Caterpie is the safer default when both choices are available. Its evolution is fixed, so every Caterpie reaches Butterfree, a Bug/Flying Pokémon with Compound Eyes and documented access to useful status moves. Wurmple evolves just as quickly, but its level-7 branch is not directly selectable: the same Wurmple can become either the offensive-leaning Beautifly or the more specially defensive Dustox, depending on an underlying personality-related value.

That does not make Wurmple a bad choice. In a Hoenn game where Wurmple is the local early Bug Pokémon, it can be valuable immediately, and either final branch may suit your team better than Butterfree. The right comparison depends on your game version, the first-stage stat trade-off, the final typing and Ability, and whether you want a guaranteed outcome or are happy to accept Wurmple’s split evolution.

Caterpie Predictable planning and early Speed 195 base-stat total; 45 Speed, 30 Attack, 20 Special Defense; fixed Butterfree evolution Oct 2026
Wurmple Players who want a stronger first-stage Attack or either Hoenn branch 195 base-stat total; 20 Speed, 45 Attack, 30 Special Defense; becomes Beautifly or Dustox Oct 2026
Butterfree Reliable utility after the Caterpie line Bug/Flying; Compound Eyes; currently listed 395 base-stat total Oct 2026
Beautifly Offensive special-attack role Bug/Flying; Swarm; currently listed 395 base-stat total Oct 2026
Dustox Extra Special Defense and a Bug/Poison profile Bug/Poison; Shield Dust; currently listed 385 base-stat total Oct 2026

Which is better, Wurmple or Caterpie?

Caterpie is better as a general recommendation because its outcome is predictable and Butterfree combines a documented status-move toolkit with Compound Eyes. You know what the line will become, which makes team planning easier when you are playing a version that offers both species.

Wurmple is the better fit when you are playing a Hoenn title where it is the available early Bug Pokémon, when you prefer its higher first-stage Attack and Special Defense, or when either Beautifly or Dustox fills a role you need. Its uncertainty is not an evolution-speed problem: both lines reach their final stage at the same level milestones. It is a choice between certainty and a branch whose result you cannot select directly.

How do the two evolution lines work?

Both species begin as Bug types, evolve at level 7, and can reach their final forms at level 10. The difference is that Caterpie has one fixed path, while Wurmple has two possible middle and final stages.

Caterpie’s fixed path

Caterpie → Metapod at level 7 → Butterfree at level 10. There is no branch to manage. Every Caterpie follows the same sequence, so you can decide from the start whether Butterfree’s typing and utility belong on your team.

Wurmple’s split path

Wurmple → Silcoon → Beautifly or Wurmple → Cascoon → Dustox. The first evolution occurs at level 7 and the final evolution at level 10, just as with Caterpie. The branch is determined by an underlying personality-related value or encryption constant. To the player, the result is effectively random, but it is more precise to say that the game evaluates a value associated with that Pokémon rather than necessarily rolling a fresh random result at the evolution screen.

There is no supported time-of-day rule or training trick that lets you choose Beautifly or Dustox. Do not plan a route around claims that walking, battling, or evolving at a particular hour guarantees one branch.

What are the important first-stage stat differences?

Caterpie and Wurmple both have 195 total base-stat points. The total is identical, but the distribution favors different jobs.

Species Base-stat total Attack Speed Special Defense What the distribution suggests
Caterpie 195 30 45 20 More likely to move first than Wurmple at the same level, but less physical force and lower Special Defense
Wurmple 195 45 20 30 Higher Attack and Special Defense than Caterpie, but markedly lower Speed

These are species base-stat figures, not the battle stats of one particular Pokémon. A caught Pokémon’s level, individual values, effort investment, nature or equivalent game-specific systems, and temporary effects can change the numbers shown in battle. The useful early distinction is directional: Caterpie is the quicker first-stage option, while Wurmple starts with more Attack and Special Defense.

What the Speed difference means early

Caterpie’s listed 45 Speed gives it a better chance of acting before an otherwise comparable Wurmple. That matters when a low-level battle is decided by landing a move before the opponent can attack, inflict a status condition, or switch. It does not guarantee that Caterpie always moves first; opponent species, levels and battle modifiers still matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Wurmple’s Attack and Special Defense mean

Wurmple’s listed 45 Attack is higher than Caterpie’s 30, and its 30 Special Defense is higher than Caterpie’s 20. Those values can make Wurmple more comfortable taking special hits and using physical attacks during the brief period before its evolutions. They do not by themselves predict which final branch you will receive or prove that Wurmple is stronger overall.

