PSA is the default to consider when resale is the priority; CGC is worth a look for lower-fee submissions or a personal collection; and Beckett stands out if you value four visible subgrades or want the possibility of a Black Label. The right choice depends on the exact card, its condition, the service currently accepting submissions, and what comparable copies have actually sold for. A PSA Gem Mint 10, CGC Gem Mint 10, CGC Pristine 10, and Beckett Black Label 10 are distinct grades—not interchangeable versions of “10.”

The U.S. direct-submission fees and availability below were checked October 30, 2026. Fees are not all-in costs, turnaround estimates are not guarantees, and no grader can promise a grade or resale premium.

Name Best for Key spec Listed price Checked
PSA Owners weighing resale and comparable sales Gem Mint 10; Standard includes front-and-back imaging Standard: $59.99 per card; Value services temporarily paused Oct 2026
CGC Cards Budget submissions or personal collections Separate Gem Mint 10 and Pristine 10 grades Bulk: $17 per card, 25-card minimum Oct 2026
Beckett (BGS) Collectors who want subgrades or value the Black Label distinction Four subgrades; Black Label reserved for perfect 10s Express: $79.95 per card; Submit Now Oct 2026

The practical answer is conditional. A valuable card intended for sale often merits a PSA-versus-comparable-sales analysis. A cheaper card or a keepsake may fit CGC’s lower listed fees, provided grading itself adds enough utility to justify the expense. A very clean card owned by someone who wants detailed diagnostics can make Beckett attractive, but no company promises a particular grade, a Black Label, a resale premium, or a completion date.

Is PSA or CGC better for Pokémon cards?

Neither is best for every card. Consider PSA first if you expect to sell and want to compare against a large set of PSA-graded completed sales; consider CGC if its lower listed entry fee suits your budget or the card is primarily for your collection. The answer can change between a high-value vintage card, a modern chase card, and a sentimental card that you never intend to sell.

A Pokémon card’s likely grade and the exact label matter as much as the company name. Before choosing, look up completed sales for the same card, language, variant, and grade. A sale for another printing or language may not be a useful comparison, and population counts alone do not establish market value or rarity.

Choose by the card’s purpose

  • Resale: Compare plausible sale proceeds for this specific card at realistic grades. PSA can be a useful starting point for that comparison, but it does not always sell for more. Folio’s same-card analysis found a higher median for BGS Pristine 10 than PSA 10 in its selected sample.
  • Personal collection: Decide whether the slab, label, and grading cost add enough to your enjoyment to justify the expense. A lower grading fee does not automatically make grading an inexpensive card worthwhile.
  • Subgrades or a distinctive top label: Beckett is the option here with four displayed condition subgrades and the possibility of a Black Label. Those features are not a promise that a card will receive a particular grade.
  • Protection only: A slab can provide a standardized holder and an authentication-and-grade record, but compare that benefit with a quality raw-card storage solution and the total submission cost.

How much does it cost to grade a Pokémon card?

The listed direct-submission fees vary by tier, and advertised services may be paused or sold out. The table records the U.S. service snapshot checked October 30, 2026; confirm the live page and applicable eligibility rules before submitting.

PSA’s page can show a Value price while identifying Value services as temporarily paused. Treat that as a displayed price, not a bookable offer. Beckett can likewise display prices on tiers marked sold out. Availability is part of the product: a lower advertised tier does not help if you cannot submit through it.

The times are the graders’ listed estimates, in business or working days—not guaranteed door-to-door delivery times. CGC states, “Turnaround times are estimates only and are NOT guaranteed.” PSA’s official U.S. page lists 70–80 business days for Standard; older comparisons quoting 90–100 business days should not replace that current listed figure. For Beckett, a fee shown on a sold-out tier does not mean that tier is open for submission.

What the fee does—and does not—tell you

The listed grading fee is not the total cost. Add outbound and return shipping, any applicable extras, and selling expenses if you plan to sell. These can change whether grading makes financial sense, particularly for a card with a modest ungraded value. For a group submission, also account for the organizer’s handling charge and the time your cards are away from you, if either applies.

The limits are worded differently: PSA’s cited Standard tier states a maximum insured value, while CGC’s tiers state maximum fair market values. Do not assume those are identical contractual terms. A card that exceeds a tier’s limit may require a different service or a different declaration. Consult the relevant grader’s submission page for definitions, insurance language, declared-value rules, and current requirements.

Which tier fits a batch?

CGC Bulk is $17 per card but requires at least 25 cards and lists a maximum fair market value of $500 per card. That minimum can make the tier economical for a genuine batch, yet wasteful if you are adding marginal cards merely to reach 25. CGC Economy and Standard remove that particular minimum in the listed snapshot but cost more per card and have different value limits and estimated times. PSA Standard is priced per card, while PSA Value is not currently a dependable submission route while paused. Compare the complete batch total, not only the lowest unit price.

