Choose a text-to-speech voice by matching the script’s language and locale first, then judge accent, intelligibility, vocal character, and available style controls. Keep speaking rate close to the engine default until you audition representative passages; speed up only when comprehension stays high, and slow down for accessibility, dense terminology, or language learning. Select MP3 or Ogg for ordinary web and mobile delivery, WAV or PCM for editing and mastering, and μ-law or A-law for telephone systems. Finally, verify the provider’s sample-rate, bit-depth, channel, container, and bitrate requirements—these settings differ by service and are not universal TTS standards.
How do I choose a text-to-speech voice?
Start with language and locale, not with whether a voice sounds “pleasant.” A voice trained for the script’s language, regional pronunciation, and intended audience is easier to understand and less likely to mispronounce names, dates, and technical terms. Google Cloud says its voices vary by language, gender, and accent, while Amazon Polly requires a specific voice ID and offers multiple choices for many languages (Google Cloud Text-to-Speech basics; Amazon Polly documentation).
1. Match the language and locale
- Choose the exact language code when the provider distinguishes regional variants, such as British and American English or European and Brazilian Portuguese.
- Use a voice that natively supports the script’s language rather than relying on an approximate accent.
- For multilingual content, check whether one voice supports language switching or whether your application must switch voices between segments.
- Test proper nouns, abbreviations, dates, currencies, and product names in the target locale. A voice that handles ordinary sentences well may still read these items incorrectly.
2. Evaluate intelligibility before personality
Record or synthesize the same representative passage with several candidate voices. Include short sentences, a long sentence with punctuation, numbers, acronyms, names, and the most technical terms in your project. Listen on the devices your audience actually uses: laptop speakers, a phone, inexpensive earbuds, and any assistive listening setup. A distinctive voice is useful only if listeners can understand it without concentrating.

| Decision factor | What to listen for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Accent and regional pronunciation | Vowel sounds, rhythm, and local names | Signals the intended audience and prevents distracting pronunciations. |
| Clarity | Consonants remain distinct at normal volume and through a phone speaker. | Reduces listener effort and transcription errors. |
| Vocal character | Warmth, energy, age impression, and formality | Should fit the subject rather than compete with it. |
| Style or speaking mode | News, conversational, cheerful, serious, or other available styles | Useful when the provider exposes style controls; availability is voice-specific. |
| Gender selection | Whether the service exposes a gender category and whether it is appropriate for your audience | Gender labels and available voices vary by provider and language. |
| Consistency | Stable pronunciation and tone across paragraphs | Important for courses, audiobooks, navigation, and long-running applications. |
4. Audition a repeatable test set
- Create a 30- to 60-second script containing your hardest names, numbers, punctuation, and domain vocabulary.
- Render that script with each candidate voice at the same output format and approximate default rate.
- Score intelligibility, pronunciation, naturalness, emotional fit, and consistency separately instead of choosing on one memorable sentence.
- Repeat the test after adding the SSML pronunciation and pause controls your production will use. A voice that sounds best in plain text may react differently to markup.
- Keep two finalists and test them with representative listeners or a small internal review group. Ask listeners to identify words they missed, not merely which voice they prefer.
5. Check operational constraints
A voice is also an engineering choice. Confirm language and locale coverage, SSML support, speaking-rate range, latency, streaming behavior, output encodings, file-size limits, and licensing or operating cost before committing. A beautiful voice that cannot stream quickly enough, cannot pronounce your product names, or cannot be licensed for your distribution channel will create rework later.

What speaking rate sounds natural for TTS?
Begin near the provider’s normal setting, then tune by comprehension and timing rather than by a universal words-per-minute target. Human listeners tolerate different rates depending on language, vocabulary, voice, audio quality, and familiarity with the subject. Google Cloud documents speaking-rate control, and Google’s product information describes adjustment of up to four times faster or slower than normal; that is a provider capability, not a recommendation to use the extremes.
Use rate as a comprehension control
| Content or audience | Starting approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| General narration or short announcements | Stay close to the engine default and make small changes. | Preserves natural phrasing while meeting the expected duration. |
| Time-constrained instructions | Increase rate only after listeners can repeat or follow the information accurately. | Shorter audio is valuable, but missed words defeat the time saving. |
| Accessibility content | Try a slower setting and provide user-controlled playback speed where possible. | Extra processing time can improve comprehension. |
| Dense technical or legal material | Slow enough to separate clauses, lists, and unfamiliar terms. | Pauses and articulation matter more than fitting a target duration. |
| Language-learning material | Use a deliberately slower rate for new vocabulary, then offer a normal-rate version. | Students can map sounds to words before practicing natural speed. |
| Telephone menus | Favor clear digits, names, and options over maximum throughput. | Codec compression and noisy lines reduce the intelligibility margin. |
Adjust locally, not blindly
Changing one rate for an entire document often produces unnatural results. Keep narrative close to normal, then slow only the sentence that contains an unfamiliar acronym or a sequence of numbers. Conversely, a routine legal disclaimer or repeated status message may tolerate a modest increase. Render the surrounding sentence as well as the changed phrase; prosody depends on context.
Use SSML for rate and prosody
SSML (Speech Synthesis Markup Language) lets you apply pauses, emphasis, pronunciation, voice changes, and prosody to selected text. Google supports elements including <voice>, <lang>, <break>, <say-as>, and <prosody>; AWS documents pronunciation, volume, pitch, and speech-rate controls; Azure documents voice, pitch, pronunciation, rate, and volume controls. Tag support is not identical, so validate markup against the provider’s supported-tag list.
<speak>
Your order ships in
<break time="400ms"/>
<prosody rate="slow">three business days</prosody>.
</speak>
Use a provider’s native rate parameter when you need one consistent setting for a whole request. Use SSML when only a phrase, list, pause, or pronunciation needs adjustment. Always audition the rendered result: unsupported tags may be ignored, rejected, or handled differently across engines.

