Choose the platform that lets your team connect a bad outcome to the exact agent steps that caused it, turn that incident into a repeatable test, and enforce the test before the next release. For most teams, that means requiring hierarchical traces, trajectory-aware evaluation, offline regression datasets, sampled online scoring, human review, and CI/CD quality gates—not just a dashboard of model latency and token counts.
Then compare deployment and data controls, framework interoperability, reviewer workflow, exportability, and the billing meter at your expected volume. LangChain captures the core problem: an agent run can complete without an error while still returning a wrong result. A useful platform makes that silent failure visible and verifiable.
What is an AI agent observability and verification platform?
An AI agent observability and verification platform records how an agent reached an answer and tests whether that behavior was acceptable. It combines telemetry (what happened) with evaluation (whether it was good enough) and a workflow for fixing recurring failures.

A conventional LLM log may show a prompt, completion, latency, and token count. An agent trace must show the whole execution tree: the supervising agent, delegated agents, retrieval operations, tool choices and arguments, retries, state changes, conversation history, policy checks, and the final response. Verification then scores one or more levels of that tree.

Why the final answer is not enough
An agent can produce a fluent response after selecting the wrong tool, using stale retrieval context, omitting a handoff, or silently retrying with a different argument. If you inspect only the final text, you cannot tell which decision failed or reproduce it. The platform should let a developer jump from a score or reviewer comment to the exact span, input, output, and metadata that produced it.
What “verification” covers
Evaluators can run on a single model call or tool span, an entire trace, a multi-step trajectory, a user session, or a dataset of cases. Deterministic rules catch known conditions such as forbidden tools or missing fields. Embedding and similarity checks measure semantic relationships. LLM-as-a-judge evaluators estimate qualities such as groundedness or task completion. Human reviewers handle ambiguous or high-impact cases. No single evaluator is sufficient for every failure mode.
Which capabilities should be non-negotiable?
Set these requirements before comparing products. A platform that lacks one of them may still be useful for basic logging, but it will not support a durable quality loop for complex agents.
Hierarchical, complete traces
- Parent-child relationships for the application request, agent runs, model calls, retrieval, tools, and custom code.
- Inputs and outputs for every span, including tool arguments and returned data.
- Handoff identity: which agent delegated, to whom, with what context and instructions.
- Retries, exceptions, timeouts, policy violations, and fallback paths.
- Token usage, model identifiers, latency, cost metadata, and timestamps.
- Conversation and session identifiers so multi-turn behavior can be analyzed without flattening separate users together.
Ask a vendor to display one real multi-agent request, not a synthetic single prompt. If the UI hides child spans or stores only the final response, it cannot explain trajectory failures.
Multiple evaluator types
Require deterministic code checks, embedding-based checks, LLM judges, and human annotation. Deterministic evaluators are cheap and repeatable; judges cover nuanced criteria but add model cost and can drift; human review supplies context but does not scale to every run. The product should record evaluator versions, prompts, model choices, scores, rationales, and the trace each result belongs to.
Versioned datasets and experiments
When a production incident is found, you should be able to save a safely redacted input, expected behavior, and relevant metadata as a versioned dataset item. Run that dataset against two prompt or model versions, compare per-case and aggregate scores, and retain the experiment history. Dataset versioning prevents a moving test set from making an old regression appear fixed.
Online evaluation and operations
Offline tests cannot capture every production condition. Look for evaluators that run on live traces with filters, traffic sampling, historical backfill, monitors, alerts, and annotation queues. LangSmith documentation describes online evaluators that provide real-time feedback on production traces, can filter runs, sample traffic, and backfill historical runs. Confirm the exact limits and retention in the current plan you would buy.
From failure to release gate
The shortest useful path is: trace → score or human finding → dataset case → evaluator or rubric → regression experiment → CI/CD gate. The platform should expose APIs or exports for each transition. Without that path, teams collect dashboards but repeatedly rediscover the same defect.
Security, privacy, and governance
- Field-level redaction before data leaves your application or region.
- Configurable retention and deletion, including child spans and derived evaluations.
- Role-based access, reviewer assignment, and an audit history of annotations and score changes.
- Documented data residency and subprocessors for managed service deployments.
- API access and export in a format you can archive or migrate.
Trace payloads often contain customer messages, retrieved documents, credentials accidentally included in tool arguments, or regulated data. Treat observability data as production data, not harmless debug output.
How is AI agent observability different from LLM observability?
LLM observability focuses on model calls; agent observability must explain a changing plan across tools, agents, state, and turns. LLM telemetry is a component of agent telemetry, not a substitute for it.

