The best AI video upscaler is the one whose model matches your source footage and whose hardware can process your delivery target reliably. Start by identifying whether the video is clean, noisy, compressed, interlaced, animated or archival; decide whether you need 1080p, 4K, 8K, frame-rate conversion or HDR; then test a model on representative shots before committing to a full render. For Windows, dedicated restoration software commonly needs at least 6 GB of GPU VRAM, while DaVinci Resolve planning guidance puts 12 GB of VRAM at a practical 4K starting point. Dedicated applications provide deeper restoration and batch controls, whereas an editor-integrated workflow avoids round-tripping. Cloud processing removes some local hardware limits but adds upload, download, queue and usage-cost trade-offs.

What does an AI video upscaler actually do?

An AI upscaler analyzes neighboring pixels and frames, then generates a higher-resolution version that attempts to preserve edges, texture and motion. It can make a small or soft source more usable at a larger delivery size, but it cannot verify and recreate detail that the camera never captured. The model may infer eyelashes, fabric, brickwork or foliage; those inferences can look convincing in one frame and obviously artificial when they shimmer or change during motion.

Upscaling is only one part of enhancement. Current tools may also denoise, recover detail, correct focus, stabilize a shot, deinterlace footage or interpolate new frames. Treat those as separate processing decisions. A model that is excellent at removing compression blocks may be a poor choice for animation lines or faces, and a frame-interpolation model does not automatically make spatial upscaling better.

Topaz’s enhancement guidance states that “Each AI model was designed with certain tasks in mind.” That is the useful principle: choose by source condition and the artifact you need to fix, not by a single universal ranking.

How should I inspect footage before choosing a model?

Open the original files at 100% and inspect several difficult shots, not just the cleanest opening frame. Identify the defects and the way they move through time before selecting an AI model.

Clean progressive camera or phone footage

Well-exposed progressive footage with light compression usually needs modest enhancement. Start in the editor you already use, especially when the project includes color, audio, titles and cuts that you do not want to rebuild. Resolve’s integrated Super Scale and RTX paths can reduce round-tripping for this kind of source.

Noisy, low-light or heavily compressed footage

Look for crawling chroma noise, mosquito artifacts around text, smeared shadows and ringing near high-contrast edges. Use a restoration-oriented model with explicit denoise and recovered-detail controls. Apply enough denoise to remove unstable noise without erasing hair, skin pores or fine texture; an aggressive setting can produce plastic-looking faces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Faces and portraits

Compare a face-oriented model with a neutral enhancement model. Inspect eyes, teeth, hairlines and skin across a moving shot. If pupils, earrings or strands of hair change shape from frame to frame, the model is inventing detail rather than restoring it. Manual tuning of noise, recovered detail and focus correction is more important than a model name.

Interlaced or archival material

Determine whether the source is interlaced before judging its sharpness. Displaying interlaced fields as progressive frames creates combing on motion; sending that material directly to a spatial upscaler can bake the defect into the result. Test deinterlacing and temporal handling on a short motion-heavy clip, such as a person walking or a camera pan.

Animation or severely degraded archives

Animation needs line integrity and stable flat-color regions, while damaged archives may contain scratches, flicker, warped geometry and missing frames. Select a model intended for that content and step through the result frame by frame. Watch for halos around line art, ringing on subtitles, crawling textures and changes in repeated patterns.

Which upscaling method fits each type of footage?

The table below is a starting point for testing, not a promise that one model will win on every clip.

What output target should I choose: 1080p, 4K or 8K?

Choose the delivery target before choosing a model. A 1080p target may need only a 1.5× or 2× enlargement, while a 720p source pushed to 4K requires a much larger inference step and exposes hallucinated detail. If the final platform, broadcaster or archive has a fixed specification, match that specification rather than exporting a larger file simply because the software permits it.

1080p delivery

For web video, presentations and many legacy sources, 1080p is often the most forgiving target. It limits the number of invented pixels and reduces render time and storage. A carefully denoised 1080p image can look more credible than a brittle 4K enlargement.

4K delivery

4K is useful for current televisions, high-resolution web delivery and reframing, but it magnifies temporal artifacts. Check fine text, faces and moving foliage at full size, then view the clip at the intended playback size. Topaz’s export guidance identifies H.264 and H.265 as common choices and says H.265 is needed for output above 4K.

8K delivery

8K demands substantially more VRAM, memory, storage and render time. Upscaling to 8K makes sense when a distribution or archival requirement specifically calls for it, or when you need room for reframing. It is not a reliable way to manufacture native 8K detail from a small, noisy source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frame-rate conversion and HDR

Frame interpolation creates new frames and should be evaluated separately from spatial enlargement. Test motion around hands, wheels, thin wires and repeating patterns, where interpolation errors are easiest to see. HDR delivery also requires a deliberate color-management decision; an upscaler does not automatically convert SDR highlights and color volume correctly. Verify transfer function, gamut, metadata and display intent in the finishing application.

