.
  3. Decide where inference will run. On a CPU, the model and working data draw from system RAM. With a discrete GPU, determine how much of the model can fit in VRAM and what the runtime will leave in system memory.
  4. Account for simultaneous work. Add any other models, parallel requests, image or audio tools, development environments, and normal desktop applications you plan to keep open.
  5. Leave operating headroom. A model that consumes nearly all installed memory may load but still trigger swapping, stalls, or an out-of-memory error when the context expands. Reserve capacity for the operating system and the runtime’s temporary buffers.
  6. Run a representative test. Start with one request, use the context length you expect in practice, and watch memory while generating. Then test the maximum number of concurrent requests you actually need.

Application labels such as “recommended RAM” are starting points, not measurements of your particular prompt, quantization, or driver. The safest estimate is a test using the exact model file and runtime you intend to keep.

Does quantization let a smaller-RAM computer run bigger models?

Usually, yes: quantization lowers the memory consumed by model weights, but it does not remove every other allocation. You still need room for the context, runtime buffers, and operating system, and quality can vary between quantization levels.

Lower-bit formats are useful when a full-precision model exceeds your hardware. Q4_K_M and NVFP4 are commonly cited balance points, but a format name alone does not predict the final footprint. Different runtimes may use different kernels, temporary buffers, or GPU-splitting strategies, so compare the model file’s documented requirements with your chosen application.

Do not assume that the smallest file is always the best choice. Very aggressive quantization may reduce factual accuracy, instruction following, or multilingual performance. If quality matters, test the same prompts across two quantization levels and measure both memory use and answer quality before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much context length and concurrency can my RAM support?

Shorter context and fewer simultaneous requests reduce memory pressure; long context and parallel serving multiply it. Context is retained state, not merely text being displayed on screen.

For a single chat, every turn that remains in the conversation can increase the active context. Retrieved passages, source files, and tool results add tokens even when they are hidden behind an interface. If a model works at 4,000 tokens but fails at 32,000, the model weights have not changed—the retained context and associated cache have.

Parallel serving compounds this effect. Two requests with similar context lengths can require roughly two sets of context state, subject to runtime optimizations. Keep concurrency at one while validating a machine, then increase it gradually and monitor memory rather than assuming the model’s single-user behavior will scale linearly.

Long-context demonstrations from Apple illustrate why a simple “model size equals RAM” rule fails. Apple Machine Learning Research reported measurements on one Mac Studio with 512GB of memory and a 65,536-token context: Qwen 3.8 27B used up to 68GB, while Mistral Medium 3.5 128B used up to 158GB. Those are model- and configuration-specific measurements, not ordinary minimums for local AI.

What is the difference between system RAM and GPU VRAM?

System RAM serves the operating system and CPU-side work; dedicated VRAM is the graphics card’s own high-bandwidth memory. A model must fit the memory pool used by the layers you want to accelerate, and the pools are not interchangeable in the usual desktop setup.

NVIDIA advises choosing a model that fits comfortably in available GPU memory. If the model is larger than VRAM, a runtime may offload some layers to system RAM, but that can reduce speed and increase traffic across the bus. Adding system RAM can make CPU inference or partial offload possible; it does not turn a 8GB graphics card into a 16GB card.

When comparing computers, record both figures separately:

  • System RAM or Apple unified memory: capacity available to the operating system, model, context cache, and applications.
  • Dedicated VRAM: capacity available directly to a discrete GPU.
  • Model and quantization: the weights that must be placed in one or both pools.
  • Context and concurrency: retained state that grows with prompt length and simultaneous requests.
  • Runtime support: whether your chosen application can use the CPU, GPU, or split configuration efficiently.

How does Apple unified memory change the calculation?

Apple Silicon shares one memory pool between the CPU, GPU, model, and the rest of macOS, so the installed figure is not entirely available to model weights. The operating system and open applications draw from the same pool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LM Studio’s current documentation recommends 16GB or more for Apple Silicon, while noting that 8GB Macs may run smaller models with modest context sizes. On a unified-memory Mac, close memory-heavy applications and choose a realistic context target before concluding that a model is too large; the model competes directly with the desktop for the same capacity.

At the extreme end, Apple Machine Learning Research reported that Muse Spark Open’s model footprint was about 493GB in NVFP4, and that intermediate inference computation also required memory. In that configuration it could not fit on a single 512GB machine. This example demonstrates how a particular model and runtime can exceed consumer-scale memory; it is not a recommendation to buy 512GB for ordinary experimentation.

What should Windows users plan for?

Plan on at least 16GB of system RAM for general local-model use, then size upward for larger models, long contexts, or GPU offload. LM Studio lists at least 16GB for Windows in its current system-requirements guidance.

