Choose a reference monitor from the delivery standard backward: identify whether the master is Rec.709 SDR, P3 cinema, HDR10/PQ, HLG or another target, then match gamut, white point, transfer function, luminance, black level and signal format. A true reference display is justified when it is the mastering or quality-control authority, must accept SDI, or must provide scopes and metadata tools. For editing, visual effects and review, a measured and regularly calibrated computer monitor can be sufficient when final mastering happens elsewhere.

A wide-gamut label or an “HDR” badge is not proof of suitability. The monitor mode, workstation output path and calibration profile must all match the project standard.

How do I choose a reference monitor for video editing?

Start with the deliverable and client specification, not with a monitor brand or panel type. Write down the color space, transfer function, peak luminance, black-level expectation, bit depth and chroma format required for the final master. Then decide whether the display is a mastering reference or an editing screen that will be checked against a separate reference later.

  1. Identify the delivery target. Record Rec.709 SDR, P3 cinema, HDR10/PQ, HLG or BT.2020, including any client-specific Dolby Vision or broadcaster requirement.
  2. Translate it into measurable display settings. Specify gamut, D65 white point, luminance, EOTF, black level, bit depth and chroma handling.
  3. Match the workflow. Confirm the computer or video I/O device can output the required resolution, frame rate, bit depth and chroma format. Add SDI, LUT and scope functions only if your process needs them.

This approach prevents an expensive display from being used in the wrong mode. A monitor can cover a very wide gamut yet fail to track the project’s EOTF, clip highlights, raise blacks or receive a subsampled signal from the workstation.

What are the correct Rec.709 SDR targets?

For a conventional SDR video master, Dolby’s published target is BT.709 gamut, D65 white point and about 100 nits peak luminance. Use BT.1886 (Gamma 2.4) or the gamma specified by the workflow; gamma 2.2, 2.4 and 2.6 are all used in defined production environments.

Set the transfer function deliberately

“Rec.709” identifies the color primaries and gamut, not a complete monitor setup. The EOTF or gamma determines how code values become light. A display set to a generic sRGB or “cinema” mode may use a different tone curve, so check the actual mode and measure it rather than relying on the label.

Use the room when choosing luminance

The approximately 100-nit target assumes a controlled viewing environment. Excessive room light can make a correctly calibrated screen look dim and encourage an operator to raise luminance, while a very dark room can make the same image appear too bright. Keep ambient lighting stable and neutral, and document any client-required viewing condition.

What should an HDR reference monitor deliver?

HDR selection requires more than a high peak-brightness number. Dolby’s 2026 Tier 1 guidance calls for at least 1,000 nits peak luminance, a black level no higher than 0.001 nits, selectable P3, BT.2020 and BT.709 gamut options, D65 white point, SMPTE 2084 PQ or BT.1886/Gamma 2.4 EOTF, 12-bit input support and RGB 4:4:4 handling.

Requirement Why it matters What to verify
Peak luminance Determines whether specular highlights can be shown without clipping or compression. Measured sustained and peak output; do not rely only on an HDR badge.
Black level Controls shadow detail and perceived contrast in dark scenes. Measured black level, plus behavior of local dimming zones.
Gamut Sets the range of colors available to the master. P3, BT.2020 and BT.709 modes appropriate to the project.
EOTF Maps signal values to light and determines image brightness. Accurate PQ for HDR10, HLG behavior where required, and documented tracking.
Signal precision Reduces banding and preserves grading adjustments. 12-bit input for a Tier 1 workflow and RGB 4:4:4 where specified.

EBU Recommendation R 167, version 1.1 (May 2025), provides predefined HLG modes for reference monitors capable of more than 1,000 cd/m² peak luminance. If your delivery is HLG, confirm that the monitor implements the required HLG mode rather than assuming a PQ preset is interchangeable.

How should I interpret Tier 2 HDR displays?

Dolby’s Tier 2 category is aimed at editing, VFX, review and education and has lower minimums than Tier 1. A Tier 2 screen can be a sensible production monitor when another display performs final mastering, but it should not silently become the facility’s image-quality authority. Obtain the client or studio specification before approving it for mastering.