How much GPU VRAM, RAM and storage do I need?

VRAM is a practical limit, but it is not the only specification that matters. Resolution, model size, frame size, bit depth, codec and batch settings all affect memory use. Check supported codecs, driver stability, power delivery, cooling and storage throughput before buying a GPU solely for its VRAM number.

Use case or application Published guidance How to interpret it
Topaz Video on Windows minimum 16 GB system RAM, dedicated GPU with 6 GB VRAM and 45 GB internal storage A baseline for supported operation, not a guarantee of fast previews or every model
Topaz Video recommended Windows configuration Windows 11, 32 GB RAM, NVIDIA RTX 30-series or newer and at least 8 GB VRAM A more practical starting point for regular enhancement work
Topaz Starlight models Some models require 10–16 GB or more VRAM, depending on model, GPU family and operating system Check the requirement for the exact model; the application minimum is not sufficient for all models
DaVinci Resolve, 1080p timelines About 8 GB VRAM in Puget Systems’ current guidance A planning point for this resolution, subject to codec and effect complexity
DaVinci Resolve, 4K timelines About 12 GB VRAM A useful 4K planning point, not a universal performance guarantee
DaVinci Resolve, 6K or 8K timelines 20 GB or more VRAM Large frames and heavier effects can exceed this, especially with high bit depth

Codec, bit depth and chroma subsampling affect hardware decoding in Resolve. A GPU that handles a lightly compressed 8-bit file may struggle with a high-bit-depth, intraframe or poorly supported codec. Keep working media on fast local storage, reserve enough space for source, cache and intermediate files, and monitor both VRAM and system memory during a representative render.

Should I use a standalone restoration application or an editor-integrated tool?

Use an integrated workflow when the enhancement belongs inside an existing edit, color and audio timeline. Use a standalone application when model selection, restoration controls, batch processing or a separate archive workflow matter more than keeping every operation in one project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standalone applications

Topaz Video runs as a desktop application on Mac and Windows and is designed for upscale, denoise, restoration, stabilization and frame interpolation. A standalone queue lets you process selected shots independently, compare models and create new media without changing the edit. That flexibility is valuable for archival work and large batches, but it introduces round-tripping, relinking and color-management checks.

DaVinci Resolve integration

The Topaz plugin for DaVinci Resolve requires Resolve Studio. The free Resolve edition will not load or run that plugin. Topaz also warns that UI responsiveness can fall during 3–4× upscaling, so a plugin may be convenient without being the fastest way to preview a large enhancement.

RTX Video Super Resolution

NVIDIA describes RTX Video Super Resolution as AI processing on RTX Tensor Cores that removes blocky compression artifacts and upscales playback video. Applications including DaVinci Resolve can expose the technology through their integrations. It is attractive when the compatible application already handles the timeline, but it does not replace a dedicated restoration model for every source type.

How to decide

  • Choose integrated processing when edit decisions, color, audio and enhancement must remain synchronized in one timeline.
  • Choose standalone processing when you need deeper model-specific controls, batch queues, archival derivatives or restoration independent of the NLE.
  • Render the same short source through both paths before deciding. Feature counts do not predict temporal stability, color handling or total turnaround time.

How do I run a fair preview before a full render?

A short, controlled test prevents hours of processing a model that fails on your most difficult shots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select representative clips. Include a clean shot, a dark or noisy shot, a face, motion across fine detail and any interlaced or animated material. Keep the original files untouched.
  2. Match the intended delivery settings. Set the target resolution, frame rate, color space and bit depth you will actually deliver. Do not compare a high-quality intermediate with a heavily compressed delivery encode.
  3. Test one variable at a time. Keep scale, frame rate and export codec constant while comparing models. If you change denoise, sharpening and interpolation together, you will not know which setting caused an artifact.
  4. Render short segments. Ten to thirty seconds per shot is usually enough to expose shimmer, combing, lip-sync drift, frame duplication and unstable textures. Include the beginning and end of a motion so temporal behavior is visible.
  5. Review at multiple sizes. Inspect individual frames at 100% for halos and ringing, watch the clip at normal playback for temporal errors, and view it at the intended display size for overall credibility.
  6. Record practical results. Note render time, peak VRAM, system memory, output size, cache use and any crashes or UI slowdown. A slightly less detailed model that completes reliably may be the better production choice.
  7. Only then queue the full job. Save the model and settings with the project so a replacement shot can be rendered consistently.

How should I judge quality beyond sharpness?

Sharpness is the easiest quality cue to fake. Judge whether the image remains believable through motion and whether the enhancement preserves information you can defend as coming from the source.

