Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDisconnect your VPN and record the public IPv4 and, if available, IPv6 addresses shown by an IP-checking page. Reconnect the VPN and run the same check again: the visible address should be the VPN’s exit address, not the public address from your disconnected baseline. Then test WebRTC, IPv6, and DNS separately, because an ordinary IP check does not cover all of those paths.
Compare your public IP with and without the VPN
- Record a baseline: Disconnect the VPN, open a public IP checker, and note the public IPv4 address and any IPv6 address it reports. Close or refresh the page after recording the results.
- Connect the VPN: Reopen or refresh the checker. The address it sees should now be the VPN’s exit address. A VPN-provider address is expected; the key question is whether your own disconnected baseline still appears.
- Repeat an unexpected result: If the baseline address is still shown, run the check once more. Note whether it appears in the ordinary page result or in a separate IPv4 or IPv6 result. A changed VPN exit or stale page can otherwise confuse the comparison. ExpressVPN’s WebRTC leak test illustrates comparing public addresses with the VPN disconnected and connected; its interpretation is provider guidance, not independent certification.
A VPN’s connected indicator is not a measurement of what a website can see. The comparison is between the public address seen without the VPN and the address observed while it is connected.
Test WebRTC separately
While connected to the VPN, use a WebRTC leak test and compare any public addresses it reports with your baseline and expected VPN exit. WebRTC uses ICE address discovery for real-time communications. Depending on browser and network routing, it can reveal addresses beyond the one seen in an ordinary web request.
The IETF’s RFC 8826 explains that ICE candidates can let a peer learn addresses, and that hiding an address from a calling peer is distinct from hiding it from the calling site. The IETF’s RFC 8828 notes that a multihomed client can expose additional public IP addresses. Thus, a WebRTC result showing your disconnected public address deserves investigation, but not every WebRTC address is automatically an ISP leak: it may be the VPN exit or another address relevant to the call’s routing.

WebRTC and ordinary browsing can have different privacy and media-routing trade-offs. Some users allow direct media paths for call quality. Check your VPN and browser’s WebRTC guidance before changing settings; disabling WebRTC is not the only possible response.
Check IPv4 and IPv6 independently
A changed IPv4 address does not establish that IPv6 traffic also goes through the VPN. If the checker reports both address families, compare each connected result with its disconnected baseline. An IPv6 address that matches your ordinary connection is a warning; an IPv6 address belonging to the VPN’s exit may be expected.

IETF RFC 7359 describes leakage when a dual-stack client uses a VPN that does not handle IPv6, and recommends sending IPv6 traffic through the VPN when supported. If your own IPv6 address appears, review the VPN’s IPv6 support and settings. Do not treat disabling IPv6 as a universal permanent fix: support and implementation vary.
Run a DNS leak check
A public IP checker shows the address used for a web request; it does not identify which DNS resolver handled a domain lookup. Run a DNS leak check with the VPN connected and compare the resolver results with the behavior your VPN provider documents. Resolver names and test displays vary, so no single resolver identity is universal proof of a leak.

Interpret the result and choose a next step
- Your baseline public address appears in an ordinary IP result: Repeat the check, then review split-tunnel settings and whether the VPN is connected for the traffic being tested.
- Your baseline address appears only in a WebRTC result: Check the browser’s and VPN’s WebRTC guidance and consider whether direct media routing is intentional for your calls.
- Your baseline IPv6 address appears: Confirm whether the VPN supports routing IPv6 through its tunnel and review its IPv6 configuration.
- DNS results seem unexpected: Compare them with the provider’s documented resolver behavior rather than assuming that a particular resolver name is required.
Distinguish public ISP addresses from private local-network addresses. For example, ExpressVPN’s test page distinguishes public and local addresses; a private LAN address is not equivalent to your public ISP address.
A clean result applies only to the browser, network, connection state, and test paths checked at that time. It does not establish that every app or device is protected, or that a later connection or VPN disconnect will behave the same way.
