To check and update Minecraft, first identify whether you use Java Edition or Bedrock and where that copy was installed. Java Edition is managed through the Minecraft Launcher; Bedrock updates through the relevant app store or console controls. There is no single Minecraft-wide automatic-update switch: the setting depends on your launcher, store, or device.
The same title can therefore have different update instructions on a Windows PC, phone, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or Fire TV. Use the instructions for the edition and installation source you actually own. A store showing no update, or a console with an empty update list, is often the normal “already current” result rather than a failure.

How do I check which Minecraft version I have?
The right place to check depends on the edition and installation source. On Java Edition, inspect the selected installation in Minecraft Launcher near the Play button. On Bedrock, check the store or console interface where you installed or manage the game.
Do not treat the fact that Minecraft launches as proof that it is on the newest release. The Launcher can be set to a particular installation, including an older one. Likewise, an update screen with no available update generally means there is nothing for that platform to install at that time—not that every edition and device has the same version.

Start by identifying the edition and source
Before following any update guide, answer two questions: are you playing Java Edition or Bedrock, and which software manages that installation? Java Edition on a computer uses the Minecraft Launcher. Bedrock may be managed by Microsoft Store on Windows, an iOS or Android app store, a console’s game-management screen, or the Fire TV Store. Instructions for one source do not update a copy installed through another source.

This source check prevents a common mistake: opening Microsoft Store to look for a Java Edition update, or selecting a console menu while trying to update a phone installation. If you use more than one device, check each copy separately.

- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Look at the selected installation or release near the Play control.
- If the selected option is not the current release, open the arrow beside Play and choose Latest Release.
The Launcher should show the latest release automatically, but check the selected release before starting a game if you need to confirm what you are running. Launcher layouts can change, so the documented route may look slightly different in another build.
Seeing a version or installation name in the selector is more meaningful than simply seeing the game open. A launcher can point to an older installation deliberately, so a successful launch only proves that the selected installation can start. If you want the current standard release, make Latest Release the selection immediately beside Play before launching.
Bedrock Edition
Bedrock does not use the Java Launcher’s release selector. Find Minecraft in the store or game-management interface for the device where it is installed, then look for an update prompt or available update. The platform-specific sections below give the documented routes.
Bedrock’s update listing belongs to the platform that distributes the app. A Windows Store result does not establish the status of the Xbox, Switch, mobile, or Fire TV copy. For a household with several devices, repeat the check on each device rather than assuming that one successful update covers all installations.
How do I update Minecraft on each platform?
Use the update mechanism for the place you installed the game. The steps below reflect the official Minecraft and Microsoft instructions available on October 25, 2026; exact menu labels can change, so follow the equivalent update control if your interface differs.

Java Edition: select the current release
In Minecraft Launcher, the key setting is Latest Release. The Launcher is expected to show it automatically. If it is set to another installation, use the arrow beside Play and select Latest Release. Minecraft also maintains separate help instructions for manually updating Java Edition; use those if the launcher route does not resolve the issue.
Do not confuse the release selector with a device-wide update preference. It tells the Launcher which release to use for the next launch. If you intentionally use an older installation, leave that selection in place; if your goal is the current release, return to the selector and choose Latest Release.
Bedrock on Windows: check Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Choose Library.
- Select Get updates to check installed apps and games.
Confirm that this is the Windows installation you use before relying on Store instructions. Store directions apply to a copy managed there; they do not change the Java Edition selection in Minecraft Launcher.

Microsoft Store also has an automatic-update setting. Open your profile, choose Store Settings, and turn on App updates. Microsoft notes that some publishers manage updates through their own software, so this switch is useful only when the Minecraft copy is actually Store-managed. If Store updates have been paused, an update may not arrive until they are resumed.
Mobile: check the app’s store listing
Search for Minecraft in the App Store on iOS or Google Play on Android. Minecraft’s instructions say the store should prompt an owner to update if the installed copy is not current. If the listing shows Open, Minecraft says the latest version is installed.
The exact automatic-update screens vary by current iOS and Android release, and the Minecraft instructions do not document every device’s settings path. Use the app store’s own automatic-update control for your phone or tablet. If the store presents an Update control, select it; if it presents Open, there is no Minecraft update offered to that device at that moment.
Xbox: inspect the game’s Updates page
- Open My Apps & Games.
- Select Minecraft and open its more-options menu.
- Choose Manage game & add-ons, then Updates.
If that Updates screen lists nothing, Minecraft’s guide says the game is fully updated. This result concerns the Xbox game on that console; it does not establish the status of a different edition or device.
That empty list is an important verification signal. Do not keep searching for a download solely because another device displays a different number. First compare the same edition and then check the Xbox screen again after the console has network access.
PlayStation 4: check the selected game
When console automatic updates are configured, Minecraft should update automatically. To check manually, select the game, open Options, and choose Check for Update. These specific instructions are for PS4; do not assume the same menu path or behavior applies to every PlayStation generation.
If the PS4 offers no update after the manual check, the console has not found one for that installed game. The automatic-update wording is specific to the documented PS4 route, so avoid treating it as a promise about every PlayStation model.
Nintendo Switch: account for edition and menu changes
Minecraft’s guide includes a route involving the legacy Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition migration flow and the eShop. Since that context may not match the edition or menus on a current console, use the Switch’s own software-update controls when the guide’s labels differ. A mismatch in menu names is not by itself evidence that the game is broken.
Check the edition context before applying a legacy migration instruction. A current Switch installation may present different labels from the older guide. In that case, use the current software-update command supplied by the console rather than trying to reproduce a menu that is no longer present.
Fire TV: use the Store’s update control
Open the Fire TV Store, find Minecraft, and download the update. Then use the highlighted game’s More Info page and choose Update. This is a Fire TV-specific route, not a general Android or console instruction.

