Choose a MacBook if you want macOS, tight iPhone integration, quiet and efficient portability, or Apple-platform development. Choose a Windows laptop if you need Windows-only software, broad PC-game compatibility, touch or pen input, a 2-in-1 design, a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU, or more hardware and price choices.
Neither platform is universally better. The safest purchase is the one that creates the fewest compromises for your most important applications, games, peripherals, and future workload. A MacBook Air and a premium Windows ultraportable are sensible comparisons; a MacBook Air and a Windows gaming laptop are not, even if their prices are similar.
This guide reflects the United States laptop market and platform status as of August 10, 2026. Prices, configurations, operating-system support, and model availability can change, so verify the exact configuration before ordering.

MacBook and Windows laptop are product categories, not single products
Apple sells a relatively small notebook lineup. As of the date above, Apple’s current families include the MacBook Neo with A18 Pro, 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air models with M5, and 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5, M5 Pro, or M5 Max.
Windows is an operating system used in budget laptops, premium ultraportables, business systems, gaming laptops, creator machines, mobile workstations, 2-in-1s, rugged computers, and AI PCs. Microsoft’s shopping categories reflect that range. A comparison is meaningful only when the hardware classes match:
- Compare a MacBook Air with a premium Windows ultraportable.
- Compare a MacBook Pro with a premium creator laptop or mobile workstation.
- Compare a MacBook Neo with genuinely comparable budget Windows laptops, not a $300 machine with half the memory and storage.
- Compare a MacBook with a Windows gaming laptop only when gaming is part of the requirement.
This distinction explains why claims such as Windows laptops are cheaper, MacBooks are faster, or MacBooks have longer battery life are too broad to be useful without naming the model class and workload.
macOS versus Windows: the practical differences
Why macOS may fit better
- Apple-device integration: macOS works with iPhone and iPad features such as AirDrop, Handoff, Universal Clipboard, Continuity Camera, iPhone Mirroring, Sidecar, calls, messaging, and Instant Hotspot. Apple lists the relevant requirements on its Continuity support page.
- Apple-platform development: Xcode is the standard Mac workflow for developing and signing applications for Apple platforms. Apple’s Xcode requirements state that it requires a Mac running a supported macOS version.
- Consistent hardware and software integration: Apple controls the notebook designs, chips, operating system, display behavior, trackpad, and drivers as one product family.
- Unix-based command line: macOS provides a Unix-oriented environment that suits many developers and technical users without first creating a Linux virtual machine or compatibility layer.
- Simple product selection: There are fewer MacBook families and configurations to filter than Windows models, which can make the buying decision easier.
These are workflow advantages, not proof that macOS is easier for every person. A Windows user whose school, employer, or favorite tools are Windows-first may be less productive after switching.
Why Windows may fit better
- Software compatibility: Windows remains the safer choice for many engineering, architecture, manufacturing, laboratory, government, accounting, education, and enterprise applications.
- Hardware variety: You can choose among many screen sizes, processors, GPUs, port layouts, keyboards, chassis designs, price levels, and warranty programs.
- Gaming: Windows supports the broadest selection of PC games, launchers, graphics drivers, anti-cheat systems, controllers, and discrete GPUs.
- Input and form factors: Windows offers far more touchscreen, stylus, convertible, detachable, rugged, cellular, and high-refresh-rate options.
- Enterprise compatibility: Organizations standardized on Microsoft management, identity, security, and line-of-business tools may find Windows simpler to deploy and support.
- Linux and virtualization options: Windows Subsystem for Linux, virtual machines, and a broad developer-tool ecosystem can support Linux-oriented development while retaining native Windows applications.
What neither platform automatically wins
Microsoft 365 is available on Mac. Microsoft provides Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and OneDrive for macOS through its Office for Mac documentation. However, Office feature parity is not complete: Microsoft’s Office FAQ identifies Access and Publisher as Windows-only in the listed Office versions, and individual macros, add-ins, and enterprise features may differ.

