Choose an AI security tool by testing whether it can cover your actual AI architecture and carry findings all the way to verified closure. The right product is not simply the scanner with the longest list of checks: it must identify weaknesses in the models, data paths, applications, agents, dependencies, and deployment environments you operate; add context such as reachability and runtime exposure; assign accountable owners; and fit the workflows your developers and security team already use. Start with a documented asset scope, map requirements to the AI lifecycle, run a controlled proof of value, and score each candidate on detection quality, prioritization, remediation workflow, operating effort, deployment, and cost.
What should an AI security tool do beyond scanning?
A scanner produces findings. Vulnerability management turns those findings into risk decisions, assigned work, evidence, and closure. Your shortlist should therefore be evaluated as a lifecycle system rather than as a point-in-time detection engine.
OWASP’s vulnerability-management workflow starts by collecting results from scanners and other sources, then deduplicating and normalizing them. It continues with risk-based prioritization, ownership assignment, remediation tracking, and verification that the issue is closed. OWASP’s Vulnerability Management Guide makes the same distinction in broader terms: preparation, identification, reporting, and remediation are separate activities, and a working scanner does not by itself constitute a managed vulnerability program.
This distinction matters especially for AI systems, where one weakness can appear in several layers. A vulnerable library may be reported by a software-composition scanner, an application scanner, and a cloud assessment. A prompt-injection path may be found during an agent test and then reproduced in an application test. If the platform cannot link those observations to one underlying issue, teams may spend time triaging duplicates while the exploitable path remains open.

OWASP’s DevSecOps guideline captures the principle directly: “The same CVE reported by Trivy, Grype, and Snyk is one issue, not three.” Your tool should show how it merges equivalent findings, preserves the original evidence, and lets an analyst split results again when supposedly identical issues have different owners or attack paths.
How do you define the AI assets and vulnerabilities in scope?
Write the scope before reviewing products. A tool can appear comprehensive simply because its marketing definition of “AI security” is broader than the components you actually need to protect.
Inventory the complete system
- Applications: user interfaces, APIs, orchestration services, plug-ins, and background jobs that invoke models.
- Models: internally trained models, fine-tuned models, hosted models, open-weight models, embedding models, and classifiers.
- Training and inference data: source repositories, data lakes, vector stores, retrieval indexes, prompts, system instructions, logs, and evaluation sets.
- Agents and integrations: tool-calling flows, browser or database connectors, identity permissions, memory stores, and human-approval steps.
- Deployment environments: development, test, staging, production, containers, orchestration platforms, private infrastructure, and cloud services.
- Dependencies: model runtimes, inference servers, packages, base images, infrastructure-as-code, build pipelines, and external services.
Record the owner, business purpose, data sensitivity, environment, and exposure of each item. Include systems that are not labeled “AI” but provide a critical dependency, such as an API gateway, identity provider, secrets store, or data pipeline.
State the weaknesses you need to find
Turn broad goals into testable categories. Examples include exploitable software vulnerabilities, insecure model or data handling, exposed interfaces, excessive agent permissions, unsafe tool invocation, weak authentication, secrets in code or configuration, vulnerable containers, and failures in monitoring or retirement controls. The list should reflect your threat model and regulatory obligations, not a vendor’s category names.
Mark what is out of scope
Explicit exclusions prevent misleading scores. For example, you might assess model-serving APIs and retrieval pipelines but leave third-party model training to a supplier’s assurance process. Document whether the evaluation includes production testing, source-code access, private models, or only externally reachable assets. A product that cannot assess an excluded area is not necessarily deficient; it is simply not being evaluated for that use case.
How can OWASP AISVS help evaluate AI-specific coverage?
Use OWASP’s Artificial Intelligence Security Verification Standard (AISVS) as a requirements checklist, not as a product certification. OWASP describes AISVS 1.0, released in June 2026, as 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices. The catalogue spans training data, model development, deployment, agent orchestration, monitoring, and retirement.

Map each requirement to one of three outcomes:
- Automated check: the product can test the requirement and produce repeatable evidence.
- Assisted check: the product supplies evidence or workflow support, but a specialist must make the final determination.
- Process or architectural control: the requirement must be implemented through design, policy, configuration, or a separate assessment.
Ask vendors to identify the exact AISVS requirement, assessment method, evidence produced, assumptions, and known blind spots for every claimed check. Require a demonstration on a representative system rather than accepting a feature name such as “AI red teaming” or “agent security.” AISVS is vendor-neutral and open; it does not prove that a particular commercial product implements any requirement correctly or completely.