| Question | LLM-focused telemetry | Agent-focused observability |
|---|---|---|
| What is traced? | Prompt, completion, model, tokens, latency | Those fields plus retrieval, tools, handoffs, retries, state, and application code |
| What is evaluated? | Response quality, safety, format, or relevance | Tool choice and arguments, trajectory, delegation, grounding, task success, and session outcome |
| Typical failure | Hallucinated or poorly formatted text | Wrong plan, unauthorized action, bad tool input, lost context, or a successful-looking but incomplete task |
| Useful test unit | Prompt/completion pair | Span, full trace, trajectory, session, and versioned dataset |
Some products use “LLM observability” as an umbrella term and add agent features. Verify the actual trace schema and evaluator scope rather than relying on the label.
Which platforms fit common team situations?
There is no universal winner. Start with your existing frameworks, operating model, data requirements, and the quality loop you can staff.
| Platform | Potential fit | Verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| LangSmith | LangChain or LangGraph teams needing integrated traces, evaluations, review, and automation | Production-volume cost, portability of platform-specific datasets and feedback, and the self-hosting tier |
| Langfuse | Teams seeking open-source or self-hosted tracing, prompts, datasets, experiments, and evaluations | Operating burden, retention, evaluator cost, and feature parity between cloud and self-hosted editions |
| Arize Phoenix | OpenTelemetry/OpenInference teams wanting self-managed tracing and evaluation | Production scale, alerting and monitoring depth, and how much lifecycle assembly your team must build |
| Braintrust | Evaluation-first teams comparing datasets, experiments, scorers, and CI/CD results | Data-plane deployment, score meters, and production trace retention |
| Datadog Agent Observability | Organizations already standardized on Datadog APM, logs, infrastructure, security, and cost telemetry | AI-specific evaluator depth, SaaS-only constraints, and billing for LLM spans |
| W&B Weave or Comet Opik | Teams invested in those ecosystems or looking for additional open or self-managed options | Current agent-trajectory support, online evaluation, and deployment capabilities |
When an integrated framework product is sensible
LangSmith is a natural shortlist item when your agents already use LangChain or LangGraph and you want tracing, evaluation, review, and automation in one workflow. The trade-off is possible coupling to its dataset and feedback formats, so test export and migration before committing.
When open or self-managed deployment matters
Langfuse and Phoenix are candidates when you need more control over hosting or want OpenTelemetry/OpenInference-based instrumentation. Self-hosting transfers responsibility for upgrades, storage, availability, authentication, backups, and evaluator workers to your team. Estimate that operating work rather than treating “open source” as zero cost.
When evaluation is the center of gravity
Braintrust is aimed at teams that organize work around datasets, scorers, experiments, and CI/CD results. Confirm how production traces are retained and where the data plane runs, then test whether its score model matches your evaluator volume.

Datadog Agent Observability can reduce context switching for organizations already using its APM, logs, infrastructure, security, and cost telemetry. How ecosystem listings should be interpreted
NVIDIA’s AI-Q Blueprint lists Phoenix for local trace visualization, LangSmith for LLM evaluation and prompt optimization, Weights & Biases Weave for experiment tracking and model monitoring, and OpenTelemetry Collector for production infrastructure and enterprise redaction. Treat such listings as starting points, not proof that every component covers your workflow end to end.
How should you compare deployment and data controls?
Decide where traces may live and who can access them before you compare dashboards. A managed service is often fastest to start; hybrid or self-hosted options may be required for residency, regulated data, or network isolation.
Managed SaaS
Managed hosting reduces installation and maintenance work, but your security review must cover storage locations, subprocessors, support access, deletion behavior, and whether prompts or traces are used for service improvement. Ask how quickly a deletion request propagates to indexes, datasets, exports, and evaluator caches.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHybrid or enterprise self-hosted
These models can keep sensitive payloads inside your network while sending limited metadata to a control plane. Clarify which components are actually self-hosted, how upgrades are delivered, and whether online evaluators require outbound model calls.