Should I use MP3, WAV, Ogg, or a telephony codec?
Choose the encoding from the delivery and post-production requirement. Compressed formats reduce transfer size for websites and mobile apps; uncompressed PCM preserves samples for editing; μ-law and A-law are intended for G.711-compatible telephone systems.
| Format or encoding | Best fit | Trade-off or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | Web playback, downloadable narration, and mobile distribution where broad compatibility matters. | Lossy compression; repeated re-encoding can reduce quality. |
| Ogg Vorbis | Web and application delivery when the playback stack supports Ogg. | Efficient compressed distribution, but device and browser support should be checked for your target. |
| WAV/PCM | Editing, mastering, archival intermediates, and systems that require raw samples. | Large files; the exact PCM sample rate, bit depth, channel layout, and container must match the next tool. |
| μ-law (mu-law) | North American-style G.711 telephony and IVR paths that specify μ-law. | Telephone-band audio and codec constraints are intentional; do not substitute a high-fidelity music format. |
| A-law | G.711 telephony and IVR paths that specify A-law, commonly in regions using that variant. | Follow the telephony platform’s required rate, channel, and container exactly. |
Amazon Polly lists MP3, Ogg Vorbis, PCM, μ-law, and A-law among its output choices. Google Cloud and Gemini documentation also describe uncompressed PCM/WAV options, while Gemini’s defaults are aimed at speech playback rather than mastering. The correct choice is the one accepted by the next system in your pipeline.
When is WAV preferable to MP3?
Use WAV or another PCM output when you will edit, normalize, mix music, add sound effects, run quality control, or pass the file to a system that expects raw samples. Export a compressed delivery copy only after those operations. If the audio will simply be downloaded or streamed, MP3 or Ogg normally avoids unnecessary bandwidth and storage.
When should a telephony codec be selected?
Select μ-law or A-law only when the phone, PBX, IVR, or communications API specifies G.711-compatible audio. Supplying a 24 kHz stereo WAV to a telephone interface can cause rejection, resampling artifacts, or silence. Confirm the platform’s required sample rate, mono channel layout, byte order, and file header before synthesis.

What sample rate, bit depth, and channel layout should TTS use?
There is no single universal TTS sample rate. The sample rate must satisfy the destination system and the provider’s available settings. Bit depth describes the precision of each PCM sample; channel layout describes mono or stereo. Neither should be chosen independently of the playback or editing pipeline.
| Provider documentation | Published audio details | How to interpret them |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud SSML documentation | MP3 and Ogg are documented at 24 kHz with fixed 24–96 kbps settings. A 24 kHz, 16-bit PCM WAV option is documented as deprecated. | Follow the currently supported encoding list for your API version; do not assume the deprecated WAV setting is a future-proof default. |
| Gemini TTS documentation | 24 kHz mono, 16-bit is the default; selectable sample rates include 24,000, 16,000, and 8,000 Hz. | Use 24 kHz mono for ordinary speech unless the receiving system requires 16 kHz or 8 kHz. |
| Amazon Polly | Supports several compressed, PCM, and telephony-oriented output choices; exact rate and container requirements depend on the selected format and API. | Inspect the selected voice and output-format documentation rather than assuming one Polly-wide specification. |
| Azure Speech | Voice, prosody, and output configuration are exposed through the Speech synthesis service and SSML. | Choose a documented output format that matches your player or downstream processing tool. |
These figures are provider-specific settings, not industry-wide rules. A higher sample rate does not repair a mispronounced word, and converting an 8 kHz telephony file to 24 kHz does not restore lost detail. Avoid unnecessary sample-rate conversions; synthesize or export in the format your destination actually accepts.
How do Google Cloud, Amazon Polly, Azure, and Gemini differ for voice and format choices?
All four services expose voice selection and some form of rate or prosody control, but their names, ranges, supported tags, streaming behavior, and output menus differ. Compare the controls you will use in production, not just the number of voices advertised.
| Service | Useful documented controls | Selection questions |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Text-to-Speech | Language, gender, accent, SSML, speaking rate, volume gain, and multiple encodings. Google’s product page lists more than 380 voices across more than 75 languages and variants, accessed in 2026. | Does the exact voice support your locale and SSML tags? Is the required output still supported, especially where 24 kHz 16-bit PCM WAV is marked deprecated? |
| Amazon Polly | Voice IDs, multiple voices for many languages, SSML pronunciation and prosody controls, compressed, PCM, and telephony-oriented outputs. | Which voice ID and engine are available for your language, and which output format does the receiving system accept? |
| Azure Speech | SSML controls for voice, pitch, pronunciation, rate, and volume, plus service-specific output configuration. | Are the chosen voice, markup tags, and output format available in the region and API version you deploy? |
| Gemini API TTS | 24 kHz mono 16-bit default with 24,000, 16,000, or 8,000 Hz choices documented; speech-generation output is designed for API workflows. | Does the default mono PCM-style output fit your player, or must you transcode for telephony, streaming, or editing? |
Amazon Web Services describes its service this way: “Amazon Polly converts input text into life-like speech.” Treat that as a product description, not a guarantee that every voice or language will sound equally natural for your script. Audition the exact voice, language, rate, and format combination you intend to ship.