AI red teaming, general vulnerability scanning, external attack-surface management (EASM), and end-to-end vulnerability management overlap but are not interchangeable. Red teaming emphasizes adversarial evaluation of threat models and system behavior. EASM focuses on discovering and monitoring externally exposed assets. A scanner may identify a defect without assigning or tracking the fix. A vulnerability-management platform should connect those inputs to triage, ownership, deadlines, exceptions, and closure.
OWASP’s vendor-evaluation criteria published on February 4, 2026, address AI red-teaming providers and tooling, including threat models, evaluation rigor, tooling quality, and governance. Those criteria are useful when selecting a red-team capability, but they should not be treated as proof of continuous vulnerability remediation.
How do you compare coverage, deployment, and integrations?
Product fit depends on your architecture, existing monitoring and scanning, organizational size, and current security problems. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) frames the selection question as, “How do you choose the right vulnerability scanning solution?” Its related EASM buyer guidance asks, “What are you trying to achieve?” in the specific context of externally exposed assets. Apply those prompts to your own scope instead of assuming that EASM criteria describe every AI security product.
| Comparison area | Questions to ask | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Asset coverage | Which languages, model types, data stores, agent frameworks, cloud services, containers, and APIs are supported? | A current support matrix and a demonstration using your representative components. |
| Assessment modes | Can it analyze source, binaries, images, configurations, live endpoints, model behavior, and identity paths? | Sample reports showing prerequisites, test depth, and limitations for each mode. |
| Deployment | Is the service hosted, self-managed, private-cloud, or hybrid? Where do source code, prompts, model artifacts, and findings reside? | Architecture diagrams, data-flow documentation, isolation controls, and deletion procedures. |
| Integrations | Can it ingest existing scanners and export to issue tracking, source control, CI/CD, security information and event management, and asset inventories? | A working integration in a controlled project, including authentication and failure behavior. |
| Identity and access | Can permissions separate analysts, developers, approvers, and auditors? Does it support single sign-on and granular project access? | Role matrix, audit-log examples, and administrative workflow. |
| Operations | What agents, network paths, updates, tuning, and maintenance are required? | Installation plan, upgrade process, support boundaries, and administrator time estimates. |
NCSC selection guidance also highlights deployment models, specialized options, and licence costs. Treat prices, included assets, scan limits, data-retention terms, and support levels as current commercial facts that must be confirmed directly with each vendor; they change by edition, region, contract, and date.

How do you test whether findings are accurate and actionable?
Run a controlled evaluation with a known test set. The goal is not to maximize the raw finding count; it is to determine whether a security or engineering team can reproduce, understand, prioritize, and fix the results.

- Build representative fixtures. Include intentionally vulnerable code, misconfigured infrastructure, unsafe agent permissions, exposed endpoints, data-handling failures, and known-good components. Keep the fixtures isolated and document the expected result for each one.
- Record reproducibility. For every candidate finding, capture the exact asset, version, trigger, evidence, and steps needed to reproduce it. A result that cannot be reproduced should be labeled accordingly rather than treated as confirmed risk.
- Measure normalization. Feed equivalent issues from existing tools and check whether the candidate groups them into one record while retaining source evidence. Inspect how it handles different severities, owners, environments, and attack paths for the same underlying defect.
- Measure actionable-finding rate. Have practitioners classify results as confirmed, needs investigation, or not applicable using a consistent rubric. Track duplicates and low-value results with your own test set; the cited guidance does not provide a universal comparative benchmark.
- Inspect evidence quality. Check whether a developer receives the affected component, path, input, exploit condition, remediation guidance, and verification method rather than a generic description.
- Test change detection. Modify a fixture, rescan it, and verify that the platform updates status and history instead of creating a second unresolved record.
Do not convert this exercise into an invented accuracy percentage. No independent head-to-head results establish which commercial AI security product performs best. Your organization’s test set, architecture, and decision rules should determine the result.
How should the tool prioritize AI vulnerabilities?
Severity scores are inputs, not decisions. OWASP recommends adding context such as reachability, runtime exposure, and asset criticality, and cautions against relying on CVSS alone.
Use exploit and attack-path context
- Reachability: Can an attacker reach the vulnerable code, model endpoint, tool, data store, or identity path from a realistic entry point?
- Runtime exposure: Is the affected component active in production, restricted to a build environment, or disabled?
- Asset criticality: What business process, data set, safety function, or customer commitment depends on it?
- Code-path reachability: Is the vulnerable function actually invoked by the deployed application or agent workflow?
- Exploit status: Is there evidence of active exploitation, a practical proof of concept, or only theoretical impact?
- Blast radius: Could the issue expose credentials, cross tenant data, model artifacts, privileged tools, or many downstream applications?
Demand explainable prioritization
The platform should show why an issue moved up or down the queue and which signals caused the change. Ask whether analysts can override a recommendation, record the rationale, and preserve an audit trail. A transparent lower score is more useful than an opaque “AI priority” that developers cannot challenge or understand.
Separate treatment from urgency
Not every high-severity finding requires the same action. A reachable production flaw may need an immediate code change or compensating control; an unreachable development dependency may be scheduled with other maintenance; an accepted risk may need an expiry date and a named approver. The tool should represent these states distinctly rather than hiding them in one severity field.
How do you verify that findings reach closure?
Trace one finding from detection to verified remediation during the proof of value. The workflow should support ownership assignment, due dates, exceptions, evidence, and closure verification.
- Create a canonical issue. Confirm that duplicate scanner results map to one record with links to every source observation.
- Assign an accountable owner. Route the issue to the team that can change the vulnerable code, configuration, model pipeline, identity policy, or deployment.
- Set treatment and due date. Record whether the plan is remediate, mitigate, accept, transfer, or defer, and require an approver for exceptions.
- Send actionable context. Push the issue into the team’s existing tracker or development workflow with affected versions, evidence, reproduction details, and a suggested verification test.
- Reassess after the change. Rescan or rerun the relevant test and compare the new result with the original evidence.
- Preserve closure evidence. Keep the fix reference, test output, approver, date, and remaining limitations. A status change without evidence is not verified closure.
Ask how the system handles abandoned tickets, reopened findings, asset retirement, ownership changes, and compensating controls. These edge cases reveal whether the product supports a durable program or only a dashboard of current alerts.