Use this as a starting point, then verify the exact version, plug-ins, drivers, and licensing terms.
| Compatibility group | Examples | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| Usually available natively on both | Web browsers, Microsoft 365 core applications, Zoom, common video-conferencing tools, Adobe Creative Cloud applications, Slack, Teams, Discord, popular programming languages, and mainstream code editors. | Either platform can work. Check application-specific requirements, plug-ins, file formats, and hardware acceleration. |
| Mac-specific or Mac-preferred | Xcode, Apple SDKs, and development for iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, or macOS. Some audio and creative workflows also have strong macOS preferences. | Choose a MacBook when the software is required, not merely preferred. |
| Windows-specific or Windows-preferred | Microsoft Access and Publisher, many school and engineering applications, Windows-only plug-ins and drivers, DirectX software, CUDA-dependent workflows, and kernel-level utilities. | Choose a native x86 Windows laptop when compatibility is central. |
| Compatibility layer or virtual machine | Windows x86/x64 applications on Windows ARM, Windows 11 ARM in Parallels on Apple silicon, Linux through WSL or a virtual machine, and Windows through a cloud PC. | Launching is not the same as full support. Test graphics acceleration, drivers, peripherals, anti-cheat, plug-ins, and performance. |
Windows on ARM deserves its own decision
Windows ARM laptops, particularly Copilot+ PCs, can offer excellent efficiency and battery life. Microsoft says Windows 11 on ARM runs native ARM applications and many unmodified x86 and x64 applications through emulation. Native ARM applications generally provide the best performance and efficiency. Microsoft’s Windows on ARM overview explains the current model.
Microsoft’s Prism emulator in Windows 11 24H2 and later expands x86 application support and some instruction-set extensions. That is meaningful progress, but it does not make every Windows application equivalent to running on an Intel or AMD x86 laptop. Compatibility can still depend on the application, driver, plug-in, anti-cheat system, peripheral, and virtualization requirements. Microsoft also maintains compatibility guidance through the same Windows on ARM documentation, while its Prism update announcement describes the emulator’s improvements.

Prefer Intel or AMD x86 Windows when you depend on:
- Older accounting, scientific, or school software
- Specialized printers, scanners, laboratory instruments, or security devices
- Older VPN, antivirus, or security software with kernel-level drivers
- Audio interfaces or plug-ins without confirmed ARM support
- Games with incompatible anti-cheat systems
- Virtual machines requiring nested virtualization
- An employer or school that has not certified ARM devices
Do not buy a Windows ARM laptop merely because its battery claims look impressive. Confirm that your most important applications and peripherals are supported first.
Can you run Windows on a MacBook?
Apple silicon Macs do not provide the old Intel-era experience of installing Windows directly through Boot Camp. Microsoft documents two supported approaches for using Windows 11 with Apple silicon Macs:
Rank #2
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- Windows 11 ARM in Parallels Desktop. This is useful for occasional Windows applications, but it adds virtualization overhead and ARM compatibility considerations.
- Windows 365 cloud PCs. Windows runs remotely, so the experience depends on an internet connection, latency, subscription cost, and the organization’s configuration.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 on Apple silicon guidance warns about limitations involving hardware, games, applications, and DirectX. It also states that a separate Windows license is required for each Windows 11 Pro instance in the applicable setup.
Virtualized Windows is a useful escape hatch for an occasional utility, browser-only business portal, or application that does not need specialized hardware. It is not a safe substitute for a native Windows PC when your primary workload is competitive gaming, CAD, engineering, device-specific work, GPU-intensive Windows software, or anything your school or employer officially supports only on Windows.
Gaming: start with Windows
If gaming is a primary requirement, choose Windows first and select the GPU and processor around the games you actually play. Match the game’s required operating system, graphics hardware, VRAM, launcher, anti-cheat system, controller support, and display requirements.
Some modern games, indie titles, older games, browser games, emulators, and cloud-gaming services work on a Mac. That does not make a MacBook the safe choice for a particular Windows game. Game support can vary by title, launcher, anti-cheat technology, graphics API, and Apple silicon compatibility.
Windows ARM adds another qualification. A game that runs on x86 Windows may not work correctly on ARM because of anti-cheat, launchers, drivers, or graphics behavior. If a game matters, check the exact laptop architecture and the publisher’s current support information.
Windows 11 includes features such as Auto HDR and optimizations for windowed games, but these do not replace a capable GPU or guarantee support for an individual title.
Also distinguish a gaming laptop’s strengths from its compromises. A Windows laptop with a powerful NVIDIA GPU can be much faster for games and GPU workloads than a thin MacBook, but it may be heavier, louder, less portable, and less efficient away from its charger. A thin Windows ultraportable is a different product from a gaming laptop.
Battery life, performance, and thermals
There is no platform-wide winner. The exact chip, cooling system, battery capacity, display, GPU, operating system, and workload matter more than the logo.
