Choose cryptocurrency tax software for South Korea by verifying the exact exchange and wallet connections you use, then proving that the imported history is complete and reconciled before trusting any calculation. Koinly lists South Korea as a calculation country and documents an Upbit CSV import. CoinTracking documents a Bithumb CSV workflow. Those capabilities show data ingestion, not approval by the National Tax Service (NTS) or production of an official Korean filing form. Because South Korea’s separate virtual-asset income tax is currently scheduled to apply from January 1, 2027, and treatment of staking, lending, airdrops and hard forks remains unsettled, have a Korean tax professional review the software’s itemized output and assumptions.

What is changing in South Korean cryptocurrency taxation?

The NTS currently says an amendment to the Income Tax Act passed in December 2024 postponed virtual-asset income taxation by two years. Under that guidance, transfers or lending occurring from January 1, 2027 are scheduled to be taxed separately as other income. The taxable amount is described as the consideration received for the transfer or lending, minus the actual acquisition cost and incidental expenses. The covered assets are defined by reference to the Act on the Protection of Virtual Asset Users.

This is a scheduled framework, not a guarantee that every practical filing detail is settled. The NTS also says registered virtual-asset service providers must submit transaction statements and aggregate reports for transactions from January 1, 2027. Separately, information required for corporate-tax purposes has applied to transactions from January 1, 2023. Whether a person is filing individually, operating through a company, or handling both, the software should preserve enough detail for an adviser to trace each figure back to the original record.

A September 17, 2026 report from the National Assembly Budget Office identifies unresolved implementation problems. Acquisition costs and transaction histories can be difficult to reconstruct when assets move among several accounts, and the law does not yet provide clear criteria for returns from staking, lending, hard forks and airdrops. A software category or default label cannot settle those legal questions by itself.

Which cryptocurrency tax software supports South Korean exchanges?

Support means more than a country name on a marketing page. Check the exact exchange, account type and import method currently offered for your account. The documented paths below are useful starting points, but neither establishes an NTS-approved report or a Korean-specific filing form.

Software Documented South Korean exchange path What the documentation establishes What it does not establish
Koinly Upbit transaction history downloaded and imported by file/CSV; South Korea appears in its country list. Country selection for tax calculations, an Upbit file-import route, and guidance to check completeness and transaction tagging. A direct Upbit API, an NTS-approved output, or a Korean statutory filing form.
CoinTracking Bithumb transaction history exported as CSV and uploaded. A Bithumb-specific CSV ingestion workflow. A Korean filing form, NTS approval, or universal API coverage for Korean exchanges.

For any other Korean or overseas exchange, open the vendor’s current integration directory and look for your precise account and data type. An API connection is available only when the exchange has an API supported by the software. A CSV or Excel workflow is different: you download a file and repeat the import whenever new trades or transfers occur.

How should I compare exchange and wallet integrations?

Use the following checks before paying for a plan or generating a report. A broad claim such as “supports Korea” is not enough if your records come from multiple exchanges, self-custody wallets and chains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm every account, not just the main exchange

  • List each Korean exchange, overseas exchange, brokerage-like service, self-custody wallet and on-chain address you used.
  • Record whether each source offers an API, CSV, Excel file, address-based blockchain import or only a manual export.
  • Check whether deposits, withdrawals, trades, fees, conversions, staking receipts and other activity types are included in that source’s export.
  • Verify that the supported integration applies to your account type and jurisdiction; an integration for one exchange product may not cover another.

Distinguish API synchronization from file import

API synchronization can retrieve new activity when the exchange and software maintain a supported connection. A file workflow is under your control but must be repeated for later periods. Keep every original export with its coverage dates, because replacing a file without preserving the earlier version can make it difficult to explain when a transaction first appeared.

Check wallet and chain coverage

Self-custody wallets often spread activity across addresses and networks. Confirm that the software can read each chain you used and can identify transfers between your own accounts rather than treating them as disposals. If a chain, bridge, decentralized-finance protocol or overseas platform is unsupported, plan for a separate export or manual schedule that an adviser can inspect.

Prefer reviewable reports

A useful report exposes itemized transactions, acquisition-cost assignments, fees, transfer matches and unresolved warnings. A single summary number is not enough for professional review. Ask whether you can export the transaction ledger and the assumptions used to classify unusual activity.

Can I import Upbit transactions by CSV?

Yes. Koinly documents downloading Upbit transaction history and importing it by file/CSV. This confirms a documented ingestion route; it does not prove that every Upbit record type is captured, that an API is available, or that the resulting report is an NTS filing form.

