For most small custom gaming accessories—such as token holders, trays, terrain, organizers, and stands—start with an automatic-leveling FDM/FFF printer and PLA. Choose an MSLA resin printer instead when tiny sculpted details, fine lettering, or miniature-scale surfaces matter more than a simpler, cleaner workflow. The right choice depends on what you will print and where you can safely run and finish it, not just a printer’s advertised speed or resolution.
Should I buy an FDM or resin printer for gaming accessories?
FDM/FFF is usually the more practical first printer for functional gaming accessories; resin is the better fit for small, intricate details. FDM forms parts by melting solid filament, while MSLA resin printers cure liquid photopolymer in successive layers. Neither process is best for every object.
| Your priority | Better fit | Why | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trays, token holders, terrain, organizers, stands | FDM/FFF | It is beginner-friendly, uses inexpensive filament, and suits many sturdy functional parts. | Layer lines are more visible, and fine miniature detail is more limited. |
| Tiny sculpted parts, miniature figures, fine lettering or textures | MSLA/SLA resin | It can produce finer detail and smoother small surfaces. | Liquid resin requires careful handling, ventilation, washing, curing, and waste control. |
| Flexible grips, bumpers or bands | FDM with a direct-feed filament path | A direct-feed setup is recommended for flexible materials. | Flexible filament can be harder to tune than PLA. |
| Multi-color prints or soluble supports | A printer with multiple-material capability | Additional toolheads or nozzles can support these workflows. | More capability brings added complexity and cost. |
Maxon’s technical guide makes the useful distinction: “Neither is simply better. FDM is the friendlier starting point and the workhorse for sturdy parts, while resin wins on fine detail.” That is a better way to frame the choice than treating a single resolution or speed figure as a universal quality score.

FDM is a sensible default when the object needs to hold tokens, sit on a table, or organize a game box. It is also the easier process to learn for many beginners: solid filament is fed through the printer, melted, and laid down in paths. PLA is a forgiving first material for indoor accessories, and filament is generally a simpler consumable to store and work with than liquid resin.

The trade-off is visible layering and less definition on tiny features. A large terrain piece can look appropriate with layer lines, while a miniature face or small embossed symbol may not. Orientation and design matter as well: thin walls, small holes, and moving clearances need to be designed for the printer rather than assumed from a screen model.
What resin does well
MSLA resin is worth considering when the accessory is small enough that fine edges, facial detail, lettering, or texture define its appearance. It cures liquid photopolymer rather than extruding solid filament, which allows finer small-scale surfaces. This makes resin particularly relevant to miniature figures and detailed decorative pieces.
The print is only one part of the process. Resin work also involves handling uncured material, washing printed parts, UV curing, and controlling contaminated waste. If you do not have an appropriate workspace and the willingness to follow the printer and resin manufacturer’s safety instructions, fine detail alone may not justify choosing resin.

How much build volume do I need?
Choose build volume based on the largest single part you actually intend to print, plus whether you want to print several parts in one batch. A printer’s build volume is a hard limit for one object: a longer tray or larger terrain piece may need to be split into sections if it does not fit.
Print Disability’s 2024 accessibility guideline says a 20 cm³ build size is sufficient for most handheld models. Treat that as a guideline, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that a specific tray will fit: the available data does not define the dimensions of a particular accessory, and a volume figure alone does not describe the available length, width, and height. Check each axis against the part’s bounding dimensions and the printer’s usable build area.

Prusa’s buying guide says a reliable medium-sized printer covers about 90% of everyday projects. That is the manufacturer’s broad buying-guide claim, not a measured result for gaming accessories. For a new buyer, the practical implication is to avoid selecting a printer solely for an unusually large model you might print once; prioritize a dependable machine that suits the pieces you expect to make regularly.
Check the whole object and the batch
- Measure the longest, widest, and tallest part in its intended print orientation.
- Allow for a brim, supports, or other slicer-generated features if the design needs them.
- Decide whether printing a set of tokens or several organizer parts together is important. Batch size can make a smaller printer inconvenient even when each part fits alone.
- If an object exceeds the build area, consider whether it can be split and assembled without compromising its use.
As an example of why published specifications need context, TechRadar’s January 31, 2025 miniature-printer guide lists the Anycubic Photon Mono M5s Pro with a 200 mm × 223.78 mm × 126.38 mm build area and a 0.01 mm minimum layer resolution. These are published specifications in that guide, not independent test results established here. Confirm current manufacturer specifications and regional availability before treating them as purchase information.
What design details can make a print fail?
Wall thickness, holes, and clearances should be designed with the selected printer and material in mind. Published design rules are starting points—not guarantees—because printer calibration, orientation, material, and slicer settings all affect the finished part.
| Feature | Starting guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| FDM wall thickness | About twice the nozzle diameter, per Maxon. With a common 0.4 mm nozzle, that suggests about 0.8 mm. | Use this as an initial design rule, then test the part on the chosen printer. |
| Minimum walls | UltiMaker guidance uses approximately 0.5 mm. | Do not assume every printer, material, or orientation will reproduce a thin wall reliably. |
| Holes | UltiMaker recommends about 2 mm or larger. | Small holes may not print to the intended size; validate the fit before making a complete set. |
| Moving parts | UltiMaker recommends 0.6 mm clearance. | Use clearance as a design starting point, then check the motion on the specific printer and material. |
For a token holder, a hole that is technically present in the model can still be too tight after printing. For a stand or organizer, a thin wall may be vulnerable to handling. Test a small representative section or a single component before committing to a large batch, especially when fit or movement is essential.
Which materials make sense for gaming accessories?
Start with the material that matches the part’s job and your experience. Standard PLA is the forgiving choice for indoor accessories; PETG is a reasonable next step for parts where you want a tougher material; TPU is useful for flexible parts but is more demanding to tune.

