Choose a VPN with split tunneling by deciding first which traffic you want routed through the VPN and which should bypass it, then verifying that the provider’s app supports that rule on your exact device and operating system. “Split tunneling” is not one universal control: providers may offer app, IP address or subnet, hostname, or URL rules, and the available modes can differ by platform. Check DNS behavior, protocol limits, app exceptions, and kill-switch compatibility separately before relying on a particular setup.
What does split tunneling do?
Split tunneling lets you direct some network traffic through a VPN while other traffic uses your ordinary internet connection. The result depends on the VPN app’s rule type and whether you choose to include selected traffic in the tunnel or exclude it.
For example, an app-based rule can apply to a selected application. A destination-based rule, such as an IP address or subnet, can apply to connections to that destination from multiple applications. A provider may also offer hostname or website rules, but those are not interchangeable with app or IP rules. Confirm what the app actually matches before assuming that a setting covers a particular program, site, or type of connection.
Split tunneling is useful when you need different traffic to take different routes. The trade-off is that you must understand which traffic is covered by each rule: a setting that excludes one application is not necessarily the same as a setting that bypasses one destination for every application.

Which split-tunneling rule type should you choose?
Start with the traffic you need to route differently. Then check that the provider offers the matching rule type and the direction you need—include selected traffic in the VPN or exclude it.
| Rule type | What it selects | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Application | A selected application’s traffic. | Whether the platform supports app selection, and whether the app provides include mode, exclude mode, or both. |
| IP address or subnet | Traffic to a specified IP address or network range, potentially from more than one application. | Supported address families, accepted subnet formats, and whether the rule includes or excludes the destination. |
| Hostname or domain | Traffic matched to a hostname or domain, depending on the implementation. | How the provider defines a match and whether it supports hostname rules on your platform. |
| Website or URL | A website or URL-based selection, if the provider explicitly offers it. | Whether the feature matches a URL, a hostname, or some other destination identifier. Do not assume URL rules exist because a provider supports split tunneling generally. |
Application rules are usually the most direct fit when your goal is to route one program differently. Destination rules are the better fit when traffic to a particular address or subnet should be treated alike across applications. If you need both kinds of control, confirm that the same client supports both; providers and platforms do not expose identical controls.
How can you check that a VPN supports your device?
Check the provider’s current support documentation for the exact operating system, device type, and app—not just a general feature page or a claim that the VPN “has split tunneling.” Feature availability can differ among desktop, mobile, TV, and Linux clients, and even between clients for the same operating system.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Name your device and client. Record the operating system, device type, VPN app version, and how you obtain the client. If you use Linux, check the distribution as well as the operating system family.
- Find the provider’s split-tunneling documentation. Look for a page that names your platform and describes the actual rule controls. A feature page that lists several platforms may not mean every platform has every rule type.
- Match the rule to your use case. Confirm whether the client offers app, IP/subnet, hostname, or URL selection, and whether it supports the direction you need.
- Check constraints and exceptions. Look for required protocols, affected app frameworks, DNS handling, and kill-switch behavior. These settings may not follow the route you expect from the split-tunnel rule alone.
- Confirm the details in the installed app. If the documentation and client do not agree, do not assume the feature works on your setup. Check the current support page for your app version or ask the provider before depending on it.
Linux deserves particular care: a provider may support a graphical client only on named distributions. Similarly, a provider’s mobile and desktop apps may offer different rule types. The operating system name alone is not enough to establish compatibility.

How do the documented provider examples differ?
The following examples show why the specific client matters. They describe features and limitations stated in the providers’ documentation; they are not independent performance tests or a ranking of which VPN is best overall.
| Provider | Documented split-tunneling details | What to verify for your setup |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Documentation describes include and exclude modes on Windows and Android. Its macOS support is described as experimental and limited to excluding apps. The documented feature works with WireGuard and Stealth, not IKEv2. The Linux GUI feature is limited to listed official distributions, and the instructions require restarting selected apps after connecting. Kill-switch compatibility differs by platform. | Check your operating system, Linux distribution, protocol, and kill-switch combination. On the documented Linux setup, follow the instruction to restart selected apps after connecting. |
| AmneziaVPN | Its documentation lists app and IP/subnet routing on Android and Windows. Its listed iOS, macOS, and Linux clients support IP-based rather than app-based split tunneling. Its IP/subnet implementation supports IPv4, not IPv6. | Confirm that your platform offers the rule type you need, and do not expect its IP/subnet rules to cover IPv6. |
| Windscribe | Its feature page describes app rules and IP/hostname rules, with inclusive and exclusive modes. It says ROBERT or the configured custom DNS service is used system-wide while connected, including for apps excluded from the VPN tunnel. | Check which DNS service is configured and account for system-wide DNS behavior when deciding whether excluded apps meet your needs. |
| IVPN | Its FAQ lists support on Windows, Linux, and Android, and describes inverse app-based tunneling on Windows and Linux. It says URL-based split tunneling is not offered. | If your workflow depends on a URL rule, do not treat IVPN’s app-based controls as a substitute for URL-based selection. |
| ExpressVPN | Its desktop support page describes app-based selection on Windows, Mac, and Linux. It says DNS queries should go through ExpressVPN servers regardless of split-tunneling settings. | Confirm the current details for your exact operating system and app version, and account for the stated DNS behavior. |
AmneziaVPN defines its implementation as a feature that lets users choose “IP addresses/subnets and apps that should either use the VPN tunnel or bypass it.” That description is specific to its documented implementation, not a universal definition of what every VPN’s split-tunneling control can do.
Why should you check DNS separately?
A split-tunnel rule describes traffic routing, but it does not by itself establish where DNS requests go. DNS behavior is provider- and app-specific, so check the provider’s explanation instead of assuming that DNS follows an excluded app’s ordinary connection.
The documented examples illustrate the distinction. Windscribe says its ROBERT or configured custom DNS service is used system-wide while connected, including for apps excluded from the VPN tunnel. ExpressVPN says DNS queries should go through its servers regardless of split-tunneling settings. Those statements describe those providers’ documented behavior; they should not be generalized to other VPNs.