Upbit CSV workflow

  1. In Upbit, export the transaction history for the full period you need, retaining the original file and the dates it covers.
  2. In Koinly, choose the Upbit file/CSV import path and upload the export without editing the source file.
  3. Repeat the export and import for later activity when you use a file workflow; a prior CSV import does not automatically acquire newer trades.
  4. Review the imported ledger for missing deposits, withdrawals, trades, fees and duplicate rows.
  5. Match transfers to wallets and other exchanges you control, then investigate transactions left unmatched or assigned no acquisition cost.
  6. Export the itemized results and unresolved warnings for an adviser before relying on any taxable-income figure.

Koinly’s own instructions warn that output reflects errors or omissions in the input and that users should check completeness and transaction tagging. Treat the CSV as evidence to reconcile, not as a finished tax return.

Can I import Bithumb transactions by CSV?

Yes. CoinTracking documents exporting Bithumb transaction history as a CSV file and uploading it. That establishes a Bithumb-specific import workflow, but the cited documentation does not establish NTS approval, a Korean-specific filing form or complete API coverage for Korean exchanges.

Bithumb CSV workflow

  1. Export the complete Bithumb history available for the relevant years and save the untouched file with its date range.
  2. Use CoinTracking’s Bithumb CSV importer and upload the file in the documented format.
  3. Check that buy, sell, deposit, withdrawal and fee fields populated as expected rather than assuming every row mapped correctly.
  4. Import records from your other exchanges and wallets, then reconcile transfers so an internal movement is not counted as a sale.
  5. Inspect missing cost basis, duplicate transactions and unclassified activity before producing a report.

How do I test whether a tax report is complete?

Run a reconciliation before looking at the final tax number. The objective is to show that the software contains the same economic activity as your exchange statements and wallets.

Build a source inventory

Create a simple register naming every account, address, chain and export period. Mark whether the source is an API, CSV, Excel file or manual record. Include closed accounts and old wallets; a current balance cannot reveal transactions that occurred before the balance snapshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reconcile activity and balances

  • Compare imported deposits and withdrawals with the exchange’s own totals for each period.
  • Match a withdrawal from one account to the corresponding deposit in another account you control.
  • Look for duplicate imports, especially where an API and a CSV contain the same trades.
  • Investigate negative balances, impossible acquisition dates, zero-cost assets and transactions with no identified counterparty.
  • Confirm that fees are present and assigned consistently; incidental expenses affect the NTS calculation described in current guidance.

Keep an exceptions log

For every unresolved row, record the transaction date, asset, source, amount, suspected explanation and the treatment you propose. Distinguish a missing record from an uncertain legal classification. This written trail lets a Korean tax professional change one assumption without losing the underlying evidence.

How should wallets, overseas exchanges and DeFi activity be handled?

Wallet coverage is a separate selection criterion from exchange coverage. A product that imports Upbit or Bithumb may still fail to identify activity on your self-custody addresses, another chain or an overseas platform.

Self-custody wallets

Collect address-level histories for every chain and wallet used. Label transfers among your own addresses so the same asset is not treated as a disposal and reacquisition. If the software cannot import a chain, preserve explorer exports or other transaction records and maintain a manual schedule for adviser review.

  • Secure Entry —Data on these flash drives cannot be accessed without the correct alphanumeric password of 8 to 16 characters. A password indication option is available for this flash drive. The hint cannot match the password.

Overseas platforms

Overseas exchanges can use different transaction labels, time zones and fee fields. Import their original files separately, retain the platform’s currency and timestamp conventions, and document any conversion into Korean-won values. The Budget Office specifically notes that histories spread across accounts and overseas platforms make reconstruction difficult.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decentralized finance

DeFi transactions may appear as contract interactions rather than simple buys and sells. Confirm whether the software can decode the chain and protocol; otherwise preserve wallet-level evidence and a human explanation of each event. Do not assume that an automatically generated “income” or “reward” label reflects Korean law.

How are staking, lending, airdrops and hard forks treated?

Do not let a software label decide the legal treatment of non-trade activity. The National Assembly Budget Office’s September 17, 2026 report says criteria remain unclear for returns from staking, lending, hard forks and airdrops.

Use a documented provisional classification

  • Keep the original on-chain or exchange evidence showing when and how the asset was received.
  • Record whether the receipt was automatic, contractual, promotional or the result of a protocol event.
  • Note the market-value method and timestamp used by the software, if any.
  • Flag the entry for professional review instead of silently accepting a default category.

