The right fitness tracker is the one that supports the activity or habit you care about and feels comfortable enough to wear consistently. Before comparing models, decide what you want to track, check that the device works with your phone, and weigh features such as GPS, battery life, water resistance and subscriptions against your actual routine.
Start with what you want to track
Ask yourself: What do I want to track? A simple device may be enough for daily steps, general activity and movement reminders. Sleep tracking matters if you intend to wear the tracker overnight. For gym sessions, look for support for the activities you actually do. Outdoor runners, cyclists or hikers may place greater value on route tracking and GPS.
Make a shortlist of one or two primary jobs rather than treating every sensor or feature as essential. Cleveland Clinic puts the value of a tracker in perspective: “Fitness trackers give you information about your body and your activity,” says certified personal trainer Curt Fischer, CPT. “What really matters is how you use that information to stay consistent and keep moving.” Cleveland Clinic also quotes Fischer: “They don’t improve your health on their own. What matters is that you wear them, review your stats and stay active.”
Choose a form you will wear
Fitness trackers come in different forms, including wrist-worn watches and bands, clip-on devices and rings. Consider when you plan to wear yours: a sleep tracker needs to be comfortable in bed, while a device for outdoor workouts may need a secure fit and a display you can check during activity. Try to judge comfort as part of the buying decision, not as an afterthought; a feature is of little use if the device spends most of its time in a drawer.

Will it work with your phone?
Check the exact model’s phone and companion-app requirements before buying. Some wearable features are tied to a particular brand’s ecosystem, and compatibility can vary by phone, region and feature. Confirm that your phone is supported and that the functions you want—such as notifications, activity history or health insights—are available for your setup. Do not assume a device will work fully just because its app appears in your phone’s app store.
Do you need built-in GPS?
For outdoor routes, find out whether a tracker has built-in GPS or uses connected GPS from your phone. Built-in GPS can record a route without relying on the phone’s GPS sensors, but it can use more of the wearable’s battery. Connected GPS relies on the phone, its location permissions and staying close enough for the connection to work.
Google’s Fitbit and Pixel Watch GPS instructions explain that connected GPS uses phone sensors and require the phone to remain nearby with appropriate location permissions. They also note that built-in GPS can drain the wearable battery more quickly. If you usually exercise with your phone, connected GPS may suit your routine; if you want to leave it behind, look for built-in GPS on the exact model.

How often will you need to charge it?
Battery life affects whether a tracker fits your day and night routine. Compare the manufacturer’s stated battery expectations for the exact model and consider how GPS, screen use and other features affect them. Also check how it charges and whether you are willing to remove it regularly. If you want sleep tracking, account for charging time so the device is available overnight.

Readings are not all equally dependable. Cleveland Clinic says heart-rate tracking tends to be fairly accurate when a tracker is worn properly, while some advanced measures are estimates and may be off. Treat consumer wearable readings as useful for awareness and trends, not as exact measurements or medical diagnoses. If one particular metric matters to you, look for information about that metric on the exact device rather than assuming that more sensors mean better results.
Check water resistance and the band together
Water resistance is model-specific, and the band can have separate limits. A generic “water resistant” label does not establish that a tracker is suitable for swimming. Check the exact device’s rating and permitted activities, then check whether the included band material is appropriate for water or workouts.

That is an Apple-specific example, not a specification that applies to other trackers. See Apple’s wearing and care guidance for its device and band details.

Match the device category to your activity
A basic band, a general-purpose smartwatch and a dedicated fitness watch serve different needs. If you mainly want everyday movement tracking, you may not need a watch built around endurance training. If you regularly train outdoors or want more activity-specific features, compare dedicated fitness watches as well as simpler bands. Garmin’s US fitness-tracking wearable category covers health and activity devices, while its Canadian buying guide distinguishes options by intended activity, from wellness and gym use to endurance training. These are examples of how product categories can map to different goals, not evidence that one brand or model is best.
A practical checklist before you buy
- Write down one or two jobs. Choose your main use, such as everyday activity, sleep, gym workouts or outdoor routes.
- Decide when you will wear it. Consider wrist, clip-on or ring form factors and whether you plan to wear it overnight.
- Verify compatibility. Check the exact model’s current phone, app, region and feature requirements.
- Choose your GPS setup. Decide whether you need built-in GPS or are comfortable relying on your nearby phone and its permissions.
- Check the readings you value. Look for metric-specific information and treat estimates as estimates.
- Confirm water and band limits. Check both the device rating and the included band’s suitability for your activities.
- Add ongoing costs. Confirm which features require a subscription and whether those features matter to you.
- Check the routine. Consider comfort, charging and whether the app presents information in a way you can understand.
