Choose the platform that can give every agent a distinct, accountable identity; enforce narrowly scoped permissions across all connected tools; isolate sessions, tenants, memory and execution; require approval for consequential actions; and produce tamper-resistant, exportable evidence of what happened. Treat vendor documentation as a feature claim, not proof. Validate the configured tenant, exact product edition and region, connected systems, and operating procedures with scenario tests before granting broad autonomy.
The right choice depends on your use case, threat model, existing identity stack, data boundaries and ability to monitor and revoke access. A platform that looks strong in one console can still create excessive effective access through chained tools or leave investigators without the context needed to reconstruct an incident.
What must an AI agent platform prove before you buy it?
Require evidence for five decisions: identity, authorization, containment and approvals, audit evidence, and operational fit. Score each in the architecture you will actually deploy rather than accepting a feature checklist.
Identity
Each agent needs a unique, attributable identity, an accountable sponsor or owner, and a lifecycle that supports creation, review, disabling and revocation. Record whether an action came from the agent’s own identity or was delegated on behalf of a user. Those are different accountability paths and should remain distinguishable in logs and policy.

Authorization
Permissions must be narrow, enforceable and changeable for individual tools, actions and resources. Inspect effective access across connected services, APIs, data stores and downstream agents; the role displayed in one administration console is not the complete permission set. Confirm that a credential, token or grant can be removed promptly without waiting for a long cache or manual process.
Containment and approvals
Look for isolation between sessions and tenants, controls on memory and context, safe tool execution, and policy gates for consequential actions. Human approval should be available when an action is difficult to reverse, financially material, privacy-sensitive or operationally destructive. An approval prompt by itself is not a security boundary against a manipulated agent.
Audit evidence
Logs should identify the agent, initiating authority, session or correlation identifier, action and tool, target resource, authorization result and outcome. High-risk events also need the relevant policy decision and approval context. Check export formats, retention controls, access protection, alerting, time synchronization and whether an agent or its administrator can alter the evidence.
Operational fit
Assess policy administration, identity integrations, incident response, credential rotation, deployment and data-location constraints, and connections to your existing monitoring and governance systems. The platform must fit the people and processes that will review alerts and revoke access, not merely the team that builds the first agent.
How should an agent’s identity be designed?
Use a dedicated identity for each production agent or agent instance where practical, with ownership and purpose recorded in an inventory. Avoid personal credentials and shared service accounts: they make attribution ambiguous and leave access behind when an employee changes role.
Separate agent identity from user delegation
An agent can act as itself, act with a user’s delegated authority, or combine both models. Your policy should state which operations require the user’s current authority and which are permitted to the agent independently. A log that says only “user Jane approved” is incomplete if the agent used a different standing credential to perform the operation.
Require ownership and lifecycle controls
For every agent, record a sponsor, technical owner, business purpose, data classification, connected tools, credential locations, expiry or review date, and decommissioning procedure. Test disablement at the identity provider, platform, gateway and target systems. A platform that can disable an agent in its own console but leaves active API keys elsewhere does not provide complete revocation.

