Choose antivirus software that combines real-time protection with cloud and behavior-based detection, automatic security-intelligence updates, network or web protection, and full and offline scan options. On Windows 10 and 11, Microsoft Defender Antivirus already offers this as a practical baseline; consider a paid product when it adds features, management, or support that fit your devices and risk. No single “miner detection” label or unsupported ranking is enough to make the choice.

What does cryptocurrency-mining malware do?

Cryptomining malware, often called cryptojacking, secretly uses a device’s or network’s processing power to mine cryptocurrency. The Australian Cyber Security Centre warns that this can slow devices, increase running costs, and affect operations. A miner may consume CPU or GPU resources without the owner’s knowledge.

Sustained unexplained processor or graphics use, unusual heat or fan noise, higher power use, or a sudden performance drop can be reasons to investigate. None proves a malware infection by itself: legitimate applications can also use substantial resources, and a miner may not cause every symptom all the time. Antivirus selection matters because useful detection must do more than look for a fixed list of known files.

The impact can extend beyond an individual computer. A compromised workstation may draw power continuously, reduce the performance of business applications, and consume shared network or cloud resources. A miner can also arrive as part of a broader malware infection, so the objective is not merely to lower processor use; it is to identify and remove the untrusted program and its delivery path.

Which detection capabilities matter most?

Prioritize products that combine known-threat signatures with behavioral and cloud-delivered detection. Also check whether protection is active when files run or arrive, whether it can block malicious network destinations, and whether you can perform full and offline scans.

Behavior and cloud detection

Signatures can identify known malicious files, but they are not the whole answer when malware changes or uses unfamiliar components. Microsoft describes Defender’s use of anomaly detection, machine learning, cloud-delivered protection, and behavior and process-tree blocking. Those methods can help identify suspicious activity beyond a simple file-signature match; they do not guarantee that every miner will be detected.

Process-tree analysis is useful because an apparently ordinary utility, script, or installer can launch a suspicious child process. Looking at that chain of activity gives a detector more context than the name of one executable. This is particularly relevant to fileless or newly modified threats, where the malicious behavior may be clearer than a stable file signature.

Cloud-delivered protection can bring intelligence about emerging threats into the detection process. Microsoft also says that automatic sample submission improves protection. When comparing products, look for clear documentation of behavioral and cloud features, and check that the relevant settings are enabled rather than assuming they are active by default. If privacy, network availability, or organizational policy limits cloud analysis, confirm what protection remains available locally.

Real-time and network protection

Real-time protection checks files and programs as they are accessed or executed, rather than waiting for a manual scan. Web or network protection can help block connections to malicious destinations. These capabilities complement one another: a file scan may identify a malicious program, while network protection can help interrupt contact with a harmful site or service.

Microsoft’s 2026 threat research describes a campaign in which poisoned search results and disguised utility downloads delivered GPU miners. Its guidance emphasizes cloud-delivered protection and network protection because attacker tools and techniques change quickly. This is a reason to value those layers, not evidence that any one product catches every campaign.

Ask whether web protection covers browsers and other applications, whether blocked destinations are logged, and whether an administrator can review or adjust the policy. A product that only scans files after download leaves less opportunity to stop a malicious destination or deceptive installer before execution.

Automatic updates

Check that security intelligence updates automatically and that the product can use its cloud protection features. A detector that relies on outdated intelligence can miss threats its vendor has since learned to recognize. For Windows Defender, Microsoft documents cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission as protection features; make sure the settings are not disabled by an administrator or policy.

Updates should cover both the detection intelligence and the antivirus application itself. Verify the last-update status after installation and after any major operating-system change. If a device is offline for long periods, determine how it receives updates and whether scans can still run with the latest locally stored intelligence.

Full and offline scanning

A quick scan is useful for a routine check, but Microsoft recommends a full scan when infection is suspected. Windows Security also offers a Microsoft Defender Offline scan. It restarts the computer into the Windows Recovery Environment to scan outside the normal Windows session, which can reduce the ability of persistent malware to hide.

Scan modes serve different purposes. A quick scan is a fast first check; a full scan examines the device more broadly; a custom scan can target a suspicious folder or drive; and an offline scan is valuable when a threat may start automatically during a normal Windows session. Check that the product clearly explains these choices and records the result in a history or report that you can review.

How should I compare antivirus products?

Compare capabilities and fit, not a “cryptocurrency miner detector” slogan. A product is a better match when its detection layers, scanning and recovery options, device coverage, controls, support, and licensing align with how you use your devices.

