Choose an AI product discovery platform by matching its capabilities to your catalog, shopper journeys, data, and merchandising needs—not by choosing the vendor with the biggest AI claim. If you use Shopify, first establish what its built-in search and Search & Discovery app can do. Consider a specialist when you can identify a specific gap, such as deeper semantic retrieval, richer recommendations, more merchandising control, or experimentation your current stack cannot provide.
There is no universal best platform. The right fit depends on how complex your products and buying journeys are, what your team can operate, and whether a pilot proves the platform improves outcomes that matter to your business.

What is an AI product discovery platform?
An AI product discovery platform helps shoppers find and evaluate products across more than a search box. Depending on the system, it may cover predictive suggestions, search results, category or listing pages, filters, personalized recommendations, merchandising rules, analytics, experiments, and conversational or visual discovery.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That breadth matters because shoppers move between discovery surfaces. Someone may type a broad query, narrow the results with filters, open a product page, and then choose a complementary item. A platform that improves only the first search results page may leave the rest of that journey untouched.
The category includes three useful operating models:
- Native commerce search: Capabilities built into the commerce platform, generally the simplest place to start. Shopify, for example, documents AI-powered search, predictive search, typo tolerance, filters, featured products, result-type controls, and recommendations through Search & Discovery.
- Specialist discovery platforms: External systems that can add more control over retrieval, ranking, personalization, recommendations, merchandising, experiments, analytics, or integrations.
- Experience or personalization suites: Broader systems where search is one part of a package that may also include recommendations, audience targeting, content personalization, merchandising, and related experiences. Nosto and Bloomreach are examples in this group.
Gartner’s June 24, 2025 market abstract treats search and product discovery as a distinct commerce-software market and lists vendors including Algolia, Bloomreach, Constructor, Coveo, Google, and Nosto. That confirms the category is broader than chatbots, but the existence of a dedicated market does not prove that every store needs an external platform.

Do you need a specialist platform, or is native search enough?
Start with the search and recommendation features already included in your commerce platform. A specialist is easier to justify when you can point to an important unmet need and verify that the added capability works with your catalog, data, team, and traffic.
Shopify says its online store has built-in AI-powered search, including predictive search and typo tolerance. Its Search & Discovery app lets merchants customize filters, feature products, alter result types, and add recommendations. Shopify also documents generated recommendations based on purchase history, product descriptions, and related collections, subject to product-status, publication, price, and inventory requirements.
For a smaller or less complex Shopify store, that is a sensible baseline—not a claim that native search will suit every catalog. Configure it, check its behavior on real queries, and identify gaps before paying for a separate system. The same principle applies elsewhere: understand your existing stack before buying overlapping functionality.
A specialist may be worth evaluating if your team needs capabilities such as:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- More effective handling of ambiguous, long-tail, or natural-language queries.
- More control over how products rank, including business rules merchandisers can change themselves.
- Recommendations across more surfaces, such as category pages, product pages, and the cart.
- Personalization that uses visitor behavior or segments, with controls appropriate to your consent and identity setup.
- Experiments and analytics that connect discovery behavior to outcomes such as add-to-cart, conversion, revenue, margin, or inventory effects.
- Governance, multilingual support, integrations, or operational scale that your current platform does not provide.
Do not buy a specialist only because “AI” appears in its marketing. If you cannot describe the gap, the required data, and the business result you want to improve, you do not yet have a useful basis for choosing.

How should you compare platforms?
Compare platforms against the same jobs, data, and operating constraints. A feature list is only a starting point: the important question is whether each capability is available, controllable, and measurable in your own environment.
1. Relevance and shopper intent
Check how the system handles exact product terms, synonyms, typos, brand and category searches, long-tail descriptions, ambiguous queries, multilingual phrasing, and searches with no matching product. Ask what the system means by semantic or vector search, how it combines those methods with keyword matching, and how the team can inspect or tune the results.
A search that understands a broad description can still fail if it returns unavailable items or ignores a useful product attribute. Evaluate retrieval alongside filters, catalog data, inventory, and ranking rules—not as an isolated model feature.

2. Coverage across discovery surfaces
List the places shoppers discover products on your site: the search box and results, category or listing pages, home page, product page, cart, and any post-purchase placement relevant to your business. Then check which of these the platform actually supports. “Product discovery” may refer to a narrow search module or a wider set of experiences.
3. Merchandiser control
Find out whether non-engineering teams can promote, demote, pin, redirect, filter, or schedule products and campaigns. Ask how they add synonyms, handle unavailable inventory, preview changes, and reverse a rule. A system that produces relevant results but requires engineering for routine merchandising changes may not fit a team that needs to act quickly.
4. Personalization and data
Ask what signals affect ranking: visitor behavior, segment, lifecycle stage, traffic source, geography, or catalog context. Establish which identity and consent data those features require, and whether useful results are possible when a shopper is anonymous or the store has limited behavioral history.
Personalization is not a substitute for accurate product information. Incomplete attributes, inconsistent variants, weak taxonomy, missing inventory, or sparse behavior events can undermine a sophisticated system. Review data quality and instrumentation as part of the platform decision.
5. Experiments and analytics
Look for the ability to preview changes, compare segments, and run A/B tests where traffic permits. Ensure the analytics can connect searches and recommendations to outcomes you care about: zero-result rate, query reformulation, clicks, add-to-cart, conversion, revenue per search or visitor, recommendation engagement, latency, product coverage, and effects on margin or inventory.

