To check whether your software is affected by a newly disclosed flaw, compare the vendor’s advisory with the exact product, edition, version, build, deployment mode, and configuration you actually run. A CVE or vulnerability score identifies and describes a flaw; it does not, on its own, prove that a particular installation is vulnerable. Confirm the affected conditions, check whether exploitation is reported, apply the vendor’s fix or mitigation, and verify the result on the running system.

What should I check first when a new software flaw is disclosed?

Start with the software vendor’s security advisory, not a headline, a scanner alert, or a CVE score in isolation. The advisory is the key source for the affected product and versions, any conditions that must be met, and the vendor’s fix or mitigation. NIST’s guidance for security advisories says they should give readers enough information to decide whether a vulnerability is relevant and how to remediate it.

Before changing anything, write down the disclosure identity and the system you need to evaluate. That gives you a concrete comparison rather than a vague question such as “Do we use this product?”

  • Disclosure: the vendor advisory and CVE identifier, if one has been assigned.
  • Installed software: product name, edition, exact version and build.
  • Deployment: host or service, deployment mode, and relevant operating system or architecture.
  • Conditions: the affected features or configuration requirements named by the advisory.
  • Exposure: whether the affected asset is reachable from the internet or otherwise exposed to likely attack paths.

A newly disclosed flaw may have incomplete or changing details. If the advisory does not yet identify a fixed release, or lists conditions you cannot confirm, record that uncertainty and follow the vendor’s updates rather than treating an unknown as proof of safety.

How do I find the exact software version and build?

Use the version information for the instance that is actually running, and compare it with the vendor’s affected-version range. A package record, installer filename, or product name alone may not identify the edition, build, or deployment variant that determines whether the advisory applies.

For software installed on a device or server

Check the product’s own version or system-information view, the operating system’s installed-software inventory, or your organization’s asset-management record. Confirm the result against the host where the service runs. If a product has multiple instances, nodes, or environments, record each one separately: a patched test server does not establish the version on a production host.

For services managed by a vendor

Record the service or product name, the deployment or service tier if the vendor distinguishes them, and any tenant-level configuration that the advisory says matters. A customer may not control the underlying build of a managed service, so use the provider’s advisory or status communication to establish whether the service is affected and when remediation is complete. Do not assume that a change to a local client updates a hosted service, or the reverse.

For software you build or distribute

Check the software bill of materials (SBOM), if available, for the affected component and version. CISA describes an SBOM as a formal record of the software components used in a product; it can help establish whether a package is present. Also search build artifacts and source repositories when the SBOM is missing, stale, or does not cover the build under review. A component found in a development branch is not automatically evidence that the same component is present in the deployed release.

How do I tell whether the advisory’s affected conditions match my installation?

Compare the advisory condition by condition. A product-name or package-name match is only a lead: the flaw may affect a limited version range, a particular edition or architecture, or only installations with a named feature enabled.

  1. Match the product identity. Confirm the vendor, product, edition, and component named in the advisory. Check for renamed products, embedded components, or separate server and client editions if the advisory distinguishes them.
  2. Match the version and build. Place the installed version in the advisory’s affected, fixed, or otherwise described range. If the advisory uses a build number or release channel, compare that exact field rather than relying on a broad version label.
  3. Check platform conditions. Compare the operating system, architecture, deployment mode, and other platform details the advisory names.
  4. Check configuration and feature conditions. Establish whether any vulnerable feature is enabled or whether a specific configuration is required. If the advisory says the issue applies only under a condition, do not silently assume that condition is either present or absent.
  5. Record the outcome and evidence. Mark the installation as affected, not affected, or unresolved, and note which advisory condition supports the decision. Escalate an unresolved condition for confirmation instead of converting missing information into a definitive result.

These checks separate “the component exists” from “the flaw affects this deployment.” That distinction matters especially for dependencies: a package can appear in an SBOM while the vulnerable code path is not used or the assembled product is otherwise not affected.

What do CVE, NVD, SBOM, and VEX tell me?

These records answer different questions. Treat them as complementary evidence, with the vendor advisory guiding product-specific applicability and remediation.

Record or source What it helps establish What it does not establish by itself
Vendor security advisory The vendor’s affected products and versions, conditions, fixed releases, mitigations, and verification guidance. Whether every one of your installations meets those conditions; you still need an accurate inventory.
CVE record A standardized identifier for referring to a disclosed vulnerability. That a particular product, build, or deployment is affected.
NVD entry Additional vulnerability information such as references, applicability data, CVSS, and CWE when available. A final risk decision for your organization. NVD notes that its score may differ from a vendor’s because assessors use the information available to them.
SBOM Evidence about which software components are included in a product or build. Whether a vulnerability in a listed component affects the assembled product.
VEX or equivalent vendor evidence A statement about whether a product is affected, not affected, fixed, or under investigation for a vulnerability. A substitute for checking that the statement applies to the product release and deployment you operate.

CISA describes VEX as a machine-readable security advisory that clarifies and prioritizes vulnerability risk. When reviewing a VEX statement, connect it to the exact product or release in scope; do not treat a statement about one build as a finding about every version.

How can I prioritize a newly disclosed vulnerability?