- MacBook Air: Apple’s current M5 Air is fanless and designed around an efficient system-on-chip. It is attractive for portable general work, but sustained heavy workloads can behave differently from short burst workloads.
- MacBook Pro: Pro models add active cooling, higher-power M5 variants, more memory options, better displays, and more ports for sustained professional work.
- Windows ultraportables: Efficient Intel, AMD, and ARM systems can provide strong battery life, but results vary substantially by model.
- Windows performance laptops: Discrete GPUs can deliver substantially more graphics performance while increasing power use, heat, fan noise, weight, and charger size.
Apple rates the M5 MacBook Air for up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use. Those are Apple test claims, not a guarantee for your browser tabs, brightness, video calls, development tools, or games. Manufacturer battery tests also use different methods, so compare independent testing of the exact configuration when battery life is important. Independent Windows laptop testing shows that some current Windows models can approach MacBook endurance, but the outcome depends heavily on the model and processor; Tom’s Guide’s Windows laptop testing illustrates that model-by-model variation.
Display, keyboard, touch, and form factor
Favor Windows when you need a touchscreen, active stylus, 360-degree hinge, detachable keyboard, gaming refresh rate, OLED or mini-LED at a particular price, a 17- or 18-inch display, rugged hardware, built-in cellular connectivity, or a niche keyboard and pointing-device layout.
Favor a MacBook when you want a conventional clamshell laptop with Apple’s trackpad and gesture ecosystem, a high-quality built-in display, strong speakers and microphones in a thin design, and no need for touch or tablet functionality. Do not say every MacBook display is better than every Windows display: premium Windows laptops can offer OLED, mini-LED, high refresh rates, touch, and pen support that MacBooks do not.
Ports and external displays can decide the purchase

MacBook Air M5
Apple lists MagSafe 3, two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and support for up to two external displays under stated resolution and configuration limits. See the MacBook Air specifications before assuming that a particular monitor arrangement will work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMacBook Neo
Apple lists one USB 3 USB-C port rated up to 10Gbps, one USB 2 USB-C port rated up to 480Mbps, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and support for one external display up to 4K at 60Hz. The slower USB 2 port is especially important if you plan to attach fast storage or a dock. See the MacBook Neo specifications.
MacBook Pro M5 Pro and M5 Max
Apple lists an SDXC card slot, HDMI, MagSafe 3, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and three Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports. External-display support varies by chip and configuration. The 14-inch MacBook Pro specifications and 16-inch MacBook Pro specifications provide the exact limits.
Windows laptops may provide HDMI, USB-A, Ethernet, SD, or more display outputs without a hub, but this is entirely model-specific. Never infer a Windows laptop’s ports from its brand or processor family.
Which current MacBook class should you buy?
| MacBook family | Best suited to | Key facts and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Neo | Light schoolwork, web use, documents, streaming, and buyers who specifically want a lower-cost MacBook. | A18 Pro, 8GB unified memory, 256GB or 512GB SSD, 13-inch 500-nit display, up to 16 hours of Apple-rated video streaming, two USB-C ports with different speeds, and one external display. The fixed 8GB memory and limited expansion make it a poor default for demanding or long-lived professional use. |
| 13-inch MacBook Air M5 | Most portable general-purpose MacBook use, school, office work, programming, and moderate creative work. | Starts in Apple’s published specifications at 16GB unified memory and 512GB SSD. It has two Thunderbolt 4 ports and supports up to two external displays under Apple’s conditions. It is fanless. |
| 15-inch MacBook Air M5 | People who want a larger workspace without moving to a MacBook Pro. | 15.3-inch display, M5, up to 18 hours of Apple-rated video streaming, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. It remains an Air, so compare sustained performance, ports, and display requirements with the Pro. |
| 14-inch MacBook Pro | Sustained development, video, audio, photography, and other professional work requiring a better display, active cooling, memory, or ports. | Available with M5, M5 Pro, or M5 Max. It adds a Liquid Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, HDMI, SDXC, MagSafe, and three Thunderbolt 5 ports. |
| 16-inch MacBook Pro | High-end professional work and buyers who want the largest MacBook display. | Uses M5 Pro or M5 Max, has a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, and can support up to four external displays with M5 Max under Apple’s stated conditions. |
Apple launched the M5 MacBook Air in the United States at $1,099 for the 13-inch model and $1,299 for the 15-inch model. Those were launch prices, not a permanent market price. Apple’s indexed store pages have also recently shown conflicting starting prices for the MacBook Neo—$599 on its dedicated buy page and $699 on the general Mac buying page—so check the live Neo checkout page and general Mac store rather than relying on a static article price.

