Choose an AI agent security platform by proving it can discover every agent and MCP connection, assign each a distinct identity, enforce least-privilege tool access, inspect prompts and tool calls at runtime, contain unsafe behavior, and produce evidence your auditors can verify. Do not select on a prompt filter or a feature checklist alone. Map your real agents, models, tools, data stores and outbound actions, then run a pilot containing prompt injection, poisoned retrieval content, unauthorized tool requests, privilege escalation, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, recursive tool use and high-impact approvals.
The right platform is the one that reduces blast radius and gives responders dependable control when an agent behaves outside policy. The sections below show how to evaluate that control, compare documented capabilities, and structure a procurement pilot.
What does an AI agent security platform need to control?
An agent security platform must protect an execution chain, not just the text entering a model. That chain includes the agent application, model provider, system prompts, retrieved content, memory, tools, MCP servers, credentials, data stores and external destinations. A useful platform connects policy to the exact action an agent is about to take.

Prompt and content risks
OWASP identifies direct and indirect prompt injection, tool abuse, privilege escalation, data exfiltration and memory poisoning as core agent risks. Indirect injection can arrive in a document, web page, repository, email or API response that the agent is asked to process. Controls should treat all such content as untrusted, validate it before use and prevent instructions in retrieved data from silently changing the agent’s authority.

Action and authorization risks
An agent can be tricked without producing obviously malicious text. A request to send an email, change a cloud policy, run code, delete a record or transfer funds is an authorization event. The platform should evaluate the proposed tool, parameters, destination, identity and business context before execution, and require a human decision for high-impact actions.
Governance and infrastructure
AWS groups the program into system design, secure development, security evaluation suites, input validation and guardrails, data security and governance, infrastructure security, threat detection and security posture management, and incident response. Government guidance from Canadian and partner agencies recommends verifying third-party components, maintaining an approved registry, restricting tools to an allowlist, logging tool use, separating agent roles, isolating high-risk agents and using layered guardrails.
Use those domains as the minimum scope of an evaluation. A platform that only scans prompts leaves identity, supply chain, runtime action and response gaps unaddressed.
How do I map my agents before comparing products?
Start with an inventory that is specific enough to answer “who can do what, to which data, through which path?” Discovery is a prerequisite for meaningful policy: an unlisted agent cannot be governed or revoked.
- List every agent. Include production, development, personal, embedded SaaS and “shadow” agents. Record owner, business purpose, model provider, version, deployment location and environment.
- Trace execution paths. Record system prompts, retrieval pipelines, memory stores, MCP servers, plugins, APIs, databases, file shares, queues and outbound network destinations.
- Record identities and secrets. Map service accounts, delegated user tokens, API keys, workload identities and where credentials are issued, rotated and revoked.
- Classify actions and data. Mark read, write, delete, publish, financial, administrative and safety-critical actions. Classify the data each step can access and export.
- Identify observation points. Note which calls traverse an endpoint, gateway, cloud control plane, proxy or network path that a candidate can actually inspect.
Ask vendors to demonstrate discovery against this inventory, including an unapproved agent and an MCP server added after deployment. “Coverage” should be reported by agent type, model provider, cloud, endpoint and network path, not as a single percentage.
Which capabilities should I score in an AI agent security platform?
Use a weighted scorecard that covers the complete lifecycle. Require a live demonstration and exported evidence for each high-weight item.

| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask | Evidence to require |
|---|---|---|
| Lifecycle | Does the platform protect design, build, deployment, runtime and response? | Architecture, policy workflow, deployment controls and incident records |
| Discovery | Can it find endpoint, cloud, SaaS, shadow-agent and MCP activity? | Inventory export, detection method, coverage limits and time to discovery |
| Identity and authorization | Are agent identities separate, credentials short-lived and permissions resource-scoped? | Identity model, RBAC examples, tool allowlists and revocation test |
| Runtime detection | Does it inspect prompts, retrieved content, tool calls, responses and data movement? | Detection rules, test traces and handling of false positives |
| Containment | Can it audit, block, quarantine, isolate, revoke or trigger a circuit breaker? | Fail-closed behavior, latency and recovery procedure |
| Evidence | Can you export tamper-evident logs and test results for audits? | Schema, retention, timestamps, actor identity and chain-of-custody controls |
| Integration | Does it connect to SIEM/SOAR/XDR, identity providers, clouds, endpoints and observability tools? | Supported versions, API limits and a working connector |
| Operations | What deployment effort, latency, tuning and change management are required? | Implementation plan, performance measurements and coverage-gap process |
Set pass/fail gates for non-negotiable controls (identity separation, deny-by-default permissions, parameter-bound approval and emergency revocation) before calculating a weighted score. This prevents a polished dashboard from compensating for a missing safety control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should agent discovery and MCP security include?
Discovery should show the relationship between an agent, its model, tools, MCP servers, credentials, data and destinations. For MCP specifically, inventory server identity, available tools, tool schemas, version, owner, hosting location and every client that can invoke it.
Shadow and supply-chain visibility
Require detection of agents deployed outside the approved registry and verification of third-party components used by an agent or MCP server. The platform should flag a new tool, changed schema, unpinned dependency or altered prompt package as a change requiring review.
Allowlisting and separation
Government guidance recommends an approved registry and tool allowlists. Test whether an agent can discover or call an unapproved tool, whether roles are separated so one agent cannot assume another’s privileges, and whether high-risk agents run in an isolated environment.
Change-driven testing
A new model version, tool parameter, retrieval source or credential scope can invalidate prior tests. Ask for integrations that trigger regression tests and approval workflows when those dependencies change.
How should identity and least privilege work for agents?
Give each agent a distinct, attributable identity and issue only the permissions needed for its current task. A shared administrator token makes both detection and revocation ineffective.

Credential controls
- Use short-lived credentials with automatic rotation and explicit audience, resource and action scopes.
- Bind delegated user authority to the specific agent, session and approved operation.
- Revoke a token or agent identity independently without disabling unrelated workloads.
- Record the human requester, agent identity, model session, tool, parameters and result in one audit trail.
Approval binding
Human approval must bind to exact parameters, destination, amount, records and expiration time. An approval to “send the report” must not be reusable for a different recipient or modified attachment. Test whether changing one parameter after approval causes a new decision or is silently accepted.
Deny-by-default scopes
Start with no tools, resources or outbound destinations, then add narrowly scoped permissions. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet states: “Grant agents the minimum tools required for their specific task.” Verify that the platform enforces this in the tool gateway or execution layer rather than merely documenting it.
How do runtime controls stop prompt injection and tool abuse?
Runtime protection should inspect both incoming content and the action an agent proposes. A text-only classifier cannot reliably determine whether a tool call is safe in context.

- Before model execution: inspect user input, system-policy conflicts and retrieved content for injection or sensitive data.
- Before a tool call: evaluate tool identity, parameters, destination, credential, data classification and policy.
- After a tool response: treat the response as untrusted, detect instruction smuggling or poisoned content, and prevent automatic propagation into memory.
- Before external output: check for data leakage, unauthorized recipients, unsafe code or policy violations.
Detection versus enforcement
Ask whether each rule supports audit and block modes, and whether a policy can fail closed when the control plane is unavailable. Measure added latency on normal and high-volume paths. Require explanations that show the content, tool, parameter and policy that caused a decision, while minimizing sensitive data exposure in the log.
Adversarial cases to run
- Direct instructions that attempt to override the system prompt.
- Indirect instructions embedded in a document, web page, repository, email or API response.
- Tool poisoning that changes a tool description or response to request a different action.
- Requests to exfiltrate secrets through a permitted tool or encoded output.
- Memory poisoning that causes a later session to trust attacker-controlled facts.
- Recursive or chained tool use that expands privileges or creates an uncontrolled loop.
What containment and incident response should I expect?
A platform is useful under attack only if it can stop execution and help responders understand what happened. Look beyond an alert count.
Immediate controls
- Block the current call or terminate the session.
- Quarantine the agent, MCP server, memory entry or retrieved artifact.
- Revoke credentials and disable an identity or tool binding.
- Trip a circuit breaker after repeated policy violations or anomalous volume.
- Reduce blast radius by isolating the workload, network path or data partition.
Investigation workflow
Logs should correlate prompt, retrieved item, model response, tool request, approval, tool result, identity, policy decision and outbound transfer with synchronized timestamps. Export the record to your SIEM or case system, preserve the original artifact, and show which actions were blocked versus merely observed.