What should a proof-of-value test include?
Use a documented, time-boxed evaluation on representative systems, not a polished demonstration. Include security, application, platform, data, and engineering participants so that workflow effort is measured alongside detection.

| Test dimension | What to measure | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Detection coverage | Expected weaknesses found across the selected applications, models, data paths, agents, and environments. | Does the product cover the risks that matter in our architecture? |
| Finding quality | Reproducibility, evidence completeness, duplicate rate, and low-value rate using your fixtures. | Will analysts and developers trust the queue? |
| Prioritization | Use of reachability, exposure, criticality, exploit status, and code-path context. | Can the team explain why work is ordered this way? |
| Workflow fit | Time to assign, create a ticket, approve an exception, retest, and document closure. | Does the tool fit existing ownership and delivery processes? |
| Operating effort | Setup, tuning, credential management, integration maintenance, and analyst or developer hours. | Can the organization sustain the process after purchase? |
| Governance | Audit logs, role separation, retention, reporting, and evidence export. | Can security and auditors reconstruct decisions? |
Write pass/fail criteria before the test begins. Compare candidates on the same fixtures, permissions, scan windows, and workflow steps. These measurements are evaluation methods for your organization, not published performance claims about any product.
How should you weigh cost and operating trade-offs?
Calculate total operating burden, not just the licence line. Include implementation, integration development, data-hosting requirements, analyst triage, developer interruptions, tuning, upgrades, support, and the cost of retaining existing tools when the new product cannot replace them.
- Deployment model: A hosted service may reduce infrastructure work, while self-managed or private deployments may better fit data-residency, isolation, or regulated-environment requirements.
- Integration effort: Native connectors are valuable only if they preserve ownership, evidence, and status. A connector that creates unassigned alerts can increase workload.
- Scale assumptions: Clarify whether pricing follows assets, applications, users, scans, findings, model calls, data volume, or environments. Confirm overage rules and renewal terms.
- Team capacity: A highly configurable platform can be powerful but may require a dedicated administrator. A simpler service may be easier to sustain but provide fewer controls for unusual architectures.
- Reporting needs: Check whether reports can separate open risk, accepted risk, mitigated risk, and verified remediation for the audiences that need them.
Do not treat a low purchase price as low total cost if the product generates duplicates, lacks integrations, or requires manual evidence collection. Conversely, do not pay for broad modules that do not map to your defined scope.

