For most Windows 11 users, start with Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Windows’ built-in protections enabled and up to date. Pay for another antivirus suite only when you can identify a specific need it meets—such as managing protection across several devices or a feature you will actually use. Compare current independent test results for protection, performance, and usability, then confirm compatibility and the exact plan’s features and renewal terms. Keep only one real-time antivirus engine active.

Is Windows Defender enough, or should I pay for antivirus?

For many people using Windows 11, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is a reasonable starting point rather than a reason to buy another antivirus automatically. Microsoft’s Windows guidance says Defender covers everyday risk for many Windows 11 users without additional software; the guidance is dated April 9, 2026, describes the U.S. context, and notes that feature availability can vary by region. Read Microsoft’s Windows guidance.

A paid or additional suite may make sense if it solves a concrete problem that the built-in protection does not address for you. Examples Microsoft identifies include managing security across multiple devices, family needs, or access to an additional feature. Identity-related services can also be relevant if they are genuinely part of the plan you are considering. The deciding question is not whether a package has the longest feature list, but whether the exact plan includes something you need and whether its benefit justifies its cost and added background activity.

Start by checking the protection already active on the PC. In Windows, open Start > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Confirm which antivirus provider is shown and whether protection is on. Microsoft says Defender automatically turns on if no other security product is installed and working. If a third-party product is active, identify it before installing another one.

Defender is included in both Windows 10 and Windows 11. That does not mean every Windows edition, device configuration, or regional feature set is identical, so check the operating system and edition you actually use. It does mean you should inspect the built-in status before treating a new subscription as a prerequisite.

What should I compare when choosing antivirus software?

Compare protection, system impact, and usability together. A strong protection result alone does not tell you how much the product affects the PC or how often its warnings interfere with legitimate activity.

What to compare What to check Why it matters
Protection Recent independent results, the test date, the Windows version, and what kinds of threats were assessed. A test score is evidence from a defined test period and setup, not a guarantee about future threats or every PC.
Performance The product’s separate system-impact result, not just its protection score. Security software runs alongside the rest of the system; a protection result does not measure that trade-off.
Usability False alarms and whether prompts and controls are manageable. Frequent misleading warnings or confusing controls can make protection harder to use well.
Feature fit Whether the exact plan includes a feature you will use, such as multi-device management or family controls. Features can differ by plan, so a product’s general feature list may not describe the edition being sold.
Compatibility Support for your precise Windows version and devices. Results or compatibility for one Windows setup should not be assumed to cover every edition or device.
Cost and terms Current price, renewal price, license duration, device limit, cancellation terms, and included support on the seller’s current page. These details can change and are specific to the offer and plan. They are not established by lab test scores.

Use the test’s scope to decide whether a result is relevant to your own PC. A result for Windows 11 is useful evidence for a Windows 11 buyer, but it is not the same as a test of every Windows release, language, device, or configuration.

Protection is only one part of the decision

Protection measures how well a product handled the threats in the specified test. Performance measures the effect on ordinary work, such as launching applications or copying files, within that test’s methodology. Usability captures issues such as false warnings and whether legitimate software is incorrectly treated as dangerous. Looking at all three helps you avoid selecting a product that appears impressive in one column but is disruptive in daily use.

Also distinguish a product score from a plan feature. A vendor may sell free, single-device, family, and broader multi-device editions under one brand. The result you read may identify the tested product version, while the offer you see uses a different edition or a later version. Match the tested name and version as closely as possible, then read the current plan description.

What do the latest AV-TEST Windows results show?

AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 Windows home-user assessment evaluated 15 products using default settings, current publicly available versions, and real-world threat scenarios. It scored protection, performance, and usability separately, awarding up to six points in each category; 17.5 points or higher earned its “TOP PRODUCT” award. See AV-TEST’s August 2026 Windows home-user results.

In that test, Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer 4.18 scored 6 points for protection, 5.5 for performance, and 6 for usability. Its product report identifies the test setup as Windows 11 Professional, English, 64-bit, with a July–August 2026 test period. View the Microsoft Defender product report.

Several products receive full marks across the three categories. These names identify products in that dated test; they do not by themselves establish a recommendation, current retail availability, or a particular subscription’s value.

