Yes, a VPN can charge more when the first term ends. Promotional pricing commonly applies only to the introductory term; the next charge can use a higher, changeable renewal price. To verify your own plan, compare the amount actually paid at checkout with the next charge shown in your VPN account and renewal notice. Match the currency, tax treatment, subscription term, device allowance and plan tier before calculating the difference. If the renewal is unacceptable, disable auto-renewal through the same channel used to buy the subscription—your VPN account, Apple subscriptions or Google Play. Uninstalling the app does not cancel a store subscription.
What is the difference between an introductory VPN price and a renewal price?
The introductory price is the amount advertised and charged for your first subscription term. The renewal price is the amount scheduled for the following term when automatic renewal runs. They may differ because the first term includes a promotion, while later terms use the provider’s then-current standard or personalized rate.
The Federal Trade Commission warns that “sometimes, an automatic renewal might charge more than you paid the last time,” particularly when the earlier amount was promotional. Kaspersky’s renewal wording similarly says the renewal price may differ from the introductory price and can change. Treat the price in your account-specific renewal notice as the figure that matters for your next charge, not an old advertisement or a price seen by a new customer.
Where can I find the two prices I need to compare?
Use records tied to your subscription rather than a public pricing page. Collect the original purchase evidence and the latest renewal evidence before doing any arithmetic.

Find the introductory price
- Open the original offer page if you still have it, and note the displayed term and whether the figure was a total or a monthly equivalent.
- Open the checkout confirmation or invoice and record the amount actually charged, currency, taxes, plan tier and number of devices.
- Find the email receipt. Kaspersky says the introductory price appears on the offer page, in the shopping cart and in the email receipt; the receipt is especially useful because it reflects the transaction that occurred.
Do not substitute a rounded headline such as “$3 per month” for the billed total. A two-year offer shown as a monthly equivalent could have been charged as one upfront total, and tax may have been added at checkout.
Find the renewal price
- Sign in to the VPN provider’s website and open Subscription, Billing, Manage plan or Renewal. Labels vary by provider.
- Record the next charge, renewal date, billing interval, term, currency, tax treatment, plan tier and device allowance.
- Read the latest renewal or price-change email. NordVPN says its subscription renews automatically at the applicable renewal price and that customers receive email notice of changes. ExpressVPN says checkout discloses the initial price, renewal price and frequency, and that upcoming charges appear in the account under the subscription ID.
If the account and email show different amounts, preserve both records and contact support before the charge date. A later, subscription-specific notice normally reflects the current scheduled amount, while an older receipt proves what the first term cost.
How do I compare the prices fairly?
Put both figures on the same basis before deciding that renewal is more expensive. The most common error is comparing a multi-year introductory total with a one-year renewal total as though they covered the same period.
Normalize these five variables
- Term: Compare one year with one year, two years with two years, or convert both to a monthly equivalent.
- Currency: Use the currency actually charged to your account. Do not compare a local-currency receipt with a dollar price from a public page.
- Tax: Include tax in both totals, or exclude it from both. State which method you used.
- Plan tier and devices: A basic plan and a family plan are not equivalent, even if their names look similar. Check the number of permitted simultaneous devices.
- Billing method: A direct website subscription can have different taxes, terms or prices from an Apple or Google Play subscription.
Use an effective monthly cost when terms differ
Divide each total by the number of months it covers. Label the result as an effective monthly cost; it does not mean the provider bills monthly. For example, an illustrative $96 two-year introductory total equals $4 per month, while an illustrative $60 one-year renewal equals $5 per month. The renewal total is lower in dollars because it covers fewer months, but its monthly equivalent is higher.

How do I calculate the increase?
Once the terms are comparable, use two calculations:
Price difference = renewal total − introductory total
Percentage increase = (price difference ÷ introductory total) × 100

A positive result means the renewal total is higher on the chosen basis. A negative result means the renewal total is lower, although a shorter renewal term can still make its monthly equivalent higher.
Worked example with normalized totals
Suppose your receipt shows a $48 first-year total including tax, and the renewal notice shows $72 for the next year. The difference is $24. The percentage increase is ($24 ÷ $48) × 100 = 50%.
If your first charge covered two years, first convert it. A $96 two-year introduction is $48 per year; a $72 one-year renewal is $72 per year. The annualized increase is therefore $24, or 50%, even though the original invoice and renewal invoice have different terms.
Keep the original totals, dates and assumptions in a note or spreadsheet. That makes the result auditable if support disputes the amount.

Policies differ, so read the terms attached to your subscription. Several provider statements illustrate why a first-term price is not a reliable forecast of the next term.
- NordVPN: Its support statement says the renewal price is subject to change and customers will be notified by email before renewal.
- ExpressVPN: Its support statement says the initial price, renewal price and renewal frequency are disclosed immediately above the subscribe button at checkout; the account shows upcoming charges under the subscription ID.
- Kaspersky: Its renewal center states that the renewal price may differ from the introductory price and is subject to change.
- McAfee: Its legal terms state that the amount charged upon purchase is the price of the first term, distinguishing that first-term amount from subsequent billing.
These statements are examples of policy language, not a universal rule about every VPN. Your checkout disclosure, subscription record and latest notice govern your particular transaction.
A dated example of why prices must be time-stamped
TunnelBear’s policy revised December 5, 2025 lists full prices of $10.99 monthly and $69.99 annually and says annual subscribers receive a reminder 30 days before billing. Those figures are a dated example, not a permanent market price or a prediction of what any account will be charged. Record the date, country and currency whenever you save a price.