Recovery and learning
Require a documented restore path: rotate affected secrets, remove poisoned memory, validate data integrity, replay the incident in a test environment and update policies. The platform should support regression tests so a rule change does not reopen the same path.

What evidence should vendors provide?
Marketing claims such as “AI-safe” are not a substitute for testable requirements. OWASP AISVS 1.0, released in June 2026, contains 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices; each requirement has verification level 1, 2 or 3. Use it as a procurement checklist and ask vendors to map controls and evidence to the relevant verification level.
Independent evidence is limited. The MIT 2025 AI Agent Index found that 25 of 30 studied agents disclosed no internal safety results, 23 of 30 disclosed no third-party testing information, and only 9 of 30 documented sandboxing or virtual-machine isolation. Treat disclosure quality as a scored risk signal, not proof that an undisclosed control does not exist.
- Request recent internal test suites, threat models and independent assessments.
- Ask for coverage by model, agent framework, tool protocol, cloud and deployment mode.
- Require residual-risk statements, known blind spots and conditions that disable enforcement.
- Verify log retention, export format, data residency, support response and incident-notification terms.
- Ask how a customer can reproduce a vendor claim in its own environment.
Which documented platform approaches are worth examining?
Public documentation illustrates different control points. These are examples to validate in a proof of concept, not independently benchmarked performance claims.
| Documented approach | What it shows | Questions for your pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender for Endpoint | Documents inspection of user prompts, pre-tool calls and post-tool responses, with audit or block decisions where supported. Agent-native hooks are documented for Claude Code, Codex CLI and GitHub Copilot CLI; network inspection covers additional supported paths. | Which versions and paths are covered? How do certificate pinning and HTTP/3 limitations affect your traffic? Is the feature still preview, and can blocks be enforced on every required endpoint? |
| Datadog AI Guard | Documented as an inline, defense-in-depth control integrated with Datadog tracing. Protections address prompt injection, jailbreaks, tool misuse and sensitive-data exfiltration through prompt, tool and sensitive-data features. | Is your account eligible, what latency is added, and which frameworks and tool calls are intercepted? Can traces be exported with approval and response context? |
| CrowdStrike’s agent-security approach | Describes lifecycle coverage spanning known and shadow-agent discovery, supply-chain protection, continuous agent identity, runtime monitoring and containment. | Which capabilities are available in your region and deployment model? Can the pilot demonstrate identity revocation, isolation and evidence export rather than only inventory? |
Confirm current availability, preview status and coverage directly with each vendor. A documented hook is valuable only when it reaches your actual agent, model, endpoint and network path.