Are PSA, CGC, and Beckett 10s the same grade?

No. A numerical 10 does not mean the same label or grading standard across all three companies. Compare the full designation, not just the number.

PSA Gem Mint 10

PSA calls its top standard grade Gem Mint 10 and describes it as “a virtually perfect card.” Its published standards give approximate centering tolerances of no worse than 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse, while acknowledging a subjective component in eye appeal. PSA also evaluates the card’s overall presentation rather than reducing the result to a single mechanical measurement. See PSA’s grading standards.

CGC Gem Mint 10 and Pristine 10

CGC distinguishes Gem Mint 10 from its higher Pristine 10 designation, which has its own label. The published centering tolerance is approximately 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse for Gem Mint 10, and 50/50 for Pristine 10. A CGC Pristine 10 should not be collapsed into the same label as a CGC Gem Mint 10 simply because both display a 10. If you are comparing listings, write down the exact CGC designation before comparing prices.

Beckett Gem Mint, Pristine, and Black Label

Beckett grades centering, corners, edges, and surface and displays four subgrades. Its labels include Gem Mint 9.5 and Pristine 10; the Black Label is reserved for perfect 10s. Beckett’s published Black Label centering criterion is 50/50 on the front and at least 55/45 on the back. A BGS 10 is not automatically a Black Label, and BGS 9.5 should not be treated as equivalent to another grader’s 10. The subgrades let a buyer see where a card excelled or fell short, which is useful to collectors who value that information even when the headline grade is not perfect.

What do completed sales suggest about resale value?

One Pokémon-specific analysis offers a useful, limited reference point—not a universal price list. Folio compared median completed-sale prices for the same cards, requiring at least three completed sales per compared label, using data as of October 5, 2026.

Label compared with PSA 10 Reported median price ratio Scope
CGC Gem Mint 10 0.44× PSA 10 Folio’s qualifying same-card comparisons, as of Oct. 5, 2026
BGS 9.5 0.60× PSA 10 Folio’s qualifying same-card comparisons, as of Oct. 5, 2026
BGS Pristine 10 1.53× PSA 10 Folio’s qualifying same-card comparisons across 96 cards, as of Oct. 5, 2026

These are observed medians for the selected cards and labels in Folio’s Pokémon grading analysis, not promises about what a particular card will sell for. In particular, the BGS Pristine result is not evidence that an arbitrary submission will receive Pristine 10 or that every Black Label sells for that multiple. In Folio’s qualifying population-report comparisons, Beckett awarded a 10 to a median 0.6% of copies; that selected-sample median is not an individual card’s probability of earning a 10.

Market conditions also change. Language, set, rarity, print run, buyer preferences, venue, timing, and the exact label can all affect a completed sale. Compare several recent completed transactions when available, and distinguish a true sale from an unsold listing or an asking price. PSA maintains an auction-prices resource; use it as a price-discovery aid rather than a guarantee.

For a decision about one card, estimate possible sale proceeds at plausible grade outcomes, then subtract the card’s purchase basis if relevant, grading fees, shipping, selling expenses, and the cost of waiting. Compare that result with selling it ungraded or keeping it. Population reports may inform a question about graded-copy counts, but CGC cautions that counts are not indicators of value or rarity.

How can you decide whether a specific Pokémon card is worth grading?

Start with the exact card and a realistic condition assessment, then compare likely net outcomes—not just headline sale prices. Grading is a cost and a delay as well as a possible change in how a card is presented and sold.

  1. Identify the exact card. Match the card, language, set, number, first-edition or unlimited status, holo or reverse-holo treatment, promo designation, and any variant when looking for completed sales. Do not substitute a different printing just because it has the same character or artwork.
  2. Assess condition without assuming a grade. Look at centering, corners, edges, and surface, the areas Beckett explicitly evaluates. Check for whitening, dents, scratches, print lines, stains, bends, creases, and pressure marks under even light. A loupe can help inspect details, but inspection cannot establish what grade a company will assign.
  3. Find comparable completed sales. Compare the relevant grader and full grade label, using the same card where possible. Asking prices and population counts are not substitutes for completed-sale evidence.
  4. Choose plausible outcomes, not a hoped-for best case. Consider more than one likely grade outcome and the possibility that the card does not receive a top grade. No grader promises a grade or a premium.
  5. Calculate net proceeds and compare alternatives. Subtract grading, shipping, applicable extras, selling expenses, and the value of waiting. Compare grading with selling ungraded or keeping the card.
  6. Confirm the open tier fits the card. Check the current service status, turnaround estimate, and applicable value limit or minimum. A listed fee for a paused or sold-out tier is not a submission option.