What to compare Questions to ask Why it matters
Detection approach Does it combine signatures with behavioral analysis and cloud-delivered intelligence? Miners can change, so known-file matching alone is an incomplete approach. Microsoft documents these additional methods for Defender. (Microsoft Learn)
Real-time and web/network protection Does it check programs as they run and help block malicious network destinations? These layers address different parts of a possible infection and delivery path. (Microsoft Learn; Microsoft 2026 threat research)
Scan and recovery options Are quick, full, custom, and offline scans available? Is there a clear way to review detections? A full scan is appropriate when infection is suspected; offline scanning can help with persistent threats. Windows Security provides these scan types. (Microsoft Support)
Updates Can intelligence update automatically, and can cloud protection remain enabled? Current intelligence and cloud protection matter as threats change. (Microsoft Learn; Microsoft Support)
Platform and management Does it cover your Windows, macOS, or Android devices? Can you centrally manage the devices that need it? Platform coverage and management needs vary. The NCSC notes built-in antivirus is available on Windows, macOS, and Android; commercial products may add features for particular users.
Additional controls and support Does it add ransomware or attack-surface controls, useful support, or administration features you need? A paid product is most relevant when its additional controls or support address a real gap for you.
Performance and compatibility Does the vendor explain its resource impact and compatibility? Does it support AMSI on Windows? The NCSC advises against running multiple real-time antivirus products because conflicts can affect stability and performance; it prefers Windows products that implement the Anti-Malware Scan Interface (AMSI).
License cost and terms What devices and platforms are covered, for how long, and with what renewal terms? Compare the actual license and coverage for your region and devices. No current price or independent detection ranking is established here.

Use the table as a buying checklist rather than a scorecard with invented weights. For a single Windows laptop, broad coverage and reliable updates may matter more than a large management console. For several household or business devices, platform support, centralized administration, reporting, and support can justify a subscription even when basic malware detection overlaps with built-in protection.

Calculate total license cost over the period you expect to use the product. Check the number of devices, supported operating systems, license duration, renewal price, cancellation terms, and whether important controls are limited to a higher tier. Do not treat an introductory offer, a retailer listing, or a brand name as proof of superior miner detection. Verify the current listing and terms for your country before purchase.

Is Microsoft Defender enough, or should I pay for antivirus?

Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows 10 and 11 and provides a credible baseline for many users: real-time protection, cloud and behavior-based detection, and multiple scan options, including full and offline scans. A paid product is worth considering when it offers a specific additional feature, support, or management capability you need—not simply because it advertises miner detection.

When the built-in protection may be a reasonable fit

  • You primarily use a Windows 10 or 11 device and its existing controls meet your needs.
  • You can keep real-time protection and security intelligence updates enabled.
  • You can run full or offline scans when the situation warrants them.
  • You do not need additional platform coverage, centralized administration, or paid support beyond what you already have.

When to evaluate a paid product

  • You need security and management across multiple platforms or a group of devices.
  • You have a specific requirement for additional ransomware or attack-surface controls.
  • You value support or administrative features that the built-in option does not provide for your use case.
  • You have compared the product’s actual coverage, compatibility, and license terms rather than relying on a generic detection claim.

The UK National Cyber Security Centre names commercial products as examples and advises users to research which option fits their needs. That is not a current independent test ranking, a guarantee of miner detection, or a statement of present-day price. Make a product decision using current vendor documentation and the needs of your devices; do not infer that a named option is the “best detector” without current independent evidence.

Built-in protection is not a reason to ignore configuration. On a managed computer, an administrator may control cloud protection, exclusions, or update behavior. On a personal computer, review those settings after updates and confirm that another security product has not disabled or taken over real-time protection.

How do I choose the right protection for my devices?

Start by listing the devices and protections you actually need, then compare candidates against those requirements. This avoids paying for overlapping features or buying a product that does not cover the platform you use.

  1. List devices and platforms. Note whether you need protection for Windows, macOS, Android, or a mix, and whether you administer only your own devices or a group.
  2. Set your must-haves. Put real-time protection, cloud and behavior-based detection, automatic updates, network protection, and suitable full or offline scanning at the top of the list.
  3. Identify any gap. Decide whether you need centralized management, additional ransomware or attack-surface controls, or support beyond the baseline available to you.
  4. Check compatibility. On Windows, favor products that implement AMSI, and do not plan to run two real-time antivirus products at once. The NCSC warns that the extra security benefit is minimal while conflicts can cause stability problems.
  5. Verify the license. Confirm supported platforms, number of covered devices, license duration, renewal terms, support, and total cost for your region before buying. These details can differ by product and offer.
  6. Check the settings after installation. Confirm real-time, cloud, web or network protection, and automatic intelligence updates are enabled. If an employer or administrator manages the device, ask before changing policy-controlled settings.
  7. Test the workflow. Locate the full, custom, and offline scan controls, Protection History, quarantine, and exclusion settings before an incident. Knowing where these controls are prevents hurried decisions when the computer is already behaving abnormally.

What should I do if I suspect a miner?

