Choose the exact phone model with the clearest, longest dated update commitment, then check that you can get its battery and other likely replacement parts repaired in your country. A long software promise has limited value if a damaged screen or worn battery makes the phone impractical to keep using.
Compare update periods and repair support separately: an OS-upgrade promise is not the same as a security-patch promise, and a manufacturer’s repair program is not proof that every part will be available at a reasonable cost near you. The right choice is the phone whose software timeline, parts supply, local service options, warranty, and expected ownership cost fit your needs.
What should you compare before choosing a phone?
Start with the exact model number, not just the manufacturer’s name or phone family. Support duration, repair access, and parts availability can differ between models, regions, and variants. Write down what the manufacturer commits to for that model and where the commitment applies.

- OS upgrades: How long will the phone receive major operating-system upgrades, and when does that period start?
- Security patches: How long are security updates promised? Record this separately from OS upgrades.
- Parts: Which components are available, for how long after sales end, and how quickly can repairers obtain them?
- Repair routes: Can you use a manufacturer service center, an authorized or independent provider, mail-in service, or self-repair in your country?
- Battery replacement: Is replacement supported, and can you find a local price and service route before buying?
- Warranty and durability: What is the warranty term, what damage is covered, and what happens if you or a third party repairs the phone?
- Ownership cost: What might you pay over the time you expect to keep it, including a battery or screen repair if needed?
Keep the evidence specific: save the support page or product document for the exact model and region, note its publication or access date, and distinguish a published commitment from an estimate or a repair option that is available only in selected locations.
How long will this phone get updates?
Look for separate, dated commitments for operating-system upgrades and security patches. The support start date matters: a promise measured from the phone’s first availability is not necessarily a promise for the same number of years from the day you buy it.
Compare the start date as well as the duration
For Google Pixel 8 and later, Google’s support documentation says the phones receive seven years of OS and security updates starting when each device first became available on the Google Store in the United States. That is a model-family commitment with a US-specific start-date definition; check the support terms for the exact phone and the market where you are buying it.
Samsung’s 2024 Galaxy S24 Product Environmental Report states seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. Those are two different measures: “generations” describes the OS-upgrade commitment, while “years” describes the security-update commitment. The report does not establish a start date in the information cited here, so confirm the current model-specific terms before calculating an end date.
Fairphone reports eight years of software support for the Fairphone 5. The cited information does not split that commitment into separate OS-upgrade and security-patch durations, so do not assume that the phrase means eight years of each without checking the model’s current support details.
Make the promise useful in a comparison
Record the date from which the manufacturer measures support, the resulting stated end date if it provides one, and whether the duration refers to OS upgrades, security patches, or both. If the start date or patch schedule is not stated, mark it as unconfirmed rather than deriving a date from the phone’s launch alone.
Also consider how you use your phone. If you intend to keep it for several years, a longer documented support window can reduce the chance that you have to replace it because its supported life ends before you are ready. It does not guarantee that the phone will meet every future app or performance need, so treat update length as one part of the buying decision rather than a prediction of how long the device will feel suitable.
Can you still get a battery or screen in five years?
There is no universal answer for every model and country. Check the parts list, the manufacturer’s stated availability period, the repair provider’s coverage, and whether the part can be delivered in a useful timeframe.

Check parts breadth and availability dates
Do not stop at a statement that a phone is “repairable.” Look for the components most likely to matter to you, including the battery, display, charging connector, cameras, and buttons. Check whether the manufacturer names these parts, whether they are offered to consumers or only to professional repairers, and how long they will remain available after the phone leaves the market.
In the European Union, ecodesign requirements that apply from 20 June 2025 establish requirements for covered smartphones, including access to repair and key spare parts. The European Commission says critical spare parts must be supplied to professional repairers within five to ten working days and kept available for seven years after the end of sales. The consolidated regulation names batteries, front and rear cameras, charging connectors, buttons, microphones, speakers, and fold mechanisms among covered parts. These are EU requirements for covered products, not a guarantee that every part is stocked by every nearby repair shop.
The same EU rules require operating-system upgrades to be available for at least five years from the end of placement on the market. That is a different clock from a manufacturer’s promise measured from first availability, and it is important not to treat the two start dates as interchangeable.
Use battery durability information carefully
The European Commission’s EU battery benchmark says batteries should withstand at least 800 charge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial capacity. This is a durability requirement in the EU rules, not a promise that a particular phone will retain a fixed capacity after a specific number of years of your use. Your charging habits and conditions are not represented by the benchmark, so use it alongside the battery replacement route and price rather than as a substitute for them.
Where can you get the phone repaired?
Check the repair routes that are actually available in your country and for your exact model. A manufacturer’s global support page may describe programs that are limited by location, model eligibility, or provider participation.
Manufacturer service and self-repair options
Samsung’s US support page describes in-store, mail-in, and self-repair routes, says repairs use genuine Samsung parts, and states that parts are available for at least three years after production ends. This is a manufacturer service statement for the US. In the EU, compare it with the applicable legal parts-availability requirements rather than assuming the US statement describes the same period or terms.
Apple documents repair through Apple Stores, Authorized Service Providers, Independent Repair Providers with access to genuine parts, and Self Service Repair for selected models and regions. Apple also provides Parts and Service History so an owner can see whether repairs used genuine, used, or unknown parts. Program availability and warranty treatment vary by country and model; verify the exact route before treating it as an option for your purchase.
For any self-repair program, verify that the instructions and parts cover the specific model and region, and check the warranty terms before starting. The presence of a self-repair option does not by itself establish that every repair is suitable for a first-time repairer or that the repair will be cheaper than a professional service.