Scenario: valuable vintage card for resale. Concentrate on the exact card’s PSA, CGC, and BGS completed-sale spread, then test conservative grades in your calculation. A high raw value does not guarantee a high slab value if condition issues cap the grade.

Scenario: inexpensive modern card. Calculate whether even a strong grade can recover grading, shipping, and selling costs. CGC’s lower listed fee may reduce the hurdle, but a low fee does not turn every inexpensive card into a profitable submission.

Scenario: exceptionally clean card for a collection. If seeing centering, corners, edges, and surface subgrades is part of the appeal, Beckett may fit the collecting goal. Treat Black Label as an outcome that requires perfect published subgrades, not as a reasonable base-case assumption.

This framework can lead to different choices for a valuable vintage card and a low-cost modern card. The card’s likely outcome and intended use matter more than a blanket rule about which company is “best.”

How should you pack a card for grading?

Follow the chosen grader’s current packing directions; the sequence below is CGC-specific. CGC instructs submitters to protect the card in a sleeve and semi-rigid holder, then cushion it in a larger cardboard sandwich inside a sturdy box.

  1. Place the card in a protective card sleeve.
  2. Put the sleeved card into a standard-size semi-rigid holder suitable for grading submissions.
  3. Place the holder between pieces of cardboard larger than the cards.
  4. Add cushioning and use a sturdy box.
  5. Avoid binding or packing the contents so tightly that pressure could damage the cards.

See CGC’s card-shipping instructions for its complete packing guidance. Do not assume the same packing procedure applies to another grader; check that company’s own instructions before shipping. Keep a record of the card list, declared values, tracking number, and photographs of the packed shipment. Those records do not improve a grade, but they help you reconcile a submission and shipping claim if a problem occurs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you check before submitting?

  • Confirm that the exact tier is open today, rather than relying on an old comparison article.
  • Read the tier’s value limit, minimum-card rule, insurance language, and eligibility requirements.
  • Verify whether the stated turnaround is in business or working days and whether it excludes transit time.
  • Price outbound and return shipping, taxes, optional services, and any selling fees.
  • Photograph the front and back of each card and record identifying details before packing.
  • Use the grader’s own submission form and packing instructions; do not infer requirements from a different company.

How did we choose the comparison criteria?

This comparison centers on the factors that can change a submitter’s decision: resale versus keeping, the exact grade label, condition and likely grade, fee and tier availability, value limits, estimated turnaround, subgrades, and completed sales for the exact card. The service snapshot uses the graders’ U.S. direct-submission pages checked October 30, 2026; the sales figures are attributed to Folio and retain its sample and date qualifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I grade a card just to protect it, without planning to sell?

Yes. A slab can be part of a personal collecting goal, but protection alone does not show that the fee is worthwhile. Compare the cost and shipping with how you want to store and enjoy the card.

Does a grading population report show how many copies of a Pokémon card exist?

It shows copies recorded by that grading company, not a census of every copy in existence. Different graders’ reports cover different submissions, so a count should not be read as the total supply of a card or as proof of rarity.

Should I send a whole Pokémon set for grading?

Only if the costs and expected outcomes make sense for the individual cards you plan to submit. A multi-card tier can have requirements such as a minimum submission size, and each card still has its own condition and potential outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Beckett Black Label better than a PSA 10?

They are different designations. Beckett’s Black Label is reserved for perfect 10 subgrades, while PSA’s top standard label is Gem Mint 10. Compare recent sales for the exact card and label instead of assuming one always commands more.

How long will grading take?

The listed estimates checked October 30, 2026 range from 10 working days for CGC Standard to 150 working days for CGC Bulk, with PSA Standard at 70–80 business days and Beckett Express at 15 business days. These are estimates, exclude or may not include transit, and are not guarantees.

Can I use a price shown for a paused or sold-out service?

No. PSA Value was shown at $39.99 while Value services were temporarily paused, and Beckett Base, Standard, and Priority were marked sold out in the checked snapshot. Confirm that a tier accepts submissions before relying on its price.

What is the cheapest way to grade one Pokémon card?

A single-card submission cannot use CGC Bulk’s listed $17 rate because Bulk requires 25 cards. Compare the currently open individual-card tiers, then add shipping and other charges; the lowest posted fee is not necessarily the lowest total cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose a grader based only on population counts?

No. Population reports reflect that company’s submitted and recorded cards, not total supply, and CGC cautions that counts are not indicators of value or rarity. Use exact-card completed sales and your own cost calculation.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with PSA when resale comparability is the priority, evaluate CGC when its current lower-fee tier fits the card or collection, and choose Beckett when four subgrades or the Black Label distinction is central to your goal. Confirm the live U.S. tier, calculate the full cost, compare exact-card completed sales, and pack the card according to the chosen grader’s instructions.