Do I need a true reference display or a calibrated computer monitor?

Use a true reference display when the screen is the mastering or QC authority, when the facility requires SDI, or when a client specifies a reference tier. Use a calibrated computer monitor for editing, VFX, review and approval when final mastering is performed elsewhere, provided its measured mode and signal path match the project target.

Workflow need More appropriate choice Reason
Final mastering and client sign-off True reference display Strict EOTF and color-standard conformance, stable output and dedicated monitoring controls.
SDI-based broadcast or post facility True reference display Direct SDI input, often including 12G-SDI, avoids dependence on an operating-system display path.
Editing and VFX with external mastering Calibrated computer monitor Lower complexity is acceptable when the final image is checked on the mastering reference.
Review on a laptop or desktop timeline Calibrated computer monitor Useful for creative work, but verify the selected mode and output format against the target.

Dolby describes a reference display as a specialized device intended to serve as a true image-quality reference. Such displays commonly add waveform and vectorscope monitors, false-color analysis, LUT import and signal-metadata detection. These tools improve control and diagnosis; they do not compensate for inaccurate luminance, gamut or EOTF.

Which monitor specifications matter most?

Compare candidates against the project’s requirements in the following order. A strong specification in one row cannot make up for a failure in another.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Delivery target Does the monitor provide the required Rec.709, P3, BT.2020, HDR10/PQ or HLG mode?
Calibration Is there a hardware LUT, built-in sensor, external colorimeter support and a documented recalibration process?
Luminance and blacks What are the sustained SDR level, HDR peak, measured blacks and local-dimming behavior?
Color and signal path Are 10-bit or 12-bit input, RGB 4:4:4, resolution, frame rate and chroma format supported end to end?
Connectivity Will the workflow use HDMI or DisplayPort, or does it require SDI, LUT loading and metadata handling?
Environment and size Is uniformity stable across the panel, is the viewing angle appropriate, and can the screen fit the intended viewing distance and room?

Why sustained brightness matters more than a headline peak

HDR peak output may be available only in a small window or for a short period. Ask for sustained behavior, thermal stability and local-dimming transitions. A display that dims aggressively during long bright scenes can alter grading decisions even if its brief peak number looks impressive.

Check chroma and bit depth through the entire chain

A 10-bit panel is not automatically receiving a 10-bit RGB 4:4:4 signal. Confirm the GPU, cable, operating-system setting, application output and monitor input. Chroma subsampling or an 8-bit bottleneck can obscure fine color differences and create banding before the image reaches the panel.

How do calibration and profiling keep colors consistent?

Calibration and profiling are complementary. The International Color Consortium explains that calibration sets the display’s behavior, while profiling communicates that behavior to color-managed applications and other devices. Both are needed when you want the same creative intent to survive from grading screen to downstream output.

  1. Choose the target first. Set the intended gamut, D65 white point, luminance and EOTF in the calibration software. For SDR this commonly means BT.709, D65 and approximately 100 nits; HDR targets must follow the project’s PQ or HLG specification.
  2. Stabilize the display. Let the panel reach its normal operating temperature and disable dynamic picture modes, automatic contrast and unapproved eye-comfort filters.
  3. Measure and adjust. Use the built-in sensor or a supported external colorimeter to create the hardware-LUT correction where available. Record the instrument, target and date.
  4. Create or update the profile. Profile the calibrated state so the operating system and color-managed applications know how the display reproduces color.
  5. Verify the result. Check grayscale, primaries, secondaries, EOTF tracking, luminance and uniformity with the same signal format used in production.
  6. Schedule recalibration. Repeat at a documented interval and after major changes, repairs or relocation. A profile describes the state measured at calibration; it cannot correct later drift.

Factory calibration is useful at installation, but it does not remove the need for verification in your room and signal path. Hardware calibration, a built-in sensor or supported colorimeter makes repeatability easier; choose the option your team can actually maintain.

What connectivity and monitoring tools should a grading setup have?

HDMI and DisplayPort are practical for computer-based editing, but the operating system may apply scaling, color management or range conversions. A dedicated video I/O path and SDI input can provide a more controlled route for broadcast and finishing workflows. Dolby notes that professional reference displays may include 12G-SDI, scopes, false color, LUT import and metadata detection.