Use each category for the job it is designed to perform, and connect the outputs when necessary.
| Category | Primary purpose | What it may not provide |
|---|---|---|
| Vulnerability scanner | Detect weaknesses in code, dependencies, configurations, images, or live systems. | Deduplicated ownership, risk context, exception governance, and verified closure. |
| AI red-team tooling | Probe model and agent behavior against threat models and adversarial scenarios. | Continuous asset inventory and complete remediation workflow. |
| EASM | Discover and monitor an organization’s externally exposed assets. | Deep model behavior testing or internal code-path analysis. |
| Application-security platform | Find and manage weaknesses in software and delivery pipelines. | Coverage of every model, data, agent, and retirement control. |
| Vulnerability-management system | Aggregate, normalize, prioritize, assign, track, and verify findings from multiple sources. | It may depend on specialist scanners or red-team tools for detection. |
A practical architecture may use several categories. The buying question is whether the combination produces one understandable queue with accountable owners and defensible closure evidence.

What do regulated organizations need to check?
Regulatory language must be interpreted in its stated jurisdiction and service context. FedRAMP’s 2026 rules distinguish vulnerability mitigation from remediation and describe detection and response duties for regulated cloud providers. Those requirements apply in the federal cloud context covered by the rules; they are not universal commercial service-level agreements.
If FedRAMP applies to your environment, map the applicable controls, evidence, reporting channels, roles, and response obligations to the product and your operating procedures. Ask the vendor which deployment, logging, support, and evidence features are available in the specific authorization boundary and service tier you would use. Do not assume that a product’s general security statement satisfies a control without confirming the exact scope and responsibility split.
For other regulated sectors, use the same discipline: identify the authoritative requirement, its geography and edition, the responsible party, the required evidence, and the consequence of noncompliance. Keep legal interpretation separate from a vendor’s marketing claims.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat are the most common buying mistakes?
- Choosing by feature count: A long list of AI checks does not show that they apply to your architecture or produce usable evidence.
- Buying a scanner instead of a process: Alerts without normalization, ownership, due dates, and closure verification create backlog rather than remediation.
- Using severity alone: A severe but unreachable development issue may be less urgent than a moderate flaw on a production agent with privileged tools.
- Accepting unsupported coverage claims: Require a test on your languages, models, data paths, integrations, and deployment mode.
- Ignoring data handling: Confirm where source, prompts, model artifacts, findings, and logs are processed and stored.
- Skipping existing-tool integration: Replacing every scanner may be unnecessary; an effective platform can aggregate and deduplicate established sources.
- Failing to define ownership: Security may discover an issue, but engineering, platform, data, or a supplier may control the fix.
- Measuring alerts instead of outcomes: Track time and effort to reach verified closure, not just the number of findings produced.
How do you make the final selection?
Score each candidate against the same weighted criteria, with weights derived from your scope and objectives. A useful decision record includes:
- Scope fit: coverage of the AI components and environments that matter.
- Evidence quality: reproducibility, actionable guidance, and transparent limitations.
- Normalization: deduplication across scanners and preservation of source evidence.
- Risk context: reachability, runtime exposure, criticality, exploit status, and code-path data where relevant.
- Remediation workflow: ownership, issue tracking, exceptions, due dates, retesting, and closure evidence.
- Deployment and integration: fit with architecture, identity, data handling, and existing tools.
- Operating model: analyst and developer effort, maintenance, reporting, and support.
- Commercial terms: licence metric, scale limits, implementation cost, renewal terms, and required modules.
Document disqualifiers separately from scores. For example, inability to run in the required environment, inability to protect sensitive model artifacts, or inability to assign findings to accountable owners may be a hard stop regardless of other capabilities. Select the product or combination of products that your teams can operate continuously and use to prove that risk was reduced—not the one that merely produces the most impressive demonstration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one AI security tool protect both models and the surrounding cloud infrastructure?
Sometimes, but coverage is product- and architecture-specific. Treat model behavior, application code, identities, containers, cloud configuration, and external exposure as separate test domains, then verify whether one platform assesses each domain or integrates specialist tools without losing ownership and evidence.
Should an organization replace its existing vulnerability scanners when buying an AI security platform?
Not automatically. First test whether the new platform can ingest, normalize, and correlate current scanner results; replacement is justified only when the existing tools leave a material coverage or workflow gap that the new platform demonstrably closes.
Does OWASP AISVS certify an AI security product?
No. AISVS is a vendor-neutral catalogue of testable requirements for AI-enabled systems. Use it to define and verify requirements, and ask each vendor to show exactly which checks it performs and what evidence it produces.
How can a small security team keep remediation from becoming an unmanageable backlog?
Start with a narrow, high-value scope such as production AI endpoints and their privileged integrations. Establish one ownership route, a small set of risk-context rules, and a closure-evidence standard before expanding to additional models or environments.