Agree on a primary success measure and guardrails before a pilot begins. A platform can raise clicks without improving purchases, or increase demand for products that are low in stock. Reading multiple measures together helps reveal those trade-offs.
6. Integration and day-to-day operation
Map how the platform receives catalog records, product attributes, prices, inventory, orders, product views, clicks, carts, and purchases. Ask about the APIs, SDKs, connectors, exports, and monitoring available for your setup. Clarify who will implement and maintain the integration, how often data updates, and how the storefront behaves if the discovery service is unavailable or slow.
Include reliability, latency, fallback behavior, multilingual needs, privacy and security review, governance, implementation effort, and total cost of ownership in the comparison. Current comparable prices or plan limits across these vendors have not been established; obtain current, scoped proposals rather than assuming a standard cost or feature bundle.
Which platform type fits your store?
Use the platform descriptions as starting points for evaluation, not as evidence that one option will outperform another for your store. Confirm the exact capabilities, implementation requirements, and release status with the vendor.
Shopify Search & Discovery: begin with the native baseline
Shopify’s native option is the logical first step for a Shopify merchant who has not yet configured built-in search, filters, and recommendations. It can cover predictive search, typo tolerance, filter customization, featured products, result-type controls, and recommendations without first adding a separate discovery system.
Shopify’s documented recommendation generation draws on purchase history, product descriptions, and related collections. Its requirements around product status, publication, price, and inventory matter: check eligibility if products are missing from recommendation placements. Consider a specialist only when a concrete limitation remains after the native setup is configured and assessed.
Algolia: an API-oriented discovery layer
Algolia positions AI Recommendations within a unified search-and-discovery platform. Its documentation describes ingesting catalog content and behavioral events such as views, clicks, add-to-cart events, and purchases; training models; ranking results in real time; and using continuous learning, filters, merchandising rules, experimentation, and analytics for clicks, conversions, and revenue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis makes Algolia a candidate for teams seeking substantial control over relevance, merchandising, recommendations, and experimentation through a dedicated discovery layer. Ask how the integration maps your event schema and catalog, which controls your team can operate, and how recommendation or search performance will be measured in your own store.

Nosto: search within a commerce-experience platform
Nosto’s Commerce Search describes keyword and vector search, personalization, merchandising, A/B testing, analytics, recommendations, dynamic facets, segment targeting, redirects, synonyms, and AI assistance. Its page says the offering supports 27 languages out of the box. This breadth may appeal to merchants looking to connect search with a wider set of commerce-experience capabilities.
Nosto’s Shopify Plus AI Search page claims support for 10,000 to 100,000-plus SKUs and describes personalized results, search merchandising, and testing. Treat SKU figures as vendor claims, not as a guarantee of suitability or performance. The same page labels some LLM and vector features as early access or coming soon, so confirm which features are generally available for your particular deployment before relying on them.
Bloomreach: search in a broader commerce suite
Bloomreach describes Search as a SaaS product-discovery platform with AI-driven search, merchandising, recommendations and pathways, SEO, insights and analytics, testing, and audience capabilities. Consider it when the goal is to connect search with a wider commerce experience, rather than procure search as an isolated feature.

Coveo: enterprise retail and complex B2B discovery
Coveo documents three commerce product-discovery solutions: Search, Product listings, and Recommendations. Its documentation describes machine-learning models using visitor interactions, predictive query suggestions, intent-aware ranking, automatic relevance tuning, and recommendation models based on seeded products, popularity, or user history.
That combination makes Coveo a candidate for enterprise retail and complex B2B requirements involving search, listings, recommendations, and merchandiser controls. Evaluate it against the organization’s integration, governance, data, and operational needs, not just the model features. Confirm how the capabilities fit the specific storefront and buying journey under consideration.
Constructor and the wider market
Constructor is among the vendors in Gartner’s 2025 market list. Its 2024 State of Ecommerce survey reported product recommendations (41%), visual or image search (36%), AI chatbots or virtual assistants (37%), and personalization (33%) among listed ecommerce GenAI opportunity areas. These are figures from Constructor’s survey, not an independent census of the entire ecommerce industry, and they describe opportunity areas rather than proof that a specific platform delivers business results.
How do you test a platform before buying?
Use a representative pilot with real catalog and event data, and test the complete discovery journey rather than relying on a polished demo. The goal is to find out whether the system works for your shoppers, team, and business measures.

