Then set startup behavior, new-tab behavior, search, and privacy controls separately. A homepage choice by itself does not make all your browsing private, and there is no documented universal fastest homepage; compare performance on your own device and connection.
Homepage, startup page, new-tab page, and search are different settings
These settings can work together, but they control different moments and actions.
- Homepage: The page opened when you select the browser’s Home button. Google Chrome Help puts it simply: “Your homepage is the one you go to when you select Home.”
- Startup page: What appears when you launch the browser. Chrome Help explains: “Your startup page is the one that shows when you first launch Chrome on your device.” It may be a new-tab page or, depending on your setting, the tabs you had open previously.
- New-tab page: What appears when you open a new tab. It may show a search box, shortcuts, recommendations, or recent activity, depending on the browser and your settings.
- Default search engine: The service used when you search from the address bar or a search box. It is not necessarily the same as the page you see at startup.
- Browser privacy controls: Settings and protections that affect tracking or security while you browse. These are separate from selecting a homepage or search provider.
Choose the kind of page that fits your routine
Consider how much you value a clean launch versus built-in tools and content. A simpler page can reduce visible clutter; a browser-provided or search-provider page may make shortcuts, search, or recommendations easier to reach.

For speed, treat these choices as options to test, not as ranked products. The official documentation cited here explains settings and features; it does not establish a controlled comparison showing which homepage loads or starts fastest across devices and connections. Try your preferred setup on your own device and network, and compare the behavior you actually notice.

Set homepage and startup behavior in Chrome
Chrome’s desktop help distinguishes startup behavior from the Home button. Interface names and availability can vary by version and device, so check the settings in your current Chrome installation.
- Open Chrome’s menu and go to Settings.
- Use On startup to choose what appears when Chrome launches. The documented choices include opening the New Tab page or continuing where you left off.
- Find the Home button setting and choose whether it opens the New Tab page or a custom page. This controls what happens when you select Home; it does not by itself set the startup page.
If your homepage, startup page, or search engine changes unexpectedly, Google says unwanted software may be responsible and points users toward resetting browser settings. Check for changes you did not make rather than assuming the new page is simply a normal browser update.

Set homepage and new-tab behavior in Firefox
Firefox’s Home settings cover homepage and new-window behavior as well as new tabs. Open the menu, choose Settings, then select Home.
- For homepage and new-window behavior, choose Firefox Home, a blank page, or a custom URL.
- Set new-tab content separately. Firefox’s documented options can include web search, shortcuts, recommendations, and recent activity.
- To change the search provider, open Settings and select Search.
- For browser privacy protections, open Settings and select Privacy & Security; Firefox includes Enhanced Tracking Protection controls there.
Exact labels and available options can change across Firefox versions and devices. The key distinction remains: selecting a homepage or new-tab layout does not replace the separate search and privacy settings.

A search provider is not a browser-wide privacy setting
Setting a privacy-oriented search service as your homepage—or using it for searches—does not automatically protect activity on every other website you visit. DuckDuckGo says its search engine alone does not provide its tracking protections on other sites; it points users to its extension or browser for those protections. That is DuckDuckGo’s description of its products, not an independent comparative audit.
DuckDuckGo also says its Chrome extension changes the browser’s search engine and adds privacy features. If you install it, distinguish those extension features from simply visiting DuckDuckGo’s website or selecting it as your search provider. In Firefox, search-engine selection and Enhanced Tracking Protection are likewise separate controls.

Check the browser and device you actually use
Settings differ by browser, version, and device. The instructions above cover Chrome desktop and Firefox; they are not a walkthrough for every browser. Brave’s help documentation says its default search engine can be selected separately for normal and private windows, but that information alone does not establish a full homepage setup comparison. Look for your browser’s current official instructions before following a path that does not match your menus.
