Choose a phone by checking three things on the exact model you plan to buy: whether its AI features handle tasks you actually need, how long its battery lasts under your kind of use, and how many years of OS and security updates the manufacturer commits to. In 2026, Google promises seven years of OS and security updates for Pixel 8 and later; Samsung’s Galaxy S25 policy promises seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, while its Galaxy A27 5G commitment is up to six generations and six years. Those promises do not make either brand a universal winner: AI requirements, real-world battery endurance, repair access, price, and market or carrier terms still matter.
What should I compare before choosing a phone?
Start with the work the phone must do, not a headline feature or a large battery number. Compare AI usefulness, battery endurance, and the exact model’s support commitment first; then check ownership details such as price, storage, ergonomics, camera quality, network compatibility, warranty, repair options, and ecosystem fit.
A practical comparison should answer these questions for each candidate:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- AI: Which specific tasks can it do, in which languages, and in which apps? Does the feature run on the phone, need an internet connection, require an account, or carry a subscription condition?
- Battery: Is there an independent standardized endurance result for the exact model? Does it reflect your likely use—cellular data, navigation, gaming, camera use, or mostly Wi-Fi?
- Support: How many years of OS updates and security updates are promised for this model, and from what starting date? Are feature updates included, and can rollout timing vary by market or carrier?
- Ownership: Can you get a replacement battery or screen locally, at a reasonable cost? What warranty applies, and is the storage tier sufficient for the time you plan to keep the phone?
Do not treat a brand-wide support summary as a guarantee for a particular handset. Model, launch date, region, carrier, and the wording of the manufacturer’s policy all affect what a buyer can reasonably expect.

Which phone has the best AI features and battery life?
There is no supported universal winner: AI value depends on the tasks and conditions that matter to you, while battery endurance depends on the workload and should be judged using comparable testing. A phone that leads on one criterion may be a worse choice if its useful features are unavailable in your language or its battery does not last through your day.
Make an AI task list
Write down two or three things you would genuinely use, such as searching from what is on screen, editing an image, transcribing speech, translating voice, or asking an assistant for help. Then verify that the exact model offers those functions in your country and preferred language. A long feature list is not evidence that every feature works everywhere or inside every app.
For example, Samsung’s Galaxy A27 5G announcement names Google Gemini, Perplexity, Bixby, Circle to Search, object erasure, and voice transcription and translation in 22 languages. That establishes examples of announced capabilities for that model, not a guarantee that each service, language, account condition, or feature is available to every buyer in every region. Google describes Pixel Feature Drops as bringing enhancements and new features, including AI technology, to supported Pixel devices; the exact set of supported features depends on the phone and the feature.
Check the conditions, not just the name
AI tools can behave differently depending on how they are delivered. An on-device function may be usable without the same network connection as a cloud-based service, while a cloud feature can require connectivity and may have account or service conditions. Do not assume a feature is offline, private by default, free, available in third-party apps, or supported in your language unless the manufacturer or service states that for the exact function.
Samsung’s Galaxy S25 materials, for instance, state that Portrait Studio requires a network connection and a Samsung Account, and that generated results carry an AI watermark. That is a concrete reminder to inspect per-feature terms rather than infer them from the overall Galaxy AI label. Before buying, check account requirements, network needs, language coverage, app reach, privacy controls, and whether ongoing use is subscription-gated.