- Build a representative query set. Include exact product searches, category and brand terms, misspellings, synonyms, long-tail descriptions, ambiguous intent, multilingual queries where relevant, and no-result searches. Use queries your customers actually make where available, and include difficult cases rather than only obvious product names.
- Create journey tests. Evaluate search results, category pages, product-page recommendations, cart recommendations, empty-state recovery, and merchandising campaigns. Make sure the journeys reflect the placements your business actually wants to support.
- Use real catalog and event data. Include the product attributes, variants, prices, inventory, and behavioral events that the platform would receive in operation. A demo built on complete sample data can conceal gaps in your taxonomy or event pipeline.
- Ask merchandisers to do real work. Have them promote seasonal products, demote unavailable inventory, pin a campaign, add synonyms, schedule a rule, and reverse a change. Note where engineering help is needed and whether changes can be previewed safely.
- Set measures and guardrails. Track zero-result rate, reformulation, click-through, add-to-cart, conversion, revenue per search or visitor, recommendation engagement, latency, coverage, and possible margin or inventory effects. Define what improvement would count as meaningful for your business before seeing the results.
- Run an online A/B test if traffic allows. Compare against the existing experience under a suitable test design. Do not treat an offline demo or a vendor case study as proof of your own likely impact.
A 2026 Target retail-product-search preprint reported study-specific online-test improvements over lexical-only search of 0.97% in click-through rate, 0.98% in order conversion, and 1.10% in demand per visitor, while approximately halving zero-result searches. Those are results from that study, not forecasts or guaranteed benchmarks for other retailers. The useful lesson is to validate changes online where possible, not to expect the same numbers.
For a small store without enough traffic for a meaningful A/B test, a structured query set and merchandiser review can still expose relevance, data, and workflow problems. Treat that evidence as a practical assessment, not as a measured conversion lift.
What are the most common selection mistakes?
The most avoidable mistakes are buying on a model label, overlooking the data needed to operate the system, and evaluating features without testing the workflow they are meant to improve.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choosing “AI” instead of an outcome. Specify the shopper problem and business measure first. Otherwise, vendors may demonstrate different features that are hard to compare.
- Skipping the native baseline. If your commerce platform already includes relevant search and recommendation tools, establish their capabilities before adding a second system.
- Ignoring catalog hygiene. Missing attributes, inconsistent variants, poor taxonomy, and stale inventory can limit results regardless of model sophistication.
- Counting features instead of testing control. Verify that the people responsible for merchandising can make and reverse the changes they need without an avoidable engineering bottleneck.
- Using only easy demo queries. Test misspellings, ambiguous wording, synonyms, long-tail needs, no-result cases, and real product data.
- Trusting a single metric. Clicks alone do not establish more conversions, revenue, or healthy inventory outcomes. Track a set of measures that reflects both shopper experience and business impact.
- Assuming a vendor capability is generally available. Ask whether a feature is live, early access, or planned, and whether it is included in the proposed deployment.
- Leaving operating costs out of the decision. Account for implementation, integration upkeep, data quality work, monitoring, governance, and the team’s time—not only the software quote.
How should you make the final decision?
Choose the least complex option that meets your defined requirements and can prove its value in your own operating context. Keep the decision tied to evidence from your catalog, queries, merchandising team, and shopper outcomes.
- Describe the gap. State what the current discovery experience fails to do and where that failure occurs.
- Set requirements by priority. Separate essential capabilities from desirable ones across relevance, coverage, merchandiser control, personalization, analytics, integration, and governance.
- Check data readiness. Confirm that the catalog and behavioral events needed for the desired capabilities are accurate and available.
- Compare a native baseline with specialists. Include only platforms that address the identified gap, and validate claims and feature availability directly.
- Pilot the same scenarios. Use a shared query set, real data, the same journey tests, and agreed success measures for each candidate.
- Account for operating fit. Decide whether your team can implement and maintain the integration, manage rules, monitor results, and meet privacy and security expectations.
- Proceed only when the evidence supports it. A feature checklist or generic uplift claim is not a substitute for a pilot that fits your store.
There is no broadly representative evidence that one AI product-discovery vendor universally increases conversion. Vendor claims, case studies, and study-specific research can help shape questions, but they should not replace validation against your own baseline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is vector search the same as semantic search in ecommerce?
The terms are related but are not interchangeable guarantees of behavior. Ask the vendor how keyword and vector retrieval are combined, how product attributes affect matches, and how your team can inspect results for real shopper queries.
Can AI product recommendations work with a small catalog?
A small catalog does not automatically rule out recommendations, but the useful approach depends on available product information and shopper signals. Ask which recommendation methods can use product descriptions or related collections when purchase and browsing history is limited.

No. Search, filters, listing-page ranking, recommendations, and merchandising are all part of product discovery, and a chatbot is only one possible interface. Start with the point in the shopping journey where customers struggle rather than adding a conversational feature by default.
What should I ask a vendor about AI feature availability?
Ask whether each feature is generally available, early access, or planned, and whether it is included in the configuration being proposed. Request that the pilot use the same feature status and data setup you would have after launch.
