After power, check the number and speed of ports, uplink capacity, and whether you need managed-network features.
Start with the power requirements of your cameras and access points
For every device, check its datasheet or hardware label for the required IEEE PoE standard and power rating. The device determines the minimum standard its switch port must support; a port with a lower power capability cannot meet a device’s higher requirement. Higher-standard equipment can power lower-power devices when both products support the arrangement, but verify compatibility in the exact device and switch documentation.
Standards describe maximum power, not what every camera or access point consumes. The following figures are standard-level maxima summarized by TP-Link’s PoE switch guide, published August 4, 2026. Power available at the device is lower than power delivered at the switch port because some is lost over the cable.
| PoE standard | Maximum at switch port | Maximum available at device |
|---|---|---|
| IEEE 802.3af (PoE) | 15.4 W | 12.95 W |
| IEEE 802.3at (PoE+) | 30 W | 25.5 W |
| IEEE 802.3bt Type 3 | 60 W | 51 W |
| IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 | 90 W | 71.3 W |
Do not rely on a broad label such as “PoE++” alone: it can refer to different power tiers. Record the required standard and rated or class power for each endpoint, including any device feature that raises its power needs.

Calculate the total PoE budget you need
Per-port power and total PoE budget are separate limits. A switch might support a given PoE standard on many ports but lack the shared power supply to run every port at its maximum simultaneously. Add the relevant reserved power for all connected devices, then compare that sum with the switch’s published total PoE budget.
- Inventory endpoints: List each camera and access point and note its required PoE standard and rated or class power from its documentation.
- Calculate the connected load: Multiply each device’s relevant reserved power by the number of those devices, then add the results. Do not use only a low idle or typical draw if the switch reserves power according to the device’s declared class.
- Add planning headroom: Omada recommends a 10–15% margin; this is vendor planning guidance, not an IEEE requirement. Use more headroom if the device list is uncertain or likely to grow.
- Check both limits: Confirm the switch has a suitable PoE port for every endpoint and a total PoE budget above the planned load.
For example, Omada Network Support’s PoE setup guidance, published in 2026, adds four PoE+ access points rated at 30 W each to get 120 W. Applying its recommended 15% margin gives a minimum budget of 138 W. This is an example calculation, not a universal requirement for four access points.

Choose enough ports for the installation
Count every PoE-powered device: cameras, access points, and any planned additions. Then check that the switch has enough suitable PoE ports—not merely enough ports in total. If you also need to connect non-PoE equipment directly, account for those ports separately. Planning for likely expansion can prevent an otherwise adequate switch from becoming a bottleneck.
Match port and uplink speeds to the traffic
Choose speed based on the endpoints and the traffic path through the network, not on PoE wattage. Consider each camera’s bitrate, the combined traffic headed to the recorder, the access points’ wired-interface capabilities, and the link from the switch to the router, recorder, or network core.

TP-Link’s selection guide describes 100 Mb/s as sufficient for camera systems and gigabit or multi-gigabit as options for scalability. Treat that as general guidance, not a guarantee for every installation: validate port and uplink capacity against actual device rates and topology. A fast access-point port will not help if the uplink carrying its traffic is undersized.
Decide whether you need a managed switch
PoE does not require a managed switch. An unmanaged model can suit a basic installation that only needs connectivity and power. Managed models may offer VLANs or traffic separation, prioritization, monitoring, automatic PoE recovery, or centralized administration. Those features are useful when the network needs them and someone will configure and maintain them.

- More Ports, PoE Ready: UGREEN ethernet switch offers 8 PoE+ (802.3at/af) Gigabit ports (up to 30W each) and 2 Gigabit uplink ports, with a total power budget of 60W. Ideal for efficient power delivery and seamless network connectivity
- Intelligent Power Management: If power exceeds 60W, it cuts ports in priority order (8–1) to prevent overload. It auto-detects PoE devices, supplies power to them, and transmits data only to non-PoE devices. Short-circuited ports shut off independently
- PoE Auto Recovery: In Extend Mode, ports 1–6 automatically detect and restart powered devices (such as cameras or access points) when they go offline or freeze, ensuring stable PoE operation without manual monitoring or restart
- One Touch, Three Modes: The unmanaged ethernet switch can easily switch between Standard, Port Isolation (VLAN), and Extend with one button. Port Isolation separates ports 1–8 to prevent network storms. Extend mode supports PoE up to 820 ft, ideal for security systems and long-distance deployment
- High-Speed, Low Latency: The ethernet splitter offers 1000Mbps connectivity for real-time, lag-free monitoring with security cameras, efficient IP phone connections for work, and enhanced performance for wireless access points across your network
Feature availability varies by model. Check the exact switch documentation for the controls you need rather than assuming every managed PoE switch includes the same capabilities. Omada discusses this distinction in its PoE switch guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a switch or individual injectors for the topology
A PoE switch is a convenient way to power several cameras and access points from one network device. If you are keeping an existing non-PoE switch and need to power an individual endpoint, a PoE injector is another option; match its standard and wattage to that device. Omada’s setup guide describes both switch-to-device and injector arrangements.

Check the exact model and installation conditions
Before selecting a model, verify its published total PoE budget, per-port PoE support, power-supply rating, port count and speeds, and required management features. Also check the manufacturer’s limits for the intended environment and installation, along with practical needs such as noise and mounting. Product and environmental limits can affect the available power budget, so do not assume that a headline port rating tells the whole story.