How can I compare battery life realistically?
Use an independent standardized endurance test when one is available for the exact model, then decide whether its test conditions resemble your routine. Battery capacity alone does not establish how many hours a phone will last, and there is no single authoritative current cross-brand runtime table that supports naming one universal winner.
Match the test to your day
Battery drain changes with screen brightness and refresh rate, cellular versus Wi-Fi use, navigation, camera recording, gaming, hotspot use, and standby time. A phone used mostly on Wi-Fi with the display dimmed may have a very different day from the same phone used for navigation over cellular, video, or demanding games. When looking at a test result, note what was measured and under what conditions; do not compare a looped video result with a mixed-use estimate as though they were the same test.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThink through a typical and a demanding day before choosing:
- Typical day: Estimate time spent messaging, browsing, streaming, calls, and standby, and whether you are usually on Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- High-drain moments: Consider long navigation sessions, gaming, camera use, poor-signal areas, hotspot use, and high display brightness.
- Charging opportunity: Note whether you can charge at a desk or in a car, or whether the phone must last until bedtime without a top-up.
Look for repeated standardized results rather than relying only on manufacturer estimates or a reviewer’s different usage pattern. If a result is unavailable for the exact configuration, treat battery life as uncertain and avoid transferring a result from a different model just because the names are similar.
Include charging, heat, and eventual battery replacement
Endurance is only part of battery ownership. Check charging speed, whether a charger is included, adaptive-charging options, battery-health tools, and how the phone behaves thermally under demanding use. A fast charger can make a short top-up more convenient, but it does not prove longer runtime between charges.

Also check whether a replacement battery is available in your region, who can fit it, the repair price, and whether the repair affects warranty coverage. A phone can remain supported by software yet become inconvenient to keep if its battery cannot be replaced affordably or locally.
How many years of updates will a phone get?
Read the exact model’s official commitment and distinguish OS upgrades, security updates, and feature updates. The term “years of support” is not precise enough on its own: two policies can count different update types, use different start dates, or apply to different product lines.
| Manufacturer and model or scope | Published commitment | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8 and later | Seven years of OS and security updates; the period may include new or upgraded features through Pixel Drops. | Google counts from when each phone first became available on the Google Store in the U.S. The policy is model-specific. Google’s support documentation states the current policy; Google announced the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro commitment in 2023. |
| Samsung Galaxy S25 series | Seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. | Samsung states the period runs from global launch. Timing can vary by model, network provider, and market. |
| Samsung Galaxy A27 5G | Up to six generations of Android/One UI upgrades and six years of security updates. | This is the commitment named in Samsung’s 2026 announcement for this model; “up to” is part of the policy wording. |
These are not identical promises. A generation of OS upgrades is not the same unit as a year of security updates, and a policy that includes feature drops does not mean every new feature will reach every supported phone. When a phone has a particular launch or availability date, calculate the remaining period from the policy’s stated start point rather than assuming the full advertised term begins on the day you purchase it.
How do brand-level support summaries help?
Which?’s 2026 summary gives typical minimum support periods by brand: Google, 7 years; Apple, 6–7; Fairphone, 5–8; Samsung, 5–7; OnePlus/Oppo, 4–6; Xiaomi, 3–6; and Motorola, 2–7. These are brand-level ranges, not promises for every model. Use them to decide which manufacturers’ model policies are worth checking, not to predict the end date for a specific phone.
For a purchase decision, find the page or announcement that names the exact handset, the number and type of updates, and the date from which the period is counted. Also look for regional or carrier qualifications and consider how update rollout timing fits your plans. If the manufacturer does not clearly state an exact model commitment, do not substitute a more generous policy for another model from the same brand.

