Choose an AI agent platform by the unit it bills—not by its headline seat price. The useful comparison is the complete meter: users, actions, conversations, requests, voice seconds, traces, compute units, storage, and data-grounding events. Then check what is included, what happens at the limit, how private-data access is charged, and whether administrators can see and cap consumption.

A platform is genuinely transparent when you can estimate a representative task before deployment, monitor live usage, and enforce a defined budget without silently changing behavior. The figures below show how four major platforms expose those controls and where their pricing models can surprise you.

What makes AI agent pricing transparent?

Transparent pricing lets you translate a business workflow into billable units and forecast a monthly range. A price such as “$5 per user” is only a starting point if the user can launch hundreds of metered actions or requests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evaluate transparency across seven dimensions:

  • Billing unit: identify whether the meter is a user, action, conversation, request, voice second, trace, compute unit, storage unit, or another event.
  • Allowance and reset: record the included quantity, the plan period, and whether unused capacity rolls over.
  • Overage behavior: determine whether usage continues on pay-as-you-go billing, slows down, pauses, or blocks new runs.
  • Grounding and storage: separate public-data answers from retrieval against private tenant data, indexed documents, and retained traces.
  • Deployment scope: check which channels, environments, tenants, and production features are included.
  • Administration: look for real-time dashboards, per-user or per-agent limits, alerts, approval controls, and exportable audit records.
  • Cost composition: establish whether model inference, hosting, voice, observability, support, and storage are bundled or billed separately.

Ask the vendor to price one representative task end to end. The answer should state how many billable units that task normally creates, not merely quote a unit rate.

Which billing units should you compare?

Different meters suit different workloads. A conversation price is easy to explain to a contact-center buyer, while an action or request meter can track the actual work an agent performs. Trace and storage meters matter when observability is a production requirement.

Meter What it usually counts Best question to ask Main risk
User or seat A licensed person or account during a billing period Does the seat include runtime, or only access to build and administer agents? A low seat fee can conceal substantial execution charges.
Action A discrete function an agent executes, such as calling a tool or updating a record What qualifies as one action, and how many actions does a typical task trigger? Multi-step workflows can consume many units for one user request.
Conversation A defined interaction session, often in a digital channel When does a conversation start and end, and are retries counted? Long or multi-agent sessions may cost the same as or more than expected.
Request An API or orchestration request handled by the service Does one end-user task create multiple requests? Retries, routing, and tool calls can multiply requests.
Voice second Connected audio duration Are silence, transfers, and failed calls billable? Talk time is variable and hard to cap without duration controls.
Trace An observed execution or span recorded for debugging Are all traces retained, and what happens after the included quantity? Verbose tracing and long retention increase both usage and storage.
Compute or storage unit Provider-defined processing or retained-data consumption What workload produces one unit, and is the rate fixed? Usage is less intuitive until you benchmark a real workflow.

How do the leading platforms expose price and usage?

The following models use different meters, so their prices are not directly interchangeable. Convert each one to the cost of your own workflow before selecting a plan.

Salesforce Agentforce: actions, conversations, and user licenses

Salesforce lists Salesforce Foundations at $0, Flex Credits at $500 per 100,000 credits, Conversations at $2 per conversation, and an Agentforce User License at $5 per user per month. Salesforce describes an action as a specific function an agent executes and says each action draws from a shared Flex Credit pool. Digital Wallet provides real-time consumption insights.

The published action rates are 20 Flex Credits for an Agentforce action and 30 Flex Credits for an Agentforce Voice action. At the listed Flex Credit price, one credit is $0.005. If a hypothetical workflow used 1,000 non-voice actions and no included credits, it would consume 20,000 credits, or $100. That is a planning calculation, not a promise that every task uses one action.

Conversation billing is a different meter: 500 conversations at $2 each would be $1,000. A buyer must therefore establish whether the intended channel is priced per conversation, per action, or through a user license, and whether the same interaction can incur more than one of those charges.

