Choose the TV platform and its setup path before comparing picture quality. The best choices for fewer ads and less preinstalled software are models that offer a “basic TV” mode or can remain offline after setup. Evaluate four separate issues: whether the home screen contains sponsored rows, whether advertising can be removed or only de-personalized, which viewing-data and automatic content recognition (ACR) controls are available, and whether an account or cloud terms are mandatory. Sony Bravia 8 II and TCL QM8K models offered a basic-TV route in RTINGS’ current testing, while the Hisense U8QG required Google sign-in and acceptance of Google’s terms. A TV used only as an HDMI display gives the manufacturer less visibility, but an external streamer then has its own account, ads and privacy settings.

What does “fewer ads and less preinstalled software” mean on a smart TV?

These are separate purchase and setup questions, not one feature. A television can show no personalized ads while still displaying sponsored content on its home screen, and it can collect viewing data through ACR even when you never open the built-in app store.

What to check What a favorable result looks like What to verify before buying
Home-screen advertising No sponsored tiles or promotional rows, or a documented switch that removes them Open current photographs or a store demo of the exact model and inspect every row, including screensaver and input pages
Ad controls A setting that removes advertising, not merely one that stops personalization Read the privacy and advertising menus; “personalized ads off” can still leave generic ads
Viewing-data collection ACR, viewing-information and interactive-TV features are off or optional Search the manual for “ACR,” “viewing data,” “viewing information services,” “interactive TV” and “advertising ID”
Setup path A “basic TV,” “use as display” or skip-account option Confirm what functionality disappears when you decline an account or cloud terms
Account requirements No mandatory manufacturer or platform account for HDMI and broadcast use Check the first-run wizard for required sign-in and terms acceptance on the exact regional model
Menu transparency Clear, separately labeled controls for ads, viewing data, voice and microphone access Look for a current manual and screenshots; labels and defaults can vary by firmware and country

RTINGS’ ad-free test treats a TV as ad-free only when its interface contains no ads. Turning off personalized advertising alone does not meet that standard. Treat “fewer ads” and “less data collection” as two goals that require two sets of settings.

Which smart-TV platform gives you the most control?

No platform family guarantees an ad-free experience. The Federal Trade Commission describes Android/Fire TV, Samsung Tizen, Roku and LG web-based systems as distinct app and software ecosystems, and RTINGS finds that advertising and recommendation behavior varies by brand and model. Compare the exact television rather than assuming every set using the same platform behaves identically.

Google TV and Android TV

Google-based televisions differ substantially in whether they permit a limited, account-free setup. RTINGS’ current testing found a “basic TV” option on the Sony Bravia 8 II and TCL QM8K. That route is useful when you primarily need an antenna or HDMI inputs, but it can remove built-in apps, recommendations, voice features and other cloud services.

Do not generalize those results to every Google TV model. RTINGS found that the Hisense U8QG required a Google sign-in and acceptance of Google’s terms. Confirm the first-run flow for your model and region before purchase; a retailer’s display may already be signed in and hide the requirement.

Roku televisions

Roku documents that ACR is not enabled out of the box and can be disabled at Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. Its advertising controls can turn off personalized ads, reset the advertising ID, restrict sensitive categories and hide some individual home-screen ads. Hiding a particular ad does not create an empty home screen: Roku says replacement ads may appear.

Roku’s controls are therefore useful for reducing profiling and changing what is shown, but they should not be read as a promise of an entirely ad-free interface. Check the television’s current home screen and privacy menu, not just the Roku platform name.

Samsung, LG and other systems

Samsung Tizen, LG’s web-based platform and other proprietary systems expose different combinations of advertising, recommendations, voice and viewing-data settings. The Network Advertising Initiative documents advertising-ID controls for major platforms, but a platform-level description cannot tell you which switches a specific television exposes or what its defaults are. Download the exact model’s manual and look for the terms listed in the comparison table above.

Can you use a smart TV as a “dumb TV”?

Usually, yes, but the practical answer depends on the first-run wizard. A basic-TV mode can let the set function as a display for an antenna, game console, disc player or external streamer without signing in. If no such mode exists, you can often complete setup, disable optional services, disconnect the network and use HDMI inputs, although the manufacturer may still retain data collected before disconnection.

What you gain with a basic-TV or offline setup

  • No built-in app recommendations or platform home-screen promotions while the television is disconnected.
  • Less ongoing manufacturer visibility into what is playing through built-in services.
  • A simpler remote-and-input workflow if you use one external device for streaming.
  • The ability to replace the external streamer later without replacing the display.