Choose the class before choosing a manufacturer:
- Budget general-purpose laptop: suitable for browser work, documents, streaming, and basic schoolwork. Inspect the display, webcam, keyboard, memory, storage, and build quality; the lowest price often means significant compromises.
- Premium ultraportable: the closest Windows comparison to a MacBook Air. Look for 16GB or more memory, a 512GB SSD, strong battery testing, a good display, and a comfortable keyboard.
- 2-in-1 or detachable: the right choice for touch, pen input, note-taking, presentation, and tablet mode.
- Gaming laptop: choose it when games or GPU work matter. Compare the exact GPU, VRAM, cooling, screen, battery, noise, weight, and charger.
- Creator laptop: useful for video, 3D, photography, and other workloads that benefit from a discrete GPU or a particular screen. Verify application and codec support.
- Business laptop: often the best fit for enterprise management, docking, serviceability, warranty, and security features. Check the organization’s approved models.
- Mobile workstation: appropriate for certified CAD, engineering, simulation, scientific, or professional applications. Certification and GPU support can matter more than consumer benchmark scores.
- Copilot+ PC: a subset of Windows laptops with an NPU capable of at least 40 TOPS, at least 16GB RAM, and at least 256GB storage under Microsoft’s published requirements. Not every Windows laptop is a Copilot+ PC, and the AI label does not guarantee compatibility with your existing software.
- Windows ARM laptop: choose it for confirmed application compatibility and efficiency, not simply because it is a newer AI PC. Use an Intel or AMD x86 model when legacy software, drivers, games, or peripherals are central.
How much memory and storage should you buy?
Operating-system minimums are not sensible buying recommendations. Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation minimums are 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, along with a compatible 64-bit processor, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics, and a suitable display. Those figures describe installation eligibility, not a comfortable laptop for several years. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.
Practical memory guidance
- 16GB: the sensible baseline for a new general-purpose laptop, including school, office, browser, and communication work.
- 24GB or 32GB: preferable for development, large spreadsheets, photography, video editing, local AI tools, virtual machines, and heavy multitasking.
- 64GB or more: appropriate for serious professional media production, large virtual machines, simulation, or workstation workloads.
- 8GB: acceptable only for genuinely light use and a constrained budget. It is a significant compromise for a laptop intended to last several years.
On a MacBook, memory is unified memory and is selected at purchase rather than treated as ordinary user-upgradeable RAM. The published MacBook Neo configurations use 8GB, while current MacBook Air configurations start at 16GB. On Windows, some business laptops have replaceable memory and some thin laptops solder it. Check the exact SKU and service manual instead of assuming either platform is upgradeable.
Practical storage guidance
- 512GB SSD: a practical minimum for most new buyers.
- 1TB SSD: preferable for games, photo and video libraries, development environments, virtual machines, or large local files.
- 256GB SSD: suitable mainly for light, cloud-first use or a tightly constrained budget.
Applications, operating-system files, game installations, developer toolchains, virtual machines, photo libraries, and video caches can consume a small SSD quickly. External storage helps, but it is less convenient for a travel laptop and may require a hub.
Repairability, upgrades, and long-term ownership
Avoid the simplistic claim that Windows laptops are repairable and MacBooks are not. Repairability is determined by the exact chassis.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- For current MacBook Air and Neo buying decisions, treat memory and storage as fixed after purchase.
- Some MacBook parts, including ports and batteries on certain models, may be serviceable, but repair difficulty varies by model.
- iFixit gave the MacBook Neo a 6/10 repairability score and described it as unusually repairable for a recent MacBook, while still identifying soldered memory and storage as limitations. Read its MacBook Neo repairability analysis.
- Some Windows business laptops provide accessible memory, SSDs, batteries, keyboards, and other serviceable parts. Lenovo, for example, highlights serviceable components in parts of its 2026 ThinkPad portfolio. That does not describe every ThinkPad or Windows laptop.
- Many Windows ultraportables solder memory and use tightly integrated components just like thin MacBooks.