Check identity-provider integration
Determine whether the platform supports your workforce identity provider, workload identities, conditional access, strong authentication for administrators and separate administrator roles. Verify how service-to-service authentication works for agent chains and whether each hop preserves the original user and agent identities.
How do I evaluate permissions and least privilege?
Start with the smallest set of tools, operations and data scopes needed for one workflow, then expand only when a failed task demonstrates a legitimate requirement. OWASP’s DevSecOps guidance summarizes the principle as: “The guiding principle is least agency: give the agent only the autonomy, tools, and access its task requires, for only as long as it needs them.”
Map effective access, not displayed roles
Build an access graph covering the agent, its runtime, tool connectors, APIs, databases, file stores and downstream agents. Include inherited roles, group membership, OAuth scopes, network paths and secrets available to the runtime. Ask the platform to show a machine-readable view of this graph or export enough data for your own analysis.
Prefer action-level controls
A connector that grants an entire application role may be too broad even when the agent uses one endpoint. Look for allowlists of commands, methods, repositories, records or fields; deny rules for destructive operations; and conditions based on resource, environment, time or user risk. Ensure those controls are enforced server-side rather than expressed only in the prompt or system instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse temporary privilege for exceptional work
Workflows that occasionally need elevated rights should request a time-limited grant with a stated purpose, approver and expiry. Confirm that the privilege automatically disappears, that outstanding tokens are invalidated, and that the elevation and subsequent actions are linked in the audit trail.
Test chained and indirect access
An agent may reach a sensitive system through another agent, a general-purpose code tool or a data export. Attempt paths that are not visible in the primary agent’s role. Your review is incomplete if it checks only direct API permissions.
What containment and approval controls are necessary?
Containment limits the damage when an agent is misled, compromised or simply makes a bad decision. Evaluate isolation and approvals as separate controls: isolation limits what can be reached, while approval determines whether a high-impact action may proceed.

Session, tenant and execution isolation
Verify that one customer, project or conversation cannot read another’s context, files, memory or tool results. Check whether code execution uses a separate sandbox, what outbound network access is allowed, whether temporary files persist, and how secrets are exposed to tools. Ask how the platform handles concurrent sessions and retries so that a replay cannot cross boundaries.
Memory and context controls
Determine where conversation history, retrieved documents, tool output and long-term memory are stored, who can query them, and how they are deleted. Treat external content as untrusted input: an instruction embedded in a document, web page or ticket should not be able to change authorization policy or reveal hidden context.
Approval gates for consequential actions
Define a policy category for actions such as changing production configuration, deleting records, sending regulated data, transferring money or communicating externally as the organization. The gate should display the exact operation, target, parameters, initiating user, agent identity and policy reason. Require an authenticated approver and bind the approval to that specific request so it cannot be reused for a different action.
Safe failure and rate limits
Check what happens when a tool times out, returns malformed data or is unavailable. The secure default is to stop or limit the action, not to retry indefinitely with broader permissions. Set quotas, concurrency limits, destination allowlists and circuit breakers for agents that can create records, send messages or invoke expensive services.
Which fields must audit logs contain?
A useful audit trail lets an investigator reconstruct who or what initiated an action, what the agent attempted, which policy applied, what changed and whether it succeeded. Request sample events, not screenshots, and inspect the schema for missing or optional fields.

|---|---|---|
| Identity | Agent identifier and version, owner or sponsor, initiating user or workload, delegated-authority indicator | Separates agent behavior from a person’s direct action and supports accountability. |
| Session context | Session, request and correlation identifiers; tenant or project; timestamps with time zone or synchronized clock | Connects prompts, tool calls, approvals and retries across services. |
| Action and target | Tool or API name, operation, sanitized parameters, target resource and data classification | Shows exactly what was attempted without unnecessarily recording secrets or sensitive payloads. |
| Authorization | Policy version, decision, scopes or conditions evaluated, elevation reference and approval identity where applicable | Explains why the platform allowed or denied the operation. |
| Outcome | Success, denial or error; downstream response code; records changed; retry and rollback information | Distinguishes an attempted action from an effective change. |
| Protection and operations | Export status, retention policy, access to the log, alert rule that fired and any administrative change | Shows whether evidence was preserved and who could view or alter it. |
Check integrity and administrator separation
Ask whether logs are append-only or cryptographically protected, whether administrators can delete or edit events, and whether those administrative actions generate separate records. The agent and its ordinary operator should not be able to erase evidence of their own activity.
Verify export, retention and alerting
Confirm supported export formats, streaming or scheduled delivery, retention configuration, search limits and integration with your security information and event management system. Retention must match legal, contractual and incident-response needs; no universal duration is established by the available guidance. Test alerts for denied access, privilege changes, unusual tool sequences, cross-tenant attempts and disabled agents continuing to call APIs.

