Choose by the kind of control you need, not by the avatar’s appearance. HeyGen is the most direct choice when you want text prompts and presets for expressions, gestures, and gaze. D-ID is better when your workflow needs named emotional sentiments such as empathetic or excited through an API or Studio. Runway transfers a performance from a reference video, while Synthesia generates facial expression mainly from speech and source footage for structured business videos and personal avatars.

The differences matter because “expression control” is not one feature. A prompt, a sentiment label, spoken delivery, and a filmed performance each give you a different level of timing, repeatability, and creative direction.

Which AI avatar tool gives you the most control over facial expressions?

HeyGen documents the broadest set of direct controls: Avatar V exposes separate Expression, Gesture, and Gaze categories, and Avatar IV accepts short free-text motion prompts. D-ID provides explicit emotional states in its V4 Expressive Avatar workflow. Runway is the strongest option when you can demonstrate the desired performance in a video. Synthesia is designed around speech-driven delivery and source-performance quality rather than many manual expression switches.

Tool Primary control input What you can direct Best fit Main constraint
HeyGen Avatar V and Avatar IV Presets and short text prompts Facial expression, gestures, gaze, body language, and timed reactions Presenter clips, marketing, social content, and creators who want visible direction Custom motion prompts are documented for a maximum of 10 seconds; audio and the input image can outweigh the prompt
D-ID V4 Expressive Avatars Named sentiment in Studio or the /talks API Professional, Empathetic, Excited, Friendly, and Frustrated delivery states API-driven or Studio workflows that need repeatable emotional categories The facial-expression feature is documented for /talks, not Agents
Synthesia personal avatars Spoken content, script emphasis, and source recording Lip sync and facial expressions generated from speech; neutral body language for personal avatars Business training, explainers, and structured video production Fewer manual expression controls are exposed in the cited documentation; source expressiveness and framing affect the result
Runway character performance Reference-performance video Facial expressions and body movements transferred from the reference Creative work where the performer’s timing and physicality are the specification You must supply a suitable performance video instead of describing the performance only with text

These are documented workflow differences, not a universal ranking of realism. No neutral cross-vendor accuracy or realism benchmark is established in the cited material.

What expression, gesture, and gaze controls does HeyGen provide?

HeyGen is the clearest fit when you want to tell an avatar what to do in words and refine the result with visible controls. Its documentation separates facial expression from gesture and gaze, so you can direct more than a general “sound friendly” instruction.

Avatar V presets

Avatar V includes preset tabs for Expression, Gesture, and Gaze. Documented expression examples include calm, enthusiastic, serious, warm, confident, sincere, sad, and intense. Gaze options include looking at the camera or looking away. The categories make it easier to specify a delivery style without writing a long instruction.

Avatar IV motion prompts

Avatar IV accepts free-text motion prompts. HeyGen recommends keeping a prompt short and focusing on one visible movement, such as a brief smile, a serious look, or a glance away. Custom motion generation has a documented maximum duration of 10 seconds. After that interval, a longer scene may loop the motion or hold the last state, so a multi-minute presentation should be divided into deliberate segments rather than treated as one continuous custom performance.

Gesture Control recording

HeyGen’s Gesture Control guide describes a capture workflow for hyper-realistic avatars created from uploaded video footage. The recommended pattern is:

  1. Record the first 30 seconds in a neutral pose.
  2. Add about one gesture every two seconds.
  3. Return to neutral after each gesture so the system can separate movements.
  4. Capture up to 10 gestures, subject to the feature’s current limits.

This approach is useful when the exact hand movement or body reaction matters more than a text description. It also means you need suitable source footage; the feature is not simply a switch that adds arbitrary gestures to every avatar.

Why a good prompt can still produce a flat result

HeyGen’s troubleshooting guidance gives Avatar V this priority order: audio first, input-image expression second, prompt third. A flat voice track can therefore suppress an enthusiastic instruction, and a neutral source image can limit the visible range of expression. Use expressive audio and, where supported, a motion-reference video when the prompt alone is not producing enough movement.

How does D-ID’s named-sentiment control work?

D-ID’s V4 Expressive Avatar workflow is more categorical than HeyGen’s prompt-and-preset model. You select a sentiment, and D-ID uses that state to shape expressive delivery and the configured voice.

Sentiments available in the documented quickstart

The V4 Expressive Avatar quickstart lists Professional, Empathetic, Excited, Friendly, and Frustrated. This is useful when an application needs a small, stable vocabulary of emotional modes—for example, a professional explanation followed by an empathetic response—rather than arbitrary gesture choreography.

