Choose a gaming TV by matching its native refresh rate and HDMI input modes to your console or PC, then compare input-lag measurements taken at the resolution, refresh rate and picture mode you plan to use. A “HDMI 2.1” label by itself does not tell you which features a particular port supports.

Start with the signal your console or PC can use

A TV can only show the gaming signal its source and game provide. Before comparing TVs, check your console or PC’s output options and the games you play. Then verify that the TV accepts the resolution and refresh rate you want on the HDMI port you will use.

  • Identify whether your source and games can output 4K at 120Hz, or whether 4K/60Hz is the relevant target.
  • Check the TV’s native refresh rate and the formats each HDMI input accepts.
  • If you plan to use VRR or ALLM, confirm that the source and the specific TV port support compatible features.

What 60Hz and 120Hz mean for gaming

Refresh rate is how often a display refreshes its image, measured in hertz (Hz). A 120Hz TV can refresh 120 times per second, twice as often as a 60Hz TV. That does not mean every game runs at 120 frames per second: the refresh rate is the TV’s capability, while the source and game determine the signal and frame delivery.

A 120Hz model is worth considering if your console or PC and the games you play can use a compatible higher-refresh-rate signal. If they cannot, the TV’s 120Hz capability will not make those games produce more frames. HDMI’s official overview lists 4K at 120Hz among the higher-resolution and refresh-rate modes supported by HDMI 2.1, but that capability does not establish that a particular TV port accepts it.

What HDMI 2.1 does—and what it does not guarantee

HDMI 2.1 feature summaries include 4K/120Hz, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Quick Frame Transport (QFT). HDMI LA describes HDMI 2.1b as supporting bandwidth capability up to 48Gbps. These are specification capabilities, not a promise that every product labelled HDMI 2.1 implements every feature on every port.

Read the manufacturer’s specification page or manual for the exact TV model. Check each port, not just the TV’s headline description, and verify whether the desired resolution, refresh rate and gaming features work together.

VRR and ALLM: smoother timing and automatic low-latency mode

Variable Refresh Rate

Game frame delivery can vary with scene complexity and system performance. VRR lets a compatible source deliver frames at a changing rate and coordinates the display’s timing with that delivery. This can help reduce tearing and judder when frames do not arrive at a fixed cadence; it does not make the game render more frames. Check that your source and TV support a compatible VRR format and that the TV’s stated range suits your intended use. The HDMI Forum describes VRR as a way to reduce or eliminate lag, stutter and tearing; that standards description is not a guarantee of a specific result on every TV.

Auto Low Latency Mode

ALLM lets a compatible game source signal the TV to switch to a low-latency mode. HDMI LA describes this as automatic switching for gaming. Low-latency modes may stop some image-processing features, so the picture can differ from your usual viewing settings. When the source exits that mode, the TV can return to its earlier picture setting. ALLM is a switching feature, not a measurement or guarantee of a particular input-lag figure.

How to compare input lag

Input lag is the delay between an input from the source and the resulting image appearing on screen. It depends on the signal and the TV’s picture mode, so a single lag number without test conditions is not enough for a fair comparison.

  1. Match the signal. Compare the same resolution and refresh rate—for example, 4K/60Hz against 4K/60Hz, or 4K/120Hz against 4K/120Hz.
  2. Match the picture mode. Compare Game mode with Game mode if that is how you will play. If you intend to use additional picture processing, look for measurements in that mode instead.
  3. Read the test conditions. RTINGS says its TV input-lag testing covers multiple resolutions and refresh rates and, unless otherwise noted, uses the TV’s lowest-input-lag mode, usually called Game mode.
  4. Treat thresholds as context-specific. RTINGS calls under 15ms a “good value” and refers to a 15ms “noticeable difference” in its 1080p/60Hz test context. Those figures are not a universal pass/fail rule for other signals or every viewer.

For a more useful comparison, use independent measurements that disclose resolution, refresh rate and mode. RTINGS’ testing-methodology page explains why the conditions matter: RTINGS TV input lag test.

When you need a new HDMI cable

For a compatible TV and source that need the bandwidth for a high-resolution, high-refresh-rate signal, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. HDMI LA says this cable supports 48Gbps for uncompressed HDMI 2.1 features and is backward compatible with earlier HDMI devices. A cable cannot add a feature missing from the TV or source, and replacing a cable is not a way to reduce input lag by itself.