How do Butterfree, Beautifly and Dustox differ?

The final forms have different typings, Abilities and currently listed base-stat totals. Generation-specific data can differ, so treat a current database entry as a version-qualified reference rather than a universal value for every release.

Final Pokémon Typing Ability listed in the comparison data Currently listed base-stat total Generation caveat
Butterfree Bug/Flying Compound Eyes 395 Special Attack is currently listed as 90; the value listed for Generations 2–5 is 80
Beautifly Bug/Flying Swarm 395 Special Attack is currently listed as 100; the value listed for Generations 3–5 is 90
Dustox Bug/Poison Shield Dust 385 Use the stats for the specific generation you are playing

Butterfree: the predictable utility pick

Butterfree’s Bug/Flying typing and Compound Eyes are the main reasons Caterpie is the dependable default. Its listed learnset includes Confusion and Sleep Powder, giving the line both an attacking option and a way to disrupt an opponent. Exact acquisition levels vary by game, so check the move list for your particular release instead of importing a level from another generation.

Compound Eyes improves the accuracy calculation for moves in games that implement the Ability, which is especially relevant when your plan depends on landing a status move. The Ability does not make every move perfect, and it does not erase type matchups or other accuracy rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Beautifly: the offensive Wurmple branch

Beautifly is Bug/Flying, has Swarm, and is currently listed with a 395 base-stat total. Its current listing gives it 100 Special Attack, while the value listed for Generations 3–5 is 90. That historical difference matters if you are comparing an original Hoenn release with a later game.

The Pokémon Company describes Swarm as: “Powers up Bug-type moves when the Pokémon’s HP is low.” This is a conditional boost, not evidence that Beautifly is universally stronger than Butterfree. It rewards a low-health situation and still leaves the result dependent on the game’s generation, move availability and matchup.

Dustox: the defensive-leaning Wurmple branch

Dustox is Bug/Poison, has ordinary Shield Dust, and is currently listed with a 385 base-stat total. Its typing and the branch’s emphasis on Special Defense make it the more defensive-looking Wurmple outcome in this comparison. Shield Dust prevents additional effects from moves that hit the Pokémon in games where the Ability functions that way; it does not reduce the move’s base damage.

Dustox is therefore not simply a weaker Beautifly. It is a different role with a different typing and a lower currently listed total, and its value depends on what your party lacks and which version’s mechanics apply.

Where are Caterpie and Wurmple available?

Availability is version-specific and can decide the question before stats do. Caterpie is associated with Kanto games, while Wurmple is associated with Hoenn games, including early Hoenn routes. The comparison does not establish that both species can be caught on the same early route or even in the same release.

Before choosing, identify the exact game, remake or regional version. Then check that game’s encounter tables for the route you have reached. A recommendation based on a species that is not obtainable in your edition is not useful, and encounter locations can change between an original release, a remake and a later regional Pokédex.

A practical availability check

  1. Name the release. Record the exact game and, if relevant, whether it is an original or remake.
  2. Check the regional encounter list. Confirm that Caterpie or Wurmple appears before the next major story segment you care about.
  3. Check version-specific mechanics. Confirm the Ability, move levels and base-stat values for that generation.
  4. Choose the role, not the name. If only one line is available early, compare it with the rest of your current team rather than with an unavailable ideal.

Which line fits different team plans?

Use the following decision points when both species are legal options in the same ruleset or when you are comparing them for a planned team.

  • Choose Caterpie when predictability matters. The fixed Metapod-to-Butterfree path removes the need to plan around an unknown branch.
  • Choose Caterpie when early Speed and status utility matter. Its higher first-stage Speed and Butterfree’s documented Compound Eyes, Confusion and Sleep Powder access support a disruption-oriented plan.
  • Choose Wurmple when you value its first-stage stat trade. Its higher Attack and Special Defense can be useful before level 10, even though its Speed is lower.
  • Choose Wurmple when you are happy with either final branch. If both Beautifly and Dustox would be acceptable, the uncertainty is less costly.
  • Choose the locally available line in a story playthrough. A Pokémon you can catch and train now is usually more practical than a theoretically better species from another version.
  • Do not choose solely by base-stat total. The two first stages have the same total, and the final forms differ in typing, Ability and generation-adjusted values.

Can you choose whether Wurmple becomes Beautifly or Dustox?