How do I choose settings for a real TTS project?
- Define the destination. Write down whether the result is a web stream, app asset, edited master, audiobook-like download, accessibility feature, or telephone prompt.
- Specify the audience and locale. Record language, regional pronunciation, accessibility needs, expected listening devices, and whether users need a playback-speed control.
- Build the audition script. Include ordinary prose plus names, dates, currencies, acronyms, lists, punctuation, and every term likely to expose pronunciation problems.
- Shortlist voices. Filter by language and locale, then compare intelligibility, character, style controls, gender options where relevant, and consistency.
- Set a baseline rate. Render near the engine default. Measure whether listeners understand the material before changing speed to meet a duration target.
- Add targeted SSML. Insert pauses, pronunciation hints, language changes, emphasis, or local rate changes only where the script needs them.
- Select the delivery encoding. Use MP3 or Ogg for ordinary compressed distribution, PCM/WAV for editing, or μ-law/A-law for a G.711 telephone path.
- Match technical parameters. Confirm sample rate, bit depth, channels, bitrate, container, and byte-order requirements with the receiving system.
- Test the complete path. Play the file through the actual app, browser, headset, phone line, or editing workstation. Check clipping, pauses, truncation, metadata handling, and pronunciation.
- Document the configuration. Save the provider, voice ID, locale, SSML, rate, output format, and date so a later voice-model or API change can be detected.
What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?
The voice sounds natural but mispronounces names
Add a pronunciation rule or phonetic form supported by the provider’s SSML implementation, then test the word in a complete sentence. If the provider does not support the needed pronunciation control, choose another voice or preprocess the text carefully; changing the global speaking rate will not solve a pronunciation error.
The faster version is hard to follow
Reduce the rate in small steps, add pauses around lists and clauses, and repeat the audition on a phone speaker. If only a few phrases are difficult, apply local SSML rather than slowing the entire recording.
The audio is rejected by a playback or phone system
Compare the generated file with the destination specification one field at a time: codec, container, sample rate, bit depth, channels, bitrate, and header. Re-synthesize in the required format when possible; repeated conversions can introduce avoidable quality loss.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The file is too large for an app or website
Use a supported compressed format such as MP3 or Ogg, reduce bitrate only after listening for artifacts, and stream or cache by segment if the platform permits. Keep a PCM master so you can create a new delivery encode without repeatedly compressing an already compressed file.

SSML behaves differently between providers
Check the provider’s supported-tag list and namespace requirements. Keep markup conservative, render a test sentence for every tag you use, and maintain provider-specific templates when one service does not implement the same element or attribute.
What is the practical rule of thumb?
Pick the clearest locale-appropriate voice, keep the rate near normal until listening tests justify a change, and let the destination dictate the encoding. Use SSML for precise local control, preserve PCM when you still need to edit, and treat every provider’s sample-rate and bitrate table as an implementation detail to verify—not as a universal standard.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the TTS voice after generating an audio library?
Yes, but plan for re-auditioning. A new voice can change pronunciation, timing, pauses, and perceived loudness, so regenerate a representative sample and compare timing before replacing an entire library.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does a higher TTS bitrate make the voice sound more human?
Not by itself. Bitrate mainly affects compressed-file artifacts; naturalness is dominated by the voice model, pronunciation, prosody, and playback conditions. Increase bitrate only when listening tests reveal compression problems.
Should TTS files be mono or stereo?
Speech-only assets are usually simplest in mono because both channels would contain the same information. Use stereo only when your downstream design intentionally combines the voice with spatial effects or other stereo content.
How should I version TTS settings for repeatable builds?
Store the provider and model or voice ID, locale, SSML source, rate, output encoding, sample rate, and generation date alongside each asset. Re-render a fixed test script after provider updates so you can detect changed pronunciation or timing before a full release.