- Define success criteria. Set pass/fail thresholds for discovery, deny-by-default permissions, parameter-bound approval, blocking latency, revocation time, log completeness and residual-risk reporting.
- Build the test inventory. Include at least one agent per framework, model provider, cloud, endpoint and risk tier, plus an unapproved shadow agent and MCP server.
- Load realistic data. Use representative retrieval stores, documents, repositories, emails, APIs and sensitive fields with synthetic values where necessary.
- Execute attack scenarios. Run direct and indirect prompt injection, poisoned retrieval content, unauthorized tools, privilege escalation, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, recursion and high-impact actions.
- Test enforcement modes. Compare audit, block, quarantine, revoke and isolation. Simulate a control-plane outage to verify fail-closed behavior or document an accepted exception.
- Measure operations. Record detection precision, false positives, added latency, analyst workload, time to revoke, time to investigate and coverage gaps.
- Export evidence. Require complete event records, policy versions, approvals, test outputs and a machine-readable report suitable for audit.
- Repeat after change. Upgrade a model, alter a tool schema, add a retrieval source and rotate credentials, then verify that regression tests and approvals trigger.
How should I score candidates and make a procurement decision?
Use a two-stage decision. First reject any candidate that fails a mandatory safety gate. Then score the survivors on effectiveness and operational fit.
| Stage | Decision rule |
|---|---|
| Mandatory gates | Complete inventory; distinct agent identities; deny-by-default tool scopes; short-lived credentials; parameter-bound approval; runtime inspection of tool calls; emergency revoke or block; exportable correlated logs. |
| Effectiveness | Detection and blocking across your attack set, coverage by path, isolation strength, false-positive rate and recovery workflow. |
| Operational fit | Deployment effort, latency, integrations, analyst workflow, policy versioning, support and change-triggered testing. |
| Assurance | Independent validation, AISVS mapping, test reproducibility, residual-risk disclosures and audit evidence. |
| Commercial and regional fit | Pricing, licensing minimums, geography, data residency, support tier and current product availability, verified in writing. |
Do not fill unknown cells with assumptions. Record “not stated in public documentation” and make the vendor answer it during the pilot. Keep a written exception register for controls you accept as compensating measures.
What common selection mistakes create avoidable risk?
- Buying a prompt filter alone: it may miss tool abuse, identity misuse and exfiltration through an allowed channel.
- Ignoring shadow agents: policy coverage appears high while unregistered automation remains invisible.
- Using broad service accounts: one compromised agent can reach unrelated systems and is difficult to revoke safely.
- Approving intent instead of parameters: an attacker can alter recipient, amount, query or file after a generic approval.
- Testing only clean prompts: indirect injection and poisoned tool responses are more representative of agent workflows.
- Accepting audit-only controls: an alert after a destructive action does not reduce blast radius.
- Skipping failure-mode tests: a platform may stop enforcing when a proxy, certificate path or control service is unavailable.
- Overlooking data residency and retention: security telemetry can contain prompts, secrets or regulated data.
- Treating preview features as guarantees: verify release status, supported versions and documented limitations before contract signature.
What is the practical decision rule?
Select the platform that gives your organization a complete, revocable map of agent execution and demonstrably enforces least privilege at the moment of action. It should inspect untrusted content and proposed tool calls, bind approvals to exact parameters, isolate high-risk workloads, produce correlated evidence and support rapid blocking and recovery. If a candidate cannot demonstrate those controls on your own tools and data flows, defer procurement or document the residual risk rather than relying on a broad safety claim.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an existing SIEM or endpoint product replace an AI agent security platform?
It can provide useful telemetry and response integration, but coverage depends on whether it sees model prompts, retrieved content, MCP calls and tool parameters. During the pilot, verify that your existing controls can enforce deny-by-default permissions and parameter-bound approvals, not merely collect alerts.
Should every agent run in a sandbox or virtual machine?
Isolation is especially important for agents that execute code, handle untrusted content or can affect production systems. Use risk-based tiers, but require a documented boundary, restricted network access and a tested escape or revocation procedure for any agent that is not fully isolated.
How often should agent security tests be repeated?
Repeat them whenever a model, prompt, tool schema, MCP server, retrieval source, credential scope or policy changes. Schedule periodic regression runs as well, because attack behavior and vendor coverage can change without an application release.
What latency is acceptable for inline agent controls?
There is no universal threshold: interactive coding, batch processing and high-impact approvals have different tolerances. Measure p50 and p95 overhead on your real paths, then set separate service objectives for allowed calls, blocked calls and human-approval waits.
How do I handle an agent that must access sensitive data?
Minimize the fields and actions exposed, tokenize or redact where possible, and keep sensitive operations behind a separate identity and approval policy. Log access and outbound transfer with retention and residency settings that match the data’s regulatory requirements.