Those figures are a dated lab result, not a timeless overall ranking or a promise that a product will prevent every infection. The separate scores are useful precisely because they keep different trade-offs visible: a protection score should not be mistaken for a performance or usability score. If you compare alternatives on AV-TEST, look at all three categories in the same test period and note the product version and operating-system context. The award threshold is AV-TEST’s own scoring rule, not a universal definition of the best choice for every household.

Do not transfer the Windows 11 result to Windows 10 automatically. The cited home-user table and the Defender product report specify Windows 11, with the report using Professional, English, 64-bit. A different operating system, language, edition, or hardware setup can produce a different experience and may have different support requirements.

How do I choose and install a Windows antivirus safely?

Use this sequence to avoid paying for protection you already have or leaving two real-time antivirus products competing on one PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the current provider. Open Start > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and see which antivirus is active. If you are unsure whether a separate product is installed and working, check its app and status before making a change.
  2. Write down the unmet need. Be specific: for example, you need to manage several devices or want a particular family feature. If you cannot name a need, first make sure Windows’ built-in protections are enabled and current rather than buying a suite by default.
  3. Compare recent independent results. Review protection, performance, and usability for the same test period. Check the tested Windows version and product version, and treat each score as evidence for that test—not as a guarantee for your configuration.
  4. Verify the exact plan before paying. On the seller’s current page, check compatibility, included features, device count, license duration, initial and renewal prices, cancellation terms, and support. Do not assume that a feature listed for a company’s product family is included in every plan.
  5. Use a trusted source and avoid overlapping real-time protection. Microsoft recommends trusted software sources. Follow the installer’s instructions if changing products, and confirm the intended product is active afterward. Microsoft warns that running multiple real-time antivirus products can affect performance and may cause installation or update errors.
  6. Keep protection current. Leave updates enabled, use modern browser protections, and avoid exclusions unless a specific need requires one. If you add an exclusion, keep it as narrow as possible; broad exclusions can create scanning blind spots.

When replacing an existing product, do not assume that installing a second package will neatly deactivate the first. Check which provider Windows reports as active, use the vendor’s normal removal or changeover process, and verify the final status in Windows Security. The goal is one active real-time engine, not several products competing to inspect the same files and activity.

Which Windows protections should stay enabled?

Antivirus is one part of Windows’ threat-protection stack. Microsoft describes Windows 11 protections that include Microsoft Defender Antivirus, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, network protection, tamper protection, attack surface reduction rules, Controlled folder access, and Exploit Protection. Microsoft Learn explains Windows 11 virus and threat protection.

SmartScreen helps protect against phishing, malicious sites and applications, and potentially malicious downloads. Tamper protection helps prevent malware from disabling real-time protection and related security settings. Attack surface reduction rules, Controlled folder access, and Exploit Protection address additional pathways by limiting risky behavior or exploitation. These protections address different parts of the security picture; adding another antivirus product is not a reason to turn off unrelated Windows safeguards.

Microsoft also recommends regular updates, antivirus, trusted sources for software, and modern browser protections. Its guidance on unwanted software advises using exclusions only when needed, because broad exclusions can leave files or locations outside scanning. See Microsoft’s guidance on protecting a PC from unwanted software.

Keeping these controls enabled does not remove the need for sensible behavior. Download software from sources you trust, install updates, and treat unexpected prompts carefully. No test score or feature bundle changes the importance of current software and a narrow approach to exclusions.

How should families and multi-device households evaluate a suite?

A suite can be easier to justify when one person needs to manage several computers or when family controls are a real requirement. First count the devices and identify their platforms. Then check whether the exact plan covers that number and those types of devices, rather than assuming a product advertised as “multi-device” covers every device you own.

Ask what management actually includes. It might be a shared account, a central dashboard, family controls, or another feature named on the current plan page. Confirm that the feature is available in your region and on your Windows version. If you only use one Windows PC and do not need centralized management, paying for a multi-device tier may add cost without solving a problem.

What costs and subscription terms deserve attention?

Antivirus pricing is not established by an independent protection score. Before entering payment details, record the introductory price, the ordinary renewal price, the billing interval, the license duration, the number of covered devices, and the cancellation process. Check whether support is included and whether the seller describes automatic renewal clearly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the offer for the exact edition, not only the vendor’s main product page. A lower-priced or free edition may omit a feature shown in a comparison chart, while a trial may convert to a paid renewal under terms that differ from the introductory offer. Because prices, discounts, inventory, and plan contents can change, rely on the current seller page for those details and keep a copy of the terms you accepted.