Neither is automatically better for everyone. The Pixel 8-and-later policy and the Galaxy S25 commitment both state seven-year security support, but their OS-upgrade wording and start points differ; AI tools, battery endurance, repair access, and local availability may decide the more useful phone for you.
Use the support table as a starting point, then compare the exact models you can actually buy. Google’s Pixel policy starts when each eligible phone first became available on the Google Store in the U.S.; Samsung’s Galaxy S25 statement counts from global launch, with timing that may vary by model, provider, and market. A purchase made later in the product’s life does not reset the manufacturer’s clock.
For long-term practicality, include physical repairability in the comparison. The GSMA identifies longer software and security support, repair services, and access to cost-effective genuine parts as important to device longevity. Its examples include seven-year commitments for Samsung Galaxy S25 and Google Pixel 8 and later, and an eight-year software-support commitment for Fairphone 5. That does not establish that every repair is inexpensive or available in every location; check local parts and service access before treating a long software promise as a complete longevity plan.
What should I check besides battery capacity and update years?
Check the costs and fit that determine whether you can comfortably keep the phone. A long support period matters less if the storage is too small, the phone does not work well with your network, or a repair is impractical where you live.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Price and storage: Compare the actual purchase price for the storage tier you need. Account for the time you intend to keep the phone, not just its entry price.
- Ergonomics: Check dimensions, weight, grip, button placement, and screen size in person if possible. A phone that is uncomfortable to carry or use can undermine the value of its features.
- Camera: Compare the camera functions you use—such as indoor photos, video, or zoom—rather than relying on a general camera label.
- Network compatibility: Confirm that the exact regional model supports your carrier’s bands and services. Availability and support can differ by market.
- Warranty and service: Verify warranty coverage, local service options, repair pricing, and access to genuine replacement parts.
- Ecosystem: Check compatibility with the devices, services, accessories, and accounts you already rely on. Switching can involve more than moving contacts and photos.
- Resale and accessories: Include the likely cost of accessories you need and consider resale value as one factor, not a guarantee.
How do I choose a phone step by step?
Use a short elimination process so that a strong marketing claim cannot hide a poor fit elsewhere. Keep a shortlist of a few exact models and record evidence for each criterion rather than comparing brand reputations alone.

- Name the AI jobs. Identify the features you would use weekly. Verify their availability, supported language, account and network conditions, privacy controls, and app reach for each model.
- Find comparable battery evidence. Look for independent standardized results for the exact model and note the test method. Compare them only when their conditions are meaningfully similar to your own use.
- Read the support policy closely. Record the OS and security commitments separately, the start date, any feature-update scope, and carrier or market qualifications.
- Check the repair path. Confirm battery and screen replacement availability, local service, repair cost, warranty terms, and parts access.
- Compare total fit and cost. Evaluate the storage tier, ergonomics, camera, accessories, ecosystem compatibility, and purchase price for the configuration you would actually buy.
- Choose the best balance for your priorities. If the phones are close, favor the one that meets your hardest requirement—such as an AI function you will use, reliable endurance for your demanding day, or a clearly stated support period—rather than optimizing a specification you rarely notice.
What are the most common buying mistakes?
Most mistakes come from treating a broad label or one specification as a complete answer. Verify the claim at model level and keep each qualification attached to the feature or number.
- Buying for an AI name instead of a task: A feature may need a network, account, particular language, or supported app. Confirm the conditions for the specific function.
- Assuming every feature is on-device: The processing method can differ by feature. Check network requirements and privacy controls before relying on a function when offline or handling sensitive material.
- Picking by battery capacity alone: Capacity does not capture screen, network, workload, charging, or thermal effects. Compare realistic test conditions instead.
- Comparing unlike battery tests: Different test methods and use patterns can produce results that are not directly comparable. Prefer the same standardized method when possible.
- Reading a brand range as a model guarantee: Brand-level summaries hide model-level variation. Find the policy for the exact phone and check its start date.
- Counting from purchase day: Some support periods start from first availability or launch, not the date you bought the device. Work out the remaining support window.
- Ignoring repair and parts: Software support cannot keep a phone practical if a worn battery or damaged screen is prohibitively difficult to replace.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI features keep working if I have no internet connection?
It depends on the individual feature and how it is delivered. Check the feature’s stated connection requirements before relying on it while traveling or outside coverage.
Will my phone stop working when its software support ends?
An end to the stated update period is not the same as an automatic shutdown, but it means the manufacturer’s published update commitment has ended. Do not assume future security fixes or continued compatibility with every service after that point.
Do long support promises mean every new AI feature arrives on my phone?
No. Google describes Pixel Drops as bringing new and enhanced features to supported Pixel devices, but a support period is not a promise that every later feature will work on every eligible model. Verify feature availability for the exact handset.