  • Temporal stability: fine detail should not flicker, crawl or change shape between frames.
  • Halos and ringing: bright outlines beside dark edges usually indicate excessive sharpening or an unsuitable model.
  • Texture consistency: grass, hair, fabric and brick should not turn into a repeating synthetic pattern.
  • Faces: eyes, teeth and skin should remain anatomically stable without waxy smoothing or invented pores.
  • Text and graphics: subtitles, logos and line art should retain clean geometry without double edges.
  • Motion: stabilization and interpolation should not warp straight lines, duplicate objects or create rubbery movement.
  • Color and levels: blacks, highlights, skin tones, alpha channels and metadata must survive the workflow.

What export and cloud details can change the decision?

Export settings can erase gains made by the model. Keep a high-quality intermediate when further grading, compositing or mastering is planned, then create delivery encodes separately. After every export, verify frame rate, audio passthrough, color space, subtitles and metadata.

Local export

Local processing avoids uploading sensitive footage and gives you direct control over caches and intermediate codecs. Its cost is hardware: demanding models can consume VRAM for hours, and high-resolution intermediates require substantial storage. Schedule long renders when the machine can remain cool and undisturbed, and keep a copy of the original media.

Cloud export

Cloud processing trades local hardware limits for transfer time, queueing and usage charges. Topaz’s cloud-export estimates cover processing only; they exclude upload and download time. Calculate the complete turnaround as upload time plus queue time plus processing plus download time, and confirm that your connection can sustain the required transfers. For confidential footage, also check the provider’s retention and deletion terms before uploading.

Codec choices

H.264 is broadly compatible and useful for many previews and deliveries. H.265 is more efficient at comparable quality and, according to Topaz’s export tutorial, is required for output above 4K. Confirm that the target playback system supports the selected profile, level, chroma format and bit depth before committing to a batch.

What common problems should I troubleshoot?

The output looks sharper but worse

Reduce sharpening or recovered-detail strength and compare a neutral model. If compression noise is being enhanced, denoise first or choose a restoration model designed for that source. Recheck the result in motion; a crisp still frame can conceal severe shimmer.

The render runs out of memory

Lower the output resolution for the test, close GPU-intensive applications, reduce model size or process shorter segments. Check the exact VRAM requirement for models such as Starlight; an application that opens successfully may still exceed memory during inference.

Interlaced footage has combing

Confirm field order and deinterlace before spatial enlargement. Test a motion-heavy clip rather than a static frame, because combing appears only when fields differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The plugin is unavailable in Resolve

Verify that Resolve Studio, rather than the free edition, is installed and that the plugin supports your operating system and Resolve version. If the plugin remains impractical, render selected shots in the standalone application and relink the resulting media.

Cloud processing takes longer than local rendering

Include upload and download in the estimate instead of comparing processing times alone. Large source files, a slow upstream connection or a queue can outweigh the cloud’s faster hardware. For repeated projects, compare the total cost and turnaround of local storage and GPU capacity with the provider’s usage charges.

What is the most practical decision checklist?

Use this order for each project:

  1. Inspect the footage: classify it as clean, interlaced, noisy, compressed, animated, portrait-heavy or archival.
  2. Define delivery: write down resolution, frame rate, HDR or SDR, color space, codec and whether you need reframing.
  3. Match the model: select restoration, face, animation, deinterlacing, stabilization or interpolation controls only when the footage requires them.
  4. Check the machine: verify VRAM, RAM, free storage, codec support, operating system, drivers, cooling and power.
  5. Preview difficult shots: compare temporal stability, halos, texture, faces, motion and color—not just a paused frame.
  6. Compare the complete workflow: include render time, file size, relinking, export, upload, download, queueing and usage costs.
  7. Archive safely: retain the original and a high-quality intermediate before making smaller delivery encodes.

There is no defensible universal speed or quality winner across current upscalers. Footage condition determines model choice, while VRAM and codec support determine what is practical. A dedicated restoration application is strongest when you need specialized controls and batch work; an integrated editor path is strongest when timeline continuity matters. The reliable choice is the one that passes a representative preview and completes the full delivery workflow without introducing artifacts you cannot accept.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AI upscaling increase a video’s frame rate?

Not by itself. Spatial upscaling changes pixel dimensions; frame-rate conversion uses a separate interpolation process that generates additional frames. Test interpolation independently because fast motion, thin objects and repeating patterns can expose warping or duplicated subjects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I upscale video with an integrated graphics processor?

Some editors may open with integrated graphics, but demanding AI models generally depend on a supported dedicated GPU path. Expect slower processing or unavailable models, and check the exact application’s operating-system and hardware requirements rather than assuming that shared system memory substitutes for VRAM.

Should I upscale an entire project or only selected shots?

Process only shots that benefit from enlargement or restoration, then replace those shots in the edit. Titles, graphics and already-clean native-resolution footage often gain nothing from AI enhancement and can make the batch larger and slower.

How can I preserve subtitles and metadata during enhancement?

Treat subtitles, audio tracks and metadata as deliverables to verify after rendering, not as guaranteed passthrough features. Keep the original container and project information, then inspect the exported file in the target playback environment before deleting intermediates.