Open-source self-hosting
Open components provide maximum control and portability, but you own scaling, storage lifecycle, incident response, and authentication integration. Define service-level objectives and a backup strategy before putting production traces in a community deployment.
Redaction and retention design
Redact secrets and personal data at instrumentation time where possible. Then apply platform retention rules by environment: short-lived raw payloads, longer-lived aggregate metrics, and durable, minimized regression cases. Ensure redaction does not remove the fields your evaluators need to judge a task.
How important are interoperability and portability?
Interoperability determines whether you can change frameworks or vendors without losing the history needed to debug quality. Prefer OpenTelemetry or OpenInference support, documented OTLP ingestion, broad language coverage, and import/export APIs.
Recommended Free Tools
- Trace fidelity: parent-child relationships and cross-agent context survive ingestion and export.
- Framework coverage: your orchestration libraries, model providers, retrieval systems, and custom tools can be instrumented consistently.
- Schema stability: evaluator and dataset APIs are versioned, with documented changes.
- Exit path: raw traces, annotations, datasets, and experiment results can be exported in usable formats.
Run an export test during the proof of concept. A CSV of final scores is not a migration plan if it omits trace IDs, evaluator versions, inputs, and reviewer history.
How do these platforms charge, and how should you model cost?
Compare the meter, not the headline plan. Current comparison material shows materially different units: some products count traces or seats, others combine traces with observations and scores, processed data with scores, LLM spans, or ingested spans and data.
| Cost component | Questions to calculate |
|---|---|
| Ingestion | How many requests, spans, tokens, and gigabytes will be retained each month? |
| Evaluation | Which online and offline scores invoke a paid model, and are retries or backfills counted again? |
| Retention | What is included, and what is the price for longer raw-trace or experiment storage? |
| Users and reviewers | Are seats, annotation assignments, or role types metered? |
| Data transfer and self-hosting | Will exports, cross-region traffic, databases, and operational staff add cost? |
Build a monthly estimate from your own traffic: requests per day, average spans per request, payload size, retention days, sampled percentage, evaluator calls per trace, and expected backfills. Recalculate after the proof of concept because agent traces can be much larger than single-call logs.
What proof of concept reveals whether a platform will work?
Use representative multi-agent traffic, not a toy prompt. The following sequence tests the complete quality loop.
- Instrument one end-to-end request. Include at least two agents, retrieval, a tool call, a retry, and a handoff. Use real or safely redacted data.
- Inspect the hierarchy. Confirm parent-child relationships, inputs and outputs, tool arguments, token usage, latency, errors, and metadata are present and searchable.
- Create a versioned dataset. Save a small set of representative cases, including one known failure, with sensitive fields removed or masked.
- Run offline evaluators. Apply deterministic checks and an LLM judge to two prompt or model versions. Review individual traces, not only aggregate scores.
- Enable sampled online evaluation. Filter production runs, sample traffic, and route low-scoring or policy-sensitive cases to a review queue.
- Exercise human operations. Assign reviewers, apply a rubric, record disagreements, and verify that annotation history is auditable.
- Close the loop. Convert one observed failure into a regression case and enforce it in your CI/CD system. Confirm a failing score blocks or flags the release as intended.
- Test controls and deletion. Verify redaction, retention, export, API access, alerting, and deletion of a trace and every derived record.
- Calculate actual cost. Use the candidate’s meter with the measured trace and evaluator volume, including backfills and retained datasets.
What questions should you ask each vendor?
Use the same written checklist for every demonstration so feature names do not hide different behavior.
- Can you show a trace with nested agents, retrieval, a failed tool call, a retry, and a handoff?
- Which fields are captured automatically, and which require custom instrumentation?
- Can an evaluator inspect the full trajectory and session context, or only one model span?
- How are evaluator prompts, models, code, and thresholds versioned?
- Can production traces be filtered, sampled, backfilled, alerted on, and sent to an annotation queue?
- Can a reviewer turn a trace into a dataset item without copying data manually?
- What APIs export raw traces, scores, datasets, experiments, and human annotations?
- Which hosting, residency, retention, redaction, and access-control options are available in the edition being quoted?
- What exactly is counted for billing, and how are retries, backfills, and evaluator calls metered?
- What happens when an evaluator model or prompt changes? Can you compare scores across versions?
What common mistakes make an observability project fail?
Most failures are process or instrumentation failures rather than missing charts.