On a Windows desktop with a discrete NVIDIA GPU, start with the card’s VRAM when selecting a model for acceleration, and treat system RAM as a separate budget for CPU layers, context, and applications. A machine with ample RAM can still be limited by a small GPU, while a high-VRAM card can still be starved by insufficient system memory or an oversized context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upgradeable desktops have a practical advantage: if monitoring shows that system memory is the constraint, adding a compatible kit can help. Verify the motherboard’s supported capacity, memory type, channel configuration, and operating-system limits first. A RAM upgrade cannot increase VRAM and is unnecessary if your actual bottleneck is the graphics card.

Which RAM capacity fits common local-AI scenarios?

Match capacity to the workload you will keep running, not to a model’s marketing label. These scenarios show how to make that choice without treating any band as a universal guarantee.

8GB: occasional, lightweight use

An 8GB system can be workable for smaller quantized models, especially on supported Apple Silicon Macs, with short chats and few other applications open. Expect to manage context carefully and avoid concurrent requests. If the operating system begins compressing or paging memory, generation may become painfully slow even when the model technically loads.

16GB: the balanced starting point

Sixteen gigabytes is the most defensible starting purchase for someone who wants to try local text models without targeting unusually large models. It leaves more room than 8GB for the operating system and a normal desktop workload, but a long-context assistant, a large model, or several simultaneous sessions can still exceed it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

32GB: more headroom for serious experimentation

Consider 32GB when you expect to switch among larger quantized models, keep development tools and browser tabs open, use retrieval or tool calls, or run CPU inference and GPU offload together. It is a capacity choice for flexibility, not a guarantee that every model will fit.

64GB and beyond: large contexts or demanding local serving

Higher capacities become relevant when your selected models and context targets are demonstrably larger than a 16GB or 32GB workflow, or when you serve multiple requests. Use the model’s measured footprint and your concurrency target to justify the expense; do not infer a requirement from a dramatic large-model example alone.

What are the signs that RAM is the bottleneck?

Memory pressure appears as failed loads, severe slowdowns, swapping, or instability when context or concurrency increases. Check the symptom before buying hardware.

  • Model refuses to load: reduce quantization footprint, context length, or GPU-offload target, then retry with other applications closed.
  • Generation starts normally but slows over time: the retained conversation or retrieved material may be expanding the context cache.
  • Everything becomes sluggish: the operating system may be compressing or paging memory; stop other applications and lower the workload.
  • One chat works but two fail: parallel requests are multiplying context allocations; reduce concurrency or provide more memory.
  • GPU out-of-memory error: system RAM is not the immediate fix. Use a smaller model, lower quantization, fewer GPU layers, or a card with more VRAM; only then assess system-memory needs for the offloaded portion.
  • Crashes despite apparently free RAM: the runtime may require contiguous buffers or additional temporary memory. Lower the context, change the split between CPU and GPU, or try a different supported runtime.

Should I buy more RAM or change the model?

Change the model or workload first when your goal is experimentation; buy more RAM when monitoring shows a repeatable capacity limit and the larger workload is worth keeping. Hardware is only one lever.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce context length, limit parallel requests, close memory-heavy programs, or choose a less memory-intensive quantization before upgrading. If those changes undermine the use case—such as requiring long document analysis or several users—more RAM is a rational investment. For a discrete-GPU system, check VRAM independently so a RAM upgrade does not leave the real bottleneck untouched.

When shopping or upgrading, compare the five axes that determine fit: system or unified-memory capacity, dedicated VRAM, model size and quantization, target context and concurrency, and whether the intended runtime supports the hardware. This comparison is more predictive than a single “AI-ready” label.

What is the practical recommendation?

Start with 16GB for general local AI, treat 8GB as a limited option for small models and modest contexts, and move above 16GB when your chosen models, context length, concurrency, or surrounding applications require it. On systems with discrete graphics, select the model against VRAM as well as system RAM. Validate the exact model and runtime with a representative context before assuming a published capacity figure will apply to your setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an SSD or virtual memory replace physical RAM for local AI?

No. The operating system can page data to an SSD when RAM is full, but storage is far slower than RAM and can make token generation stall. Paging may prevent an immediate crash during a short test, yet it is not a practical substitute for enough physical memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the same model use different amounts of memory in different apps?

Runtimes choose different kernels, cache layouts, temporary buffers, and CPU/GPU splits. The quantized file size is therefore only one part of the live footprint; measure the model in the application and settings you will actually use.

How can I check whether macOS or Windows is running out of memory?

On macOS, Activity Monitor’s Memory tab shows memory pressure and swap use. On Windows, Task Manager’s Performance > Memory view shows in-use and committed memory; watch it while loading the model and while extending the context.

Does reducing chat history always improve performance?

It usually lowers context-related memory use, but the runtime may retain caches or allocate fixed buffers based on its configured maximum. If performance does not improve, lower the application’s maximum context or change the model/runtime settings rather than only deleting visible messages.