Update protection, run a full scan, and use an offline scan if persistence is a concern. Review what the antivirus found before restoring, allowing, or excluding anything.

  1. Update security intelligence. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection and check for protection updates. Keep real-time and cloud-delivered protection enabled.
  2. Run a full scan. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start the scan. A quick scan alone is not the recommended response when you suspect an infection.
  3. Use Microsoft Defender Offline if persistence is possible. In the same Scan options area, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan and start it. Save work first: the device restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment to scan outside the usual session.
  4. Review Protection History. Check detections, quarantined items, allowed threats, and exclusions. Do not allow or exclude a file unless you trust its publisher and the file itself. Microsoft warns that an exclusion stops real-time checking for the excluded path.
  5. Remove untrusted downloads and software. Pay particular attention to utilities obtained from unfamiliar sites or sponsored search results. The Microsoft-documented 2026 campaign shows how poisoned search results and disguised downloads can lead to GPU miners.
  6. Patch the device and applications. Install available operating-system and application updates after dealing with suspicious software, and leave protection enabled.
  7. Escalate when necessary. If the device is managed, handles sensitive information, or continues to show unexplained activity after scans, preserve the alerts and contact the administrator or qualified support rather than repeatedly approving files or deleting random system components.

Windows interface wording can vary slightly with updates or device management policies. If the scan control is unavailable or settings are locked, contact the administrator responsible for the device rather than trying to bypass the policy.

What are the common mistakes when selecting miner protection?

The most frequent mistakes are treating symptoms as proof, trusting a label instead of checking capabilities, and stacking real-time products as though more always means safer.

  • Choosing on a single detection claim. Ask how the product combines signatures, behavior, cloud intelligence, network protection, and scans.
  • Assuming a noisy or slow device is infected. High processor use, heat, fan activity, power consumption, and poor performance are investigation signals, not a diagnosis.
  • Relying only on quick scans. If you suspect infection, use a full scan; consider offline scanning when persistence is a concern.
  • Installing multiple real-time antivirus products. The NCSC says the added security benefit is minimal and conflicts can affect device stability.
  • Ignoring the settings and license. Protection that is disabled, out of date, incompatible, or not licensed for the device does not meet the intended need.
  • Trusting search results for utility downloads. Verify the publisher and download source; poisoned results have been used to distribute disguised miner installers.
  • Assuming a paid product has a proven advantage. A price or marketing statement is not an independent detection test. Compare current evidence and the features you need.
  • Creating broad exclusions to stop alerts. An exclusion prevents real-time checking of the excluded path. Investigate the alert and verify the publisher instead of weakening protection for convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can antivirus guarantee that it will catch every cryptocurrency miner?

No antivirus capability list establishes a guarantee. Detection methods help reduce risk, but threats and delivery techniques change; keep protection current and investigate suspicious activity rather than treating a clean scan as proof that nothing is wrong.

Does a high CPU or GPU reading mean my computer is mining cryptocurrency?

No. Resource use, heat, fan noise, power consumption, and slow performance are clues to investigate, not confirmation; legitimate software can produce similar effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I rely on antivirus product rankings to find the best miner detector?

Only if the ranking is current, independent, and explains what it tested. The available product information here does not establish current independent detection scores or retailer prices, so it cannot support a best-product ranking.

Is Microsoft Defender sufficient for detecting miners on Windows?

It is a credible baseline on Windows 10 and 11 because it includes real-time, cloud, machine-learning, and behavior-based protection plus full and offline scans. A paid product may still be appropriate for additional platform coverage, management, controls, or support.

Should I install two antivirus programs for extra protection?

No. The UK National Cyber Security Centre says the security benefit is minimal and products can conflict, causing stability or performance problems. Use one real-time antivirus product and compare other tools for genuine gaps.

What is the difference between a full scan and an offline scan?

A full scan examines the device while Windows is running. An offline scan restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment and checks outside the normal session, which can make it harder for persistent malware to hide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I exclude a miner file that I believe is legitimate?

Only after verifying the publisher and file. Microsoft warns that an exclusion stops real-time checking for that path, so an incorrect exclusion can leave malware unprotected.

How can poisoned search results lead to a miner?

Attackers can place disguised utility downloads in search results. Microsoft’s 2026 campaign used this approach to deliver GPU miners, so verify the publisher and download source and keep web, network, cloud, and real-time protection enabled.

What should I compare when checking the cost of paid antivirus?

Check the number and types of covered devices, supported platforms, license duration, renewal terms, support, management features, and the total price in your region. Do not assume an introductory price or brand name proves better detection.

The Bottom Line

Choose one well-supported antivirus product with real-time, behavioral and cloud detection, network protection, automatic updates, and full and offline scan options. Microsoft Defender is a sound Windows 10 and 11 baseline; pay for another product only when its coverage, controls, management, support, or licensing solves a specific need.
