Compare the specific feature and its current settings—not just the browser brand—and treat vendor privacy statements as disclosures, not independent verification.
What to check before choosing an AI browser
For each assistant you are considering, follow the information from your device to the service and back. A prompt may be only part of what the feature receives: depending on the task, it could also receive page text, selected text, tab titles or URLs, browsing history, or information from connected accounts. Ask these questions before enabling a feature or sharing sensitive content:
- Data sent: Does the assistant receive only your prompt, or also page content, tabs, history, files, or account-connected information? Is the data sent to a service provider?
- Activation and scope: Is the feature off by default, opt-in, and deliberately invoked, or active during ordinary browsing? Can you revoke its permissions or disable it?
- Retention and model use: How long are prompts and context kept? Can they be used to improve or train models? Are feedback submissions handled differently?
- Your controls: Can you review or delete activity, clear local conversation history, use temporary chats, or change auto-delete settings?
- Agent authority: Can the assistant click, fill forms, or otherwise act for you? Can you inspect or pause its session, and does it require confirmation for consequential actions?
- Evidence quality: Is a claim in a current policy, a product announcement, an independent audit, or academic research? A company’s description of its safeguards is not an independent finding that the product is safe.
These checks describe separate safeguards. A feature being optional does not tell you how long its data are retained; “not used for training” does not mean data are never processed; and local history controls do not establish what a remote service receives.
What current vendor disclosures say
The examples below illustrate why you should assess an individual assistant and its settings. The policies and feature descriptions are vendor statements, not a standardized comparison or independent privacy audit. Recheck the live policy and in-product controls before relying on them; features and terms can change.

Brave Leo and AI browsing
Brave’s browser privacy policy, stated as last updated September 23, 2026, says Brave does not collect or retain users’ browsing history. It also describes information Leo may process for particular requests: page or document content for summaries and suggested questions, and tab titles and URLs for tab-management features. The policy describes prompt and context processing as ephemeral, while local conversation history is available if enabled. Feedback is different: it may include a full conversation and has a separate retention period. Read the policy for the scope and exceptions of each claim.
In its AI browsing announcement, published December 10, 2025 and updated May 5, 2026, Brave describes the feature as opt-in and manually invoked, with a separate AI browsing profile and controls to inspect or pause a session. Brave says its prompt-injection defenses reduce risk but cannot eliminate it. That is a description of the design, not independent confirmation of its effectiveness.

Perplexity Comet
Perplexity’s Comet Data Privacy & Security FAQ says integrations are opt-in and can be modified or revoked. It says browsing data may be used as needed to fulfill searches and agentic actions and to provide or improve the Comet experience, and that users can delete browsing data through Comet privacy settings. The FAQ’s current page revision date, all current defaults, and retention periods are not established here, so check the live FAQ and settings for those specifics.
Gemini features and private browsing
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, listed as updated September 24, 2026, identifies content shared from a browser as a possible category of user-provided information. It describes controls to review and delete Gemini activity, adjust auto-delete, and control whether data are used to improve Google AI. Google’s privacy policy describes Incognito as helping keep browsing private from other people using the same device, and separately discusses account history and personalization controls. Incognito is not a guarantee that content you deliberately send to an AI feature will remain on your device or avoid processing by that service.

How to judge agent control and security
An assistant that acts on web pages raises a different question from one that only answers a prompt: what can it do, and how can you supervise it? Look for a visible session, a way to pause or inspect activity, a clearly limited profile or permission scope, and confirmation before actions with real consequences.
For example, Google’s AI responsibility document says the Chrome agentic framework it describes requires human confirmation for sensitive actions such as payments and purchases, social-media posts, and use of credentials. This applies to the documented framework; it should not be generalized to every AI browser or every action. Check the confirmation behavior of the exact feature you plan to use.

Web pages themselves can contain instructions that try to influence an agent. Brave describes prompt injection as a systemic challenge and says its mitigations do not eliminate the risk. A December 8, 2025 preprint, Privacy Practices of Browser Agents, reports 30 vulnerabilities across the eight browser agents it studied, including disabled browser privacy features and sensitive information being autocompleted into form fields. That is a result for those agents in that study—not a current vulnerability count for every product or a ranking of today’s browsers.

- Choose the task first. Decide whether you need page summaries, cross-tab help, account integrations, or an agent that can act. More context and authority can mean more data exposure and more consequential failure modes.
- Check the exact data flow. Read the policy for the feature, not merely the browser’s general privacy promise. Identify whether page text, tab details, history, or connected-account data are sent for your intended task.
- Set controls before use. Disable features you do not need, review history and deletion options, and check whether local conversation history or feedback sharing is enabled.
- Test supervision on low-stakes tasks. Before allowing an agent near payments, credentials, posting, or sensitive forms, confirm that you can see and pause its work and understand when it asks for approval.
- Recheck after changes. Policies, defaults, and features can shift. Revisit the relevant privacy settings and disclosures when an update changes how the assistant works.
The available disclosures do not establish an independently verified privacy winner across current AI browsers. Treat “private,” “optional,” “deleted,” and “not used for training” as distinct claims to verify for the particular feature, data type, and setting you will use.