Before buying, check the battery replacement cost, parts availability, local repair options, service manual, warranty terms, and whether the desired memory and storage configuration is available from the factory. Apple’s standard U.S. Mac hardware warranty is one year for defects in materials and workmanship; review the current warranty terms and any optional coverage before purchase.
Operating-system support and useful life
Do not promise that one platform will last a fixed number of years. Useful life depends on operating-system compatibility, battery health, storage capacity, repair cost, application support, and performance as well as updates.
Apple publishes a compatibility list for each macOS release. macOS Tahoe 26 compatibility includes current Apple silicon MacBooks and some older Intel models, but Apple does not promise an identical support duration for every Mac. Use the current compatibility list when evaluating a particular used or discounted Mac.

Windows 11 support is version-specific. Microsoft lists 24 months of support for Home and Pro feature releases in its Windows 11 lifecycle documentation. Microsoft’s current release information lists Windows 11 version 26H1 as a 2026 release for new devices, with Home and Pro support through March 14, 2028. Microsoft says 26H1 is not designed as an in-place feature update for existing 24H2 or 25H2 devices, so do not assume that every current Windows laptop receives it in the same way. Check the exact model’s supported Windows releases.

Windows 11 Home and Pro also require internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during initial setup for personal-use configurations under Microsoft’s published specifications. This may matter if you are buying a school or employer-managed computer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security and sign-in
Both platforms provide modern hardware-backed security features, but implementation varies by model and organization. Neither operating system is immune to malware, unsafe downloads, account theft, or poor backup practices.
Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and supports Secure Boot. Windows Hello can provide PIN, fingerprint, or face sign-in when the laptop includes the required hardware. A MacBook Air includes Touch ID. A Windows laptop may include a fingerprint reader, an infrared camera, or only PIN sign-in depending on its configuration. See Microsoft’s Windows Hello guidance and Apple’s MacBook Air specifications.
For either platform, enable automatic updates, use a strong account password and multifactor authentication, encrypt the device when available, keep recovery information current, and maintain backups. In a workplace or school, the organization’s management, identity, VPN, and security policies matter more than general platform reputation.
iPhone, Android, and mixed-device ecosystems
When an iPhone makes a MacBook more attractive
Apple’s Continuity features can remove small but repeated points of friction: sharing files with AirDrop, copying text between devices with Universal Clipboard, answering calls, forwarding messages, using an iPhone as a webcam through Continuity Camera, mirroring the iPhone, using an iPad as a second display with Sidecar, and connecting through Instant Hotspot. These benefits are strongest when you actively use Apple devices rather than merely owning an iPhone.
An iPhone owner who mostly uses browser services and never uses AirDrop, Handoff, iMessage, or iPhone Mirroring may not gain enough from the ecosystem to outweigh a Windows laptop’s better compatibility with a required application.
When Windows makes sense with Android or mixed devices
Microsoft’s Phone Link supports combinations of calls, messages, notifications, files, and other mobile experiences, with availability depending on the phone and Windows configuration. Windows also offers mobile-device integration with iPhone, but its feature set is not identical to Apple’s first-party integration. Check Microsoft’s supported Phone Link experiences for the exact handset.

- Check official support. Look for the exact current application version, laptop architecture, driver, GPU, and peripheral requirements. Ask the school or employer before buying.
- Classify your dominant workload. Decide whether you are mainly browsing and writing, programming, editing media, gaming, running virtual machines, using CAD, working with local AI, or traveling.
- Select the operating system. Choose MacBook for a decisive macOS or Apple-ecosystem advantage. Choose Windows for Windows-only software, gaming, touch, pen, discrete GPU, or a required hardware configuration. Choose either when the workload is genuinely platform-neutral.
- Select the hardware class. Compare an Air with an ultraportable, a Pro with a creator laptop or workstation, and a gaming PC with another gaming PC.
- Set the specification before comparing deals. Use 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD as a practical baseline; move to 24GB or 32GB and 1TB for heavier work.
- Check ports, displays, weight, charger, keyboard, webcam, and battery tests. These details determine daily satisfaction more than a processor name.
- Check service and warranty. Confirm repair options, battery replacement, parts, support policy, and whether the configuration can be upgraded.
Common purchase failures and how to avoid them
Buying a Mac for a Windows-only course
Ask whether the school offers a remote Windows lab, a browser version, or an officially supported virtual machine. If the application requires DirectX, GPU acceleration, proprietary drivers, or anti-cheat, choose Windows instead of hoping that virtualization will be sufficient.