Consider exploitation evidence and the circumstances of the affected asset alongside severity. CVSS is useful context, but it is not a complete decision about how urgently your organization should act.

Check CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog

Look for the CVE in CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog and read the vendor’s own statement about exploitation. KEV inclusion indicates reliable evidence of active exploitation and a clear remediation path under CISA’s criteria. If a CVE is absent, that absence does not prove that it is harmless or that no exploitation is occurring; use it as one part of the assessment.

Assess the affected asset, not just the score

CISA’s prioritization factors include asset exposure, KEV status, exploit automation, and technical impact. Apply those factors to the installation you identified: an internet-exposed affected system may call for a different response from an isolated one, and a vendor mitigation may be necessary while a fix is being prepared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the conclusion scoped. “This release meets the advisory’s affected conditions and is exposed” is more useful for a response decision than “the CVE is critical” without evidence about your system. Record the source and date of the exploitation information because vendor statements and catalog entries can change as new information appears.

How do I fix the flaw and verify the patch worked?

Use the vendor’s fixed version or documented mitigation, then verify both the software state and the scanner coverage. A successful update message alone does not demonstrate that every affected host is running the fixed build.

  1. Select the vendor’s remediation. Confirm the fixed release or mitigation in the advisory. Check any prerequisites or configuration changes the vendor specifies before applying it.
  2. Apply it to each affected deployment. Track hosts, services, or product instances individually. If the advisory requires a mitigation rather than an update, record the exact change and where it was applied.
  3. Confirm the running state. Recheck the installed version and build on the affected system, and confirm that any required configuration change is active. For a managed service, obtain provider confirmation that the relevant service has been remediated.
  4. Rescan with relevant coverage. Use a scanner that explicitly detects the particular CVE, and confirm that its product and version coverage applies to your deployment. NCSC guidance recommends checking scanner coverage for the specific vulnerability and rescanning affected hosts.
  5. Retain the evidence. Keep the advisory, affected-asset list, before-and-after versions or configuration, mitigation record, and scan result together. This makes it possible to explain why an item was closed or remains open.

If a scan still reports the flaw after an update, first compare the reported host and detected version with the system you patched. Then check whether all instances were updated, whether the scanner recognizes the fixed build, and whether the finding concerns a separate dependency or another product component. A finding should be closed only when the evidence matches the remediation and the affected deployment.

What should I do when a dependency appears in an SBOM?

Use the SBOM to find where the component is present, then use VEX or vendor evidence to determine whether the flaw affects the product. Presence is a useful starting point, not a verdict that the vulnerable code is exploitable in the assembled application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Identify the product release and build represented by the SBOM; check whether it describes the deployed artifact.
  • Search for the affected package and version, including relevant build artifacts and repositories if the SBOM is incomplete.
  • Check whether the component version falls within the vendor’s affected range and whether any stated conditions apply.
  • Look for a VEX status or equivalent vendor assessment tied to the same product and release.
  • If the status is under investigation or unavailable, track it as unresolved and seek clarification rather than silently marking it unaffected.

For software that you develop or distribute, maintaining current component records makes future disclosures easier to triage: you can identify likely locations of a package before manually inspecting each product. It does not remove the need to check applicability and remediation for the specific flaw.

How can I keep from missing the next disclosure?

Maintain an inventory and monitor the sources relevant to the products you operate. National catalogs and general security feeds can help, but they may not cover niche software; NCSC specifically warns that national catalogues can omit niche products.

  • Keep a current record of product, edition, version/build, deployment mode, owner, and exposure.
  • Follow vendor security advisories for those products, along with CISA and other national cyber-agency alerts.
  • Monitor relevant security feeds for CVE identifiers, then verify alerts against the vendor advisory before deciding that a deployment is affected.
  • Keep SBOM and VEX information tied to identifiable software releases when you build or distribute software.
  • Revisit open or unresolved assessments when an advisory, exploitation statement, fixed release, or VEX status changes.

For scanner or monitoring tools, evaluate whether their data is current and authoritative, whether they cover your exact products and builds, whether they show transitive dependencies, and whether they detect the specific CVE. Also assess whether they provide exploitation and exposure context, actionable remediation guidance, and repeatable evidence suitable for an audit. A tool’s general vulnerability detection claim is not proof that it detects a newly disclosed flaw in your particular deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the vendor has not published a fixed version yet?

Use only the mitigation or workaround the vendor documents, and track the affected system as awaiting a permanent fix. If the advisory gives no safe mitigation, contact the vendor or your support channel and base interim controls on the system’s exposure and the available exploitation information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I treat a vulnerability as false positive because the vulnerable feature is disabled?

Only if the vendor’s advisory or an applicable VEX statement supports that conclusion for your specific release and configuration. Record the evidence and keep it under review in case the configuration or vendor assessment changes.

Why might the vendor’s CVSS score differ from NVD’s?

The assessors can evaluate the issue using different information available at the time, so their scores may not match. Read the underlying severity rationale and applicability details rather than choosing one score as a universal risk decision.

Does a clean vulnerability scan prove that my system is safe?

No. It establishes only what the scanner checked with its available signatures and coverage. Confirm that the scanner explicitly detects the CVE and supports the product, version, and deployment you are assessing.
