Choose a travel backpack by how it fits your torso and hips when loaded—not by its advertised capacity or your height alone. Measure your torso and hip circumference, check the specific pack’s sizing chart, and walk around with a representative sightseeing load before deciding.
How to choose a travel backpack: start with fit
Backpack sizing varies by brand and model. Measure your torso length and hip circumference, then compare both measurements with the manufacturer’s chart for the exact pack. Height alone is not a reliable way to select a size.
REI Expert Advice recommends that 80 percent or more of a backpack’s weight be supported by the hips. That is fitting guidance, not a measured guarantee for every backpack or wearer. REI’s backpack fit guide explains the adjustment process.
Try the backpack with a realistic load
Pack the items you expect to carry while sightseeing and wear the bag for a while, ideally walking around rather than only standing in front of a mirror. A comfortable backpack for walking all day should stay settled on your body without painful pressure or awkward shifting.

- Check whether the hipbelt stays in place as you walk.
- Notice any painful pressure from the shoulder straps.
- Pay attention to shifting, rubbing, or discomfort as you move.
If you are unsure about sizing or adjustment, try multiple sizes or ask for an in-person fitting.
How should a backpack hip belt fit?
Position the hipbelt over the upper half of your pelvis and snug it comfortably so it can support the pack without digging in. Shoulder straps should sit comfortably rather than creating painful pressure. Adjustments are individual: a belt or strap position that feels right for one wearer may not suit another.

Follow the pack maker’s fitting instructions, including its guidance on load lifters. Osprey’s sizing and fit guidance covers hipbelt position and load-lifter adjustment.
Check the harness adjustment range
Look for a hipbelt and harness that adjust to your body. Some packs have adjustable torso systems that accommodate a wider range of fits, but this feature is not available on every travel backpack. Confirm the exact model’s specifications rather than assuming that a “travel” label or hipbelt means it will fit you.

Choose capacity for the sightseeing day you actually have
List what you intend to carry, then choose a pack with enough room for those items without adding space that encourages you to bring more than you need. There is no universally correct liter capacity for sightseeing; the right choice depends on your day’s gear and how you pack it.