Buying Windows ARM for legacy software
Confirm native ARM support or test the program under emulation. Check every driver, plug-in, VPN client, printer utility, and security tool. If compatibility is central and uncertain, choose an Intel or AMD x86 Windows laptop.

Assuming Parallels makes a Mac equal to a Windows gaming PC
Test the exact title or application and check DirectX, controller support, anti-cheat, GPU acceleration, USB devices, and nested virtualization. Use a native Windows computer or cloud PC when the workload is critical.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Buying a MacBook Neo for demanding work
The Neo’s published 8GB memory, 256GB or 512GB storage, limited ports, and one-external-display limit make it a budget and light-use product rather than an obvious substitute for a MacBook Air or Pro.
Buying a MacBook Air for sustained professional rendering
Compare the Air with a MacBook Pro or Windows workstation. Check whether the software benefits from a discrete GPU, read sustained-workload testing, and budget for memory and storage because you cannot treat them as later user upgrades.
Buying a gaming Windows laptop for all-day travel
Check measured battery life away from the charger, weight, charger size, fan noise, webcam, keyboard, and sleep behavior. A thin Windows ultraportable plus a desktop or cloud-gaming setup may be a better combination.
Choosing by CPU model alone
A processor name does not reveal the laptop’s sustained power limit, cooling, GPU, VRAM, memory amount, SSD, display, battery size, fan noise, or application compatibility. Compare the complete configuration.

Confirm the number and resolution of displays supported by the exact Mac or Windows laptop, and do not underestimate how quickly games, photos, video caches, developer tools, and virtual machines fill a 256GB SSD.
When neither a MacBook nor a Windows laptop is ideal
- Chromebook: a strong option for browser-first schoolwork, low maintenance, and a constrained budget.
- Linux laptop: useful for open-source development, customization, or extending the life of older hardware.
- Desktop plus inexpensive laptop: a practical combination when you need serious gaming or workstation power at home but portability while traveling.
- Tablet plus keyboard: suitable for reading, note-taking, media, and light work.
- Refurbished MacBook or Windows business laptop: can provide better build quality per dollar when battery condition, warranty, and parts availability are acceptable.
- Cloud PC: useful for occasional Windows access from a Mac or another device, provided your internet connection and subscription cost are acceptable.
- School- or employer-provided computer: often the safest option because required applications, security tools, and support have already been tested.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a MacBook or Windows laptop better for college?
Either can be excellent for general coursework. Choose a MacBook if the student needs macOS, Xcode, or Apple-device integration and the school does not require Windows software. Choose Windows if the course uses Access, engineering or CAD software, specialized testing tools, games, touch or pen input, or a required Windows-only driver. Ask the school’s IT department before buying.
Can I use Microsoft Office on a MacBook?
Yes. Microsoft provides Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and OneDrive for Mac. However, Microsoft identifies Access and Publisher as Windows-only in the cited Office versions, and macros, add-ins, and enterprise features can differ. Verify the exact Office application and workflow.
Is a Windows ARM laptop safe to buy?
It can be a good choice when your applications and peripherals have confirmed ARM support or work reliably through emulation. Choose Intel or AMD x86 Windows instead when you depend on legacy software, specialized drivers, older VPN or security tools, anti-cheat games, audio plug-ins, or uncertified school and business software.
Can an Apple silicon MacBook replace a Windows PC?
For occasional Windows applications, Windows 11 ARM in Parallels or a Windows 365 cloud PC can work. It is not a universal replacement for a native Windows computer for gaming, CAD, engineering, device-specific work, or GPU-intensive Windows applications. Check DirectX, drivers, peripherals, plug-ins, and licensing first.
Is 8GB RAM enough for a new laptop?
It is suitable mainly for genuinely light use and a constrained budget. For most new laptops intended to last several years, 16GB is the practical baseline. Choose 24GB or 32GB for development, virtual machines, large spreadsheets, photo and video work, local AI tools, or heavy multitasking.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line
Buy the platform your most important application officially supports. That usually means MacBook for macOS, Apple Continuity, Apple-platform development, and efficient portable work; Windows for Windows-only software, PC gaming, touch and pen hardware, discrete GPUs, and maximum hardware choice. If neither platform is mandatory, compare exact laptop classes and configurations—not brand stereotypes—with at least 16GB of memory, 512GB of storage, the ports and displays you actually need, and a support plan that fits how long you intend to keep the machine.