  • Use the action model when work varies significantly by task and you can instrument the number of functions invoked.
  • Use the conversation figure for a channel where sessions are predictable and easy to count.
  • Include voice separately because each voice action uses 30 rather than 20 Flex Credits.
  • Require a Digital Wallet view or equivalent export so finance can reconcile actual consumption with the forecast.

Microsoft Copilot Studio: feature-level Copilot Credits

Microsoft sells Copilot Studio in 25,000-Copilot-Credit packs priced at $200 per pack per month and also offers pay-as-you-go billing. That pack rate works out to $0.008 per credit when the full pack is purchased.

Microsoft Learn defines the meter by feature: a classic answer uses 1 Copilot Credit, a generative answer 2, an agent action 5, and tenant graph grounding 10. These distinctions are valuable because they expose why two apparently similar answers can have different costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an illustrative workflow that produced one generative answer, two agent actions, and one tenant graph grounding event, the arithmetic would be 2 + 10 + 10 = 22 credits. One thousand such workflows would consume 22,000 credits, or $176 at the $200-per-25,000-credit pack rate, assuming all activity fit within that pack and no other charges applied.

Microsoft distinguishes agents using included public data from metered agents that access shared tenant data. Treat private-data grounding as a separate cost driver during design. Most importantly, Microsoft documents that exhausting prepaid capacity can block new runs. Confirm this enforcement behavior for your licensing arrangement before putting a customer-facing agent on a prepaid plan.

LangSmith: seats plus traces, compute, and storage

LangSmith’s Developer plan is $0 per seat per month for one seat and includes up to 5,000 base traces per month. The Plus plan is $39 per seat per month, includes up to 10,000 base traces per month, and adds deployment features. Enterprise pricing is custom.

LangChain’s calculator lists $1.50 per LangChain Compute Unit (LCU) and $1.00 per LangChain Storage Unit (LSU). Your actual bill depends on the agent’s work and the volume and retention of traces. A free seat therefore does not mean unlimited production execution or unlimited observability.

LangSmith is a useful benchmark when you want deployment and observability costs visible beside seat costs. During a pilot, record trace volume per completed task, the retention period, and compute and storage units generated by the same task. Then compare the measured profile with the included 5,000- or 10,000-trace allowance rather than assuming every seat has the same runtime cost.

Google Cloud Conversational Agents: request, duration, and index storage

Google Cloud prices chat Flows at $0.007 per request and chat Playbooks at $0.012 per request. Voice Flows cost $0.001 per second, while Voice Playbooks cost $0.002 per second. Google also lists 10 GiB of data-store index storage free per month, followed by $5 per GiB per month.

For eligible new users, Google lists free-trial credits of $600 for Flows and $1,000 for Playbooks. Treat those as trial allowances, not recurring production discounts.

The request and duration meters are straightforward to model. For example, 10,000 chat Flow requests at $0.007 would be $70. However, one end-user task can generate multiple requests through planning, retrieval, tool calls, or retries. Measure requests per completed task before multiplying the per-request rate by user volume.

How do I model the monthly cost before deployment?

Build the forecast from observed workflow behavior, then apply the vendor’s meter and enforcement rules. A spreadsheet is sufficient if each assumption is explicit.

  1. Define the unit of work. Write one sentence such as “resolve one support ticket” or “complete one employee travel request.” Do not start with monthly users; start with completed tasks.
  2. Map every billable event. Count answers, agent actions, tool calls, grounding lookups, requests, voice seconds, traces, compute units, and storage produced by that task.
  3. Measure a realistic sample. Run representative easy, average, and difficult cases. Record retries, handoffs, failed tool calls, and human escalations rather than only the happy path.
  4. Apply the published rate. Multiply each event count by the relevant rate. Keep separate lines for seats, runtime, voice, grounding, storage, deployment, and support.
  5. Model the allowance. Subtract included units for the billing period before calculating paid overage. State whether the allowance is monthly, one-time, or trial-only.
  6. Test high and low scenarios. Create a conservative case with more actions or requests and a quiet case with less traffic. Include seasonal peaks and a retry assumption.
  7. Validate with an invoice or usage export. After a pilot, compare forecast units with the platform dashboard. Investigate any difference before committing to a longer term.