Ask local providers before buying
If you expect to use a local shop, ask whether it accepts the exact model, whether it can obtain genuine or otherwise specified parts, and whether the repair affects any warranty coverage. Confirm the expected turnaround time and the total quote, including labor and any required parts or service. A manufacturer parts commitment and a local provider’s ability to order a part are related but separate questions.
Is a more repairable phone worth paying more for?
It can be worthwhile if the phone’s repair options match your plans and reduce the risk of replacing the whole device after a common failure. Compare the expected cost and inconvenience of repairs with the upfront price difference; “repairable” alone does not prove that ownership will be cheaper.
What the Fairphone 5 commitment tells you
Fairphone reports that the Fairphone 5 has a five-year warranty, eight years of software support, hardware and spare-parts support until at least 2031, and ten replaceable modules. These facts make the support and repair offer unusually concrete in the cited information, but they do not establish a repair price, the time needed for a repair, or local service availability for every buyer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the module count as a description of the phone’s design, not as a total-cost calculation. To decide whether it is worth paying more, find the current battery and screen replacement costs in your market, check how you would obtain parts, and estimate whether you would keep the phone long enough to benefit from that support.
Compare ownership scenarios, not just sticker prices
For each candidate, write down the price you will pay, how long you plan to use it, and the support end date you can verify. Then add the repair costs that are relevant to you, such as battery replacement or screen repair, using actual local quotes where available. If the price or a repair cost is unknown, leave it unknown rather than substituting a guess.
Consider the trade-off in practical terms: a phone with a longer update period but limited convenient repair routes may suit a buyer who replaces phones regularly; a phone with accessible replacement parts may suit someone who wants to keep a device through battery wear or a component failure. Neither choice is automatically better for every buyer.
How do you compare phones without mixing up promises?
Put the evidence in one table and label which source and market each claim applies to. This keeps a manufacturer’s update statement, a legal requirement, and a repair program from being mistaken for equivalent guarantees.

How should you make the final decision?
Use a short verification process before ordering. It is easier to resolve unclear support dates or unavailable parts while comparing phones than after a repair is needed.
- Identify the exact model and market. Record the model name or number and the country where you will buy and use it. Do not transfer support terms from another regional variant without confirmation.
- Find the update commitment. Record OS-upgrade and security-patch durations separately. Note the support clock’s start point and any stated end date.
- Check the likely repairs. Search the model’s official support information for battery, screen, charging connector, and other parts you care about. Record parts availability periods and delivery time where stated.
- Confirm a repair route. Check manufacturer service, authorized and independent providers, mail-in service, and self-repair eligibility in your location. Confirm that a route applies to the exact phone.
- Read warranty conditions. Note the warranty term and whether self-repair or third-party service changes coverage. Check durability and water-resistance statements without assuming they cover accidental damage.
- Compare likely ownership costs. Use current local prices or quotes for the phone and likely repairs. Include time and convenience if the nearest repair option is difficult to access.
- Choose the strongest fit, not the biggest number. Favor a documented support window and a workable repair path that fit how long you plan to keep the phone.
What are the most common comparison mistakes?
Most bad comparisons come from treating similar-sounding claims as interchangeable. Check the wording and the conditions attached to each number.
- Counting from the purchase date when the maker counts from first availability: use the manufacturer’s stated start date, especially if the phone has been on sale for a while.
- Combining OS upgrades and security updates: record both categories separately; a promise for one does not automatically establish the duration of the other.
- Reading a parts promise as nearby service: parts availability does not establish that a local repairer participates, can order the part, or has an appointment available.
- Treating self-repair access as universally available: programs can be limited by model and region, and warranty treatment can vary.
- Assuming legal minimums answer every model question: EU requirements apply to covered phones in that market, while an individual phone’s page explains its support and service terms.
- Using a battery cycle benchmark as a lifespan prediction: a regulatory benchmark is not a guarantee of the capacity your own battery will retain after years of personal use.
- Comparing warranty length without coverage details: record the term, what it covers, and how repair choices interact with it.
What does the evidence establish—and what should you verify?
The available commitments show that substantial update and repair support can be described in specific terms: a duration, a start point, a parts-availability window, or a repair route. They do not establish that every device will be repaired cheaply, that every repair provider serves every location, or that every phone will receive the same support in every market.

Before buying, confirm the current model-specific support page and local service options. If a source does not state a start date, part price, or geographic eligibility, treat that detail as unconfirmed rather than inferring it from another model or country.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the EU five-year update rule mean five years from when I buy my phone?
No. The stated EU minimum is measured from the end of placement on the market, not from an individual buyer’s purchase date. The phone maker’s own support terms may use a different start point, so check both clocks separately.
Does an update commitment guarantee that my phone will stay fast?
No. The cited commitments describe software-update availability, not a performance guarantee or a promise that every future app will work equally well. Assess update support alongside the device’s suitability for the tasks you expect to keep doing.
Can I rely on a repair shop to use genuine parts?
Not without checking. Ask the specific provider what parts it uses and whether the manufacturer or its program recognizes that repair route; policies and access differ by model and location.
