On your PS5, go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and record the value beside system software version exactly as shown. Check that value against the current documentation for the specific third-party project you are considering: Sony’s “Up to date” message means the console has the latest official system software, not that any jailbreak or other unofficial software is compatible.

Where can I find the PS5 system software version?

The version appears on the PS5’s Console Information screen. Sony’s support instructions and safety guide give the same menu path:

Settings > System > System Software > Console Information

“Firmware” is a common shorthand, but the label to look for on the console is system software version. Use that displayed value—not a general description such as “old firmware”—when checking a project’s requirements.

  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

How do I check and record the version?

  1. Turn on the PS5 and reach the home screen.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select System.
  4. Select System Software.
  5. Select Console Information.
  6. Write down the value shown beside system software version, preserving every digit and decimal point.

This is an information check; it is separate from installing an update or using Safe Mode. Recording the exact value gives you a precise starting point if you later need to check whether a project lists support for your console’s software version.

Does “Up to date” mean the PS5 is jailbreak-compatible?

No. Sony uses “Up to date” to indicate that the latest official system software is installed. It is not a compatibility result for third-party software.

Sony’s instructions explain how to view, update, or recover the console’s system software; they do not publish a jailbreak compatibility table or guarantee that a jailbreak tool works. Compatibility is specific to the named project and may depend on its stated software-version range and other requirements. Do not treat Sony’s status message, a video title, or a claim about “old firmware” as confirmation that a particular method will work.

What should I check in a project’s documentation?

After recording the version, consult the current documentation from the specific project—not a compatibility claim for a different tool or console. If that project describes multiple options, compare the requirements it actually publishes:

  • System software range: Does the documentation explicitly include the complete version string you recorded?
  • Console or hardware requirements: Does it specify a PS5 model or hardware revision?
  • Connection or accessory needs: Does the documented method require network access or a USB device?
  • Reboot behavior: Does the project explain whether its result persists after restarting?
  • Documentation date and version: Is the information current for the project version you intend to use?

If the documentation does not clearly answer a requirement, compatibility is unconfirmed. Do not fill in missing details from instructions for another project. Sony’s menu and support material tell you how to identify the installed official version, not how to assess or install unofficial software.

Is the official USB update process part of checking the version?

No. You can read the installed version from Console Information; Sony’s USB process is for official manual updating or Safe Mode recovery. Keep those maintenance instructions separate from any third-party software instructions.

For Sony’s documented update or recovery workflow, the USB drive must be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The specified layout is a top-level PS5 folder, an UPDATE subfolder, and a file named PS5UPDATE.PUP. Those details describe Sony’s official system-software maintenance process. A USB drive used for that purpose does not establish or guarantee jailbreak compatibility.

What if the version or compatibility is unclear?

  • You see “Up to date” but need the version number: Read the separate system software version value on Console Information and record it exactly.
  • A project says only “older firmware”: Treat that wording as insufficient unless its current documentation defines the supported versions.
  • A project lists several methods: Check each method’s own version, model, connection, accessory, and reboot requirements rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
  • The project’s documentation is unclear or undated: Compatibility has not been established by the information available; do not infer it from Sony’s update status or from instructions for another console.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a USB drive to check which PS5 system software is installed?

Sony’s stated way to view the installed version is the Console Information screen. The USB instructions apply to official manual updates or Safe Mode recovery, not to reading the version.

Does Sony’s PS5 update process install or validate jailbreak software?

Sony’s documented USB workflow is for official system-software updating or recovery. Sony’s support material does not certify third-party jailbreak tools or establish their compatibility.

What should I do if a jailbreak project does not list my exact version?

Treat support as unconfirmed rather than extrapolating from a nearby version or another project’s instructions. The available Sony guidance identifies the installed official version but does not resolve a project’s compatibility.