What are the most common antivirus-selection mistakes?

Most avoidable problems come from buying on a single headline claim or changing protection without checking how the PC is configured.

  • Assuming extra software is automatically safer: Microsoft says many Windows 11 users’ everyday risk is covered by Defender. Start from your actual needs, not the size of a product’s feature list.
  • Running two real-time antivirus products: Microsoft warns of possible performance effects and installation or update errors. Keep one active real-time antivirus engine.
  • Assuming every plan includes every feature: Verify the exact plan, device limit, compatibility, and terms on the seller’s current page.
  • Turning off protections or excluding too much: Keep Windows safeguards and updates enabled. Use exclusions only when necessary and avoid broad ones that create scanning gaps.
  • Treating a lab score as a guarantee: A test describes results under its own conditions and period. It cannot establish how every product will behave on every PC or protect against every future threat.
  • Ignoring the tested version: A result for one release does not automatically describe a later release, a different edition, or a bundled product with a similar name.
  • Forgetting regional differences: Microsoft notes that feature availability can vary by region. Confirm that the feature and support you expect are offered where you live.
  • Buying from an untrusted download source: Microsoft recommends trusted sources. A legitimate product obtained through an unverified installer can create a separate security problem.

How should I decide between Defender and another suite?

Use Defender as the starting point if you have a current Windows 11 PC, no specific unmet security need, and its built-in protections are enabled. Consider another suite when a verified feature or management need matters enough to justify its cost and additional software activity. Before deciding, compare recent independent results across protection, performance, and usability, then confirm the exact plan and terms for your region and devices.

A practical decision can be written as a short checklist: Which provider is active now? What problem am I solving? Which independent test and date support the candidates? What does the exact plan cost after renewal? How many devices and which operating systems does it cover? What happens if I cancel? If the answers do not show a meaningful benefit over the Windows baseline, staying with Defender is a defensible choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a free antivirus instead of paying for a suite?

A free product may be an option, but a product name or test score does not establish which features, device limits, or support its free edition includes. Check the exact edition’s current terms and compare it with the protection already available in Windows.

Does AV-TEST’s 2026 result apply to Windows 10?

The cited August 2026 results are for Windows 11 home users, and the Microsoft Defender product report specifies Windows 11 Professional, English, 64-bit. They do not establish equivalent results for Windows 10.

Will an antivirus subscription protect all my devices?

Not necessarily: device limits and supported platforms depend on the exact plan. Check the seller’s current terms for the number and types of devices covered before buying.

Can I run Defender and another antivirus together?

Microsoft Support recommends not running other antivirus or antispyware products at the same time as Windows Defender. Multiple real-time engines can affect performance and may cause installation or update errors. Keep one real-time antivirus engine active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know which antivirus is active on my PC?

Open Start, choose Windows Security, and open Virus & threat protection. Check the provider and protection status shown there before installing or changing software.

What does a 6 out of 6 AV-TEST score mean?

It is the maximum score in one AV-TEST category—protection, performance, or usability—under that test’s conditions. It is not a universal guarantee, and it does not replace checking the other two categories.

Should I disable SmartScreen or tamper protection when installing a suite?

No. Microsoft describes these as parts of Windows’ broader protection stack. Installing another product is not a reason to turn off unrelated safeguards; follow the installer’s instructions and verify the final security status.

Are broad antivirus exclusions safe?

Microsoft advises adding exclusions only when needed. Broad exclusions can create scanning blind spots, so keep any exclusion as narrow as the specific compatibility need allows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do test date and Windows version matter?

Independent tests evaluate particular product versions on a defined operating-system setup during a defined period. A Windows 11 result from July–August 2026 should not be treated as a test of every Windows release, device, language, or future product version.

What should I check before a subscription renews?

Confirm the ordinary renewal price, billing interval, license duration, covered-device count, cancellation process, and included support on the current seller page. Introductory pricing and plan features can differ from renewal terms.

The Bottom Line

For most Windows 11 PCs, begin with Microsoft Defender Antivirus and the protections already in Windows. Choose a third-party suite only for a specific, verified need, and compare protection, performance, usability, compatibility, device limits, and renewal terms before paying. Keep updates and Windows safeguards enabled, use trusted download sources, avoid broad exclusions, and never run two real-time antivirus engines together.