What you give up

  • Built-in streaming apps, voice search and platform-specific recommendations may be unavailable in basic mode.
  • Firmware updates may require a temporary network connection or a USB process, depending on the model.
  • An external streamer still has its own account, advertising model and privacy controls; moving apps off the TV does not make streaming private.
  • Some televisions require an initial account or terms acceptance before they expose all inputs, so verify this before returning the set.

How do you compare ads on the home screen?

Look at the interface itself, not just the advertising-policy page. A TV passes a strict ad-free test only when no ads appear in the interface; an option that changes ads from targeted to generic is a privacy choice, not ad removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect every place promotional content can appear

  • Home rows: identify tiles labeled sponsored, featured, suggested or promoted.
  • Input and app screens: some interfaces insert recommendations when you change inputs or open the app launcher.
  • Screensavers and ambient modes: promotional artwork can appear even when the home screen looks clean.
  • Search and voice results: recommendations may be ranked or labeled separately from installed apps.
  • Notifications: promotional alerts can be delivered outside the home page.

Ask whether each item can be removed permanently. “Hide this ad” or “turn off personalization” may affect one placement or its targeting while leaving other promotional rows intact. Firmware updates can also change the location or default state of these controls.

What Roku’s controls actually do

Roku lets you turn off personalized ads, reset the advertising ID, restrict sensitive advertising categories and hide some individual home-screen ads. Roku warns that replacement ads may appear, so these controls reduce targeting or alter categories rather than guaranteeing an empty interface. If you enable a data setting and later disable it, Roku says information collected or used while it was enabled is retained.

How do you stop a TV from tracking what you watch?

Disable ACR and related viewing-information services separately from advertising settings. ACR is a distinct data pathway: Roku describes it as creating an encrypted fingerprint from screen pixels to match programs, and its support documentation provides a switch under Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience.

Why ACR matters even when you use HDMI

Depending on the implementation, ACR can identify content from antenna broadcasts, built-in apps, HDMI devices or USB playback. The exact scope is model-specific, so read the privacy notice and manual rather than assuming that an external box prevents measurement. Turning off personalized ads does not necessarily disable ACR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a clean sequence when changing privacy settings

  1. During setup, decline optional viewing-information, interactive-TV, voice-training and advertising-personalization features.
  2. Open the television’s privacy menu and switch off ACR, viewing data or viewing-information services where those labels appear.
  3. Review microphone, voice assistant and advertising-ID settings independently; one switch rarely covers all three.
  4. Record the date and the settings you changed. After a firmware update, check whether defaults or menu names changed.
  5. If minimizing manufacturer collection is more important than built-in apps, disconnect Wi-Fi and Ethernet after updates and use HDMI sources.

Disabling a feature stops future collection under that setting; it does not necessarily erase information already collected. Roku explicitly says data gathered while a setting was enabled is retained after you turn it off.

Which models allow a limited setup without a full smart-TV account?

Model-level evidence is more useful than a platform label. The following results come from RTINGS’ current setup testing and can change with firmware, region or a revised model number.

Model tested Setup result What to confirm before purchase
Sony Bravia 8 II Offered a “basic TV” path Which apps, recommendations and voice functions are removed when you choose basic mode
TCL QM8K Offered a “basic TV” path Whether the option remains available after a regional or firmware update
Hisense U8QG Required Google sign-in and acceptance of Google’s terms in RTINGS’ test Whether your region and current software still require sign-in, and which privacy controls appear afterward

These examples are not a permanent ranking. Use them to understand the question to ask: “Can I complete first-run setup with only inputs and broadcast, without an account?” If the answer is no, decide whether you are comfortable accepting the platform relationship before buying.

What should you check in the manual before buying?

Search the exact model number, not just the series name, and download the current manual or privacy notice for your country. Use the browser’s find function for these terms:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • ACR or automatic content recognition
  • Viewing data, viewing information services or interactive TV
  • Advertising ID, personalized ads or interest-based ads
  • Basic TV, use as display, skip account or set up later
  • Voice assistant, microphone, voice recordings or diagnostic data
  • Smart TV Experience, recommendations, sponsored content or promotional notifications

Then verify the setup wizard in a showroom video or returnable purchase. A manual may describe an option that is unavailable in a particular country, software version or retailer configuration. Ask specifically whether declining an account leaves HDMI inputs and over-the-air tuning usable.