A compact formula is:

monthly cost = fixed seats or platform fees + Σ(event count × event rate) + grounding/storage/voice charges − included allowances

Do not merge unlike meters into one “per user” estimate. A user who submits ten short requests and a user who submits one complex, multi-action request may have very different costs.

What usage controls prevent an agent from overrunning the budget?

Price visibility is not enough; the platform must give administrators a way to observe and stop runaway work. Require controls at both the account and workflow levels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a hard boundary, not only an alert

Use a monthly spend cap, prepaid capacity limit, or maximum run count where available. An email alert is useful, but it does not prevent a loop from consuming the remaining budget overnight. Ask whether the cap pauses the agent, blocks new runs, or merely reports usage.

Limit work per run

Set maximum tool calls, planning iterations, retrieval results, conversation turns, and voice duration. A bounded agent should return control to a person when it reaches a limit instead of continuing indefinitely.

Separate production from experimentation

Use distinct projects, tenants, or billing accounts for development, testing, and production. Otherwise a prompt experiment or verbose trace setting can consume the same allowance as customer traffic and make cost attribution difficult.

Require approval for expensive actions

Place human approval before actions that create financial commitments, send large batches, alter records, or trigger external services. Approval gates reduce both accidental spend and the operational impact of a misinterpreted instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor the right dimensions

A useful dashboard shows spend and units by agent, environment, user, channel, task type, and day. Include failure and retry counts, because a low success rate can produce more billable events than successful work.

Retain an audit trail

Store the request or case identifier, model or agent version, tools called, grounding source, units consumed, and final outcome. This lets finance reconcile an invoice and lets engineering identify the workflow change that caused a cost jump.

How do private data, storage, and deployment channels change the bill?

Public-data answers and private-tenant grounding are not interchangeable. A platform may include general web or public knowledge while metering retrieval from shared tenant data, a graph, indexed documents, or a connected business system.

Ask these questions for every data source:

  • Is indexing charged, and is there a free storage allowance?
  • Is each grounding lookup a billable event or included in another unit?
  • Are embeddings, index refreshes, and retained documents priced separately?
  • Does a larger tenant or more frequent synchronization increase the meter?
  • Are development and production indexes billed independently?

Google’s published Conversational Agents rates illustrate why storage belongs in the same model as runtime: 10 GiB of data-store index storage is free per month, then storage is $5 per GiB per month. Microsoft’s Copilot Studio rates illustrate the other side: tenant graph grounding is explicitly 10 Copilot Credits per event, while public-data agents are distinguished from metered tenant-data agents.

Deployment channels also affect cost and scope. Confirm whether web chat, messaging, contact-center voice, internal copilots, APIs, and test channels share the same allowance. A plan that is inexpensive for internal users may have a different meter when exposed through a public application.

What happens when the included capacity runs out?

Never sign a plan until the exhaustion path is written down. The same allowance can have very different operational consequences depending on the provider.

Exhaustion behavior Operational result What to verify
Pay-as-you-go overage Runs continue and the invoice grows Is overage enabled by default, and can it be capped?
Throttling Runs continue more slowly or at a reduced rate What latency and queue limits apply?
Pause or block New requests fail until capacity is added or the period resets What error does the user see, and can a fallback route be configured?
Feature degradation The agent may answer without a tool, grounding source, or voice feature Is the fallback safe and clearly disclosed?

Microsoft documents that prepaid Copilot Capacity exhaustion can block new runs. Other platforms may continue with overage billing, so obtain a platform-specific statement rather than assuming one behavior applies everywhere. Build a notification and fallback procedure for the final 10% of capacity, not only for a zero balance.

