Choose an AI assistant by matching its features to the work you actually need—not by assuming one tool is best at everything. Compare writing and editing workflows, current web research and inspectable citations, image understanding versus image generation, and the limits attached to your account. Product documentation describes what tools can do; it does not establish which assistant writes or researches best.
Start with the tasks you need to complete
List two or three specific jobs before comparing products. For example, you might need to revise a report, find up-to-date sources on a technical topic, interpret a chart you upload, or create a new illustration. Those are different tasks, and an assistant that handles one may not offer the workflow you need for another.
Use these comparison questions to narrow your shortlist:
- Writing workflow: Can it draft, rewrite, summarize, and help edit a document in a way that suits your process? How much control do you have over tone and format?
- Research freshness: Can it search the web, and does it support a multi-step research task?
- Evidence visibility: Does the result include citations or source links you can open and check?
- Image work: Do you need to analyze an uploaded image, generate a new one, or edit an existing image?
- Access and limits: Is the feature available on your plan, in your region, and in your account or workspace? What usage limits apply?
- Connected context: Does the assistant support the files or services you want to use, and are they available under your account settings?
Compare writing workflows, not claims of writing quality
Features such as drafting, rewriting, and interactive editing can make a writing workflow more convenient. They are not proof that one assistant produces better prose than another. OpenAI, for example, documents Canvas as a space for co-writing and editing, alongside capabilities for drafting and rewriting. Check the ChatGPT capabilities overview for the features OpenAI lists and the access conditions it describes.

Test candidates on the same representative draft rather than comparing marketing descriptions. Ask each one to make a concrete change—such as tightening a section without changing its meaning—and assess the result yourself.
- Did it preserve facts, names, and qualifications?
- Were the edits useful, or did you need to undo or rewrite them?
- Could it follow your preferred voice, structure, and formatting?
- How much cleanup did the result require?
This is a practical way to choose for your own work, not a controlled comparison or a universal ranking.
Check both web research and source visibility
Research involves more than finding recent material. You also need to see where important claims came from and verify that the sources support them. Fluent summaries are not evidence on their own: open the cited pages, check their dates, and confirm that they say what the assistant claims.

ChatGPT
OpenAI documents web search and Deep Research. It describes Deep Research as a way to investigate complex online tasks and produce a report with citations or source links. Google says Deep Research in Gemini Apps includes Google Search by default; users can select other sources and upload files. Google documents different model access and request limits: Pro and Ultra users can use the Pro model for reports, while all users can use Thinking. Daily and simultaneous-request limits apply, with higher report limits on higher tiers. Claude
Anthropic documents web search for grounding answers in current information. Its Research feature is a beta for individuals on paid Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plans, available on web, desktop, and mobile; web search must be enabled. Research can search the web and, when available, connected internal context such as Google Workspace. It uses the same conversation limits as regular Claude chats and can consume them faster. For any assistant, ask it to provide sources, then check the sources yourself. Confirm that each important claim is supported by the linked page and that the page is current enough for your decision.

“Image support” can mean different things. An assistant might interpret a chart or answer questions about an uploaded picture without generating a finished image. If you want a new illustration—or need an existing one edited—check that the product supports that specific operation.

- Create an image: Generate a new visual asset from a prompt.
- Edit an image: Modify an existing asset. Verify this separately; image input or generation alone does not establish that a particular editing workflow is available.
OpenAI lists both image input and image generation in its ChatGPT capabilities overview. Google’s listed Gemini features and usage depend on plan; check Google’s current limits and upgrades information and your own account for availability.

Anthropic’s Claude Help Center states: “Claude doesn’t generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do.” That statement addresses generating finished image assets; it does not mean Claude cannot discuss or help plan an image. See Can Claude produce images?.
Verify access and usage before you rely on a feature
Availability can vary with subscription, region, account settings, workspace configuration, and feature rollout. Usage caps can also matter: a feature may be available but unsuitable for a task if you cannot use it as often as needed. OpenAI says tool access depends on subscription level and settings; Google documents tiered access and additional usage for some media generation and Deep Research; Anthropic says Research is limited to eligible paid plans and shares Claude conversation limits.
Before paying or building a workflow around a feature, check its current official help page and confirm that the feature appears in your own account. Plan details and limits can change.

Use a short, task-based trial to make the decision
- Write down your real tasks. Choose examples such as revising a report, finding current sources, interpreting a chart, or creating an illustration.
- Check official feature pages and your account. Confirm support for each exact task, along with plan, region, workspace, and usage conditions.
- Run the same writing sample through your shortlist. Judge accuracy, voice, usefulness of edits, and the amount of cleanup—not just whether the assistant can produce a draft.
- Test research with a claim that matters. Ask for sources, open them, and check the claim against the cited pages and their dates.
- Test the exact image operation. Distinguish interpreting an upload from creating or editing an image.
- Decide whether one assistant is enough. If your preferred tool lacks a needed workflow, using another for a specific task—such as image generation or research—is a reasonable option.