Because Fire TV has its own store interface, do not substitute Google Play or Xbox directions. If the Store does not show an update control, the listing is not currently offering one to that installation.
How do I turn on automatic updates?
Set automatic updates in the layer that manages your copy of Minecraft: the Launcher, Microsoft Store, mobile app store, or console. The available instructions do not establish one switch that enables automatic updates for Minecraft on every platform.

Turning on app updates on one Windows device does not configure a phone or console, and selecting Latest Release in Java does not turn on store updates for Bedrock.
Windows: enable Microsoft Store app updates
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Open Profile, then Store Settings.
- Turn on App updates.
This enables the Store’s app-update setting. Microsoft notes that some publishers manage updates through their own software, so verify that your Minecraft installation is Store-managed before expecting this setting to control it. Also check whether Store updates have been paused if an update does not arrive.
After enabling the setting, you can still use Library > Get updates when you want an immediate check. Automatic updates do not mean that every update installs at the instant it is released; network availability, storage, a restart, or a user action can still be required.
Java Edition: use the Launcher release selection
Minecraft says the Launcher should show the latest release automatically. If it does not, select Latest Release from the arrow beside Play. This is the documented Java release-selection behavior, not a universal device setting that forces every update to download and install without user action.

Mobile and consoles: use device-level settings
For mobile, use the app store’s automatic-update controls. Minecraft’s instructions direct owners to the App Store or Google Play to check for an update, but do not document the current settings screens for every iOS and Android version. For consoles, use that device’s own automatic software-update settings; the exact path and behavior vary by platform, and the PS4 instruction should not be generalized to other generations.
When a device setting is unavailable or labels have changed, use a manual check in the store or game-management screen. A manual check is also useful when you need to confirm whether an update is offered before starting a multiplayer session.
What can prevent an update from appearing?
Update delivery is controlled by the platform, so several ordinary conditions can delay an installation. The official instructions support checking the following rather than assuming that Minecraft itself is damaged:

- Available storage: the device may need enough free space to download and install the package.
- Restart or confirmation: a platform may require a restart or an explicit user action before the update completes.
- Paused Store updates: Microsoft says Store updates can be paused, which can explain why a Windows copy does not change.
- Wrong installation source: instructions for Microsoft Store, Java Launcher, mobile stores, and consoles do not substitute for one another.
- Changed labels: platform interfaces evolve, and the Nintendo Switch guide includes legacy-edition context that may not match a current menu.
These conditions do not create a universal update schedule. The official instructions do not specify how quickly an update must appear on every platform, so avoid promising an immediate rollout.
Why is a Minecraft update not showing?
A missing update listing does not automatically indicate an error. First confirm which edition and installation source you are checking, then use that platform’s update screen rather than a different platform’s instructions.
- Java Launcher shows another release: inspect the selected installation near Play and choose Latest Release if that is what you intend to use.
- Xbox Updates screen is empty: Minecraft says that means the Xbox game is fully updated.
- Microsoft Store shows no update: open Library and choose Get updates. If updates still do not appear, check whether Store updates are paused.
- Mobile listing shows Open: Minecraft says the latest version is installed.
- Console labels do not match the guide: use the current console’s software-update controls, especially when an instruction refers to a legacy edition or a specific console generation.
Update timing is not guaranteed to be immediate. A store or device may need network access, enough available storage, a restart, or user action; the official instructions do not specify a universal Minecraft update schedule.

A practical verification sequence
- Write down the device and edition you are checking.
- Open the source that manages that copy: Launcher, Microsoft Store, mobile store, console menu, or Fire TV Store.
- Run the source’s manual check, such as Get updates, Check for Update, or the store listing’s Update control.
- Read the result literally. Latest Release is the Java selection; an Update button means a package is offered; Open on mobile means Minecraft reports the latest version; an empty Xbox Updates screen means the game is fully updated.
- If nothing changes, check network access, storage, paused Store updates, and whether a restart or confirmation is waiting.
This sequence avoids repeatedly applying instructions from the wrong platform and gives you a clear result to report if you need further help.

There is no single version number in the official procedural instructions that applies to every edition and platform. Java and Bedrock use different update paths, and release availability can vary by edition or device. Check Latest Release in Minecraft Launcher or the update listing for the store or console that manages your game rather than relying on a number from an unrelated platform.
The menu labels and release information can change. If a current interface differs from the routes here, use the platform’s own update controls and Minecraft’s current help information for that edition.
A friend reporting a different number is not enough to prove that your copy is obsolete. Compare Java with Java or Bedrock with Bedrock, and compare copies on the same type of platform when possible. A release offered to one edition or device may not be the release shown by another.
Do you need to buy anything to update Minecraft?
No additional accessory, repair utility, guidebook, replacement part, or separate update tool is required by these procedures. The documented workflow uses the Launcher, the app store, or the console controls for the game already installed. Buying Minecraft again is not an update step.
If a store does not recognize the installation, verify that you are using the account and platform associated with that copy before considering any purchase. The update instructions themselves do not call for a paid service or PC-optimization program.

Can I update Minecraft without losing my worlds?
The update instructions covered here do not describe world deletion or make a guarantee about world preservation. If a world is important, make a separate backup using the options available for your edition and device before changing installations or performing troubleshooting beyond a normal update.

Why do my friends have a different Minecraft version number?
They may be using a different edition or platform, so comparing numbers alone may not establish that either copy needs an update. Compare Java with Java or Bedrock with Bedrock, and check availability through the store or launcher that manages each copy.
Do I need to buy Minecraft again to get an update?