When reviewing documentation, look for whether DNS follows the VPN, uses a provider DNS service, or is affected by the split-tunnel rule. If the provider does not clearly explain DNS handling for your platform, treat that behavior as unconfirmed rather than inferring it from the app-selection screen.
What protocol and app limitations can change the result?
A feature may be available only with particular VPN protocols or may behave differently for applications that share networking components. Read protocol and app-specific notes as compatibility requirements, not as minor details.
Proton VPN documents that its split-tunneling feature works with WireGuard and Stealth, but not IKEv2. It also notes WebKit-related behavior on macOS. If your intended setup uses a different protocol or relies on a WebKit-based app, check the provider’s current explanation before choosing a VPN or assuming the rule will apply as expected.
Also look for instructions about when to launch or restart an application. Proton’s Linux instructions, for example, require restarting selected apps after connecting. A rule that is configured correctly may still not affect an application in the way you expect if you skip a platform-specific step in the provider’s instructions.

Will the kill switch work with split tunneling?
Do not assume that a VPN’s kill switch behaves identically with and without split tunneling. Proton VPN documents different kill-switch compatibility by platform, so check the combination for your operating system rather than relying on the feature’s general availability.
Before relying on a particular configuration, verify whether the provider says the kill switch can remain enabled with your chosen routing mode. If the documentation does not address that combination, ask the provider or test the behavior in a non-critical situation before depending on it. Do not treat silence in the feature description as confirmation of compatibility.
What should you do if a rule does not work as expected?
First check whether the rule type and platform match your intention. Then revisit protocol, DNS, app exceptions, and any required restart or connection steps documented for that client.
- The whole app seems to use the wrong route: Confirm that your client has app-based rules on this platform and that you selected the intended include or exclude mode.
- A destination behaves differently in different apps: Check whether you set an app rule when you needed an IP, subnet, or hostname rule that applies across applications.
- The rule seems to miss an address: Confirm the provider’s supported address family and rule format. AmneziaVPN, for example, documents IPv4 support—not IPv6—for its IP/subnet implementation.
- DNS behavior does not match the app route: Review the provider’s DNS documentation separately. System-wide DNS behavior may still apply to excluded apps.
- The feature is unavailable or disabled: Check the operating system, client type, Linux distribution, protocol, and app version against the provider’s current support information.
- An app does not appear affected after connecting: Check for app-specific notes and required restart steps; Proton’s Linux instructions say to restart selected apps after connection.
What is the best way to make the final choice?
Choose the VPN whose documented client matches your actual routing need—not simply the one with the broadest feature label. A useful shortlist should establish the rule type, platform availability, DNS behavior, protocol requirements, app exceptions, and kill-switch compatibility for one specific setup.

- Write down which application or destination should use the VPN and which should bypass it.
- Choose the rule type that can target that traffic accurately, including whether you need an include or exclude mode.
- Confirm the named rule type exists in the provider’s client for your operating system and device.
- Check DNS, protocol, app-framework, and kill-switch notes for that platform.
- Use the provider’s current instructions and verify the configured behavior before relying on it for important traffic.
Official provider documentation reviewed for these examples does not establish comparative speed, reliability, or overall superiority. It can establish what a provider says its own clients support, but that is not the same as an independent performance result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does split tunneling make a VPN faster?
It may change which traffic uses the VPN, but the provider documentation cited here does not publish a comparable speed result or establish a guaranteed performance improvement. Treat speed as something to evaluate for your own connection rather than a benefit you can infer from the feature label.
Can I use split tunneling to choose websites instead of apps?
Only if the VPN client explicitly supports a destination rule that matches what you mean by a website, such as a hostname or URL. Providers distinguish these controls, and IVPN says its documented feature does not offer URL-based split tunneling.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIs split tunneling available on every Linux VPN app?
No general Linux support claim establishes support for every distribution or client. Proton VPN limits its documented Linux GUI feature to listed official distributions, while other providers describe their own platform-specific support.
Does split tunneling hide traffic from my internet provider?
Traffic sent through the VPN and traffic that bypasses it take different routes, so do not assume a bypassed connection has the same routing or privacy characteristics as tunneled traffic. Check the provider’s documentation for what the rule routes, and avoid treating split tunneling as a blanket privacy setting.