How can I check whether auto-renewal is still enabled?
Check the subscription status in the billing channel that holds the payment. A VPN account can show an active service while a store account controls the renewal switch.

- Sign in to the provider’s account.
- Open Subscription, Billing or Manage plan.
- Find Auto-renewal, Renew automatically or a similarly named control.
- Confirm the displayed renewal date and price before changing the setting.
Subscriptions bought through Apple
- On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your Apple Account name.
- Tap Subscriptions, select the VPN and review the renewal date and plan.
- Use Cancel Subscription and confirm. The exact menu wording can vary slightly by iOS version.
Subscriptions bought through Google Play
- Open Google Play and tap your profile picture.
- Choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select the VPN, review the next charge and tap Cancel subscription.
Mozilla cautions that deleting the app does not cancel a store subscription. Removing an icon from a phone changes the installation, not the billing agreement.
What should I do if the renewal price is too high?
Act before the stated renewal date, and keep proof of the action you take.
- Check the deadline: Note the date and time zone in the renewal notice. Some providers require cancellation before a cutoff measured in hours or days.
- Use the correct channel: Cancel on the provider’s account for a direct purchase, or in Apple Subscriptions or Google Play for a store purchase.
- Save confirmation: Keep the cancellation page, email, ticket number and a screenshot showing that auto-renewal is off.
- Verify the service end date: Cancellation often stops the next charge while leaving access until the paid term ends; the account should state the exact end date.
- Monitor the payment account: Check the next card or bank statement. The FTC advises consumers to review renewal notices and watch statements for unwanted charges.
- Contact support promptly if charged: Provide the receipt, renewal notice, cancellation confirmation and transaction date. Ask which refund policy applies to your billing channel and jurisdiction.
Do not assume that switching plans, removing a payment card or deleting the VPN profile disables renewal. Those actions may leave the subscription active or create a failed-payment sequence without formally canceling it.
What should I record when comparing VPN plans?
A compact record prevents misleading comparisons and makes support conversations faster. Capture each item for both the first term and the upcoming term.

If a value is not displayed, write “not stated” and note where you looked. Do not fill gaps with a price from a search result or another customer’s account.

A mismatch does not always mean the provider made an error. Check these causes in order.

Different tax or currency treatment
The offer may exclude tax while the invoice includes it, or an international card may apply a conversion rate. Compare the provider’s charged currency and tax line first; treat a bank conversion fee as a separate card charge.
A different term or plan
Promotions can change the plan tier, device limit or billing interval. Open the subscription ID and confirm that the renewal belongs to the same product you bought.

A price-change notice after purchase
Providers may revise renewal prices and send notice before billing. Save the newest notice and compare its date with the older receipt. An old introductory banner cannot override a later account-specific disclosure unless applicable consumer law or the provider’s terms says otherwise.
Store billing versus direct billing
Apple or Google Play may collect the payment even when the VPN’s app and account look identical. Store taxes, currency and cancellation controls can differ from the provider’s website. Check the store subscription page before contacting the VPN.
Multiple subscriptions
An unused account, a second email address or a family member’s store account can create two active renewals. Search receipts by merchant name and inspect every Apple or Google Play account connected to the device.

You can ask support whether a loyalty offer, plan change or cancellation option is available, but do not treat an unadvertised offer as guaranteed. First secure the current subscription by turning off auto-renewal if you do not want the scheduled debit. Then compare any replacement offer on the same term, device count, tax basis and post-promotion renewal terms.
A lower “monthly” figure can still produce a higher upfront charge if the provider bills a full year or multi-year term. Ask for the total due today, the total due at the next renewal and the exact date each amount applies. Request the answer in writing and retain it with your receipt.

- Read the text immediately above the subscribe button for the initial amount, renewal amount and frequency.
- Screenshot the checkout summary after confirming the plan, term, taxes and device allowance.
- Store the receipt and the subscription ID in a searchable folder.
- Add a calendar reminder several weeks before renewal, even when the provider promises an email.
- Prefer a plan whose renewal total is clearly stated over one that shows only a low introductory monthly equivalent.
- After purchase, open the account billing page and verify that its renewal date and amount match your records.
These habits do not prevent a provider from changing a price under its terms, but they give you a dated record and time to cancel before an unwanted charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a VPN renew at a higher price without asking me again?
If you accepted automatic renewal in the original agreement, a provider may process the next term under the disclosed renewal terms, subject to applicable law and its notice obligations. The provider should identify the upcoming amount in the account or a renewal notice; review that notice rather than relying on the original promotion.
What if I cannot find my original VPN receipt?
Search every email account used at checkout for the merchant name, subscription ID, invoice or payment processor. Your card statement can establish the first-term amount, while the provider’s billing page supplies the current renewal record; save both if the original message is unavailable.
Does turning off auto-renewal end my VPN access immediately?
Usually, cancellation prevents the next debit while access continues through the already paid term, but the exact end date is provider- and channel-specific. Confirm the date shown after cancellation and keep the confirmation message.
Can a bank block a VPN renewal instead of canceling it?
A bank or card issuer may be able to dispute or block a transaction, but that does not necessarily terminate the underlying subscription. Cancel with the billing channel first, then contact the issuer if a charge occurs after documented cancellation.
Are app-store VPN prices always the same as website prices?
No. Apple and Google Play can apply different taxes, currencies, billing rules and promotional terms from a direct website purchase. Compare the store’s subscription record with the VPN account and cancel in the store where the subscription was bought.
