You can search an unfamiliar number for public listings and reports, but no reverse lookup or caller ID display proves who is contacting you. If a caller or text claims to be from a company, bank, or government agency, verify the claim through that organization’s official website, app, or a number on a statement—not through details supplied in the contact.

What a phone-number search can—and cannot—tell you

Search the full number, including its country or area code, in a search engine or reverse-number directory. You may find a public business listing or reports from other people. Compare more than one independent result, and treat user-submitted reports as unverified claims: they can be mistaken, outdated, or about a previous user of the number. A lack of results does not mean a caller is safe.

A reverse search may not identify a private individual, and a result cannot establish that the person contacting you currently controls the number. The displayed number or name is not authentication: scammers can make another number or name appear on caller ID. Ofcom recommends searching a number while also advising people to verify organizational claims independently in its protection guidance; the FTC explains that callers can make any name or number appear on caller ID in its phone-scam advice.

How to verify a caller claiming to represent an organization

  1. Stop before acting. Urgent threats, pressure to keep the contact secret, demands for payment, or requests for passwords and security codes are reasons to pause. A caller knowing personal details does not establish that the call is genuine.
  2. End the call or set the message aside. Do not use a callback number provided by the caller or a link in an unexpected message.
  3. Find the organization’s contact route yourself. Open its official website or app directly, or check a statement or card you already have. Use a published number there to ask whether the contact or request is real. Ofcom and the FTC both advise independent verification rather than trusting incoming contact details (Ofcom; FTC).

Apple Support gives similar advice for unexpected requests for personal information or money: presume they may be a scam and contact the company directly if needed (Apple Support).

What to do with an unknown or suspicious text

Do not reply just to ask who sent it, and do not click its links or provide information. Ofcom warns that replying to an unknown sender—even to opt out—can confirm that your number is active (Ofcom’s action guidance). If a message claims there is a delivery, bill, or account problem, open the relevant service’s app or website yourself and check there.

How the available checks compare

Option Useful for What it cannot establish
Search engine or reverse-number directory Finding public business listings or reports from other people Whether the current caller controls the number or is who they claim to be; coverage may be incomplete or stale
Organization’s official website, app, or account statement Finding a callback route independent of an incoming call or text Whether a particular incoming contact was genuine; navigate to the source yourself
Phone screening feature, third-party app, or carrier filter Flagging, screening, or blocking suspected spam Authenticating a caller; warnings and capabilities vary by device, carrier, and region
Replying to an unknown text Not a reliable identity check It may confirm that your number is active

Use screening and blocking as nuisance controls

Built-in phone features, third-party apps, and carrier filters can help flag, screen, or block suspected spam, but a warning—or no warning—is not proof of identity. Ofcom lists Apple Screen Unknown Callers, Samsung Smart Call, Hiya, and Truecaller as examples; availability and capabilities can change. Check your phone settings or ask your carrier what is available, and download apps only through trusted app stores.

Google described a narrower fake-call detection scenario in a June 2, 2026 post: its feature can flag suspected spoofed calls when both the contact and recipient use Phone by Google (Google’s announcement). This is a specific feature scenario, not a general guarantee that phones can identify or authenticate every caller.

Report suspected scams using the route for your country

Reporting options depend on where you live. In the UK, Ofcom advises forwarding suspicious mobile texts and calls to 7726 and lists Report Fraud and Police Scotland for scam calls. In the US, report scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Elsewhere, follow your local official reporting guidance; these routes are not universal.
