Choose a QLC SSD when you want high capacity for data you will mostly read and rarely rewrite. Choose TLC as the safer starting point for frequent or sustained writes, write-sensitive latency, or a larger endurance budget. NAND type is only one part of the decision: compare the exact drives’ endurance ratings, sustained-write behavior, warranty, capacity, interface, form factor, and price.

What is the difference between QLC and TLC?

TLC stores three bits in each flash cell; QLC stores four. The extra bit gives QLC higher cell density, which can help manufacturers build capacity-oriented drives. Micron describes QLC as an attractive option for read-centric applications because it offers greater density in a smaller footprint. Micron’s NAND technology page explains the distinction.

KIOXIA describes QLC cell density as 33% higher than TLC in its 2026 comparison. That is a cell-density figure, not a guarantee of 33% more usable capacity in every SSD. Greater density also comes with tradeoffs: manufacturers describe QLC as more sensitive to cell degradation and slower to program. What you experience depends on the complete drive design and workload, not just the NAND label.

Which type fits your workload?

Choose QLC for read-heavy capacity

QLC is a strong candidate for a large media library, archive, backup target, or other collection that is written and then read far more often than it is changed. It is not limited to cold storage: manufacturer guidance also identifies some mixed or enterprise workloads as possible fits when write latency is not critical.

Lean toward TLC for frequent writes

TLC is generally the safer starting point for workloads that repeatedly update data, sustain heavy writes, or depend on responsive and consistent write behavior. This is a tendency rather than a rule that every TLC SSD outperforms every QLC SSD. The exact model’s design and specifications matter.

Gaming and everyday use

For a gaming or everyday-use PC, decide based on the drive’s actual price, capacity, endurance rating, and performance specifications—not cell type alone. If the drive will mostly serve installed games, applications, and files that are read after installation, QLC may be suitable. If your use includes frequent large transfers, ongoing content creation, or other sustained writes, give TLC and the specific drive’s write behavior closer attention.

How to compare two specific SSDs

  1. Estimate your writes. Consider how much data you write and how often you overwrite it. Mostly reading data after it is stored favors QLC; frequent or sustained writes lean toward TLC.
  2. Check write performance beyond peak figures. If write response or consistency matters, examine the exact model’s specifications and independent testing where available. Peak sequential speeds alone do not show how a drive behaves during sustained writes.
  3. Compare endurance at the capacity you plan to buy. Look for TBW (terabytes written) or DWPD (drive writes per day) and check the warranty. TBW is a drive rating for the amount of data written; it is not a prediction of exactly when a drive will fail. Compare the rating with your expected writes over the period you intend to use the drive.
  4. Compare cost at the same capacity and in the same market. Calculate the price per usable terabyte for the models and region you are considering. QLC’s density can make large-capacity storage attractive, but there is no universal consumer price premium for TLC established here; actual prices vary by model and market.
  5. Confirm fit and platform requirements. Check interface, form factor, supported capacity, cooling conditions, warranty, and the full datasheet. NAND type does not tell you whether a drive is compatible with your computer.

How much endurance do you need?

Use the rating for the exact model and capacity rather than assuming a cell type determines endurance. For example, Kingston lists these ratings for its M.2 2280 industrial QLC PCIe NVMe family: 512GB at 160TBW, 1TB at 320TBW, and 2TB at 640TBW. Kingston lists a limited three-year warranty for that family. These are product-specific figures, not typical ratings for all QLC drives.

If your expected writes are comfortably within a candidate’s rated budget over your planned service life, its endurance rating may be adequate for your needs. If your workload is write-heavy or the rating leaves little margin, compare higher-rated alternatives, including TLC models. A TLC label alone does not guarantee a higher TBW rating than a particular QLC drive.

Should you pay extra for TLC?

Compare actual models at the same capacity, in your region, at the time you plan to buy. Pay more for a TLC drive only if its specifications or tested behavior give you a meaningful benefit for your workload, such as a better endurance rating or more suitable sustained-write performance. If your data is mostly read after it is stored, a QLC model that meets your capacity, endurance, warranty, and performance needs may be the better fit. Do not assume TLC always costs a fixed amount or percentage more.