Not directly. Wurmple’s branch is tied to an underlying personality-related value or encryption constant, so the game does not present a normal choice between Silcoon and Cascoon or between Beautifly and Dustox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most accurate player-facing description is “effectively random.” That wording communicates the practical limitation without claiming that every evolution creates a new random roll. A time-of-day schedule, a particular training routine or a prescribed level-up location should not be treated as a reliable selection method.

If the branch matters to a planned team, decide before investing heavily: either accept both outcomes, use the species available in your version, or choose Caterpie when the fixed Butterfree result is more important than Wurmple’s early stat distribution.

Are moves and Abilities enough to make Butterfree better than Beautifly?

No single move or Ability settles the comparison for every game. Butterfree’s advantage is the combination of a guaranteed final form, Compound Eyes and a documented learnset that includes Confusion and Sleep Powder. Beautifly’s case is its Bug/Flying typing, Swarm and current Special Attack listing, with generation-specific values that can be lower in older games.

Move levels and available tutors or technical moves vary by release. A move shown for one version should not be treated as automatically available at the same level in another. Compare the actual learnsets for the game you are playing, then consider whether your party needs status control, immediate damage, a second Flying type or coverage against a particular opponent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What mistakes should you avoid when comparing them?

  • Assuming both appear on the same route. Their regional associations differ, and the available data does not establish a universal shared encounter.
  • Calling Wurmple’s branch a player-selected choice. The underlying value determines the outcome without a normal prompt.
  • Using one generation’s Special Attack for every game. Butterfree’s current listing is 90 versus 80 in Generations 2–5; Beautifly’s current listing is 100 versus 90 in Generations 3–5.
  • Confusing base stats with battle stats. Species totals are not the same as the numbers on one caught Pokémon.
  • Reading a TCG card as a video-game ranking. Card HP, attacks and set placement describe a trading card, not the role or strength of the species in a Pokémon game.
  • Assuming the higher total wins. Butterfree and Beautifly currently share a listed 395 total, while Dustox is listed at 385, but typing, Ability, move access and generation rules can matter more than a total.

How should you make the final choice in your game?

  1. Confirm availability. If only one species is obtainable before your target badge or story event, use that fact as the first filter.
  2. Write down your team’s missing role. Decide whether you need Speed, a physical early attacker, Special Defense, status utility or a particular typing.
  3. Check the generation-specific data. Verify the final form’s stats, Ability behavior and move levels for the exact release.
  4. Evaluate the evolution risk. Caterpie has no branch; Wurmple is appropriate only if both possible outcomes are acceptable or you are willing to adapt.
  5. Reassess after the first major team additions. Early Bug Pokémon are often temporary members, so do not overvalue a small base-stat difference if another teammate already covers the same role.

Does the trading card game change the answer?

No. A trading card and a video-game species share artwork and names but use different rules. The official card database identifies a Wurmple Lost Origin 6/196 card and a Caterpie Sun & Moon 1/149 card; those records establish card identities, not which Pokémon is more useful in a game party.

Card HP, attacks, rarity and set number should therefore be kept separate from the game comparison. If you collect, search by the exact set and card number; if you are building a video-game team, use the edition-specific encounter, stat, Ability and learnset data instead.

How we picked the recommendation

The ranking uses five criteria: whether the evolution outcome is predictable, the first-stage stat distribution, the final typing, documented Ability and move utility, and availability in the player’s specific game. It treats the base-stat figures as game data, keeps historical-generation values separate from current listings, and does not use player surveys, win-rate claims or trading-card characteristics as evidence of video-game strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Caterpie and Wurmple have the same total base stats?

Yes. Both first stages are listed at 195 total base-stat points, but those points are allocated differently. Caterpie’s advantage is Speed, while Wurmple has more Attack and Special Defense, so the totals alone do not describe how they play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a trading card’s HP show whether Butterfree or Beautifly is stronger in the games?

No. Trading-card HP and attacks belong to a separate rules system and cannot be converted into video-game stats. Use the game’s generation-specific data when making a party decision.

Why do some stat guides show a different Special Attack for Butterfree or Beautifly?

The species’ stats were changed across generations. Current listings show Butterfree at 90 and Beautifly at 100 Special Attack, while the cited older-generation listings show 80 for Butterfree in Generations 2–5 and 90 for Beautifly in Generations 3–5.

Is Wurmple’s evolution actually random every time it levels up?

The player experiences the result as effectively random, but the branch is tied to an underlying personality-related value or encryption constant. That is why a normal evolution prompt does not let you select Beautifly or Dustox.
