Check your PS5 version at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. To update normally, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, choose Update System Software when Update Available appears, and leave the console connected to stable power. If the download repeatedly fails, retry it from Downloads/Uploads; if that does not work, use Sony’s official update file on a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive through Safe Mode. Do not turn off the PS5 during installation. Reinstalling system software is a last resort because it deletes all user data.
How do I check my PS5 system software version?
The installed version is shown in the PS5’s Console Information screen. The same screen also reports the console name, IP address and MAC address, which can help identify the console when following support instructions.

What does “Up to date” mean on a PS5?
Up to date means the console reports that it has the latest system software available through Sony’s update service when you check. It is a status result, not a promise that a future release will never appear; checking again later may show a newer version.

If a version number is shown without the up-to-date status, compare it only with the update prompt presented by the console. Avoid downloading files from unofficial mirrors or renaming files from other consoles or devices.
How do I update a PS5 online?
Online updating is the lowest-friction method when the console reaches the home screen and can download normally. The update menu tells you whether a newer release is available.
- Open Settings from the home screen.
- Go to System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Look for Update Available.
- Select Update System Software.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. Allow the download and installation to finish without switching off the console.
Before selecting the update, connect the PS5 to a stable power source. Sony advises against beginning immediately before or after a power outage. A temporary loss of power during installation can damage the console.

How can I let the PS5 update automatically in Rest Mode?

- Open Settings.

If the download fails repeatedly, stop repeating the same online attempt and move to the manual USB method below. Use only Sony’s official update file and the folder and filename structure Sony specifies.
How do I update a PS5 with a USB drive?
The USB method is a recovery path for repeated online-download failures or situations where the console can enter Safe Mode but cannot complete an online update. You need a PC or Mac, a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a USB cable for the controller. Sony’s guidance says the update file needs approximately 1.1 GB of free space; that figure is for the file, so leave additional room if the drive contains other data.
Prepare the USB drive on a PC or Mac
- Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting erases the drive’s existing contents, so copy off anything you need first.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Download Sony’s official PS5 system-software update file.
- Save the file inside the
UPDATEfolder with the exact filenamePS5UPDATE.PUP.
The folder names and filename are case-sensitive in Sony’s procedure. The resulting path must be USB drive/PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP, not an extra nested folder such as PS5/PS5/UPDATE. Do not leave the file with a browser-added name, extension or capitalization change.
Install the file from Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 completely off.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Choose Update System Software.
- Select Update from USB Storage Device.
- Choose OK and allow the update to complete.
Keep the USB drive connected until the console finishes the procedure. Do not power off the PS5 during installation. If Safe Mode does not detect the file, shut the console down and check the drive format, folder levels, capitalization and exact .PUP filename on the computer before trying again.

How do I enter PS5 Safe Mode correctly?
Safe Mode starts the console with a limited menu for recovery and maintenance. It is useful when the normal home-screen update cannot finish, but entering Safe Mode does not by itself update the console.
- With the PS5 off, press and hold the power button for about three seconds until it shuts down completely if necessary.
- Press and hold the power button again.

Follow this sequence so that a low-risk check comes before recovery actions that require extra equipment or can erase data.