How should I compare platform options?
Use the same evidence request and test plan for every candidate. The examples below show how different services describe relevant building blocks; they are not a like-for-like benchmark or a ranking.
| Comparison axis | Questions for the vendor and your test tenant | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Identity model | Can each agent instance have a unique identity, sponsor, owner, version and disable state? Are user delegations preserved end to end? | Identity records, lifecycle API responses and sample sign-in or configuration events. |
| Permission enforcement | Can you restrict individual tools, methods, resources and fields? Are aggregate permissions visible across chains and connectors? | Policy exports, denied-call events and effective-access graph. |
| Isolation | How are sessions, tenants, memory, files, code and network egress separated? | Architecture description and results of cross-session and cross-tenant attempts. |
| Approvals | Can policy require authenticated, request-bound approval for specified operations? | Approval request, decision, expiry and resulting action linked by correlation ID. |
| Audit | Do events include identity, authority, target, policy, outcome and administrative changes? Can logs be exported and protected? | Raw event samples, schema, export test and retention settings. |
| Revocation | How quickly can access, tokens and credentials be removed across every connected system? | Timed revocation exercise, token invalidation result and residual-call report. |
| Integration and constraints | Does it fit your identity provider, monitoring stack, data residency, network and deployment model? | Integration diagrams, regional availability and operating-responsibility matrix. |
Examples of documented approaches
Microsoft Entra Agent ID documentation describes unique identities for agent instances, sponsors and owners, blueprint-level policy application, and monitoring for sign-ins and configuration changes. Treat these as product capabilities and recommendations that still require validation in your tenant.

How do I run a proof before expanding autonomy?
Use a bounded pilot with synthetic or low-sensitivity data and representative connectors. Record configuration, product version, region, policy changes and test results so a later review can reproduce the outcome.
- Inventory the workflow. List the agent, sponsor, users, tools, data stores, downstream agents, credentials, network paths and actions that can change state.
- Set a minimum policy. Allow only the required operations and resources. Add explicit denies for destructive or high-risk actions and define which events need approval.
- Attempt unauthorized tool use. Ask the agent to invoke a disallowed method, access another team’s data, use an unapproved destination or call a tool through a chain. Verify server-side denial and a complete event.
- Attempt cross-session access. Seed two isolated sessions with distinct markers, then try to retrieve the other marker through prompts, memory, retrieval and tool output. Check for leakage in responses and logs.
- Test prompt injection. Put conflicting instructions in an external document or ticket and confirm the agent treats them as data, cannot alter policy and cannot reveal hidden context or credentials.
- Exercise high-impact approval. Request a consequential operation, inspect the approval details, approve once, then alter a parameter or target and confirm the original approval cannot be replayed.
- Revoke access. Disable the agent, remove a connector grant and rotate its credential. Attempt calls with existing sessions and tokens; document how quickly each path stops working.
- Export and investigate. Export the events and reconstruct one complete workflow using only the exported data. Note missing identities, timestamps, policy context, outcomes or administrative changes.
- Stress failure paths. Simulate a timeout, malformed tool response, duplicate request and downstream outage. Confirm retries do not broaden privileges and that partial changes are visible.
- Approve a bounded rollout. Define success criteria, residual risks, monitoring ownership, review frequency and a rollback trigger before connecting production data.
What operating model keeps controls effective?
Assign responsibilities across security, identity, platform engineering, application owners and the business sponsor. The platform team may configure policy, but data owners should approve access and incident responders must be able to suspend the agent without waiting for the builder.
Maintain an agent registry
Track purpose, owner, sponsor, version, environments, data classes, tools, permissions, approval rules, credential locations, last review and retirement date. Reconcile the registry with identity-provider and gateway records to find orphaned or stale agents.