How do you set up a new TV for the fewest ads and the least software?

  1. Choose the display plan first. Decide whether you will use built-in apps, an external streamer, an antenna, HDMI devices or a combination. This determines whether basic mode is practical.
  2. Connect only what you need for initial testing. Use the antenna and HDMI devices, but postpone Wi-Fi if the wizard allows it.
  3. Select the limited setup option. Choose “basic TV,” “use as display” or the equivalent skip-account path. Write down which functions disappear.
  4. Reject optional personalization. Decline personalized advertising, viewing-information services, voice-training and optional diagnostics unless you specifically need them.
  5. Review privacy menus one by one. Disable ACR, viewing data, advertising ID personalization, microphone access and promotional notifications where available.
  6. Inspect the home screen. Look for sponsored rows, featured tiles and screensaver promotions. Test whether each can be removed rather than merely hidden temporarily.
  7. Update deliberately. Install required firmware, then repeat the privacy and advertising review because menu names, defaults and available switches can change.
  8. Disconnect if appropriate. If the TV will be an HDMI display, remove Wi-Fi credentials and unplug Ethernet after updates. Configure privacy settings on the external streamer separately.

What are the common traps and how do you fix them?

Trap: confusing generic ads with no ads

Symptom: You disable personalized advertising but still see promotional tiles. Fix: Treat ad personalization and interface advertising as separate checks. If the platform provides no control to remove the tile or row, the interface is not ad-free.

Trap: assuming a platform behaves the same on every brand

Symptom: A review of one Google TV or Roku television does not match your model. Fix: Verify the exact model, software version and region. RTINGS’ contrasting results for Sony Bravia 8 II, TCL QM8K and Hisense U8QG show why model-level testing matters.

Trap: believing an external streamer eliminates tracking

Symptom: You disconnect the TV but the streamer still requests an account and shows recommendations. Fix: Audit the streamer’s advertising ID, viewing-data, voice and account settings. Offline TV use reduces the television manufacturer’s visibility but transfers the platform relationship to the streamer.

Trap: forgetting data collected before you opted out

Symptom: You disable ACR or personalized ads and expect earlier records to disappear. Fix: Check the provider’s deletion controls and retention language. Roku states that data collected or used while an enabled setting was active is retained after disabling it.

Trap: losing controls after an update

Symptom: A firmware update restores recommendations, changes menu names or adds a new consent screen. Fix: Re-run the privacy checklist after every major update and keep a note or photograph of the preferred settings.

Which setup fits your priorities?

Your priority Best starting configuration Main compromise
Fewest visible promotions A model with a genuinely clean interface or a basic-TV mode, used primarily with HDMI You may lose built-in apps and recommendations
Least manufacturer viewing data Basic or offline TV, ACR and viewing-information services disabled An external streamer still collects data under its own policy
Convenient built-in streaming Stay online, but disable ACR, personalized ads, advertising-ID use and promotional notifications Generic ads or sponsored rows may remain
No account during setup Choose a model documented to offer basic TV or skip-account setup Some platform features and apps may be unavailable
One remote and integrated apps Use the built-in platform and accept its account and privacy relationship More preinstalled software, recommendations and platform advertising

What is the practical buying rule?

Buy the television whose setup and privacy menus you can verify, not the one with the most attractive platform slogan. If a clean interface and minimal data collection are non-negotiable, prioritize a documented basic-TV path, keep the set offline after updates and treat the external streamer as a separate privacy decision. If convenience matters more, choose the exact model with the clearest ACR, advertising-ID and recommendation controls, then review those settings again whenever the firmware changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a smart TV without ever connecting it to Wi-Fi?

Usually you can use antenna channels and HDMI devices without a network connection, but some models require an online step before exposing every input. Confirm the first-run requirements for the exact regional model and complete any needed firmware update before disconnecting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does disabling a TV’s microphone also stop viewing-data collection?

No. Microphone, ACR, viewing-information services and advertising personalization are separate controls. Turn each off independently and check whether the set has a physical microphone switch or voice-assistant status indicator.

Will a factory reset erase all viewing data collected by the manufacturer?

A reset clears local settings and accounts on the television, but it does not automatically prove that a provider deleted server-side records. Use the provider’s account privacy or deletion controls and review its retention statement.

Can an antenna-only setup still show recommendations or ads?

Yes. Some interfaces generate promotions and recommendations at the platform level even when you watch only broadcast channels. A basic-TV or offline mode is more reliable than choosing an antenna as your sole input.