API behavior

The API returns a generated video after asynchronous processing. The selected sentiment is part of the generation request, so your application can assign a delivery state programmatically instead of asking a user to edit a prompt. The documented quickstart describes typical generation taking 1–5 minutes depending on video length; that is an operational estimate, not a guaranteed service-level time.

Studio availability and the Agents boundary

D-ID announced V4 Expressive Avatars in Studio on 4 February 2026, and the feature is also available through the API. However, D-ID’s help documentation states that facial-expression control is currently available through the /talks API and not through Agents. Check the exact product mode before you design an interactive workflow around sentiment controls; the presence of an expressive avatar in one D-ID experience does not imply that every D-ID product exposes the same controls.

How does Synthesia create facial expressions?

Synthesia takes a speech-driven approach. For personal avatars made from a photo, its documentation says lip sync and facial expressions are generated from the spoken content. Body language is neutral and designed around script pacing and emphasis, so the script and scene framing become the main expressive inputs.

Source recording matters

Personal-avatar creation supports webcam recording. Synthesia advises that a more expressive source recording can produce a more expressive resulting avatar. A clear webcam is therefore a capture aid, not a guarantee of better animation: lighting, framing, and the performer’s delivery still influence the source signal.

API families and rendering modes

Synthesia documents four API families:

  • Interactive Avatars: synchronous, streaming rendering for real-time conversations.
  • Video API: asynchronous generation of finished video files.
  • Upload API: uploading assets for the workflow.
  • Billing API: billing-related integration.

Choose Interactive Avatars when response latency and a live conversation are more important than rendering a finished file. Choose the Video API when you need a completed asset for review, editing, or distribution. Neither description should be read as a promise of manual emotion sliders; the cited personal-avatar documentation exposes speech and source-performance dependence instead.

How does Runway transfer a facial performance?

Runway’s documented character-performance workflow starts with a reference video. The performer supplies the expression, gaze, timing, and body movement, and the system transfers that performance to a character. This is fundamentally different from asking an avatar to infer “look concerned” from text or a sentiment label.

The developer API exposes POST /v1/character_performance with model act_two and API version 2024-11-06 in the cited documentation. Use this route when a filmed performance is the most precise specification of what should happen. It is particularly suitable for creative scenes where a subtle pause, asymmetric smile, or coordinated body movement would be difficult to describe reliably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is preparation: you need a reference video that demonstrates the intended performance. If you only have a script and no performer, a prompt- or sentiment-driven tool is usually a simpler starting point.

Which control model fits your project?

Start by deciding how you want to express direction. The following mapping prevents a common mistake: selecting a tool for visual quality before checking whether its control input matches your production process.

If your requirement is… Prefer this model Why
“Make the presenter look warm and glance at the camera.” HeyGen presets or a short motion prompt Expression and gaze are exposed as separate controls.
“Use the same empathetic state for many API-generated replies.” D-ID sentiment selection A named sentiment can be assigned in the documented V4 workflow.
“Reproduce this actor’s exact reaction and body timing.” Runway reference performance The video demonstrates the movement instead of relying on text interpretation.
“Create a polished training presenter from a script.” Synthesia personal avatar or video workflow Speech, pacing, and source footage drive the presentation.
“Hold a live conversation with an avatar.” A real-time avatar API, such as Synthesia Interactive Avatars Interactive rendering is documented as synchronous and streaming.

What source material do you need?

Source requirements are one of the fastest ways to eliminate an unsuitable tool. A tool that accepts text may require only an avatar selection and audio, while a performance-transfer workflow cannot work without reference footage.

How can you test expression control before committing?

Use the same short script and the same evaluation criteria across tools. The goal is not to declare a universal winner; it is to discover which control model gives your team predictable results with the material you can actually produce.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write a neutral test script. Use 20–30 seconds containing one factual sentence, one question, and one sentence that should sound reassuring. Avoid slang or unusually complex pronunciation.
  2. Define visible targets. Specify one expression, one gaze direction, and one gesture where the tool supports them. For a sentiment workflow, choose one named state. For a performance workflow, record the reference instead of describing it.
  3. Keep the input constant. Use the same voice style, framing, and avatar identity where the product allows it. Do not compare an expressive source recording in one tool with a flat audio track in another and call the result a model difference.
  4. Check timing. Note whether the expression begins when requested, holds too long, loops, or returns naturally to neutral. For HeyGen custom motion, test the 10-second boundary explicitly.
  5. Run a second take. A control that works once but drifts on a repeat may be unsuitable for a scripted series. Record whether audio changes produce different facial delivery.
  6. Review the production path. Measure human editing time, rendering delays, and whether your chosen API mode supports the interaction pattern you need. A visually good clip can still be impractical if every change requires manual intervention.

What are the common failure modes?