Choose SDI when the facility requires it

Confirm the exact SDI speed, connector configuration, supported resolutions and frame rates. “SDI” alone does not establish that a monitor accepts your required 4K or high-frame-rate signal.

Use scopes for measurement, not decoration

Waveform and vectorscope displays help identify illegal levels, gamut excursions and exposure errors without relying solely on eyesight. False color can reveal luminance zones quickly. Keep the scope fed from the same signal path that reaches the panel.

Plan LUT and metadata handling

If your workflow uses display LUTs, verify the format, import method and whether the LUT affects the panel, the input or only the preview. HDR metadata detection is valuable when the monitor must switch or report modes, but it does not replace checking the actual EOTF and peak behavior.

How do room, size and ergonomics affect the choice?

Viewing distance should determine screen size and resolution. A large 4K or 6K panel viewed too closely can make uniformity and angle differences obvious; a small screen viewed too far away hides shadow and highlight detail. Place the monitor so the intended viewing position is centered and consistent for everyone approving the image.

  • Control ambient light: avoid daylight swings and colored wall reflections that change perceived white balance.
  • Check uniformity: inspect corners and edges with neutral gray and saturated test patches, not only the center.
  • Manage heat and fans: thermal changes can alter brightness or noise in a quiet grading room.
  • Allow ergonomic adjustment: height, tilt and rotation should support a fixed, repeatable viewing geometry.

What is a practical buying and acceptance checklist?

  1. Obtain the delivery specification from the client, studio or broadcaster before comparing models.
  2. Write the required gamut and EOTF beside it: Rec.709/BT.1886 for SDR, or P3/BT.2020 with PQ or HLG for HDR and cinema.
  3. Set the luminance and black-level requirement for the room and mastering tier.
  4. Confirm 10-bit or 12-bit handling and RGB 4:4:4 where required, including the workstation’s real output path.
  5. Inspect uniformity, viewing angle, local dimming, thermal stability, fan noise and ergonomic placement.
  6. Prefer hardware calibration, a built-in sensor or supported colorimeter, and a documented recalibration schedule.
  7. Add SDI, LUT, scopes and metadata functions only when the workflow needs them.
  8. Before acceptance, measure the candidate in its production mode and obtain written approval against the current client or studio requirement.

What common mistakes cause grading mismatches?

Buying by gamut percentage alone

A wide-gamut panel can still use the wrong white point or EOTF. Select the project mode and verify it with measurements.

Assuming an HDR badge means mastering capability

Check sustained and peak luminance, black level, local dimming, EOTF tracking, bit depth, chroma format, thermal stability and calibration controls. Dolby does not certify one universal professional display for every Dolby Vision workflow, so consult the client or studio for that requirement.

Ignoring the computer’s color path

The application, GPU driver and operating system can convert range, gamma or chroma before the signal reaches the monitor. Use a known video output path and document its settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skipping recalibration after a move

Room lighting, temperature and panel age affect the viewing result. Re-measure after relocation, repairs or major configuration changes rather than trusting an old profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I grade Rec.709 on a wide-gamut monitor?

Yes, if the display has a measured Rec.709 mode with the required D65 white point, luminance and gamma. Leave the monitor in that mode for the SDR job; native wide-gamut operation can make colors appear oversaturated in an unmanaged path.

Is a built-in calibration sensor better than an external colorimeter?

Neither is automatically more accurate. A built-in sensor improves convenience and repeatability, while an external instrument may offer better flexibility across display types; use a device supported by the monitor and calibration software, then verify the result independently.

Do I need 12-bit output for every HDR project?

No. The 12-bit and RGB 4:4:4 requirements cited here apply to Dolby’s Tier 1 reference guidance. Editing or review systems may use lower minimums, but the required precision must come from the client, studio or delivery specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should a reference monitor be recalibrated?

Use the manufacturer’s and facility’s documented schedule, and recalibrate after relocation, repair, major firmware or signal-path changes. The correct interval depends on panel stability, operating hours and the tolerance your client accepts.