- PLA: A practical first filament for indoor trays, stands, organizers, tokens, and terrain. It keeps the initial workflow comparatively simple.
- PETG: A reasonable option to explore when a part needs to be tougher than your PLA design. The available evidence does not establish a particular strength value or guarantee that PETG is right for every accessory.
- TPU: Useful for flexible grips, bumpers, or bands. A direct-feed path is recommended, and flexible filament is harder to tune than PLA.
- Photopolymer resin: Choose a formulation for the detail work you intend to do and check its safety instructions and mechanical properties against the part’s use. “Resin” is not a single material with one set of handling or durability characteristics.
Do not choose a material by name alone. A decorative piece, a part that holds weight, and a flexible grip have different requirements; the design, printer settings, and specific material formulation all matter.

Budget for a complete workflow, not just the machine. FDM needs filament and basic removal and maintenance tools; resin needs additional washing, curing, protective equipment, ventilation, and waste handling.
| Workflow | Plan to have | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| FDM/FFF | Filament, spare nozzles, a scraper or removal tools, flush cutters, pliers, and replacement build surfaces. | These supplies support printing, part removal, cleanup, and routine replacement of consumable components. |
| MSLA resin | Resin, a wash-and-cure station or separate wash and UV-curing equipment, gloves, eye protection, ventilation, cleaning supplies, and containers for uncured-resin waste. | Washing, curing, protecting yourself, ventilating the work area, and managing uncured resin are part of the process—not optional extras. |
The list does not establish a universal purchase price: costs vary by printer, region, and the supplies already available to you. Before choosing resin, make sure you can accommodate its full handling and cleanup workflow, not simply the printer footprint.
Which reliability features matter more than headline speed?
Look for features that reduce failed first layers and downtime. Automatic bed leveling, filament-out or clog detection, power-loss recovery, a well-supported slicer, replacement parts, and an active user community can be more useful in practice than a high advertised speed.
For FDM, the first layer is where a print begins, so a printer that is easier to level and repeat reliably can save time and material. Detection and recovery features can help with interruptions, but they do not make every print failure-proof. Check that replacement parts and the slicer workflow are accessible for the printer you are considering.

Prusa describes FDM as “The undisputed champion for 99% of users” in its buying guide. That is a manufacturer’s broad characterization, not an independent statistic about gaming-accessory owners. The decision table is more useful for an individual buyer: FDM suits many functional pieces, while resin has a stronger case when fine detail is central.
How should I account for safety, ventilation, and cleanup?
Make the workspace part of the buying decision. NIOSH’s 2023 publication DHHS (NIOSH) 2024-103, Approaches to Safe 3D Printing, addresses potential exposures to ultrafine particles, chemicals, and other safety hazards in non-industrial workplaces such as makerspaces, schools, libraries, and small businesses.
Resin requires especially careful handling and ventilation because the workflow includes liquid photopolymer and uncured-resin cleanup. Follow the safety data and instructions supplied by the printer and resin manufacturers; do not assume that curing the finished print eliminates the need to manage uncured material safely. The publication’s stated scope is potential hazards, not a claim that every printer or workspace produces the same exposure.
FDM and resin have different workflow burdens. FDM avoids resin washing and curing, but it still belongs in a workspace where you can follow the printer maker’s safety guidance. If you cannot provide appropriate handling and ventilation for resin, select a process that better fits your space instead of treating protective gear as an afterthought.

- Prioritize reliability and support. Review leveling, failure-detection and recovery features, slicer support, replacement-part availability, and user help before ranking advertised speed.
- Choose the process your workspace can support. For resin, confirm that you can follow the safety instructions for handling, ventilation, washing, curing, and waste.
If your plans span both categories, do not assume a single printer will be equally good at sturdy organizers and tiny sculpted miniatures. Decide which kind of accessory you will make most often, and let that primary use set the process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I print a board-game insert in one piece?
Only if its dimensions fit within the printer’s usable build area in the chosen orientation, including any supports or brim. Otherwise, the design may need to be divided into sections and assembled; check the fit before printing a complete insert.
Can I use the same 3D model on an FDM and resin printer?
A model may be usable on either process, but its dimensions and thin features may not print equally well on both. Check the model’s wall thickness and small details against the target printer, material, and slicer profile rather than assuming a file will transfer unchanged.
Do I need multiple-material printing to make gaming accessories?
No. It is relevant if multi-color prints or soluble supports are part of your intended workflow, but those capabilities add complexity and cost. A single-material printer is enough for many trays, stands, terrain pieces, and organizers.
How can I tell whether a resin is appropriate for a part I will handle often?
Check the specific resin’s safety information and mechanical properties, then match those details to the part’s intended use. The word “resin” alone does not establish that a formulation is suitable for repeated handling or a particular load.