Monitor behavior, not just sign-ins
Alert on unusual tool sequences, new destinations, sudden increases in denied calls, privilege changes, repeated approval requests, access outside normal hours and activity after disablement. Pair behavioral alerts with configuration-change monitoring so an attacker cannot quietly weaken policy.
Plan incident response
Document a kill switch, token and key rotation, connector revocation, memory and session invalidation, evidence preservation and communication steps. Practice the procedure with a non-production agent; an emergency plan that has never been tested can leave access active during containment.
Review data and deployment boundaries
Confirm where prompts, tool results, memory, logs and backups are processed and stored; which subprocessors can access them; and whether your contractual or regulatory boundaries permit that flow. Record regional, network and offline requirements as selection criteria rather than discovering them after deployment.

What common buying mistakes should I avoid?
- Confusing a feature with enforcement. A toggle or documentation statement does not prove that every connector and downstream system honors the policy.
- Using one broad identity. Shared credentials destroy attribution and make selective revocation difficult.
- Trusting prompts as controls. Instructions can be manipulated; authorization must be enforced by the platform, gateway or target service.
- Ignoring aggregate access. Individually modest grants can combine into a path to sensitive data or destructive actions.
- Logging only the final answer. Without tool calls, policy decisions and outcomes, investigators cannot determine what changed.
- Allowing self-administered evidence. An agent or its administrator should not be able to silently edit or delete its own audit trail.
- Skipping revocation tests. Cached tokens, long-lived keys and downstream grants can survive a console-level disablement.
- Comparing marketing checkboxes. Product version, plan, region, configuration and operational responsibility can change what is actually available.
- Granting autonomy before ownership is clear. An agent without a sponsor, review date and retirement path becomes unmanaged infrastructure.
What should the final procurement scorecard contain?
Make each requirement testable and attach an owner, evidence type and pass condition. A concise scorecard can include:
- Unique agent identity, sponsor, owner, inventory record and disablement path.
- Clear distinction between agent authority and user-delegated authority.
- Tool, action, resource and data-scope restrictions enforced outside the model prompt.
- Aggregate permission analysis across connectors, APIs, stores and agent chains.
- Session, tenant, memory, code and network isolation appropriate to the threat model.
- Request-bound, authenticated approval for defined high-impact actions.
- Audit fields for identity, authority, correlation, target, policy, approval and outcome.
- Protected, exportable logs with configured retention, alerting and administrative-change records.
- Fast revocation, credential rotation and evidence of residual-access checks.
- Compatibility with identity, monitoring, governance, deployment and data-residency requirements.
- Completed scenario tests using the intended configuration and documented residual risks.
NIST NCCoE’s February 2026 publication is a draft concept paper seeking input for a possible project, not a final standard or a buyer certification. Use it as a prompt for questions about identification, authentication, authorization, auditing, non-repudiation and prompt injection, then base the purchase decision on your own configured tests and risk acceptance process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all agents need separate identities, or can a team share one service account?
Separate identities are preferable for production agents because they preserve attribution and enable selective disablement. If a shared account is unavoidable during a transition, document the limitation, add strong correlation data at the gateway, narrow its scopes, and set a dated plan to replace it.
How often should an agent’s permissions be reviewed?
Set the interval according to data sensitivity, change rate and regulatory obligations, then trigger an earlier review after a new connector, owner change, privilege elevation or security incident. Reviews should compare the registry with actual grants and recent tool activity, not merely confirm that a policy still exists.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can an audit log contain full prompts and tool payloads?
Sometimes, but unrestricted capture can expose credentials, personal data or regulated content. Define field-level redaction and minimization rules, store sensitive details in a separately protected system when investigators truly need them, and verify that redaction does not remove the identifiers needed to prove what happened.
Is a single enterprise agent platform required for every use case?
No. Organizations may use different runtimes or gateways when data boundaries, latency, deployment location or application controls differ. A common identity, policy and evidence model is more important than forcing every workflow onto one product.