For lending, also retain the loan agreement or platform statement and the dates of principal movement and returns. For staking, preserve validator or platform statements. For airdrops and forks, keep the wallet evidence showing the first time the asset became available. These records do not resolve the law, but they make the unresolved question answerable.

Does cryptocurrency tax software produce a South Korean tax filing form?

The documented Koinly and CoinTracking pages do not establish an NTS-approved Korean filing form or official acceptance by the NTS. Treat their reports as calculation and review outputs unless a current vendor document and your adviser confirm otherwise.

Ask the vendor or adviser four precise questions: Is the output formatted for the taxpayer’s required Korean filing channel? Which figures are calculated under Korean rules rather than a generic capital-gains model? Can the report show acquisition cost and incidental expenses item by item? Can every total be traced to an original exchange or wallet record? A “tax report” label alone does not answer these questions.

What records should I retain?

Keep the original evidence and the report generated from it together. At minimum, retain:

What are the most common selection and reporting mistakes?

Choosing by country list alone

A South Korea setting does not prove that your exchange, wallet or transaction types are supported. Verify the integration at the account level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming CSV means one-time setup

File imports must be repeated as new activity occurs. Keep dated exports so later imports do not overwrite the evidence for an earlier period.

Counting internal transfers as taxable disposals

Without matching withdrawals and deposits across your own accounts, software may interpret a transfer as a sale. Reconcile both sides before accepting the result.

Ignoring fees and acquisition cost

Current NTS guidance describes taxable income as consideration less actual acquisition cost and incidental expenses. Missing fee or cost records can therefore change the calculation.

Treating a clean dashboard as proof

A report can look complete while containing unmatched transactions or default classifications. Review the exception list and itemized ledger, not only the headline total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using software to answer unresolved legal questions

Staking, lending, airdrops and hard forks remain areas where Korean criteria are not clear. Preserve evidence and obtain professional advice for those entries.

Which software-selection checklist should I use?

Before committing to a product, mark each item as confirmed, unsupported or requiring manual work:

  • Every Korean exchange account and overseas platform is covered.
  • Every self-custody wallet and blockchain is covered or has a documented manual process.
  • The import method is identified as API, CSV, Excel, address import or manual entry.
  • All relevant years, deposits, withdrawals, trades and fees can be represented.
  • New CSV activity can be re-imported without creating duplicates.
  • Transfers among accounts you control can be matched and reviewed.
  • Acquisition cost and incidental expenses are visible in the itemized output.
  • Unmatched transactions and ambiguous classifications are clearly flagged.
  • Reports and source files can be exported for a Korean tax professional.
  • No claim of NTS approval is being inferred from a generic “tax report” label.

What is the practical choice for Upbit and Bithumb users?

For an Upbit user, Koinly is the option with a documented South Korea country setting and Upbit CSV path. For a Bithumb user, CoinTracking is the option with a documented Bithumb CSV workflow. If you use both exchanges, self-custody wallets or overseas platforms, choose only after testing the complete multi-source reconciliation; a single exchange import is not enough.

South Korea had 11.13 million domestic virtual-asset exchange user accounts and approximately KRW 5.4 trillion in average daily trading volume in the second half of 2025, according to the National Assembly Budget Office’s 2026 reporting. That scale makes reliable recordkeeping important, but it does not make any particular vendor’s output an official filing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The defensible process is to import every source, reconcile transfers and balances, document assumptions for unusual activity, and have a Korean tax professional review the resulting ledger against the rules in force for the relevant year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use exchange balances instead of transaction histories?

No. A balance is only a snapshot and cannot show acquisition dates, fees, internal transfers or the cost assigned to each disposal. Keep transaction-level exports and wallet records even when the ending balance matches.

How often should I re-import a CSV file?

Re-import whenever the exchange has added activity since the last export, and save each dated source file first. After importing, check for overlap so the same trades are not loaded twice.

What should a tax adviser receive from the software?

Provide the itemized ledger, reconciliation exceptions, source exports, wallet records and your written assumptions. A summary total without traceable source data makes it difficult to verify acquisition cost or unusual receipts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the 2027 rule apply to every cryptocurrency activity in the same way?

The NTS guidance specifically schedules separate taxation for virtual-asset transfers or lending from January 1, 2027. The treatment of staking, airdrops, hard forks and similar returns is not fully clarified, so those activities need individual professional review.