The avatar barely moves

First inspect the audio and source image. In HeyGen’s documented priority order, audio and input-image expression outrank the prompt. In Synthesia, expression is generated from spoken content, so a monotone recording and a neutral source can naturally produce restrained movement.

The motion repeats or freezes

HeyGen warns that custom motion longer than 10 seconds may loop or hold. Break a long scene into shorter motion beats and plan a neutral reset between them. This also makes it easier to correct one expression without regenerating an entire presentation.

The API has no expression parameter

Verify the product mode, not just the vendor name. D-ID documents facial-expression control through /talks, while its help page says Agents do not expose that feature. A real-time or agent product may therefore require a different design than an asynchronous video endpoint.

The gestures look poorly separated

For HeyGen Gesture Control, follow the recording pattern: neutral opening, roughly two seconds between gestures, and a return to neutral after each one. Crowding several movements together makes it harder for the system to identify their boundaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result does not match a written emotion word

Emotion labels are not interchangeable across tools. “Empathetic” in a named-sentiment system, “warm” in a preset list, and “look concerned” in a prompt represent different control abstractions. Test the exact language or sentiment your application will use rather than assuming a label transfers from one product to another.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How should you plan an API-based production workflow?

Separate the control decision from the rendering architecture. A sentiment or prompt can be easy to generate but still require asynchronous polling, while a live avatar may stream immediately but expose fewer expression controls.

For asynchronous finished video

D-ID’s V4 workflow returns a video after processing, and Synthesia’s Video API also generates finished files asynchronously. Design your application to store a job identifier, show a pending state, handle failure, and save the resulting asset with the exact sentiment, prompt, script, and source version used to create it.

For real-time interaction

Synthesia documents Interactive Avatars as synchronous and streaming. Keep the conversational layer separate from visual-style selection so you can change the avatar or delivery configuration without rewriting the dialogue system. Confirm which expression controls are exposed in the current interactive product before promising users that they can select emotions live.

For performance-driven scenes

Runway’s character-performance endpoint requires a reference video, so your asset pipeline should retain the original performance file and its consent records. Treat the reference as a production asset, not as an informal prompt that can be discarded after rendering.

Is there a universal “most realistic” avatar tool?

No. The available documentation establishes control methods and workflow constraints, but it does not provide an independent, cross-vendor realism score or accuracy statistic. Realism also depends on the source footage, voice delivery, framing, script, and whether the target is a short clip, a finished business video, a live interaction, or a transferred performance.

A fair evaluation therefore compares the same observable requirements: expression timing, gaze accuracy, gesture separation, repeatability, rendering mode, and the amount of manual correction. Report those observations rather than reducing the choice to a single realism label.

What should you know about cost, policy, and product changes?

Current prices, quotas, and plan limits are not established in the cited material and can change quickly. Check the vendor’s current plan and API documentation immediately before purchase, especially if your workflow depends on a maximum clip duration, asynchronous processing, or a particular API version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Obtain consent for personal-avatar recordings and follow each vendor’s current identity, voice, and usage requirements. The cited workflow pages describe how capture and generation operate; they are not a complete legal or ethical framework for every use case.

Which tool should you choose?

  • Choose HeyGen when you need the clearest combination of expression, gesture, and gaze controls and can work in short, deliberate motion segments.
  • Choose D-ID when named emotional states and API assignment are more valuable than fine-grained gesture choreography, and your implementation can use the documented /talks path rather than Agents.
  • Choose Synthesia when a script, speech delivery, and business-video workflow are central, or when you need documented real-time Interactive Avatars without expecting extensive manual expression controls.
  • Choose Runway when you can record the performance you want and need that facial and body timing transferred to a character.

The practical winner is the tool whose input matches the way your team can specify emotion: words and presets, named sentiments, spoken delivery, or a reference performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a text prompt and a reference video together?

The documented workflows treat these as different control models, and they do not establish a universal way to combine them. If a scene depends on precise performance timing, keep the reference video as the primary specification and test any additional text instruction for conflicts rather than assuming the controls will blend predictably.

How long does a D-ID expressive-avatar video take to generate?

D-ID’s V4 quickstart gives a typical asynchronous range of 1–5 minutes, depending on video length. Treat that as an operational estimate; queue load and future product changes can affect the actual wait.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a better webcam guarantee more expressive facial animation?

No. A clear webcam can improve the source recording used for a personal avatar, but expression still depends on the performer’s delivery, lighting, framing, script, and the avatar system’s animation model. Use a webcam as a capture aid, not as a guarantee.

Can I switch from a rendered avatar to a live avatar later?

Usually this requires checking the specific API family rather than changing one setting. Finished-video APIs and synchronous streaming APIs can have different controls, timing, and asset requirements, so prototype the interaction mode before building around a rendered-video workflow.