Feature-level accounting for answers, actions, and tenant grounding Microsoft Copilot Studio Copilot Credits distinguish common response types and tenant graph grounding. Will prepaid exhaustion block a mission-critical run, and how much private-data grounding is needed?
Observability and deployment alongside seat pricing LangSmith Trace allowances and published LCU and LSU rates make runtime visibility part of the buying decision. How many traces, compute units, and storage units does a production task generate?
Simple request or voice-duration forecasting Google Cloud Conversational Agents Flows and Playbooks publish per-request and per-second rates, with a stated index-storage allowance. How many requests are created per task, and how much index storage will the data estate need?

This is a fit framework, not a universal ranking. The least expensive unit rate can lose once your workflow creates more events, uses private grounding, retains detailed traces, or requires voice and deployment features.

What should I ask in a pricing and controls review?

Send vendors the same written questionnaire so answers can be compared without marketing assumptions:

  1. What exactly counts as one billable unit, including retries, failed calls, parallel tool calls, and handoffs?
  2. How many units does a representative easy, average, and complex task consume?
  3. Which allowances reset monthly, which are one-time, and which expire?
  4. Are model inference, orchestration, hosting, voice, grounding, storage, observability, deployment, and support bundled or separate?
  5. What is the regional price, currency, tax treatment, and contract term?
  6. What happens at 80%, 90%, and 100% of capacity?
  7. Can administrators set hard budgets, per-agent limits, approval gates, and maximum run duration?
  8. Can usage be exported with timestamps, agent identity, task identifier, and meter detail?
  9. Are private tenant-data lookups priced differently from public-data answers?
  10. What changes when the agent is moved from a test tenant to a production channel?

Put the answers and assumptions in the order form or an attached service description. A dashboard that cannot be reconciled to an invoice is not sufficient cost control.

What are the most common pricing mistakes?

Comparing seat prices as if they were total cost

A $0 or low-cost seat can coexist with action, request, trace, grounding, storage, or voice charges. Build the task-level model first and treat seats as the fixed component.

Ignoring tenant-data grounding

Private data often introduces a distinct meter or index cost. Price the data architecture, not just the conversational interface.

Leaving overage behavior to a verbal promise

Capacity exhaustion can mean a growing invoice or blocked runs. Capture the exact enforcement rule and configure a fallback before launch.

Forgetting observability and retention

Detailed traces improve debugging but can consume trace and storage allowances. Decide which environments need full traces and how long they must be retained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using trial credits in a recurring forecast

Free-trial credits, such as the published Google Cloud allowances for eligible new users, are temporary. Exclude them from the steady-state business case.

How often should pricing assumptions be revisited?

Recalculate after any change to prompts, tools, retrieval sources, model routing, channel mix, trace retention, or agent autonomy. Recheck the live regional price sheet before signing because prices, quotas, and included features can change.

Keep a dated baseline containing task volume, event counts, allowances, rates, and exhaustion behavior. That record turns a future invoice variance into a measurable workflow change instead of a pricing mystery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one customer message create more than one billable event?

Yes. A single message may invoke planning, retrieval, several tools, a retry, and an observed trace before the response is returned. Ask the vendor for an event breakdown from a completed task rather than relying on the message count shown in the user interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a prepaid plan safer than pay-as-you-go for a first launch?

Prepaid capacity makes the maximum planned spend easier to communicate, but it can interrupt service when exhausted. Pay-as-you-go preserves continuity but needs a hard budget, alerts, and an owner who can respond to unusual consumption.

How can I detect a runaway agent quickly?

Alert on rate of units per task, not only on the monthly total. A sudden increase in actions, requests, retries, voice seconds, or grounding events often appears before the account reaches its spending threshold.

Do free tiers cover private knowledge-base use?

Not necessarily. A plan may include seats or a basic response allowance while charging separately for tenant-data grounding, index storage, synchronization, or retained traces. Confirm each data operation in the meter definition.