A polished trace viewer does not prove that you can create regression tests or enforce release gates. Require the end-to-end proof of concept before selecting a product.

Logging only the final response
Without tool arguments, retrieval context, handoffs, and retries, reviewers cannot identify the causal step. Instrument the orchestration layer and custom tools, not just the model SDK.

Enterprise already standardized on a telemetry suite
Evaluate Datadog Agent Observability alongside an AI-specific option. The operational advantage is strongest when on-call teams already live in the same APM, log, security, and cost workflows; the risk is discovering that evaluator depth or data controls do not match agent requirements.
OpenTelemetry-first engineering group
Prioritize products that preserve OTLP and OpenInference semantics, then test cross-agent parent-child relationships and export. Phoenix is a natural candidate, but verify how much dataset, review, and release-gate plumbing you must assemble.
How should you operate the platform after launch?
Assign ownership before deployment. Observability without an owner becomes an expensive archive.
- Instrumentation owner: maintains schemas, redaction, sampling, and framework integrations.
- Evaluation owner: curates datasets, calibrates judges, and reviews score changes.
- Service owner: responds to alerts and links incidents to traces.
- Release owner: maintains CI/CD thresholds and approves exceptions.
- Security or privacy owner: audits access, retention, residency, and deletion.
Start with a small set of high-value tasks and explicit success criteria. Expand coverage only after reviewers can explain failures and the release gate has demonstrated that it catches a real regression without blocking harmless changes.
What is the practical decision rule?
Select the platform that passes five tests with your own traffic: it captures every consequential step, supports the evaluator mix your team can maintain, turns incidents into versioned regression tests, satisfies your deployment and privacy controls, and has a cost meter you can forecast. If two products pass, prefer the one with the cleaner export path and the lower operational burden for your team.
Revalidate capability, hosting, pricing, and partner terms immediately before purchase. Vendor-authored comparison pages are useful for building a shortlist, but only current documentation, a security review, and the proof-of-concept can establish that a feature works for your agents.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much production traffic should we send to an AI observability platform?
Begin with full capture for a controlled test environment and a small, representative production sample. Add deterministic rules that always retain high-risk actions, policy violations, user complaints, and failed transactions, then increase sampling only when storage and evaluator costs are understood.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I use OpenTelemetry alone to verify an AI agent?
OpenTelemetry can transport standardized telemetry, but it does not by itself provide datasets, judge prompts, reviewer workflows, or CI quality gates. You still need an evaluation and case-management layer that understands agent trajectories and links scores to trace IDs.
How do I know whether an LLM judge is reliable?
Create a labeled calibration set with human decisions, run the judge repeatedly, and measure agreement by failure type rather than relying on one aggregate score. Recheck agreement whenever you change the judge model, rubric, or prompt, and keep deterministic checks for rules that must never be ambiguous.
What should be retained when privacy rules limit raw trace storage?
Keep the minimum fields needed to reproduce and score a task: stable identifiers, tool and model metadata, redacted inputs and outputs, evaluator versions, and reviewer decisions. Store sensitive payloads separately under your existing retention policy, with a controlled reference rather than copying them into every experiment.
When is a general observability suite a poor fit for agents?
It is a poor fit when it records model spans but cannot show handoffs, tool arguments, retrieval context, trajectory-level scores, or a path from a production failure to a CI regression case. In that situation, retain the general suite for infrastructure telemetry and add an agent-focused evaluation layer.
